Last year, I was sort of obsessed with Natalie Portman?s attempt to produce her own starring vehicle, Jane Got A Gun. Portman signed on as a producer early on, and she hand-picked many of the people involved, like director Lynne Ramsey and costar Michael Fassbender. Then everything fell apart spectacularly. Ramsey pulled out on the first day of filming. Fassbender and Jude Law pulled out. Natalie begged several of her friends to take parts in the film and most of them refused. They had to get a new director, and his first order of business was shutting down the production. And to top it all off, there were reports that Natalie and her crack production team didn?t know what the hell they were doing, and that Natalie was throwing tantrums all over the place.
At the end of the day, Jane Got a Gun managed to complete their production. It was tentatively scheduled for an August release this year. But it got pushed back? until February 2015. Ouch.
The cinematic woes surrounding Jane Got A Gun have been an absolute nightmare, and it looks like things just got a little bit worse for the ailing Western production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been shifted from its preliminary launch window, thereby pushing the Natalie Portman-led project from its rather tentative August 29, 2014 release date, to February 20, 2015 instead.
In truth, this can?t be good for the movie, because even if it does end up seeing the light of day, February is a near-guaranteed death trap, meaning it will likely lose a bunch of money and end up forgotten by the year?s end. Unless it?s really good, of course, in which case it may stand a decent chance of at least proving that it was worth all of the trouble it took to get it made.
Undoubtedly, those troubles have been difficult to keep up with, so here?s a brief recap of what has happened to date: After Michael Fassbender dropped out back in March of last year, director Lynn Ramsay left on the first day of shooting. Joel Edgerton was already cast as another character, but jumped over to Fassbender?s part. Still with us? Thereafter Jude Law came in to take the role Edgerton had vacated, only to exit the film as well, because he only joined in order to work with Ramsay. Bradley Cooper was then brought in to replace him, but guess what? He left less than a month later and has since been replaced by Ewan McGreggor. Oh yeah, and then the producers sued Ramsay.
At the time of writing, however, the film stars Natalie Portman, Noah Emmerich, Ewan Mcgregor, and Joel Edgerton, with Gavin O?Connor in the director?s chair. It tells the story of Jane Hammond, a nice girl married to a gang leader (Emmerich). When Bill turns against his own gang, led by the unruly John Bishop (McGregor) and is severely injured, Jane decides to seek retribution.

At some point, it?s just got to be so big of an embarrassment that everyone involved is like, ?Hey, let?s just call this a write-off and never release this turd of a film, okay?? Which is sort of what the February release is all about. Natalie will give a few interviews in support of it, she might even walk a few red carpets, but she?s hoping we just ignore everything about it.
PS? you know what else got a February 2015 release date? Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow?s Mortdecai. Considering Johnny?s last three films have been spectacular bombs, this is pretty much Hollywood?s version of the ?freeze-out?. Can both Natalie and Depp come back from this? Of course. But it does seem like Hollywood is tired of both of them, right?

I thought Natalie Portman and her family were living in Paris by now, but I guess not. These are photos of Natalie in Jerusalem yesterday, where she?s filming an adaptation of Amos Oz?s A Tale of Love and Darkness. Natalie is not only the star, she?s the director. And she?ll be speaking Hebrew in the film, which is exciting because I didn?t realize she was that fluent in Hebrew (fluent enough to play a Hebrew-speaking character, I mean). But, as with most things, there?s a controversy. Natalie is currently filming in an ultra-orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem and now people are mad:
Oscar-winner Natalie Portman has been accused of mounting a “foreign invasion” by protesters from Israel’s ultra-orthodox community after arriving in Jerusalem to shoot her directorial debut, reports the Times of Israel.
Portman is in the city to work on a film adaptation of Israeli novelist Amos Oz’s acclaimed memoir A Tale of Love and Darkness, which has been translated into 28 languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide. The film details Oz’s childhood in Jerusalem in the chaotic period at the end of the British mandate for Palestine, as well as the writer’s experiences during the early years of the state of Israel and teenage years on a kibbutz. Portman, who was born in Jerusalem to an Israeli father and an American mother, will also take a supporting role as Oz’s mother.
Ultra-orthodox residents of the city’s Nahlaot district have written to Jerusalem deputy mayor Rachel Azaria in protest at the decision to shoot scenes there. “The film shooting is set to take place on several sensitive streets close to synagogues and yeshivas, and the scenes being filmed should have been examined first to make sure they don’t offend anybody’s sensitivities,” the letter reads. It insists authorities failed to inform residents about the shoot, and suggests they only discovered it was happening in recent days.
The Times also reports incidents of ultra-orthodox protest graffiti in the district labelling Portman’s film a “foreign invasion”. Authorities said all actors involved in the shoot for A Tale of Love and Darkness would dress modestly, and pointed out the difficulty of balancing the cultural interests of the city as a whole with those of local religious groups.
“There is a constant tension between the desire to celebrate diverse and interesting Jerusalem and the attempts by extremist groups to prevent this,” Azaria said. “The attraction of the city, its unique architecture and the efforts of the film and television industry will triumph and the cinematic growth we’ve seen in Jerusalem in recent years will continue to flourish with Natalie Portman in Nahlaot.”
Portman, received 1.6m Israeli New Shekel (276,500) from the Jerusalem Development Authority to bring her film to the city. Observers report scenes featuring schoolchildren dressed in traditional 1940s clothing ? wool knee-length shorts for the boys and pinafore dresses for the girls ? have already been shot. Portman, who left Israel for the US at the age of three, will speak Hebrew in the film.

Eh, I?m kind of on Natalie?s side. It seems like she did her due diligence and got all of the permits and such that were required, and it seems like some people in the orthodox community are upset with their representatives more than Natalie. Let her make her movie! Besides, if the mess that went down on Jane Got a Gun is any indication, Natalie will likely have bigger problems than some minor protests by the orthodox community. Jane Got a Gun was Natalie?s last producer-credited film, and it was an utter production disaster.

Testing the waters from the director?s chair, Natalie Portman was busy on the set of ?A Tale of Love and Darkness? in Jerusalem, Israel on Thursday (February 13).
The ?Garden State? gal seemed to be in good spirits as she set up a scene despite the recent controversy over the project.
Apparently the residents of Jerusalem?s Nahlaot district are concerned with Portman?s presence and they wrote a letter to deputy mayor Rachel Azaria in protest.
The letter states, "The film shooting is set to take place on several sensitive streets close to synagogues and yeshivas, and the scenes being filmed should have been examined first to make sure they don't offend anybody's sensitivities."
In response, the deputy mayor declared, "There is a constant tension between the desire to celebrate diverse and interesting Jerusalem and the attempts by extremist groups to prevent this. The attraction of the city, its unique architecture and the efforts of the film and television industry will triumph and the cinematic growth we've seen in Jerusalem in recent years will continue to flourish with Natalie Portman in Nahlaot."

Taking care of her to-do list, Natalie Portman stepped out for some shopping in Beverly Hills on Wednesday afternoon (November 20).
Fresh from her trip to Paris, France, the ?Garden State? starlet had her hands full as she carried several large bags trimmed with tissue paper out to her car.
And Natalie managed to make a dressed-down day look super cute, sporting a green t-shirt layered over a long-sleeved brown top with jeans and brown desert boots.
Meanwhile, it sounds like we?ll be seeing less and less of Natalie over the next year, as she and husband Benjamin Millepied are gearing up to move their son Aleph across the pond.
Portman told Madame Figaro magazine, ?We?re looking for an apartment [in Paris]. Benjamin and I are moving in autumn 2014 when his job at the Paris Opera Ballet starts. It?s obviously a massive change to quit Los Angeles for Paris. I don?t know what my life is going to be like, but I?m so excited. I don?t have the French nationality, but I would be love to get it. But I don?t know if it?s possible because I already have an American and an Israeli passport. Perhaps I should add an h to my name to make it sound more French ? Nathalie??

Here are some new photos of Natalie Portman yesterday in NYC. It looks like her promotional duties for Thor 2 are not over, which surprises me. Natalie and Tom Hiddleston have really done SO much to promote this film while Chris Hemsworth just could not be bothered. Anyway, both of Natalie?s outfits yesterday were Christian Dior, of course. She wore the black-and-white mullet dress to The Late Show with David Letterman, and she wore the ill-fitting slacks and maternity tube top (???) to a Thor 2 screening. I hate all the outfits, but I think the slacks-and-tube-top ensemble is my least favorite.
Natalie also has a new interview with Moviefone to promote Thor. You can read the whole thing here. It?s a lot of Thor, Thor, Thor, blah, but there are a few interesting quotes:
Working with Hiddleston: ?Tom is just so, so awesome. He’s one of the great people to work with. He’s so fun and funny and smart and talented and he’s just phenomenal. And it was so great to slap him because he really let me go for it and always had a cheeky response and punctuated it well.?
Marvel?s feminism: ?I think the Marvel people really know what they’re doing, I have to say. And I think that they’re really creating impressive female characters. I learned about the Bechdel Test soon before shooting, and I was really excited that we have these female characters discussing science with other another, that they’re discussing things that aren’t about a guy. And that’s a great quality. I think that Marvel cares a lot about continuing that.?

I sort of went to sleep when I was reading that, it was not the most exciting interview ever. Blah.

Natalie?s costars were leaving in a steady stream and the original director, Lynne Ramsay, quit the day before the production began. Reportedly, Natalie-as-producer was a mess too ? sources complained about how disorganized she and her team were. Well, now Natalie and the other producers are SUING Lynne Ramsay for walking off the production. Producers allege that Ramsay got a six-figure salary upfront and they want her to pay it back, plus punitive damages for breach of contract. There?s more too ? go here.

Natalie Portman has a new interview with The Telegraph ? you can read the full thing here. I?m pleasantly surprised to see that she?s mixing it up with some new quotes instead of just endlessly rehashing the same ?feminism is not about kung fu? stuff that she?s been saying in all of her other interviews for her Thor promotion. I found the quotes about her Jewish identity fascinating, and I rolled my eyes SO HARD when I came to the quote about her Oscar win. Wait for it.
Love scenes with Chris Hemsworth: ?We would catch each other?s eye in the wrong way; we couldn?t stop laughing and the crew would say, ‘OK enough.??
Playing a scientist: ?Unfortunately, there are still not that many girls going into science, engineering and technology. Jane?s got a mission. She?s looking for something for herself, gravitational anomalies, scientific exploration?. I watched a bunch of physics documentaries, like Physics For Dummies.?
Director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones): ?He is an incredibly bright man. He?d be like, ‘No, that?s a Kantian point of view, not a Hegelian one,? and you?d be like, ‘Wow!??
Being an only child: ?My parents were wonderful. They were completely present, completely loving, they allowed me to do what I was passionate about and I understand now how much they protected me. I think it?s kind of good not to be aware of how ill-equipped you are for the job you have ahead of you,? she says with a laugh, ?or else you wouldn?t try anything. You have to be a bit delusional to try anything creative really, to not understand how high the mountain is before you start climbing it.?
Working in Israel? ?It?s absolutely fascinating. It is the kind of country where you put your finger on a windowsill and you get an interesting story. It?s interesting to be from a place and feel part of a place, but also a stranger in it. I?m definitely a foreigner here. People here would not think of me as an Israeli. The culture I grew up in, the way I look at the world, is American.?
Her sense of Jewish identity: ?The older I get, the more I realize how different it is to be a Jew in a Jewish place as opposed to a Jew in a non-Jewish place. It?s definitely a different feeling in terms of how freely you can be yourself and celebrate your culture and religion. It?s very different being in Israel than in cities that don?t have big Jewish populations, where it can sometimes feel dangerous to be Jewish, and you understand why there is a need for a place where you don?t feel that way. I feel it in lots of places. Pretty much everywhere. New York and LA [where she currently lives] are the exceptions. On holidays in New York the city shuts down. My non-Jewish friends know how to wish you Shanah Tova, Happy New Year in Hebrew. In other places in the world it ranges from people who aren?t familiar with Judaism to people who are hostile towards it.?
Peace in the Middle East: ?Individual friendships happen daily already and have for centuries between people of all backgrounds. The truth is I don?t really understand enough. I?m not a politician. Of course I hope for only the best. I wish that one day it will be quiet for everyone in the region, for men, women, different religions, different ethnicities. Politically, it?s complicated, much more complicated than anyone outside even knows.?

I?m splitting up the photos from last night?s Berlin premiere for Thor 2: The Dark Loki into two posts. This is the Natalie Portman/fashion post. It could have been more interesting except that Elsa Pataky has been NOWHERE. You guys? I sort of miss Elsa. What?s wrong with me? So, in Elsa?s absence, we have Natalie Portman in princess-white Christian Dior Couture.
What is this fabric? Is it really heavy taffeta? I think that?s what it is. I guess I don?t hate the idea of a clean, minimalist, strapless gown in off-white, even though it?s reading more like a fancy-prom dress or, even worse, a debutante?s cotillion gown. Considering what Natalie wore for the London premiere, this is fine. I guess.
Natalie recently gave an interview to The Telegraph about motherhood and feminism. She said:
?I love being a mum. I’m less judgmental than before I had a kid. The biggest thing about parenting is that it is a totally different experience for every person. Everything is cool, there are no rules – I mean, apart from not hurting your kid. Some people breastfeed until their babies are five, and some don’t breastfeed at all. There are no rules about what it means to be a feminist, or a good mother. For some, it’s going to be right to go back to work, for others it’s going to be right to stop working completely.?

Saying that you?re LESS judgmental now that you?re a mom implies that you were totally a judgy bitch before you had a kid. Which is fine. I?m pretty judgy too. I think most people are. But it?s funny that she couldn?t admit it in real time. Maybe it?s something you only realize in retrospect though ? like, she thinks back to how she was several years ago and she can?t believe how much she shaded this person or that group.

I didn?t realize that Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston were going to attend the Thor 2 premiere in Paris last night, so I apologize if today seems a bit oversaturated on Hiddles & Portman. I want to say the next thing with absolutely no sarcasm or judgment or emotion, lest I be accused of ?hating? on a particular actor: Chris Hemsworth did not attend the Paris premiere. He attended the London premiere the night before, and both Natalie and Tommy made it to the Paris premiere but Chris did not.
As for Natalie? she looks worlds better in Paris than she did in London. Remember what she wore for the London premiere? It was AWFUL. She wore Dior in Paris, and this dress is super-cute. It?s Spring 2013 Dior. Her shoes are Charlotte Olympia (leather-free). If I could change one thing? I would do away with her center part. I want to give her a loose, sexy, bedhead look. Also ? it?s still amusing (to me!) that Natalie ended up married to a guy like Benjamin Millepied. He just looks like such a massive dork standing next to her.
I?m adding some bonus photos of Hiddleston at the premiere too. Again, no Chris Hemsworth at the premiere? The hell? Also: I?m becoming sort of bizarrely obsessed with Tommy?s tongue. His tongue comes out whenever he laughs or smiles in a big way. It?s not like he?s going Full Twerky, but once you pay attention to his tongue, you see it everywhere.

Giving their French fans a thrill, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston showed up at the premiere of ?Thor: The Dark World? in Paris last night (October 23).
The ?War Horse? hunk donned a black suit and tie combo as he posed outside Le Grand Rex Theatre with the ?Garden State? gal and several industry bigwigs.
In the flick, Natalie gets to rough up her hunky costars, including Chris Hemsworth, and it turns out she really enjoyed the experience.
"I found it very satisfying. I think it's on behalf of all my girlfriends who had guys that didn't call them back or disappeared or just fell off the face of the earth."
However given Hemsworth?s height advantage, Portman had to come up with creative ways to reach high enough to strike- "There were sort of like secret boxes of ramps or something that they would sneak in there so I could be closer to him, otherwise there would be no way I could hit his face if I tried. I'd be like jumping and trying to reach his cheek."
