Nicole Richie really turned her life around when she got pregnant with her first child, Harlow, in 2007. Prior to that she was known for being Paris Hilton’s best friend, for partying and for getting a DUI. Richie pled guilty and received a four day jail sentence, of which she served less than an hour and a half before being released. Richie got jail time because it was actually her second DUI – she had another one four years prior. Richie has since said that being a mom made her realize that she could have killed someone and that she decided to be a better person for her daughter (she had just one child when she said that, she and Joel Madden now have two).
So that’s why I’m side eyeing Richie’s new essay for Lena Dunham’s Lenny newsletter. Richie makes the dubious argument that she’s not ashamed of her past, that it made her who she is and that “I’m not going to apologize for me so you can get your triumphant ending.” Wow. I guess people say a lot of dumb stuff to her in public about how she used to be so wild, but still.
With my family and close friends, I am owning my past, relishing in the absurdity, slightly flinching at my own navet, and giving myself props for the unabashed bravery that streaked through my youth. But not trying to hide from it, not trying to change it, just allowing it to help propel me forward.
When I am out in the world naked and vulnerable, I acknowledge that I was young, had a lot of freedom, and made some ?bad decisions? ? but how bad are they if it?s part of a journey to understanding who I am and what I stand for? I feel the need to support women loving themselves. It?s by loving ourselves that we give permission to others to love us. Life is a roller coaster, and we all have had times where we need to get back on the up, but we can?t do it alone. We need each other?s love and support.
I finally realized that taking on someone else?s vision of you can be very dangerous. People attempt to categorize and label so they can feel upright and comfortable. If you are hard to understand, they don?t feel safe, so they put you in a box that they recognize. I cannot tell you how easy it is to believe someone else?s picture of you. Is it because it?s easier to be agreeable? Partly. Is it because of laziness? Partly.
It is no secret that I have, at times, taken advantage of my time on this planet. And as much as I have to look at those moments and learn from them, as we all do, it?s important for me to have gratitude for that time, too. Not shame. Being ashamed of your life is not OK. I realized I am actually extremely thankful I was so beastly in front of the world for a few reasons. It?s so bad in people?s minds that there?s nothing that can embarrass me now. I got a little surprise gift of freedom! I also truly believe if I didn?t have so many eyes on me, it would?ve been easier for me to slip back into my reckless behavior. I had people rooting me on and watching me at a time when I needed that.
Mostly, the utter freedom I experience from having all of my past out in the open allows me to truly accept and embrace my former self, allowing her and every subsequent version of me to know that we are going to be OK, because we are not static. And I don?t have to worry someone is going to put an embarrassing picture up on Facebook ? the worst is already in strangers? heads. How cool is that?!
I could fall into the role-playing that some people seem to want and say, ?YES! I am so sorry. I was bad. I am good now! I promise.? But I don?t believe in that story of redemption, a good-prevailing-over-evil story. It?s one I?m just not in. I am not going to apologize for being me so you can get your triumphant ending. I don?t believe the world operates in absolutes, in black and white and short and tall ? I like living in the gray, in the medium.
That?s because all of these things I learned by being me in my teens and twenties are just more tools that allow me to live in a more peaceful, safe way. The simple yet difficult act of forgiving yourself is so powerful, because it?s all within you. We have to embrace ourselves and hold every part of our journey in some type of light. Instead of reliving my past as a point of shame, I?ve embedded the lessons into my skill set.

What happened to her realization that little kids and innocent people get killed by drunk drivers every day? She was so high she was driving the wrong way on the freeway! This isn’t a harmless thing she did and she has two DUIs, not just one. I get that she wants to own her past and that she’s protective of her identity on her own terms, but there’s something to be said for being humble and accepting responsibility. I did some really dumb sh-t when I was in my teens and 20s and I’m ashamed of that. You can be both secure in who you are and how you define yourself, realize that it helped shape you and be ashamed of your past, when you could have killed yourself or others. I thought that’s how Nicole framed it until I read this essay. It’s like she’s saying she admires her old devil-may-care self instead of admitting she was wrong.

People magazine has an interview with Nicole Richie and it looks like it was filmed on the same day as her last interview we covered where she said she doesn’t like to wear makeup. They asked Nicole the same question I’ve heard them ask other celebrity moms, “When you see a pregnant woman what?s the one thing you wish you could tell her?” and her answer was quite clever. Nicole would tell pregnant women that they don’t have to put up with people touching their stomachs. She also talked about how her kids, daughter Harlow, eight and a half, and son Sparrow, seven, leave cute videos and pictures for her on her phone.
There?s not one way to raise children, there?s not one way to be a mother. It really depends on your house and your lifestyle.
When you see a pregnant woman what?s the one thing you wish you could tell her
I would say, don?t let everyone touch your stomach, don?t let everyone think they have the right to just touch you because who wants that? Nobody.
If you could redo one parenting moment, what would it be?
I was very quiet around my kids when they were babies and now they?re light sleepers so I wish that I had been a little more rough with them.
When was a time your children made you laugh really hard?
They make me laugh every day. I?m always finding pictures on my phone and videos that they take.

It’s been a long time for me but when you’re pregnant and people touch your stomach do you even get enough warning to get out of the way? Doesn’t it often happen suddenly before you have time to react? At that point, even if you catch it before it happens, how do you handle it gracefully? You could just step out of the way and say you’d prefer not to be touched but then the person will act all offended like it’s your problem. Those are the type of people who would touch a pregnant woman’s stomach in the first place – the same kind of person who would be mad if the pregnant woman said no and guarded their personal space.
Also, I don’t think that the way you act around babies when they’re sleeping influences how deeply they sleep later in life. I think how deeply a person sleeps is mostly genetic, or at least that’s what I tell myself because my son was also a light sleeper. I just looked this up and I could be right – there’s a gene that is thought to control how deeply we sleep but of course other factors, like caffeine and how sleep deprived you are, affect it. I’m one of those people who can’t have a cup of coffee or a soda after noon or I’ll be up half the night, and I bet that’s genetic too. At least coffee works for me.

Nicole Richie, 34, has been with Joel Madden for ten years (they’ve been married for six) and they have two children together, daughter Harlow, eight and a half, and son Sparrow, seven. She has a new video interview with People Magazine, I think to promote her husband’s reunion tour with his band, Good Charlotte, because that’s the only project they mention. It was funny to hear her say her children’s names out loud, since they’re not typical names I’ll just say that. People’s interview focuses on Richie’s home life and thoughts on parenthood. Unlike a lot of her celebrity mom contemporaries (see: Jennifer Garner, Gwyneth Paltrow, et al), Richie does not take a stand in the mommy wars. She’s not trying to say you shouldn’t feed your kids non-organic food or that motherhood is the pinnacle of her life. Richie sees her friends take different approaches to parenting and says that they all get along fine and no one judges each other.
How do you promote your kids’ style?
I do not dress my kids, they dress themselves. Sparrow is a boy so he does his own thing. He likes to wear all black like his dad. My daughter has very much her own style. It’s sometimes like mine… she’s a little sportier and she likes to experiment with different looks. I’m totally fine with that. I don’t want to be over her controlling what she looks like. Ultimately that is up to her
What is the most important thing a parent has taught you?
I’m so lucky I have such great mom friends. I had kids very young so I only knew two people that had kids. They are best friends. They parent like opposite. It was really so refreshing to see two women that have such different parenting styles maintain a friendship and not judge each other.
There’s not one way to raise children. There’s not one way to be a mother. It really depends on your house and your lifestyle. I guess the biggest lesson that I learned is to not judge and to be open and honest with other women. That really helps them to relax and know that they’re not alone.

Richie was 26 when she had her kids, which is the average for first time mothers in the US and isn’t particularly young, but I could see how it would seem to be when most of your friends are childless. (None of my friends were having kids that young either.) You know who has said something similar about judgy moms? Jessica Alba, surprisingly. Last year she said that it feels “like the mean girl thing from high school sort of just transforms into adulthood through motherhood.” Richie is focusing on the positive she sees in her friends with different parenting styles. I imagine that there’s a lot of mommy judging going on among that crowd, where women have more resources and time to devote to it. Many other moms are just trying to get by.
Richie doesn’t post many photos or videos of her kids but I found this dubsmash video she posted for Father’s Day with Joel and their kids last year.

Kicking off her weekend a little early, Nicole Richie headed over to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City last night (April 30).
Joined by fellow famous folks like Nicky Hilton and Jonathan Cheban, the ?Simple Life? starlet played host for the Future of Fashion Runway Show, a collection of designs from this year?s graduating class.
Nicole told press that she?s been spending a ton of time in the Land Down Under as her husband Joel Madden has been filming ?The Voice Australia.? ?I feel very close to Australia. I really do feel like it's my second home. We've spent so much time there, Joel is an honorary Australian. So I'm going to ride on his coattails there and I just assume that I'm an honorary Australian also.?

She?s never bashful about trying new hues and Nicole Richie's latest hair dye expedition has resulted in a punky Pink coif.
The ?Simple Life? star took to her Instagram account on Thursday (January 22) to share her new hairstyle (she also chopped it up) with a trio of sassy Polaroid along with the caption, ?Thinking Pink #fauxfur.? Later in the evening, Nicole headed over to the Daily Front Row Los Angeles Fashion Awards where she presented Gigi Hadid with the Model of the Year trophy.
Last year Richie decided to dye her hair lavender, telling press, ?Surprisingly, it feels like having blonde hair. My colorist Danny Moon said, ?I?m telling you, you?re not going to feel that different? ?. And he was actually right.?

The ?Candidly Nicole? babe donned a stunning blue blouse with stylish slacks as she made her way past the eager paparazzi all while wearing a coy smile.
In family news, rumors are spreading like wild fire that Nicole?s father Lionel Richie is also the daddy to reality starlet Khloe Kardashian.
According to tabs, Kris Jenner had a wild affair with Lionel in the eighties, which led to the birth of Khloe. The tabs only backer is the rumors of the affair between the pals and Khloe?s resemblance to Lionel?s youngest daughter Sofia.

This could be Paris Hilton’s idea of an April Fool’s nightmare. Nicole Richie has scored her own reality show. This show will be on VH1, which is the same network that will host LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian’s reality show. It’s not quite E! territory. Or even MTV territory. Nicole’s show will be based upon her favorite Twitter hashtag, “#CandidlyNicole.” That’s actually the name of her series too.
A new reality show based upon Twitter? This sounds like some Sh-t Your Dad Says monstrosity. People naturally want to know if Paris will appear on the show. Not bloody likely! I admire how Nicole turned her life around after that DUI. She reinvented herself into a family woman. She never looked back … until now. I do think it will be cool to see Nicole’s home. She has great decorating style. Will she hold family dinners and be shown as the only one with an empty plate? Sorry, that’s the kind of stuff that will come up in this show. This will be a hot mess:

That is the route Nicole Richie has taken with #CandidlyNicole, which, in a competitive situation, has been given a straight-to-series order by VH1 for eight episodes to premiere July 17l. Additionally, the network has signed a first look/development deal with Richie?s Honey Child Prods.
#CandidlyNicole, produced by Telepictures and World of Wonder, is based on Richie?s popular AOL online series of the same name, which in turn was based on Richie?s irreverent Twitter feed. “Nicole?s sharp, acerbic sense of humor and broad audience appeal make #CandidlyNicole a perfect fit for the VH1 brand,” said Susan Levison, VH1?s EVP Original Programming & Development. “Viewers will enjoy her unique point of view and earnest look at pop culture as well as her fearless exploration of anything and everything taboo.”
#CandidlyNicole marks Richie?s first reality starring vehicle since Fox?s The Simple Life. According to VH1, it will “detail her daily adventures and give insight into her decisions on style, relationships, her work life and her journey to adulthood.” TV personality, fashion maven and author Richie, who was a mentor on NBC?s Fashion Star, executive produces alongside Michael Baum and Carrie Franklin. She is repped by WME, Impression Entertainment and Grubman, Shire & Meiselas.

Is it just me, or does the idea of a reality show seem like slumming it for Nicole? She moved past the reality-star stigma to launch her own jewelry and accessory lines. She’s very successful and doesn’t need a silly VH1 show. Maybe Rachel Zoe will make an appearance on Nicole’s new show. I can’t believe they’re still friends after the “raisinface” incident. Remember, that was the blind item written by Nicole, and everyone knew she was talking about Zoe. Nicole is witty and acerbic, but that comment was just mean. I hope she apologized like crazy for it.

These are photos of Nicole Richie last night while hosting a Nordstrom store opening in Glendale. Nicole really went all out for this event. She combined a full-length, oriental floral print dress with odd leopard print shoes and a fussy, fringey clutch. What do you think of her dress? It’s Jean Paul Gaultier, and it is hideous. Somehow she pulls it off! There’s something to be said for poise and confidence. This getup would overpower most women on the red carpet, but Nicole makes it work. I’d still advise her to take it easy on the bronzer because she looks a bit orange.
Nicole also appears in an interview with the October issue of Elle to promote her House of Harlow jewelry. Nothing earth shattering came out of this talk, but her personality is worth it:
The new House of Harlow vibe: “Because my line is called House of Harlow 1960, people assume it’s literal. What I mean when I talk about “The ’60s” is a vibe that definitely extended into the ’70s as well. It’s about freedom and labels not really being part of your wardrobe. It’s about layering lots and lots of jewelry, and having everything transition from day to night. It’s really about that free-spirited energy and excitement that you can see in those periods, not a definite or defined year.”
She has a new dog, Iro: “At first, it was Joel’s thing. He did all the research. He was very specific about the kind of German Shepherd he wanted, and he was really involved and really excited about getting a dog, but now I’m his primary caretaker! He’s my dog for sure!”
Iro will co-star in her ads: “Because he’s a fame [ho] and he lives for the camera. [Laughs] What can I say, some men need attention, and need to be adored! And Iro is one of them!”
Her favorite hairstyle: “I am the best braider in the world. I can braid anyone’s hair, I can braid my own hair, and I can do all kinds of complicated and intricate braids. I’m a master of the braid.”
She’s not into makeup: “I’m not that kind of “lady” who always leaves the house with makeup. In fact, the only time I wear makeup is when I’m working. So I have no idea how my eyeliner stays on. All I know is that I have really talented makeup artists.”
What word would she like to retire? “Chic!”

She’s so funny, right? I always say this, but every time I read one of Nicole’s interviews, I’m startled at the way Nicole has grown and matured while Paris Hilton is trapped at age 21 for all of eternity.
I’m giggling just a bit at this picture of the Nordstrom brothers towering over Nicole. She’s got more presence than all of them combined.

Getting in a workout during a beach day with the family, Nicole Richie gave her son a piggyback ride in Malibu on Saturday (August 31).
The former reality star looked cute in a semi-sheer sleeveless top and purple pants as she hoisted Sparrow on her back for the ride.
On Wednesday, the 31-year-old fashion designer attended the Simone Camille Trunk Show at Just One Eye in Los Angeles.
Also this week, CNN announced that Nicole will host the 10th annual Style Awards, airing on September 14th at 7pm.

Treating herself to some fresh air and exercise, Nicole Richie hit up Runyon Canyon Park in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon (August 26).
Joined by actress Cara Santana, the ?#CandidlyNicole? starlet enjoyed a few laughs as she hiked around the gorgeous scenery.
Meanwhile, Nicole opened up her family dwelling for the latest issue of Domaine Home, noting that she loves to keep things ?relaxed and eclectic.?
Richie explained, ?I hate the term bohemian. Our house is the one people come to, to hang. My house has that summery look and feel all year round ? luckily for me, I live in L.A. and can get away with it.?
