Here are some photos of humanist-not-feminist Meryl Streep and feminist Carey Mulligan at the London Film Festival photocall for Suffragette today. Um? I guess Carey gave birth to her baby and didn?t tell anyone? Because she was heavily pregnant a few months ago and I guess I sort of believed that she was still pregnant because we hadn?t heard anything about anything. Carey is a very, very private celebrity and she barely even mentions her husband or their life together. I wasn?t expecting the first baby photos in People Magazine or Hello, that?s what I?m saying. But I did think that there would be some kind of statement at some point, like ?Carey Mulligan welcomed a healthy baby. No more details will be released.? So that?s a little bit weird.
Anyway, we?re still talking about the Suffragette t-shirts reading ?I?d rather be a rebel than a slave.? The whole thing has created a huge war online, especially on Twitter. Personally, I don?t think Meryl and Carey are the ones who should take the heat for it ? the PR people should have known better and someone, somewhere down the line should have said, ?Huh, maybe this quote is sort of problematic taken as a stand-alone, out-of-context statement to promote a movie.? Meanwhile, Time Out London tried to fall on their sword, releasing this statement:
For a recent photoshoot to document Suffragette, the first feature film to tell the story of the violent and historic struggle of women in the UK for equal rights including the right to vote, Time Out London invited the lead actresses from Suffragette to wear t-shirts with the slogan: ?I?d rather be a rebel than a slave.?
This is a quote from a 1913 speech given by Emmeline Pankhurst, one of the historic British suffragettes whose fight for equality is portrayed in the movie. The original quote was intended to rouse women to stand up against oppression ? it is a rallying cry, and absolutely not intended to criticize those who have no choice but to submit to oppression, or to reference the Confederacy, as some people who saw the quote and photo out of context have surmised.
Pankhurst?s full quote was: ?I know that women, once convinced that they are doing what is right, that their rebellion is just, will go on, no matter what the difficulties, no matter what the dangers, so long as there is a woman alive to hold up the flag of rebellion. I would rather be a rebel than a slave.?
Time Out published the original feature online and in print in the UK a week ago. The context of the photoshoot and the feature were absolutely clear to readers who read the piece. It has been read by at least half a million people in the UK and we have received no complaints.
[From ET Canada]
I have a problem with Time Out London?s statement, specifically the last part: ?The context of the photoshoot and the feature were absolutely clear to readers who read the piece.? Yes, that?s just the point. You have to understand the context of the quote, which is why the t-shirts were a bad idea. ?It has been read by at least half a million people in the UK and we have received no complaints.? Well thank God the film is only going to be released in the UK and no one is putting any money into releasing the film worldwide, plus spending the cash for an awards season campaign in America, right? Incidentally, all of those people complaining on Twitter? Those ?count? as complaints.

| Carey Mulligan: 'The idea that women are inherently weak is mad' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

The November issue of Elle UK is The Feminism Issue. So they put a grim-looking Carey Mulligan, the star of this year?s Oscar-bait film Suffragette, on the cover. In a baggy pantsuit. Because feminism. Actually, I bet the editorial is so baggy and pantsuit-tastic because Carey was heavily pregnant during the shoot and she didn?t want to do a bump-conscious editorial. Anyway, the reason Carey and Meryl Streep are saying words about feminism these days is because they are going to try to make Suffragette a big awards-contender. Many believe Carey will get another Oscar nomination too. So, obviously, Elle UK asked her about feminism and such. Some highlights:
The ?strong woman? label: ?You don?t say to men, ?You played another really strong man?. The idea that women are inherently weak and we?ve identified the few strong ones to tell stories about?is mad. A lot of the stuff I read is playing so-and-so?s wife, so-and-so?s girlfriend. That?s not where the story is: I want to play him.?
She?s not sure she would have been a suffragette back in the day: ?You’d like to think that you would [but] you’re a product of your time. I can express my opinion, but I’ve never had to fight, to stand up for anything. And the notion of walking into a gallery with a knife and destroying a piece of art, that seems unbelievably terrifying to me. And that’s just one, tame example of what they did.?
Whether the world should be run by women: ?Someone asked me yesterday, ‘Do you think it would be a better world if it were run by women?’ And the answer is no, I think it would be a better world if it were run equally ? we’re still so far from that.?
Her impending motherhood: ?I’ve always wanted to be a mother. I love what I do, but I’m excited for this next phase of my life.?
Playing Daisy in The Great Gatsby: ?Playing Daisy was the first time I felt physically intimidated by a role, I remember reading horrendous sh** [online] when I got cast, people saying, ?She’s not pretty enough to play Daisy.? I felt so embarrassed. I thought, ?They’re right, I shouldn’t do it? ? all those mad insecurities that you have.’
[From The Daily Mail]
I?m interested in seeing Suffragette just because I don?t know a lot about the history of the movement in Britain and America. It will be interesting to see a historical drama specifically about the women?s movement, because that rarely happens. In Hollywood, history is only about dude stories. As for Carey not wanting the world to be run by women as much as she wants equality? sure. I get that.

It?s no secret that celebrity pregnancy rumors are a dime a dozen, but several sources are now reporting that Carey Mulligan and her husband Marcus Mumford are expecting!
The ?Inside Llewyn Davis? actress showed up at Sunday night?s (June 7) Tony Awards wearing a maroon dress that definitely looked to be smuggling her growing baby bump, and an inside source told Us Weekly that there?s definitely a bun in the Mulligan oven.
"They weren't planning on announcing, but she hasn't stopped working. Everybody around her is being very supportive. [Her Broadway gig ?Skylight?] ends soon and they're going back to England after," said the snitch.

Star Magazine says Carey Mulligan is preggo. Well, a lot of you predicted this. I threw it out there as a possibility last week, although at the end of the day, I just thought Carey Mulligan loved baggy, sacky dresses. But some of you insisted that Carey was trying to hide a small baby bump, and now Star Magazine says you guys were right.
The ?I Will Wait? song is sounding on cue for Mumford & Sons singer Marcus Mumford, 28, and wife Carey Mulligan, 29. A source tells Star the couple is expecting a new bundle of joy.
?Carey and Marcus are thrilled to welcome their first child,? an insider tells Star.
But they aren?t planning on sharing the news for several more weeks.
?The thing with these two is that they are extremely private people,? the insider explains. Plus, they?re waiting until her pregnancy starts to show, the source adds.
The Mumford couple had been trying for a baby, but the good news still ?took them by surprise,? the source told Star.
[From Star Magazine]
If it?s true ? and I kind of think it is ? then congrats to them. I don?t see Carey as one of those annoying ?let me pontificate about how motherhood is the only important thing? moms. She won?t be doing pap strolls with the bump or the baby. Although it will get interesting later this year when she?s promoting Suffragette, a film that many believe will be a potential Oscar contender. Will she shill her bump a little bit for an Oscar? We?ll see.
You know what this reminded me of? We have barely heard anything about or from Keira Knightley. She must be due any day now too (like Sophie Hunter). Keira and Carey are good friends. They?re not, like, pregnancy twinsies or anything, but I would imagine that Carey and Keira?s babies will grow up together.
This was the terrible Dior dress that launched a thousand baby-bump rumors:

| Carey Mulligan hates body-con clothes: 'I?m too self-conscious of my body' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos from last night?s NYC premiere of Far From the Madding Crowd. Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen and Matthias Schoenaerts were in attendance. Matthias is such a hottie, right? I mean? we need to include him on our list of dudes-to-watch. Michael Sheen was there with his girlfriend (still!) Sarah Silverman, which? even though it?s been a few years, I still think they?re such a weird couple.
As for Carey, she wore this lovely, simple Lavin gown in a rich navy. The pearl necklace is Lanvin as well ? I get the idea of wearing a long statement necklace with this simple gown, but I think this pearl thing is too much. In any case, this look is SO MUCH better than the baggy Dior mess she wore to the London premiere ? remember that? It was so baggy and unflattering that many people theorized that she was knocked up. But Carey told Hello Magazine that ?baggy and unflattering? is just her style, that she hates body-con.
Carey Mulligan is too ”self-conscious” to wear figure-hugging clothing. The ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ star has confessed she prefers to sport loose-fitting dresses on the red carpet as she feels uncomfortable when she shows off too much of her slender physique.
She said: ”I’m so reserved. I like outfits that come to my knee and aren’t too tight or revealing. I’m too self-conscious of my body and my appearance.”
The brunette beauty, 29 – who is married to Mumford and Sons star Marcus Mumford – added she hates having her picture taken at high profile events, although she feels as if she has ”improved a little” when it comes to posing in front of the camera. She told HELLO! magazine: ”I hate the idea of standing in front of a hundreds of people while they take my picture. It’s a nightmare and I feel so uncomfortable. Maybe I’ve improved a little, but any time I’m on the red carpet I lose all sense of myself. I find it so odd. I know it sounds like a contradiction but I never went into acting for all eyes on me.”
[From Contact Music]
I get that? sort of. I mean, not every woman can or should wear tight little minidresses and four-inch heels. How boring would that be? But I think there?s a flattering way to do the anti-body stuff. And that Dior dress wasn?t the way. This Lanvin though? It?s nice.
Oh, and Carey gave a few decent quotes to USA Today last night ? she was asked about being on Broadway (in Skylight) and she said: ?What is fun? I can?t remember fun. I basically just go to restaurants with friends and go for walks. I don?t have any real hobbies. I like being home.? She also threw a little shade on the celebrities complaining about their lack of privacy, saying that she?s always maintained her privacy because ?It?s easy to do if you are intentioned about it. I?ve always been intentioned about it.?
Last thing: Carey was just nominated for a Tony Award for Skylight! Congrats.

Her new movie ?Far From the Madding Crowd? hits theaters on May 1st, and Carey Mulligan is featured on the front of the May 2015 issue of Vogue magazine.
Though she?s won a slew of awards, the ?Inside Llewyn Davis? actress tries to fly below the radar as much as possible- ?I have always felt that the less people know about me, the better. The more similar you look job to job, the more they relate to you from your previous roles. That?s why I?ve done loads of really stupid things to my hair in the past to try to not look the same.?
When it comes to making time for her husband, Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford, Mulligan shares, ?Like anyone, you try and split your time evenly? Marcus is the only thing that?s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to.?
And it sounds like Sienna Miller is a big fan of both Carey and Marcus- ?They both come from very solid families and have a real sense of the life they want to live? They have chickens and a dog, and roasts and friends, jams by campfires. It?s sort of idyllic. Marcus can headline Glastonbury and Carey can be nominated for however many Oscars, and then they come back to their farm, and they?re in big woolly jumpers and funny hats, raising piglets. It?s an amazing balance they?ve managed to strike. I can?t wait for a little baby to come along.?

| Carey Mulligan in Dior at the 'Madding Crowd' premiere: lovely or unflattering' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I haven?t written about Carey Mulligan since 2013. How in the world did that happen? Carey is arguably one of the greatest actresses of her generation. I have every hope/belief that she will follow in the footsteps of actresses like Emma Thompson (an early mentor for Carey), Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep (one of Carey?s recent costars). Carey flies undercover for the most part ? we really don?t know anything about her marriage to Marcus Mumford, they don?t walk red carpets together and her personal life is largely one big question mark.
Carey is currently starring in Skylight, the David Hare play she starred in with much acclaim in London last year. They brought it to Broadway this year and once again, the play (and Carey in particular) was received with acclaim. I?m guessing that everyone involved with pick up Tony Award nominations later this month.
During a week off, Carey flew to London for the big premiere of her new film, the film adaptation of Thomas Hardy?s Far From the Madding Crowd. Carey plays the lead, Bathsheba Everdeen, and Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts and Tom Sturridge are all trying to woe her, with mixed results (I?m including the trailer below).
While I think Carey looks beautiful in that special Audrey Hepburn-esque way she has, I?m not really crazy about her Dior Haute Couture dress. I think the idea of it was on-target ? go for something with a simple cut that sparkled ? but the execution makes this a failure. It doesn?t fit her properly, it makes her look pregnant, and the lace detail at the hem is tacky and cheap-looking. Carey posed happily with costar Matthias Schoenaerts, who is? a hottie. Damn.
Here?s the trailer. I?ll admit it: this looks like the kind of tearjerker-romance that I would watch many, many times.

Kicking off her brand new project, Carey Mulligan showed up in London, England today (February 24) to film ?Suffragette.?
The ?Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps? starlet looked a bit drab in a black beret, black wool coat and fingerless gloves as she got into character as iconic political activist Emmeline Pankhurst.
Also starring Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson, ?Suffragette? is currently slated for release in 2015.
Per the synopsis, ?This is the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State.?

| Carey Mulligan Talks Drunk Cell Phone Video Audition for 'Inside Llewyn Davis' | Added 10 years ago | Source: Celebrity Gossip |

She has an impressive body of work and plenty of Tinseltown credibility, so when it came time to audition for ?Inside Llewyn Davis,? Carey Mulligan was admittedly a little too lax.
During her interview on ?The Graham Norton Show,? the ?Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps? babe confessed she was a little tipsy when she made a video to send to the studio on her mobile phone.
?I was so excited so I did the audition after a dinner where I had had a few drinks. My American accent is better after a few drinks and then I decided to eat something - it works for Brad Pitt, who eats all the time in films. It was a really drunk audition. Thank God, I didn't send it.?
Carey also recalled her audition for ?The Great Gatsby?- ?It was daunting. It was really scary. Daisy has to kiss Gatsby but you don't just kiss Leonardo DiCaprio. We were halfway through the scene and I was close to his face but had to ask the director if I should kiss him. He said yes, so I just did it and I got the job. That's how you get a job.?

| Carey Mulligan's little black dress at NYFF premiere of 'Llewyn Davis?: cute or fug' | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos from the NY Film Festival premiere of the Coen Brothers? Inside Lleywn Davis. This film already premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, but now they?re gearing up for the wide release of the film, so plan on seeing more of Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac and Garrett Hedlund. Unfortunately for all, Oscar Isaac was not at the premiere this weekend ? he?s THE STAR too. Carey and Garrett are just supporting players.
Anyway, Carey wore this cute little black dress with some kind of built-in gilded choker. You know who could have pulled this off? Naomi Campbell. In fact, I?m pretty cute Naomi has at least five versions of this dress. On Carey, it does look a little bit like someone forced her to wear it ? she?s slouching and she just looks uncomfortable with exposing that sliver of skin at her waist. But I do love her newly brunette hair ? she?s gone back and forth between blonde and brunette throughout her career, and she?s one of those rare people who looks good as both, I think.
I?m also including photos of Carey?s husband Marcus Mumford (of Mumford and Sons) and Garrett Hedlund. Surprisingly, Garrett looked very pulled together, handsome and clean at this event (usually he looks like he just rolled out of bed at his commune). His hair flip made me chuckle. Also: I really do think he and Kiki Dunst are on the rocks. But we?ll see. Kirsten wasn?t there to support him, which is weird because she usually comes out to support him.
