My nemesis Laura Dern returned to the Jurassic Park franchise for Jurassic World Dominion. Dern has played the same ?scientist? character, Dr. Ellie Sattler, in the first and third films. I don?t have much of a problem with the character, although y?all know Dern plucks my last nerve. Still, I?m fine with Dern or any actress playing a scientist. Ellie Sattler was a woman in STEM before we understood the importance of women in STEM. What?s funny about that is that Dern thinks it?s important to emphasize that Dr. Sattler is not a ?sexy scientist trope? and as such, she didn?t wear makeup.
Dern said she personally ?never imagined returning? to play Dr. Ellie Sattler one more time. But if her character was going to come back, she wanted her to be an ?evolved scientist? and ?true to who she was, which is being fearless yet vulnerable.?
?Her activism and feminism as a scientist was really important to me. I spoke with Steven and Colin, and we all wanted her to return with a new sense of self and advanced in her life and her work,? said Dern. ?She?s not some sexy-scientist trope. I didn?t wear makeup in this movie. She?s real. She?s divorced, but loving life, and independent. She?s raised kids. And she?s at the height of her career, and she?s using it as service to the world. She?s really a modern, feminist female action hero, and that?s a beautiful message.?

The thing is, I didn?t think the character was a ?sexy scientist trope? in Jurassic Park? Dern looked like a normal woman, she wore ugly-but-comfortable shorts throughout the whole movie and she was never in a face full of makeup or anything. And even if Dern had worn makeup in Dominion which she did that isn?t some indicator of someone?s feminism for God?s sake. Feminists wear makeup. Plenty of scientists wear makeup. ?Wearing makeup? does not nullify someone?s feminism or their scientific mind. And she was plainly lying about not wearing makeup. Which Dern does a lot. Which is one of the reasons why she?s my nemesis.

I haven?t seen any of the recent Jurassic Park movies, am I missing anything? I remember the sequel with Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore. There was another one with Sam Neill too? At some point, they rebooted the series with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and I remember the criticism that the writers/producers made Bryce?s character a caricature of a nagging, know-nothing B. But yeah, I?ve skipped out. I?ll skip out on this new one too, Jurassic World Dominion. They?ve brought the original cast members Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, Laura Dern together with the new cast members, Pratt and Howard. Last night was the big premiere in LA for the film. The cast was in Europe last week, doing smaller screenings and photocalls to hype the film, but this seemed to be the big ?world premiere.?
We?ve always talked about Bryce?s fashion and styling with the caveat that Bryce has to buy most of the clothes she wears at red-carpet events. While she looks like she?s about a size 8/10 (in America sizing) to me, designers only ?lend out? size zero or size two stuff. So she?s not getting freebies and she rarely gets to borrow stuff. Which means she buys her clothes and chooses the clothes herself, to sometimes awful results. She?s going through a fashion phase where she?s all about chest cut-outs and I don?t really get it. This Alex Perry dress isn?t great, but it?s far from the worst thing Bryce has ever worn. Her bangs trauma situation has slightly improved too, right?
Meanwhile, my nemesis Laura Dern looked awful in this Prada ensemble. Reader, I laughed. I always get questions about why Dern is my nemesis. First of all, everyone needs a celebrity nemesis, some BEC who annoys you for no specific reason. I hate her because she?s tall. I hate her because she?s not as talented as people say. I hate her because her style sucks. It brings me such joy that Prada gave her this shiny, cheap, ugly outfit.

Laura Dern has had some doozies when it comes to her fashion. She doesnt take calculated fashion risks that pay off sometimes, nor does she always wear fug looks. She skirts that line between decent and fug looks which arent even fun. Last night she was in an Oscar de la Renta gown which was just like a too-long black turtleneck paired with a full feather skirt. It was bad, her presenting was tiresome, and her styling was off. It looked like she got her hair curled and set without a brush through. Theres no rhyme or reason to her look but thats often the case.
Laura hit the red carpet with her buddy Reese Witherspoon and they were super annoying when they were interviewed on ABC ahead of the ceremony. I completely agree with this comment on Twitter that those two are Absolutely the two girls who tell you the night before prom that they totally forgot to tell you there?s no more room in the limo. Reeses presenting was also a bit cloying. She did the animation categories. Reese was in Dior, in a crimson chiffon gown with a magenta accent. This is a rather classic gown and it needed a little something, but I dont think the belt is right for it at all. It looks like an afterthought.
Olivia Colman was in London and she was also in Christian Dior. This didnt occur to me until Anthony Hopkins accepted his award later, but it was super early in the morning in London! They must have been completely exhausted over there. Theyre six hours ahead of EST so they ended at 5:30 in the morning. This gown is a bit frumpy but I like the clean belt and I also think that Olivia elevates anything she wears. Her husband is really cute and they were cute together on screen.

Were doing some Vanity Fair Oscar party photos but well have more for you tomorrow too. It was a long night for us. Laura Dern isnt always a miss on the red carpet, which is why it was disappointing to see her in that Armani boob-tassel number with very dated styling. The dangling parts kept moving during her acceptance speech and it was distracting. She let her hair down for the VF Oscar Party and it looked so much nicer. You could tell she had extensions, they reminded me of her characters hair in Marriage Story, but they looked just full and not fake. Laura wore a 1017 ALYX 9SM blazer (thanks JJ for that ID) over a t-front black dress. This is a decent party look, and its not like she could have worn this for the ceremony. I wanted to see more from her. Oh and she carried her Oscar! I would bring that thing with me to all the parties too.

All of my voodoo worked! I?m so happy that after My Nemesis, Laura Dern, swept all of the major awards this season, she now has to look at herself in photos forever where she?s wearing this dreadful boob-tasseled Armani gown. Laura Dern has access to the best designers and she seems ?well liked? by fashion people? and this was the best she could come up with? I love it. I love how bad it is. I was rooting for this and thank you to all of the people who were like ?hahaha, your nemesis?s dress is so bad!? This is why prayer circles and voodoo dolls work, people. Not only is the dress kind of terrible, but her styling sucked too that hair!! It was a 1950s helmet.
The other actress winner, Renee Zellweger, ended up in Armani too, which surprises me for many reasons. Usually, Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress are not wearing the same designer. And Renee, more so than Laura, has access to the best from all the major designers. And she went with Armani? and not Prada, Dior, Chanel, Carolina Herrera, etc. Now, that being said, My Nemesis was probably pissed off at how Renee got the ?good? Armani. Renee?s gown is FAR superior.
Also, even though I?ve been calling Laura my nemesis this whole awards season, it turned out that Renee annoyed me so much more than Dern last night. WTF was happening in Renee?s speech? Go back and rewatch this and how bonkers it is when she just goes off the rails in minute three of her rambling.

Its strange how different trends come up on specific red carpets. Do you remember how the big trend was Pink and red just a couple of months ago? Last night at the Critics Choice Awards it was definitely bright yellow and orange. So many women looked like highlighters. There were some lovely bright dresses, it was just an unexpected color choice and different from the canary yellow which was inexplicably popular a while ago.
First off is winner Laura Dern in Emilia Wickstead. This was one of my favorite bright dresses in that its very flattering, it highlights her great figure and it looks classic and comfortable. Her hair is a bit undone for me, but overall its a great look. I really like the T back, which you could see on camera. Laura won for Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story and it looks like shes the contender to beat now. Shes been nominated for two Oscars but doesnt have one yet. Well find out today if she gets a third nom.
Kristen Bell was in a Cong Tri jumpsuit. She won the See Her award, which was invented by ad agencies to highlight women in acting. The intro focused on the need to recognize diversity and different body types and then Kristen won, which was weird. I thought this jumpsuit was just ok. I like how silky and flowy it is and it definitely stood out but the color seems off to me.
Awkwafina was in an empire waist Elie Saab gown with a built-in cape. This is quite girlie for her, she often wears suits and more eclectic outfits, and I really like it. Fingers crossed that she gets nominated today!
Rachel Brosnahan was in Carolina Herrera. I wasnt a big fan of the dress. Those bell-type skirts are bizarre and the sequins on this bring the eye to that area, but I love her styling. That long braid with the silver string around it is so pretty.

As you know, Kaiser calls Laura Dern her nemesis. If you want to know more about that, we talked about it on our podcast on episode #37 and this link is queued up to that part. She says Laura Dern overacts and that she rubs her the wrong way. Ive always found Dern harmless, but I used to like her more and am now noticing the things that Kaiser mentions! Plus Enlightened was hard to take and I didnt watch Big Little Lies. Dern won best supporting actress for Marriage Story last night, which could mean that shes going to get an Oscar. Shes been nominated twice before. Laura Dern might get an Oscar before Amy Adams. She was in Saint Laurent and I thought this look was a mess and her hair was awful, but Kaiser actually liked it! Go figure. It does look better in photos than it did on camera and I see the appeal of it now. I think her styling was throwing me off.
Leslie Bibb was in a tiered ruffle sequin gown by Honor. If you look at the bottom you can see that its actually ombre. I don?t think tiered ruffles ever work on dresses and there?s just too much going on with this and her face says it all.

Laura Dern was on Ellen promoting Marriage Story and Little Women, both of which are out later this year. She?s prolific lately and that seems to be by design as her children are teenagers now and she must have more freedom. On Ellen she talked about the fact that she gained some cred with her kids when Kanye West wore a t-shirt with her face on it! She also discussed working with Meryl Streep and how cool it was for you that she got to introduce Meryl to her mom, actress Diane Ladd. (I didn?t excerpt that part, you can watch that here.)
On the popularity of her BLL character
It is odd to me in playing a lot of interesting characters that it would be Renata that is in fact most relatable to many people. I?ve never had so many people come up and quote that line. They come up, often sort of screaming in my face ?I will not not be rich!? What I love about Renata is that she will say everything she feels and there is something delicious about getting to live that out.

That is amazing for a whole other reason. This is thanks to the amazing designer Raff Simmons who paid homage to David Lynch in his work. What he didn?t know is he gave me a tiny bit of cred in my household of teenagers and I?m really grateful. If any rapper comes on this show and you want to hand them a shirt with my face on it I really appreciate it. It?s really working for me. Every mother should get this opportunity when their kid is 15.
It sounds horrible to have kids. What do you have to be to be a cool mom? You?re Laura Dern.
On Marriage Story and playing a divorce attorney
There were a few inspiring divorce lawyers who were very generous and let us mine their experience and their business. It is a very fractured business. People can lose their kid?s college education very quickly instead of just trying to figure it out themselves.

I?ve heard from other celebrities that their kids are not impressed by their careers or success at all but that they like the fact that they know other celebrities and have clout with them. (I talked about it in this story about Gwen Stefani!) As the mother of a 15-year-old, I can relate to this so much. I mean I run a celebrity gossip blog! That should get me more points than it does. I know most of the memes and all the celebrity stories as they happen, but I?m still embarrassing. My kid does like to tell girls in his class what I do for a living, so I should take that as a compliment.
As for Laura?s comments about divorcing, this is so true. I saw so many friends pay more money to divorce lawyers than in settlements to exes. When I was going through a divorce I consulted a few lawyers trying to figure out how to approach it. After hearing a lot of legal horror stories, I decided to just wait it out until we were able to do it on our own and agree on everything. It took a lot of work but it didn?t cost a fortune and we?re still friendly. My ex told me recently that he brags to people how easy his divorce was!

I know it didn?t get great reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to Jurassic World which came out last summer. It had giant dinosaurs, lots of bad guys getting eaten (spoilers), a giant mansion being destroyed, and plenty of action. I love a stupid action movie as long as it doesn?t take itself too seriously. I?m not convinced Chris Pratt is a suitable action star, but that?s another issue. I thought Fallen Kingdom delivered, but my friends didnt like it as much as I did. Theres casting news for the third Jurassic World, which is coming out in 2021. The scientists featured in the original 1993 movie (and the forgettable sequels), Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum, will return! Goldblum did have a cameo in Fallen Kingdom but it may have just been a setup for this third film. In this one, all three scientists will have major roles according to director Colin Trevorrow.
For Jurassic World 3, Universal Pictures will bring back original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum to star alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, sources said. Colin Trevorrow is back to direct and production starts early next year.
Dern moments ago revealed her participation in the film, as well as Neill?s and Goldblum?s returns, at a fan screening tonight of Battle at Big Rock, an eight-minute short film that Trevorrow directed and showed tonight, featuring dinosaurs running amuck after they?ve escaped to the real world. The last Jurassic World, directed by J.A. Bayona, ended with the revived beasts finding their way off the island and into civilization, so it might well be where the next installment of the film goes.

I was just trying to remember what Ive seen Sam Neill in recently and it was the excellent Taika Waititi-created film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which was hilarious and heartwarming. It costarred a teen actor from New Zealand named Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2). Its on Hulu if youre looking for something to watch this weekend! Getting back to this news, Im going to see this in theaters definitely and Im excited that Laura Dern and Sam Neill are coming back! I got to rewatch Jurassic Park several times over the past couple of years as my son discovered it and loved it. The two sequels to the original, which came out in 1997 and 2001, are not good. Maybe people will say the same about these but Ill still see them! Then again, I loved The Meg, Skyscraper and Rampage.

We can cross Laura Dern off the Who Will Bradley Cooper Hook Up With white board list. Laura and Bradley were photographed having lunch together earlier this summer and people really wanted to make them a thing. Everybody knew they weren?t, but news was slow, so we had a lot of time to pair random people together. Even though the oddsmakers had already dropped DeCoop from the books, Laura felt compelled to officially go on the record to dismiss the rumors. At an event this past weekend, Laura confessed she does love Bradley dearly, but just as a friend.
Just friends. Laura Dern opened up about her relationship with Bradley Cooper and how the pair are close ? in a platonic way.
?We?re amazing friends. We?re so lucky. And we?re family,? Dern, 52, told Us Weekly exclusively at L.A. Loves Alex?s Lemonade culinary event in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 14.
After photos circulated of the Big Little Lies star and Cooper, 44, eating lunch together in New York City in June, speculation arose that they could be dating. Dern doesn?t blame people for their interest in Cooper?s love life because she knows people are going to be curious.
?I mean, everybody?s always gonna comment about whatever seems intriguing, and he?s the greatest human, and one of my best friends in the world. So I don?t blame anyone for having deep curiosity about his life cause he?s spectacular,? Dern said.

Aha! So it?s? just as we all suspected. Ah well. I actually really like Laura?s response. Instead of calling the media silly, she uses the speculation to compliment Bradley, that?s very sweet. He should date her. He should date somebody, for heaven?s sake, because it?s been three and a half whole months since he split with the mother of his child. Surely this gap in his relationships will end his life. Good lord, let the poor man (and the women helping him through his breakup) be.
But since we are determined to link BCoop up, let?s return to the white board. You know who has not denied dating him? Anna Wintour. Well, well, well ? isn?t that telling. No, it?s not. He?s not dating Anna. And he is most certainly not dating Angelina Jolie, even though Kate Hudson?s at Pajiba argument that we should consider it is my favorite piece of Romance Journalism ever. I know odds are on Jennifer Garner but I think she?s still loved up with her ?true partner, John Miller. No, poor Bradly is just going to have to stand next to another woman in public so he can be fictionally romantically linked for an afternoon. And then she can deny it, like Laura, and send us all back to the white board.
