Ethan Hawke brags about daughter Maya, 20, on Stranger Things
I just started watching Stranger Things last week. I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I am not a fan of horror, so I?d stayed away, but finally caved. I am really glad that I did. I?m about halfway through the third season and am enjoying it. One of the additions to the cast this year is Ethan Hawke?s daughter, Maya. Without revealing anything, I?ll say that I love her character and the relationships that she?s formed with other characters on the show. I?ve read reactions online from others who feel similarly. Maya?s biggest fan, though, is probably her dad. He posted a really sweet message on Instagram, gushing about Maya being ?the real thing?:

Just days after the third season of Stranger Things began streaming on Netflix, [Ethan Hawke] shared a sweet post praising his daughter Maya, 20, for her role in the series.

?Some of you may have missed her in last year?s BBC production of Little Women. Some of you may have missed her work at Juilliard. I know many missed out on numerous high school productions ? heck I even missed a few and I?m her father,? he wrote on Instagram alongside a promotional video of Maya in character as Robin, a teenager who works at a sailor-themed ice cream parlor with Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and ends up helping the Hawkins crew in their fight against evil.

?Some of you may know her music, some may not. But Ladies & Gentleman, get to know MAYA HAWKE. She?s the real thing,? the actor, 48, added of his eldest child with ex-wife Uma Thurman.

The sweet post quickly caught the eyes of several of the actor?s celebrity followers ? including one of Maya?s new costars.

?She sure is!! AMAZING!!!? wrote Andy Cohen, adding several lightening bolt emojis.

Agreeing with the actor?s praise, Big Little Lies star Laura Dern added, ?Yes, she is!?

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the hit Netflix series, also commented on the post, writing, ?Yay Dad!?

[From People]

Like I said, I really like Maya?s character, and think she deserves the praise she?s getting. Celebitchy said that she really looks like Uma. I think that Maya also sounds a bit like her, too. People reported that Maya had explained of her character, ?throughout the season she became more and more like me. I bring a lot of energy, maybe from nerves or something, but they kind of tapped into that and then started to write the character more along those lines,? I think that was something that was discussed on Beyond Stranger Things, too: Not about Maya?s character, since the show was filmed after Season 2, but that the shows creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have paid attention to the actors and so some of their traits have been written into the characters that they play. The Duffer Brothers (as they are collectively known) also kept around characters after their initial appearances because of the actors? talent and have developed certain characters in ways that they hadn?t initially planned. I?m not looking forward to finishing this season and having to wait for Season 4. I just hope Maya?s character is around for a while!

Ethan Hawke: 'Having three daughters' it really does turn you into a feminist'
I have a well-documented Ethan Hawke problem. I know I should find him gross, but I just? don?t. I still find him attractive. If anything, I find him more attractive these days than during his ?90s heyday. Ethan is promoting his new film Good Kill, which is about drones and whether military drones are a good thing, etc. Honestly, the drone talk (from Ethan) is kind of boring. But I enjoyed his thoughts on women, feminism and the roles that got away. Ethan spoke to Larry King about all of this stuff ? you can see the video interview here. Some of the assorted quotes I found interesting:

Being directed by a woman: “I have been making movies for thirty years, I’ve probably made over forty movies, and this year is the first time I’ve been directed by a woman. People think that gender equality has happened- and it’s fascinating having three daughters, and seeing the world through their eyes, it really does turn you into a feminist.?

On Dead Poet’s Society: ?It’s the only movie I’ve ever done that really changed my life.”

Turning down roles: “One of the best roles I ever turned down, I knew I was wrong for it. They were wrong to offer it to me. The guy who did it was great. The stupidest one I ever turned down was Independence Day, they offered me Will Smith’s part.”

His favorite film: “[My] favorite would probably have to be Boyhood, only because what a special experience that was, that’s so unlike other parts that I’ve played.”

The best part about Hollywood: “The women.”

His advice to child actors: “If you take out, if you look at the history of the arts, of who succeeds, if you just eliminate self destruction, if you just decide that I will not self implode, if you decide that, your chances of excelling at what you do go up 90%. So many people sabotage themselves, particularly artistic people, but all of us. A lot of us a feeling that we don’t deserve success, a lot of us have a feeling we’re our own worst critics, and there is no shame in loving yourself and treating yourself with the respect with which you would treat someone you love, and taking care of your talent.”

[From Ora TV]

Ethan Hawke was offered the Will Smith role in Independence Day? And he turned it down?! That?s so bizarre. I?d love to know the other part he?s talking about ? for some reason, I just got an image of Mark Ruffalo. Like, I could see how Ruffalo and Hawke might be up for some of the same parts. As for Ethan?s feminism? eh. It would be nice if a dude could be a feminist without having daughters, but sure, I?ll take it.

Ethan Hawke: People wanted Angelina Jolie to 'burn out' like Marilyn Monroe
God help me, I still think Ethan Hawke is gross-hot. Like, I completely understand when people say that he?s gross, that he?s smug, that he?s arrogant, that his facial hair is weak, all of it. And I agree. But I still find him attractive. UGH I have issues, I know. These are photos of Ethan out and about in NYC this week ? he?s still promoting Boyhood, plus some other projects I think. Honestly though, Ethan will talk about anything. You can sit down with him to talk about his latest project and he ends up talking about Marvel or? Angelina Jolie?

Tell Us how to get on that list! Ethan Hawke revealed to USA Today on Tuesday, Jan. 6, that he and his Taking Lives costar Angelina Jolie still keep in touch — via holiday cards!

“Every now and then, I get a Christmas card,” the Boyhood actor, 44, told the paper.

He then reflected on what it was like to work alongside Jolie over ten years ago, before she had even started her romance with now-husband Brad Pitt. In 2003 (when Taking Lives was filmed), Jolie had recently filed for divorce from Billy Bob Thornton and was raising her eldest son Maddox, then 2, on her own. A year later, the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actress would meet the love of her life Pitt, with whom she would eventually share six children.

“I worked with her at a very interesting moment in her life,” Hawke, 44, recalled. “It?s pretty awesome what she?s doing. People wanted her to be Marilyn Monroe. They wanted her to burn out. She was about as punk rock as a movie star could be. I loved her for it.”

Hawke praised the Unbroken director for her work as a humanitarian. “She?s taken all that energy and turned that into being a substantive human being,” the Before Sunrise star noted. “The fact that Angelina has transcended the way the world objectified her and is making serious films, she deserves all the positive things that are happening.”

[From Us Weekly]

Aw. That?s really nice. I don?t have any shade for what he said. And I agree that Angelina was pretty punk rock? back in the day. I don?t think she?s punk at all these days. Then again, I don?t think she wants to be punk. So, did Ethan and Angelina have a thing back in the day? He always talks about her and he still has such nice things to say about her, consistently. Does that prove that they never bumped uglies?

Also, I would love to see Angelina?s Christmas card.

Ethan Hawke, feminist: 'My wife says I?m the best lover in the world'
Yes, Ethan Hawke is the very definition of ?doucheface.? But OMG, I would hit it. I always say that and I always get yelled at for it. But I am unashamed. Anyway, Ethan is promoting his new Richard Linklater film, Boyhood, which is getting really, really good reviews. To promote the film, Ethan did my favorite Us Weekly feature, ?25 Things.? Ethan?s 25 Things are funny/interesting/infuriating, not least of which is that he self-identifies as a feminist (yet he?ll give interviews about how much he hates monogamy and fidelity).

1. I sometimes wear a goatee because I can’t grow a full beard.

2. I try to never be late.

3. Sometimes I am late.

4. My first kiss was right after the slow skate at a roller rink in Hamilton, New Jersey.

5. One of my favorite costars remains a half-breed wolf I met on the White Fang set in Alaska.

6. I have three daughters [Maya, 16, Clementine, 6, and Indiana, 3], all born in July.

7. I have a dog named Nina, after Nina Simone, and a cat named Rascal, after the book Rascal by Sterling North.

8. I am a feminist.

9. I hate vacations.

10. Unless my wife hides all the candy and sweets in our house, I will eat them all.

11. I have lived in New York City for 25 years.

12. I am 43 years old and have been in 43 films.

13. I love Mexican food.

14. I won High Times magazine’s Best Actor Bong for my performance in Richard Linklater’s Tape.

15. My son [Levon, 12] can beat me at table tennis, but I can beat him in basketball. (I’m still taller.)

16. My favorite thing to do is go to the movies. I could, I’d see three films in a day.

17. My mother [Leslie] founded and runs a non-profit in Romania for educational rights for the poor.

18. I have published two novels, Ash Wednesday and The Hottest State.

19. My stepbrother [Patrick Powers] is a member of the Green Berets.

20. I’ve never had a cavity.

21. I have a motorcycle license but no motorcycle (four kids, remember).

22. My wife [Ryan] says I’m the best lover in the world.

23. My mother says I’m really smart.

24. My kids say I’m the world’s best dad.

25. My wife, my mother, and my kids are the smartest people I know.

[From Us Weekly]

His wife says he?s the best lover in the world? Your move, Clive Owen! Gah. Is it wrong that I think Ethan probably is really good in bed? It?s always the weird ones. They surprise you. I like that he admits that he can?t grow a full beard. We know, dude. But if you?re going to wear a goatee, could you at least groom it a little? Thanks.

As for Ethan self-identifying as feminist? I have my doubts about just how ?feminist? he is in real life, but I always applaud any man who realizes the important of self-identifying as such and being an ally to women?s rights. Especially for a father of three girls (all born in July, that?s so random).

Here?s the trailer for Boyhood:

Ethan Hawke: 'People have such a childish view of monogamy & fidelity'
Back in August, Ethan Hawke gave a very interesting interview to Elle Mag about monogamy, marriage and sex. The gist of the interview was that Ethan has a more ?fluid? idea of what constitutes ?trust? and ?fidelity? within a committed relationship, and he almost (!) admitted that he cheated on Uma Thurman during their marriage (which everyone thinks he did, so maybe he should just admit and own it). Ethan?s summary point seemed to be: ?The bottom line is our species is not monogamous. Go talk to a doctor.? As in, it?s his biological necessity to screw around. Doctors have enabled him, that?s how he knows! Well, Ethan has a new interview with Mr. Porter, and he returns to his favorite subject, monogamy and how it has outlived its usefulness. You can read the full Mr. Porter piece here, and here are some highlights:

He grew up in Texas: “[I was] like any young kid wanting attention”. His parents divorced when he was young. “My mother moved around, so every year I was the new kid at school. There was a certain amount of alienation, but you learn to move within a space, to be the person or character others want you to be.”

Every young person?“thinks they’re incredibly unique in their alienation or loneliness. But in a lot of ways I was really average.?

Stage work: The stage is Mr Hawke’s first love, “not because I prefer theatre to movies but because it’s a so much more disciplined art form. You’ve got to be a total moron to be terrible in a movie, there are so many people helping you. On stage it’s easy to be terrible: you have to control your body, breath and temper.” The reason British actors win so many awards, he says, is because they’re so well trained. The older actors Mr Hawke admires include Ms Vanessa Redgrave – “the Bob Dylan of actors” as he calls her – “who haven’t gotten lost to the trappings of vanity the profession lavishes on you.”

His ?90s heartthrob status: “I never defined myself as that. If you invest a lot in that it’s broken the mind of more than one actor. I wanted to look like Harry Dean Stanton. I always felt my boyish looks prevented me from being considered for serious roles.” Did he have lots of sex as a young star? He smiles. “It was like shooting slingshots or riding a skateboard and doing crazy jumps. I feel very lucky that when I was 23 I was really 23.”

Why did he and Uma Thurman split? “We tried to be as optimistic as we could be: we all want to believe in love and the possibility of love. The older you get, the more you realise how powerful love is. You understand the right ways for emotion to lead your life and the dangerous ways. I don’t regret marrying early. Gattaca was a great moment in my life and a great moment in Uma Thurman’s life and we fell madly in love and wanted to do all that.”

Monogamy & fidelity: “People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity. ‘He’s cheated so he’s bad, she’s cheated so she’s bad’, as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous. To act all indignant, that your world has been rocked because your lover wasn’t faithful to you, is a little bit like acting rocked that your hair went grey.”

Is he monogamous? “I am, but in Before Midnight there is the threat of sexual attraction to others and maintaining your sexual identity with your partner over a long period of time. Human beings are sexual beings.” Mr Hawke adds, emphatically, “My relationship with my present wife is thrilling to me and I’m committed to it. But neither she nor I know what shape the future will come in. Sexual fidelity can’t be the whole thing you hang your relationship on. If you really love somebody you want them to grow, but you don’t get to define how that happens. They do.”

Aging: “Turning 40 was super hard, I had always seen myself as ‘the kid’: I started a theatre company at 23, published my first book at 25. I went from being a really old young person to a really young old person. When you’re 35, 36, you’re still trying to be 28, flirting like crazy, staying out late. Now I’m turning my eye to the benefits of ageing. However, anybody who says vanity is not part of life is not telling the truth,” he adds. Indeed, the actor has always been told he has the teeth of an Englishman. “I know that’s not a compliment. When I was younger I was told they gave me character, but now I have character so…,” he laughs. “Ageing is awkward, but you have to let it happen. Flowers bloom, then they dry, but even then they have a kind of beauty.”

[From Mr. Porter]

During the interview, Ethan admits that Maya (his oldest kid) read his Elle interview and ?begged? him to consider her feelings when discussing his first marriage and Uma. I think that?s what we have now ? in the Elle interview in August, Ethan was being candid and off-the-cuff, and now he?s trying to be more circumspect. I would also suspect that Ethan?s current wife, Ryan Shawhughes, had some stuff to say about the way he made their marriage sound in the Elle interview. Thus, he?s emphasizing how he?s faithful to her (RIGHT NOW) but that it could totally change at any moment because he?s totally human, okay? Like, it?s not even under his control. This sort of mystifies me: ?If you really love somebody you want them to grow, but you don’t get to define how that happens. They do.? So, ?growing as a human being? = banging other people? So confused.

Ethan Hawke loves fast cars: 'There's some 13-year-old boy inside every grown man'
Here are some photos of Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke at last night?s premiere of Getaway, that really stupid-looking movie they did together. Something about Ethan?s wife being kidnapped and Selena is trying to help him and they?re in a car driving really fast, etc. It seems like the kind of script written for Jason Statham, not Ethan. Interestingly enough, Ethan brought out his older kids as his ?dates? for the premiere ? that beautiful young woman is 15-year-old Maya, and the blonde boy is Levon. Their mother is Uma Thurman, obviously. I can?t get over Maya! She?ll probably try her hand at modeling, don?t you think? Also: I can?t help it, I think Ethan looks really sexy in these photos. Ugh.

Anyway, Ethan is still giving interviews to support Getaway, and this one that he gave to Crave Online is pretty good. It?s not as controversial as his Elle interview (where he basically said monogamy is a joke), but there are some good quotes:

Doing such a ?Fast & Furious? movie: ?There?s some 13-year-old boy inside every grown man, maybe not every, but that longs to know what it?s like to drive 100 miles an hour and smash into things. That little part of me is both fast and furious so I played him both ways.?

Doing movies that make money: ?Believe it or not, The Purge actually opened bigger than Training Day. It?s always strange to me how these things work out. It?s like this year seems to be a different chapters to a life, particularly a life in the movies. For me, I think I?ve entered some other new chapter. This summer has been a lot of fun. As you said, the funny thing about Before Midnight is that movie?s a long time coming. I cowrote that movie. That movie is a big part of me and my ethos and what I believe in with cinema. I really love it. The funny thing about The Purge is Jason Blum was my old partner. We started a theater company together when he was right out of college and I was hanging out in New York. We?ve has 20 years of hanging out and talking about movies and talking about how to beat the system. One of the things that?s remarkable about The Purge that people don?t even really talk about is we made that movie for under three million dollars. That movie cost less than Before Midnight.?

He?s getting more offers now: ?You know, it really has. It?s funny, this business. I?ve seen it. Dead Poets Society came out the summer of 1989. What?s that, 24 years ago? So it?s been a long time. For me to get to make movies and continue to make relevant movies is a real sleight of hand trick. Yet, it?s totally true. If you don?t make people money, you don?t ever get jobs. The way I like to think about it is when movies are successful, it gives all the different people who secretly wanted to hire you before the ammunition to do it.?

Working on a film with multiple cameras going at once: ?Yeah. I?ve never really loved, like a lot of directors love to roll two cameras. Maybe it?s just because in my heart of hearts I?m a stage actor. I kind of love a proscenium. I love to know where the audience is at any given moment during a movie. One of the really difficult things about this movie is I never did. They weren?t rolling two cameras. They were rolling 15 cameras all the time, all these little GoPros, all these little mounted cameras so you never had any real sense of where the audience is. What happens is you end up just having to rely tremendously on the editor.?

He never comes to sets just to watch: ?No, I spent my life on film sets. It?s so boring, film sets. When you?re not involved in it, it?s kind of like watching paint dry.?

[From Crave Online]

Ethan can be so pretentious. I mean, I?ve always known that about him, but he dropped in ?I?m a writer? several times, and the whole ?Maybe it?s just because in my heart of hearts I?m a stage actor. I kind of love a proscenium? gave me a fit of eyerolls. Bless his heart. I have to give him credit though ? he?s become something of a journeyman character actor, and he really is capable of giving these really interesting, diverse performances.

Selena is wearing Vera Wang, by the way. It?s pretty and kind of meh all at once.

Ethan Hawke: 'The bottom line is our species is not monogamous'
I can?t help it, you guys. I love Ethan Hawke. My love for Ethan has grown through the years. Back when everyone loved him (the ?90s), I thought he was a douchebag. But in the aughts and teens, I just can?t get enough of him. He?s grown into a very interesting man. So of course I was all over his new Elle interview. Ethan is promoting yet another dumb-looking action film, this one is called Getaway and it features? Selena Gomez. I don?t even care enough to embed the trailer (because it?s awful). But here?s the full Elle interview to make up for it:

ELLE: Do you remember the first girl who paid attention to you?

Ethan Hawke: Who doesn?t? In high school, I was just a guy who could never find his pen. A year later I did Dead Poets Society, and suddenly I was very interesting to girls. Sadly, I spent the bulk of 18 to 25?when I should have been partying my face off and gathering ye rosebuds while ye may?hopelessly insecure.

ELLE: Which felt better: having your first novel published or losing your virginity?

EH: Which felt better? Losing my virginity felt much better. That?s unquestionable.

ELLE: Okay. Which reviews were better?

EH: [Laughs] That?s well said. I remember the reviews for both, and they weren?t all good. I was very, very lucky. I lost my virginity to someone I cared for very much and who cared very much for me. The thing that?s so important for young people to know is that, if you use protection, sex is one of the few vices that you can really enjoy as a young person.

ELLE: You?ve played some incredibly romantic characters. Did women expect you to be that guy?

EH: I can?t tell you how many times in the ?90s I?d meet somebody, we?d be having a nice time, and they?d sigh and go, ?This is exactly like Before Sunrise.? And I?d have to get up and leave.

ELLE: Before Midnight is about fighting for romance in your forties. Julie Delpy?s character, Celine, criticizes your character, saying, ?You have sex the exact same way every time.? Did you write that line?

EH: What kind of idiot would I be to answer that question?

ELLE: I read it was autobiographical.

EH: [Laughs] The sincere answer to that question is, I?m the most dynamic lover this world has ever seen since Giacomo Casanova.

ELLE: Before Sunset is rare in that we root for the married guy to cheat on his wife.

EH: I was secretly extremely proud of that. [Laughs] It?s one of my great achievements. We live in an absolutely Victorian age. Everybody wants to believe you fall in love and monogamy is no longer an issue. The bottom line is our species is not monogamous. Go talk to a doctor.

ELLE: Before Midnight seems to argue that an affair is okay provided it?s only physical. And you come home. True?

EH: Part of what we love about people are their secrets?their inner life that you can?t touch. Yet once we?re in that close relationship, we want to own them in total. [Laughs] Like Jesse, I refuse to answer. It?s undignified to. But I?ll say this: If Bill Clinton had had a brain, he would?ve pleaded the Fifth. It?s better than lying. Lying is the problem.

ELLE: You were only 27 when you first got married. Did you feel ready?

EH: Success when you?re young is really overwhelming. The world felt out of control. And I wanted to stop it from spinning so fast. I thought marriage would decrease my variables or something. I was absolutely wrong. [Pause] There was this discovery that the male brain isn?t done until 28. I definitely think my frontal lobe was not finished. I had no business taking vows that would last more than two weeks. My personal opinion? The guy who?s got it right is Derek Jeter. He lives his life like, ?Hey man, I play shortstop for the New York Yankees. And I?m not going to get married until I?m no longer a shortstop for the New York Yankees.? Which is incredibly smart.

ELLE: Did you share any of this advice with your latest costar, Selena Gomez?

EH: Yeah, but young people always think their problems are so unique. I know I felt that way. Around the time of Reality Bites, I met Debbie Reynolds at a dinner party. And she offered me all of this fantastic advice about, you know, her divorce from Eddie Fisher, and Liz Taylor, and how to separate acting from public life. I remember thinking, What does this lady know right now? The funny thing is, everything she said to me that night was true. If I could have heard her, I would have avoided so many mistakes.

ELLE: You lived at the Chelsea Hotel for a while. Were there some wild nights?

EH: I met Arthur Miller in the hallway. He was with this girl. It was this old guy standing at the elevator with this incredibly beautiful young woman that I was kind of making googly eyes with. Then I realized she was his girlfriend. I thought, Man, s–t. Life is interesting.

ELLE: Other than from Debbie Reynolds, ever receive any particularly valuable advice about women?

EH: My grandfather told me the greatest thing about aging is that, by the time you?re 90, you?re intimidated by no one and attracted to everyone. When you?re 30, you think a 50-year-old woman is?nah. But when you?re 70, a 50-year-old woman is smoking! When you?re 90, a 60-year-old woman is hot.

[From Elle]

Even though I still would hit that in a heartbeat (what is wrong with me?!), I kind of hate him for making this argument: ?We live in an absolutely Victorian age. Everybody wants to believe you fall in love and monogamy is no longer an issue. The bottom line is our species is not monogamous. Go talk to a doctor.? I hate when men use the ?it?s biology that makes us cheat? excuse. Grow up. YOU talk to a doctor. I think if a man really feels that way ? that it?s his biological destiny to be unfaithful and he can?t help himself ? then yes, he has no business getting married. At all. Just take yourself out of the equation as far as committed relationships go if that?s how you really feel. But here?s the question: is Ethan basically saying that he screws around on his wife and then tells her ?it?s biology?? Douchebag.

Ethan Hawke Did the Best AMA
Ethan Hawke held an AMA on Reddit yesterday to promote Before Midnight andThe Purge (seen it, won’t see again, sorry Ethan)and it ended up being one of the more genuine AMA’s any celebrity has done. There were very little one sentence answers and he even took the time to answer each part of multiple part questions. It seemed like he was having a blast unlike Woody Harrelson who couldn’t wait to leave.

On how scary Philip Seymour Hoffman is in real life:When I first met Phil, he was often the reader when I would go in to audition for something – the kind of actor that wasn’t going to get the part, but he was good, so they hired him to read with all the other guys auditioning. He was intimidating then, and he’s intimidating now. What a lot of people don’t know about him is that he’s a member of the Labyrinth Theater company here in New York, and is a truly phenomenal theatrical director. His production of THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT is one of the best evenings in the theatre I’ve ever spent.

On working with River Phoenix in Explorers:River was one of those people that had that strange magic glow around them; he could drive you crazy, or make you fall in love with him, sometimes in the same minute. I remember knowing he was special when in the first days of filming EXPLORERS – we were staying in a motel outside of San Francisco, and I saw him practicing his character’s walk in the parking lot one of the mornings before shooting began. Uncommon behavior for a 13-year old. He had a big, beautiful family, and was the first vegetarian I ever met.

On the trade-offs of being a celebrity:My kids and I always have a debate about if the positives outweigh the negatives. Great seats to the Nicks game vs. being hounded for autographs at halftime. Every give has a take. For me, the blessings far outweigh the curses. I consider it a kind of luxury tax. For my family, I think it’s more difficult; they don’t get to work with Denzel Washington and Sidney Lumet, but they still have the paparazzi.

On Nic Cage, the one true god:I’m kind of obsessed with Nic Cage. I just found out about/r/onetruegodtoo. He’s the only actor since Marlon Brando that’s actually done anything new with the art of acting; he’s successfully taken us away from an obsession with naturalism into a kind of presentation style of acting that I imagine was popular with the old troubadours. If I could erase his bottom half bad movies, and only keep his top half movies, he would blow everyone else out of the water. He’s put a little too much water in his beer, but he is still one of the great actors of our time. And working with him was an absolute pleasure. In fact, one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever done is the last scene in LORD OF WAR.

On looking like Gordon Freeman from Half-Life and getting older:No, they haven’t, but I just looked at his picture and he looks a little bit creepy. Do I look that creepy? One of the things that sucks about getting older is that you start to look kind of creepy…

My solution to looking creepier as you get older is to wear the face of a younger man. Works like a charm.

Ethan Hawke hates Oscar season: 'It's so asinine, I think it's really destructive'

Ethan Hawke hates Oscar season: 'It's so asinine, I think it's really destructive'
Did you know Ethan Hawke has been nominated for an Oscar twice? True story. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2002 for Training Day, and then he was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Before Sunset in 2005. So? Ethan has been around award shows and stuff, and he?s been a working actor for decades (he?s 42 years old right now). Does the fact that he?s been a working actor and an Oscar-nominated actor and writer mean that he gets to criticize the awards shows and the industry? Because he is.

Joaquin Phoenix called the Oscars bulls – - t this year. But ?The Master? star isn?t the only actor taking exception to the annual awards.

Ethan Hawke says in the new issue of Gotham magazine, ?People want to turn everything in this country into a competition . . . [so] it?s clear who the winner is and who the loser is.?

The two-time nominee adds: ?It?s why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it?s a way of saying, ?This one is No. 1.? It?s so asinine . . . if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it?s really destructive.?

[From Page Six]

Maybe I?m an Ethan Hawke apologist (true story), but I actually think Ethan?s comments are more nuanced than Joaquin Phoenix?s expletive-filled rant last year, in which Phoenix said: ?I think it?s bullsh-t? I don?t want to be a part of it. I don?t believe in it. It?s a carrot, but it?s the worst-tasting carrot I?ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don?t want this carrot. It?s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other . . . It?s the stupidest thing in the whole world.?

Ethan is making it less about the Oscar campaigns in general and more about the (American?) need to declare a winner and a loser, and how the award doesn?t necessarily mean you were ?the best?. That being said, it sounds like Ethan has a case of the sore-loser-syndrome. Because you know what?s interesting if you nit-pick what Ethan says? That he?s a judgy bitch who judges when ?mediocre actors? get awards, meaning he DOES adhere to some kind of system in which he ranks the quality of actors. Which defeats his point about winners and losers.

Janeane Garofalo was secretly married for 20 years and she didn't even know it
I can?t help it, I still love Janeane Garofalo. I came of age in the 1990s when she was a big deal. One of my happiest moments as a West Wing fan was when she joined the series in the last two seasons as a brash communications expert/image-maker. It?s interesting to go back and watch some of Janeane?s movies from the 1990s ? very few of them are ?good movies? but she?s good in them, and I always think that she was a better actress and a much prettier woman than people claimed. Like, everyone was always like ?She?s the normal-looking one, she?s the average one compared to [Uma Thurman, Winona Ryder, etc].? But she was always really beautiful, I thought.

Anyway, when Janeane joined her friends in NYC over the weekend for a reunion of The Ben Stiller Show, Janeane confessed something kind of funny ? she was married this whole time!

Janeane Garofalo was married for 20 years and didn?t even know it, until she needed to get divorced Saturday. She explained at a New York Comedy Festival reunion for ?The Ben Stiller Show? that she married a writer on the series ? Rob Cohen, who went on to produce ?The Big Bang Theory? ? in Las Vegas as a joke in the 1990s, and didn?t realize the nuptials had stuck.

?Rob and I got married, for real, which we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight,? Garofalo said. ?We were married for 20 years until this evening.?

She added, ?We got married drunk in Vegas . . . We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew? We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something.?

We?re told Cohen, whose credits include HBO?s ?The Life & Times of Tim,? is engaged to Jill Leiderman, a producer on ?Jimmy Kimmel Live.? While Wikipedia had described Garofalo and Cohen as married, they apparently thought it was all part of the two-decade joke.

At the reunion, called ?Oddly Familiar,? at the Paley Center for Media, director Judd Apatow asked the unwitting exes Garofalo and Cohen if either had benefitted financially from the split, which Garofalo said was notarized at a TD Bank in Midtown.

?I?m gonna get all of that ?Reality Bites? money!? Cohen joked, referring to Garofalo?s 1994 Ethan Hawke-Winona Ryder Generation X drama, which grossed $21 million.

Recalling their long-ago dating days, Garofalo quipped, ?I?m sure I was terrible,? to which Cohen responded, ?I will confirm that.? Garofalo added she no longer drinks.

Also at the reunion panel, sponsored by Svedka vodka, were Stiller, Andy Dick and ?Breaking Bad? star Bob Odenkirk, who beamed in via video. Reps for Garofalo, Cohen and Leiderman didn?t get back to us.

I can understand getting drunk-married in Vegas. I can understand being like ?OMFG, what did we do?? the next morning. What I don?t understand is never finding out if the marriage was legit FOR 20 YEARS. That?s so crazy! Also: I wonder why Janeane never got married (for real married, not drunk married)? These are some recent photos of her too ? she looks exactly the same as she did in the 1990s. Hipster vampire!
