As more details begin to emerge, it is now being reported that Paula Abdul demanded a substantial raise, and resigned when she couldn’t get it.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 47-year-old asked for about $20 million to continue with the show, but was only being offered $10 million.
The Times is reporting that she “felt unappreciated” in recent months and especially now after Ryan Seacrest signed a three-year $45 million dollar deal.
Speaking of Seacrest, on his radio show this morning (August 5), of Abdul’s leaving he said, “As far as I know, it’s real. Obviously, she has her reasons for doing it, and if she didn’t feel like she was getting what she needed, then I understand that, too.”

Paula Abdul was making between $2 to $3 million a year for American Idol, but after hearing how big of raise Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell got, $45 million and $100 million, respectively, she got sad and felt she deserved a similar raise.
Early reports say she asked for $20 million. Execs took that to heart, giggled and countered with $10 million. They thought they had a dialogue going and were prepared to hear Paula’s counter of $30 million and was set to tell her that’s not how negotiations work, but her unanticipated goodbye tweet put an end to that. In fact, American Idol took that as her informal resignation, waved goodbye and did that twirly thing with their finger around their ear to signify the end of the lunacy.
We’re told Paula made it especially difficult during the negotiations because she changed management twice.
One person at “Idol” called her reaction “an emotional tweet.” You don’t learn that in law school.
Paula is going to head home today, stare into her cupboard of nearly empty bottles of liquor, look in her wallet, drop to her knees and sob, “What have I done?!” She’ll be back on the show in three weeks. This time for much less than $2 million. She’ll be happy if she even gets paid in expired Vicodins.

There has been widespread speculation as to her future on “American Idol,” and yesterday (August 4) Paula Abdul officially announced her departure from the show.
The 47-year-old entertainer tweeted, “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol. I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon.”
Paula continued, “What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. I do, without any doubt, have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”
A FOX TV rep corroborated the announcement, telling press, “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

In news that will disappoint many fans, Paula Abdul has confirmed that she will not be returning to American Idol. New judge Kara DioGuardi will be on the show next season along with Randy and Simon. It is thought that Idol producers refused to meet Abdul’s salary demands, something that her manager made clear a little over two weeks ago when he said that he had not received a proposal from Idol and that Paula was “hurt,” and “angry” at the snub. He called producers’ lack of an offer “unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful” to Paula, who has been on the show for eight seasons.
Sources tell Fox News’ Pop Tarts that Paula was eventually given a contract, but it must have fallen short of the rumored $20 million she was said to have wanted a year, which would have doubled her salary. Paula tweeted yesterday that she’ll be leaving, and she thanked her fans for their support:
After weeks of speculation surrounding Paula Abdul’s fate as a judge on “American Idol”, it has now been made official ? the former pop princess will not be returning to the hit FOX reality series.
“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to #IDOL. I?ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all I’ll miss being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon,” Abdul wrote on her Twitter page Tuesday night. “What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking.”
According to a source close to the “Opposites Attract” starlet, she was offered a contract by FOX and it was her decision to turn it down.
“Paula is actually handling the situation really well, she is in great spirits,” a close source told Pop Tarts. “She has so many offers and opportunities and has been in New York this week taking meetings.”
Another source said that while the judges had shown the contestants great support through the years it was Abdul who was the one who stayed in closest contact, calling and constantly being there for the finalists as they branched out into the music world.
FOX, FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment released a statement on Tuesday night expressing their sadness over Abdul’s departure.
“Paula Abdul has been an important part of the AMERICAN IDOL family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

Paula is wacky as anything, but she was an important counterbalance to Simon’s nastiness and Randy’s wishy-washy judging. It always seems like Randy is deferring to Simon and doesn’t have a real opinion of his own. Kara comes across as so full of herself and I found it very telling when she got competitive with that bikini girl, insisting on singing the song herself. She has a lot of experience in the industry but the song she wrote for last season’s winner, Kris Allen, got panned and was dropped from the tour. I don’t think she’s a bankable commodity at all. People love Paula because she has a heart and she’s genuine. Idol producers should have thought of the fans instead of letting their business issues with Paula cloud their judgment. The show just won’t be the same without her.

Fox called her bluff: Paula Abdul will not be returning to American Idol. She posted the following on her official Twitter
With sadness in my heart, I?ve decided not to return to IDOL.
I?ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon.
What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me
It truly has been breathtaking… I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all!
I guess leaving Idol isn’t all bad for Paula. Now she can really get a good head start on hoarding buttons and playing dress up with her sixteen cats and hiding in the bushes so she can catch the neighborhood kids ringing her doorbell. Or whatever else it is crazy ladies do when they’re not in production on a hit TV show.

After weeks of speculation, Paula Abdul finally announced her departure from American Idol. Her Coke mug has run dry. Paula, surprisingly lucid, posted on her Twitter:
With sadness in my heart, I?ve decided not to return to #IDOL. I?ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all… I?ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon. What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month.
How will American Idol survive without Paula Abdul’s inane banter and useless critiques? When channel surfing past this show, who will I shake my head at now? Most importantly, who will I watch struggle to form coherent sentences? Randy, Simon, Kara? No way. They’re too sober for that. The only way I’ll relive that experience now is to wait outside of a bar at closing. Still, it’s just not the same. Sigh. At least we’ll always have FOX 13.

Paula Abdul’s role on American Idol is very clear. She’s the crazy one. The one that acts drunk and makes little to no sense 90% of the time. A parrot could give better critique. People get fired from real jobs when they behave like Paula.
American Idol isn’t a real job, however, which is why they’re giving her a raise. Paula is demanding $20 million while AI is thinking around $10 million.
The story behind Sonenberg’s comments, RadarOnline.com has learned from sources close to the situation, is that the former Laker Girl and hit recording star is demanding $20 million and the other side has floated the idea of $10 million. And while Paula has regularly renegotiated her contract with dire threats of not returning, Sonenberg is talking tough and hasn’t given anyone on the network side reason to believe he’s bluffing.
If $20 million sounds like a lot for telling singers whether they suck or not, that’s because it is. When I tell the kindergartners that I mentor that Hellen Keller could sing better than them, all I get is crying, kicks to the shin and questions about who Hellen Keller is. What a bunch of retards. Judge's rep says he has not received an offer to renew her contract.By Eric Ditzian

In a June appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman," "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul said she was unsure whether she'd return to "Idol" now that her contract was up, but ultimately joked that such statements were simply a business strategy.
"It's called 'negotiating,' " she told the late-night host.
So what is it called when your manager tells a news outlet that you may not return to the talent competition? That's what Abdul's manager, David Sonenberg, did when he spoke with the Los Angeles Times Idol Tracker blog.
"Very sadly, it does not appear that she's going to be back on 'Idol,' " he said, revealing that he doesn't have an offer from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the show's production companies.
"I find it, under these circumstances, particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful," Sonenberg continued. "I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven't stepped up and said what they want to do."
Sonenberg has only been managing Abdul since the end of June. He told Idol Tracker that he has "reached out to the head of business affairs at 19" and informed Fox that "Paula would love to be on the show." He said Fox informed him that he would soon hear from them, but that he has "not received any proposal whatsoever."
Last week it was announced that "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest had signed a three-year, $45 million deal to return to the show. Judge Simon Cowell's contract expires next year, and early reports have suggested he might be offered upwards of $144 million to continue on the show. Newest judge Kara DioGuardi signed a one-year contract for her inaugural season in 2009, but has not yet completed a deal to return.
"Everyone's going to be back," Cowell claimed recently. "Absolutely."
And shortly after signing his contract, Seacrest seconded that assessment. "Lots of conversations going on behind the scenes but I fully expect you will see the whole team next year," he wrote on his Twitter account.

Although auditions for the ninth season of American Idol start August 6, long-time judge Paula Abdul doesn’t even have a contract proposal from the show’s production companies yet. Maybe they just didn’t offer it in pill form. According to the LA Times
“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on ‘Idol,’” [said] David Sonenberg, Abdul’s manager.
“I think unnecessarily hurtful,” he said of the contract holdup. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do. I reached out to the head of business affairs at FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment and told Fox that Paula would love to be on the show, [but] I have not received any proposal whatsoever.”
Representatives for Fremantle, 19 and Fox all separately declined to comment.
“She’s not a happy camper as a result of what’s going on. She’s hurt. She’s angry,” Sonenberg said. “I think at this point we’re going to be considering everything, including some kind of a competition show. She has tremendous ideas for a whole variety of shows.”
Boy, that “American Idol” is gonna rue the day, I tell you. Rue the day. Because where are they gonna find another judge who finds every contestant “stayed true to who they are” and “amazing” and “a breath of fresh air?” American Idol just shot itself in the foot. Well, metaphorically, of course. Not like that time Paula shot herself in the foot because she thought it was a musk rat. That’s just a unfortunate coincidence.

Paula Abdul’s manager has made it crystal clear that American Idol producers aren’t offering his client a new contract to remain on American Idol, and that it’s likely she’ll step away from the hit show. Last week we heard that emcee Ryan Seacrest signed a three year, $45 million contract with Idol that doesn’t prevent him from producing his own reality shows on the side. The National Enquirer reported that Paula Abdul was hoping to score $20 million a year, or double her salary, to retain her seat on the judges’ panel. According to Paula’s manager, she hasn’t even been fielded a contract continuing her current pay. Does this mean Paula is off and will self righteous new edition Kara DioGuardi remain on the show? Whatever happens, “yo Dog” Randy Jackson will stay until 2011, and Simon is sure to remain too.
Paula Abdul is unhappy. And unless the producers of “American Idol” change her frown to a smile soon, she’ll dance like there’s no tomorrow away from TV’s No. 1 show.
“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on ‘Idol,’ ” David Sonenberg, Abdul’s manager, told The Times when contacted about the judge’s contract negotiations.
With auditions for the ninth season due to start Aug. 6, Sonenberg says he doesn’t even have a proposal for a new contract from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the production companies behind the show. The new season is scheduled to premiere in January.
“I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful,” he said of the contract holdup. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.”
Sonenberg began managing Abdul at the end of June, he said. According to him, he has “reached out to the head of business affairs at 19? and told Fox that “Paula would love to be on the show.” He said Fox told him he would hear from them, but “I have not received any proposal whatsoever…|
Meanwhile, Cowell has a contract that expires next year and is jockeying for his own rich new payday. Published reports have floated a mind-blowing figure of $144 million, which Cowell has scoffed at, saying that talks are ongoing. (Fellow judge Randy Jackson is booked through 2011.)
But the situation is more complicated for Abdul. Last season, the producers added a fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi. Producers have not announced a deal with DioGuardi either, but the speculation is that her presence at the judging table may have been a shrewd move to tamp down any outsize contract demands that Abdul and her team might make. For their parts, both DioGuardi and Abdul have said recently that they want to return to the show. (DioGuardi’s publicist did not respond to a request for comment.)
But in Abdul’s case, that seems dependent on getting the right dollar amount. Sonenberg has said his client has not been well-compensated in the past.
She’s already looking toward an “Idol”-less future, he says, though Abdul’s foray into non-”Idol” programming, the 2007 Bravo show “Hey Paula,” was not a success.
“She’s not a happy camper as a result of what’s going on. She’s hurt. She’s angry,” Sonenberg said. “I think at this point we’re going to be considering everything, including some kind of a competition show. She has tremendous ideas for a whole variety of shows.”
[From LA Times]
Is it really that bad for Paula or is her new manager just playing hardball in an attempt to get more money for his client? I don’t agree that anyone merits that kind of astronomical sum, but if Ryan can earn $15 million a year it only seems fair that they offer something comparable for Paula. She probably pissed off her bosses royally when she told the press that producers deliberately let her stalker audition for Idol even after she warned them and pleaded that they not let her on. The stalker, Paula Goodspeed, followed Paula home after an Idol audition and eventually committed suicide by overdosing in her car outside Paula’s house last November.
Paula is definitely loopy on camera, but the fans and contestants love her. The show needs her wacky, encouraging presence as a counterbalance to mean Simon and boring Randy. It would be a real shame to let her go. The producers have been trying to give Paula the shaft for a while, but they should listen to the fans and realize that Paula is an integral part of the show, much more so than Ryan.
