Winona Ryder covers the May issue of Interview Magazine and looks deathly lovely in all of her pale beauty. Isn’t it nice to see a Hollywood actress who is embracing her natural skin color instead of coloring herself orange? The styling is also very lush and decadent as well, and this very much reminds me of the 1990s-era Winona that we’ve been missing in movies until about a year ago.
Winona is still promoting her role in The Iceman, which opened this past weekend to respectable numbers in limited release. In the movie, Winona plays the wife of Richard Kuklinski (played by Michael Shannon), who killed more than 100 people for both sport and for hire before he was arrested in 1986. Kuklinski’s nickname came from his method of freezing his victims after death so that law enforcement had a more difficult time determining when the victims had died. In this interview, Winona talks about how difficult it was to prepare for this role because it was all about pretending not to know what was going on with her character’s husband. Here are some excerpts:
The challenge of her Iceman role: “This was something that I’d never done before — this genre, true crime — and my biggest fear was that there would be something romantic about it. I could not watch all of those interviews with Richard Kuklinski that are on YouTube or do a lot of research, because what creeps me out even more than the guy himself is the fascination that other people have with this kind of violence. I mean, I get it, but I also see it as repulsive, because this was not a guy in a situation where this guy was war-torn and it was kill or be killed. He was straight-up murdering people for a lot of money.”
Prepping to play the wife of a serial killer: “I just went through the script with a Sharpie and blacked out all of the scenes where he was killing people and the ones that I wasn?t in where things were happening that she wasn’t aware of. I thought about the wives of people like Bernie Madoff and even about ‘The Sopranos.’ But I didn?t do a lot of research, because if I had, then I think I would have played it in a way that the director did not want me to play it. I just went through the script with a Sharpie and blacked out all of the scenes where he was killing people and the ones that I wasn’t in where things were happening that she wasn?t aware of — or maybe she was aware them, but was choosing to be in denial about them.”
Upon further reflection: ?On some level, she had to have known, and so I think she does bear some responsibility, and that was something that I tried to infuse into the character — a sense of greed and of, like, ‘Baby, you better go do what you gotta do, because I want to buy my Valentino suits.’ It was very important to me to show that she was not this naive, wide-eyed mother. She wants to live the way they?re living. There’s also a scene where the girls come into their bedroom and Deborah says the thing about how there are too many people in the world for God to care about all of them. That?s actually a horrible thing to say to your kids . . . While I know that a lot of people refer to her as a victim, I don?t. Maybe she didn?t know that he was, like, shooting people in the face, but to have stayed with him for that long, she had to have known on some level.”

I think Winona is correct in that her character must have known (at least to a degree) about her husband’s actions, and it’s hard to feel sorry for a woman who knew she was married to a very bad man and never questioned where the money was coming from or why so much of it landed in her husband’s hands with seemingly little effort. That’s part of why I never could feel sorry for Bernie Madoff’s wife, Ruth, either — because there was so much willful blindness involved in her way of life when, in actuality, a lot of people were getting hurt.
Mostly though, this Interview cover feature is about these pictures of Winona. Even though she’ll always be a 1990s goddess, I do think that her look is timeless.

These are photos of Winona Ryder out and about in Manhattan earlier this month and while attending the opening night of Orphans (the Broadway play that is unfortunately best known in gossip circles as the production plagued by Shia Labeouf bitchfighting with Alec Baldwin). I realize that Winona has been, for all intents and purposes, back on the Hollywood radar since her scene-stealing turn in Black Swan, but it’s still seems like a novelty to have her back in feature films that are widely available in theaters. I still don’t know how Winona was so summarily blacklisted for so many years after one shoplifting incident while Lindsay Lohan is only finally finding herself at a loss for roles after several years of (to borrow a term from Kaiser) crack shenanigans.
Currently, Winona Ryder is promoting The Iceman, so she’s been giving interviews to several outlets. Here are some excerpts from her recent talks with HuffPo and Parade. She’s so adorably dorky:
Is she picky with her roles? “Well, I mean, who knows, really? I think there was a time when — and every actor will tell you — there’s a time when you’re sort of at the height of everything and people will tell you that you’re offered everything. You’re kind of under that impression. And then, years later, you find out maybe not. Or that they offered you something that you never even got told about.”
Is she loving her career resurgence? “Well, I think I feel … I don’t want this to come across the wrong way, but I do feel like a bit more selective. I’m not saying that I’m being flooded with offers all of the time. The way the industry is now, where if you decide you want to take some time off and go to something else, it’s not as easy. Back then, I was able to do that. I was able to do it a few different times in my life. I was able to slow down — I was able to do other things I was interested it. But, now, with the Internet and this sort of instant access — which is a whole other conversation.”
She’s wary of journos: “I have been misquoted, even just in the last week when I was doing the junket in LA, someone asked me something — and it was very sort of casual — and they were talking about me and the ’90s and they said something about ‘take its toll,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, you know.’ And then I see this headline, ‘It Took Its Toll.’ So, you never know. The other one that was my favorite, my dad sent it to me because I never go on the Internet that much, ‘Winona Ryder Wants To Be In a Philip Roth Movie’ … and I wasn’t talking about an adaptation. And I actually maybe shouldn’t have said that because they were asking me about films.”
25 years on from Beetlejuice: “That is crazy. And it’s weird because I still feel, weirdly, very close to it. I just got an email from Tim [Burton]. I think there’s a nostalgia going on for that era, or something. But I do feel like Lydia, that character, really, if I hadn’t done that role, I don’t think I would have ended up an actress.”
In response to the journo’s love of A Scanner Darkly: “Well, gosh, it thrills me to no end that you brought up that movie. That makes me so happy because I think that’s such a great, brilliant movie. And you’re absolutely right. I was like not … I was in San Francisco, I was doing work with City Lights — doing a whole thing. And I wasn’t wanting to — and I got that call. It was kind of a no-brainer and it was [Richard] Linklater.”
Does she watch her old movies on tv? “Well, yeah! Now they’re considered golden oldies, which is awesome. I was watching Little Women recently, and I didn’t want to get up for fear of missing something. And Heathers is like my own Rocky Horror Picture Show; I recite the lines when it’s on. It may seem odd, but I think it’s because they’re really good movies.”

I can’t blame Winona for being unable to resist reciting her Heathers dialogue whenever the movie starts playing on TNT. It’s one of the most quotable movies in my recollection with gems like, “Great pate, mom, but I gotta motor if I wanna be ready for that party tonight,” “Tomorrow, I’ll be kissing her aerobicized ass, but tonight, let me dream of a world without Heather, a world where I am free,” and “Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up.” Great stuff.
Winona does seem truly grateful to be back in Hollywood’s good graces, doesn’t she? I think she’s here to stay for good.

These are photos of Winona Ryder looking tiny and doe-eyed at the premiere of The Iceman in LA yesterday. The film stars Michael Shannon as a contract killer for the mafia who lives the facade of a devoted family man. It’s based on “The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.” Winona stars as Kuklinski’s wife, and it also features Ray Liotta, James Franco and Chris Evans. It’s a gritty crime thriller, and the trailer got me interested. I didn’t realize the shaggy-haired bearded guy was Chris Evans, even though I had already read he was in the film. He looks totally different! (Unfortunately he wasn’t at the premiere) The Iceman currently has a respectable 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is out in limited release on May 3.

I can?t help it, I still love Janeane Garofalo. I came of age in the 1990s when she was a big deal. One of my happiest moments as a West Wing fan was when she joined the series in the last two seasons as a brash communications expert/image-maker. It?s interesting to go back and watch some of Janeane?s movies from the 1990s ? very few of them are ?good movies? but she?s good in them, and I always think that she was a better actress and a much prettier woman than people claimed. Like, everyone was always like ?She?s the normal-looking one, she?s the average one compared to [Uma Thurman, Winona Ryder, etc].? But she was always really beautiful, I thought.
Anyway, when Janeane joined her friends in NYC over the weekend for a reunion of The Ben Stiller Show, Janeane confessed something kind of funny ? she was married this whole time!
Janeane Garofalo was married for 20 years and didn?t even know it, until she needed to get divorced Saturday. She explained at a New York Comedy Festival reunion for ?The Ben Stiller Show? that she married a writer on the series ? Rob Cohen, who went on to produce ?The Big Bang Theory? ? in Las Vegas as a joke in the 1990s, and didn?t realize the nuptials had stuck.
?Rob and I got married, for real, which we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight,? Garofalo said. ?We were married for 20 years until this evening.?
She added, ?We got married drunk in Vegas . . . We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew? We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something.?
We?re told Cohen, whose credits include HBO?s ?The Life & Times of Tim,? is engaged to Jill Leiderman, a producer on ?Jimmy Kimmel Live.? While Wikipedia had described Garofalo and Cohen as married, they apparently thought it was all part of the two-decade joke.
At the reunion, called ?Oddly Familiar,? at the Paley Center for Media, director Judd Apatow asked the unwitting exes Garofalo and Cohen if either had benefitted financially from the split, which Garofalo said was notarized at a TD Bank in Midtown.
?I?m gonna get all of that ?Reality Bites? money!? Cohen joked, referring to Garofalo?s 1994 Ethan Hawke-Winona Ryder Generation X drama, which grossed $21 million.
Recalling their long-ago dating days, Garofalo quipped, ?I?m sure I was terrible,? to which Cohen responded, ?I will confirm that.? Garofalo added she no longer drinks.
Also at the reunion panel, sponsored by Svedka vodka, were Stiller, Andy Dick and ?Breaking Bad? star Bob Odenkirk, who beamed in via video. Reps for Garofalo, Cohen and Leiderman didn?t get back to us.

I can understand getting drunk-married in Vegas. I can understand being like ?OMFG, what did we do?? the next morning. What I don?t understand is never finding out if the marriage was legit FOR 20 YEARS. That?s so crazy! Also: I wonder why Janeane never got married (for real married, not drunk married)? Here’s some photos of everyone’s true love, Winona Ryder, on the New Orleans set of Homefront, and while it’s great to see her at work on a movie, that hair is giving me absolute fits because it looks so not very Winona-like. Those are some wild and wavy ombre extensions, which are all the rage for Hollywood starlets while playing characters who can be found at the margins of society with Jessica Alba, Rooney Mara, and Selena Gomez all recently taking the plunge by way of either extensions or wigs (and of course, Lea Michele and Jessica Biel do ombre just for the hell of it too). Winona usually keeps to her sleek, black hairstyles, so it’s kind of strange to see her like this, but it’s only for a movie, right?
In the film, Winona plays the tough, biker-girl sidekick of a methamphetamine drug lord portrayed by James Franco (naturally), who is mercifully not present in these photos because I don’t think I could handle his pretention at this very moment while taking in the shock of Winona’s wild new hair. Oddly enough, this is not the Ryder-Franco movie that we heard about a year ago, which means that now there are two of them. Winona had best be careful, or she’ll find James hiding in her trailer whilst taking photos of her butt and calling it AAART. Fortunately, Jason Statham was present on the set, so we do have a picture of him, and his hair never changes.
Winona was also smoking a lot on the set, but it’s unclear whether she was actually indulging for herself or for her crazy, ombre character. I’m guessing the correct answer here is “both.”

These are photos of Winona Ryder at last night?s LA premiere of Tim Burton?s Frankenweenie, which I have to admit, looks really good. Not so much for really little kids, right? But kids around 10-13 years old will probably enjoy the hell out of it? I have no frame of reference. My parents let me watch R-rated movies when I was really little, so I?ve always been warped. Anyway, Winona does voice work for the film, so she?s been doing some red carpet promotion over the past week.
At last night?s premiere, Winona wore this vintage dress with Sergio Rossi pumps. Does it work on her? Is it too ?precious?? Or is it just classic Winona? I don?t really mind the dress? it suits her. But I do mind the eyebrows and whatever is going on with her face. Some of you have claimed that Winona had a bad eyelift or facelift, something that has given her face a look of permanent ?surprise!? I?m starting to believe you.
In other Winona news, there are rumors (heavy rumors) that Tim Burton and some other people are working on a Beetlejuice sequel. During a junket for Frankenweenie, Winona and Tim fielded some questions:
As you may have heard, Tim Burton is making a sequel to Beetlejuice. Seth Grahame-Smith, the screenwriter behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is working on a draft at the moment. Michael Keaton will be returning. Some of us are cautiously optimistic, and the majority of us are terrified at the impending ruin of our childhoods. It seems like those involved in the original might be with the majority of us.
At the Frankenweenie press junket in Anaheim on Sunday, a reporter enthusiastically told Winona Ryder that she was very excited for Beetlejuice 2 and hoped that Ryder would be in the movie. Ryder had just spent the fifteen minutes prior gushing about her emotional connection to all of her roles in Burton’s movies, with a particular emphasis on Lydia. Given that, you’d think she might be pretty enthusiastic about the new movie, or at least somewhat optimistic. Instead, her response was a heavy sigh, a roll of the eyes, and a “Yeah, that would be…great.”
Tim Burton himself seemed more optimistic about the project, but was surprisingly hands-off about the whole thing. When asked about the project, he sounded somewhat uncomfortable and gave a non-answer. “Somebody’s writing a version, but I’m sort of…not making any preconceived ideas about it, and…not over-thinking something that I haven’t seen, so I’m just kind of keeping an open mind about it and seeing what comes.” Burton said that he is passionate about every project he goes into, so he could just have his mind on other work, but it seems odd for him to be quite as distant as he is.

I think the eyeroll, the sigh and Tim?s ?distance? from all of it are all part of the same cautiousness ? maybe they don?t want to get their hopes up in case it doesn?t happen? There are a lot of ways for a potential sequel to go wrong, but it?s only going to be ?right? if they get everyone back together again. That includes Michael Keaton, Winona, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and probably Catherine O?Hara too.

When we last left Winona Ryder, she was looking scared to death in Venice, like she was searching the crowd for a team of Winona-specific predators. She was also making many of us nostalgic for the days when Winona was a big deal, when she was the hottest thing around, and all of us wanted to look like her. Well, Winona is now 40 years old (vampire!!) and she?s aiming for a steady career comeback ? and she?s doing it the right way, I think, through smaller films and supporting parts. These are photos of Winona promoting The Iceman (same film she was working in Venice) with Chris Evans, Ray Liotta and my murder-eyed crush, Michael Shannon.
I can?t find the designer IDs for either of the dresses that Winona wore at TIFF. She chose a lovely green, buttony dress for the photo call, and a puffy-skirted LBD for the TIFF premiere. She also kept her hair down for the photo call ? look how long her hair is these days! Remember when she kept it short? Remember how all of the girls wished they could pull off Winona?s spiky little ?do? I remember that. Anyway, Winona doesn?t look as terrified in these photos, but she still seems kind of overwhelmed.
I had no idea Chris Evans was in this film. The Iceman has a great cast!

Gathering together to premiere their latest movie, the stars of ?The Iceman? were on hand at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday night (September 10).
Female lead in the film Winona Ryder looked elegant in a simple black dress with open toe heels while her fellow male co-stars Chris Evans and Michael Shannon looked dapper for their red carpet appearance.
Shannon recently spoke with The Canadian Press about the project saying, "It's different now, for a long time when I did films I was supporting, a player, or cameo and now I've got a couple under my belt where, here I am, the title character, which is nothing I ever anticipated."
Though Michael and director Ariel Vromen knew he would be great for the character, Vromen had other concerns as the actor explained, ?It's funny because when Vromen first started trying to put this movie together, he told me -- he was very candid -- he said, 'I would love for you to play this part but I don't know if I can get the financing with you in the part,' because you know, we all know how that works."
?The Iceman? is the true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. It also stars Ray Liotta and is slated to hit theaters on March 14. Watch the trailer below!

Bringing their project to the beautiful city of Venice, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta and Michael Shannon were on hand for ?The Iceman? premiere at the Palazzo del Cinema on Thursday evening (August 30).
While taking part in the 69th Venice Film Festival, the 40-year-old actress looked lovely in an elegant black gown that displayed her fit physique.
Amidst the star-studded premiere, the trailer for the Ariel Vromen directed film was released, which tells the story of a loving husband and devoted father, played by Shannon, who also happens to have a secret life as a brutal hit man.
Also featuring James Franco and an unrecognizable Chris Evans, the film is set to screen at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.
