| Michelle Williams goes fragile, weepy and 'sexy' for GQ, talks about Heath Ledger | Added 13 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Isn?t this surprising? Out of all of the younger actresses currently working today, Michelle Williams is the one I?d least expect to see in her panties on the cover of GQ. She just doesn?t seem like that kind of actress, does she? Meaning, she seems to actively avoid putting herself out there as ?sexy?. Sure, she?s selling My Week With Marilyn, in which she plays one of the most iconic sex symbols ever. But it just doesn?t feel like Michelle, does it? Go and look at GQ?s slideshow – it?s very sexy and? it makes me uncomfortable. She always so fragile, it feels like this was done against her will? Unless that fragile thing is just an act, I guess.
As for the interview – it?s pretty in-depth, and this is one of the few times where an interviewer has really plowed right into the Heath Ledger questions, especially regarding the fact that they had been separated for nearly a year before his death. The interviewer also notes at the beginning of the piece that Michelle cried a lot – so she?s still selling fragile. Fragile and ?sexy?. You can read the whole GQ piece here, and here are some highlights:
It seemed crazy at first. Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe? We all knew the two-time Oscar nominee could act?but could she make us drool? America, we have our answer. And what Williams gives GQ in drop-dead gorgeous photos, she equals in insights regarding her incredibly emotional journey thus far. Correspondent Chris Heath meets with Williams in two different cities over three days, and the pair discuss everything from living on her own at age 15 to avoiding playing sexy characters (?I mean, sexuality has been a part of my work, obviously?but it?s never been sexy, it hasn?t been beautiful?) to her imagining she would end up with Heath Ledger (?It?s actually one of my favorite places to visit?).
She?s not drawn to the darkness: “Maybe when I was in my early twenties and my late teens, I was more prone to sitting in it or lacerating myself with it,” she says. “Now I want to move out of it. I have a daughter. I want a happy life.”
On her education, and how she ended up being home-schooled (a better fit with her acting work):
Her last formal school was Santa Fe Christian in San Diego; later its principal would denounce Williams after she appeared in Brokeback Mountain. (?Michelle doesn?t represent the values of this institution,? he said. ?She made the kinds of choices of which we wouldn?t approve.?) ?It didn?t really bother me,? she says, when I allude to this. No twinge, I ask, when you suddenly found out that you?d been living a sinful, artistic career? ?It wasn?t any surprise to me,? she says. ?I knew. I remember my mother saying to me at one point, ?Just don?t make anything your grandmother couldn?t see.? And at that point I knew I was living a sinful artistic career, because I had done, and I knew I would do.?
Being legally emancipated at 15: When Williams legally emancipated herself from her parents at 15, she didn’t do so because of any family schism, but for the independence and the practical advantages?she says she no longer needed a tutor and could work adult hours. When I suggest that it was pretty ambitious and self-contained to think she could handle it, she agrees. “It was just stupid. I didn’t know what I was taking on,” she says. “I don’t think things through very often?I don’t project into the future about how a situation will turn out. Even the simplest things, I’m guilty of making really bad decisions a lot of the time. In my work it’s a capacity that’s served me well, but in my life it can be a problem.”
On playing a bad girl on Dawson?s Creek: ?I wouldn?t say that that would be one of my first qualities as a human being?being sexy,? Williams reasons. ?And I think because my character on Dawson?s Creek was sexy?sexualized?sexual?I saw all the negative attention and connotations that can come along with that. And that those things can keep people from seeing you clearly.?
On Brokeback Mountain: “I didn’t know what to make of it,” she says. “Maybe when you see something different for the first time, you don’t know how to categorize it. It doesn’t really fit with anything else. Like the first time you listen to Bjrk. The first time you eat sashimi.” She hasn’t seen it since. But she does know what she thinks of it now. “I think it’s a great film. And…it’s probably obvious but…” She pauses for a long time, and when she picks up the thought her voice is quieter and higher: “…well, he’s really quite astounding in it. Heath.”
How she and Heath Ledger were drawn to each other: ?There?s an answer that I know,? she says, ?but I don?t want to say.? She talks around this not-saying for a while, then says, ?Our initial meeting, the circumstances of how we first met, were cosmic or something.? They were together through the shoot, and soon she was pregnant. ?Yeah, a lot of things happened at once,? she says. ?It?s a bit like: We had a lot of things to do, because we didn?t have a lot of time, or something.?
Dating after Heath?s death: She explains that a year or two ago, she was putting herself under a lot of pressure to find someone new to spend her life with, for a particular reason. “Because I really wanted, and I really expected or imagined, that Matilda would have siblings that were close to her age. I wanted that for her. But I couldn’t make that happen. And now that she’s 6 that isn’t even a possibility anymore. So something that was making me feel impatient, that’s been removed. For whatever reason, that’s not our luck, or our path.” A further thought. “You know, as hard as certain things have been for me, it’s been harder thinking about how things will be for her. I have a lot of things that she doesn’t, and some of what I have I can give to her?the memories that I have, the objects that I have, the physical reminders that I have, the stories. But she won’t really have any that are solely…” And that is where that sentence ends.
Was there a part of her that imagined she and Ledger would have somehow ended up together? ?That would make me way too sad to answer,? she says quickly, and I hurriedly begin another question, about something completely different, hoping that if I say it fast enough these new words will chase the old words away from where they are hanging in the air between us, and maybe she will let me pretend that it was something I never said. ?No, no,? she says, and I can see the tears forming, and I think she means that she doesn?t want to answer any more questions about anything. I mutter some kind of apology under my breath. But, even now, I?m wrong about everything. Mostly she is just trying to stop my new question. She has something to tell me. ?No,? she says. ?I said it would make me too sad to answer but it?s also???and she nods even as her voice breaks once more with tears???one of my favorite things to imagine.? And through the tears, a beaming, almost beatific smile stretches room-wide across her face. ?It?s actually one of my favorite places to visit.?
[From GQ]
There?s a lot of other stuff in the article in which Michelle?s hipster passport is stamped repeatedly but I found that stuff boring. But, several things struck me about the way Michelle deftly handled the questions about Heath: first, she?s re-imagined him, and she?s still in love with the memory she?s conjured of him, which may or may not be the reality of who he really was. Secondly, she doesn?t want to discuss the idea that both of them had moved on to other partners (in Heath?s case, multiple partners) after their split in 2007. She?s claimed ownership of Heath?s last years that way, for better or for worse.

As I mentioned before, I recently saw My Week With Marilyn, and I really was impressed with Michelle Williams? performance. I?m not fighting with you about her anymore, at least not about her talent. She?s talented, and her work as Marilyn Monroe was solid-to-great. I?ll be pleased if Michelle ends up with another Oscar nomination for Best Actress. But I?ll be kind of disappointed if she wins – I don?t think she should win. It was a good enough movie overall for her to win. But I?m happy to see her at all of the awards shows.
So here?s Michelle at last night?s Critics Choice Awards, where she lost to Viola Davis (who owned it). Michelle went with Chanel, from the 2012 Resort collection. Michelle memorably wore Chanel to last year?s Oscars too, and I absolutely loved her Oscar gown. I?m not completely in love with this gown, but it?s okay. It fits her beautifully and I like that she went for monochromatic black-and-white rather than a wispy, delicate, fragile pastel or barely-there metallic.
As for her styling – meh. I?m still happy that her hair is darker, but the cut is still too short, I think. She needs to grow out those itty-bitty bangs. She can still have short hair, she should just have it, like, a shaggy Mick Jagger cut. I?d like to see her with a different lipstick color too, I think. But one word about Michelle?s skin: PERFECTION. She has beautiful skin!! It looks flawless here, and it looked flawless in My Week With Marilyn too.
Also – I?m pretty sure Busy Phillips was just there as Michelle?s date. Busy is often Michelle?s date at these events, and I think their friendship and girly date nights are super-cute.

Last night, there was an event in Beverly Hills honoring Michelle Williams. I don?t know why. It could be for My Week With Marilyn, or it could be for some other reason. The event was called ?Forevermark & InStyle Beauty & Brilliance Celebration?. Whatev. For the event, Michelle managed to be the only woman I?ve ever seen to make a Versace dress look virginal. We get it, Michelle! You?re fragile and delicate and if we mishandle you, you will shatter. Now wear some color.
Jessica Szohr shows us all how NOT to do it. This is what I mean when I say BANGS TRAUMA. Jesus Christ, she looks awful, and I always thought she was so pretty before this. That hairstyle ages her – she?s in her 20s, and now she?s passing for mid-40s. I will say this though – I kind of love her outfit. I would wear that. But the bangs trauma? NEVER AGAIN.
Julianne Hough in Rafael Cennamo. Pretty hair and easy styling, her skin is a bit too fake-bake orange for my taste, but all in all, a decent look. I like that Julianne usually errs on the side of conservative styles.
Rebecca Romijn in a LBD that I can?t identify. The dress is cute-ish (a bit young for her, in my honest opinion), but she looks good. Beautiful face and skin, good hair. She?s lost weight recently, hasn?t she?

It?s certainly a must-see film for many, and Michelle Williams was spotted at yet another screening of her new movie ?My Week with Marilyn? on Monday night (January 9).
The ?Blue Valentine? babe looked lovely in a knee-length, belted frock as she posed for pictures with co-star Kenneth Branagh out at The Bing Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.
In case you haven?t seen the film ? which hit theaters on December 23 - a synopsis provided by IMDB tells: "Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier?s, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of ?The Prince and the Showgirl.?"
Meanwhile, it?s been a busy 2012 for Williams thus far, as she picked up the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Fest Awards Gala over the weekend for her role as Marilyn.

One of the esteemed honorees of the evening, Michelle Williams looked picture perfect in Prada at the 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala on Saturday night (January 7).
The 31-year-old actress took the Palm Springs Convention Center stage to be presented with the Desert Palm Achievement award for her work in the movie ?My Week with Marilyn?.
Being doted with the trophy by her "Marilyn" co-star Kenneth Branagh, Miss Williams said she was "suddenly overwhelmed" as she took to the podium before offering a heartfelt thank you to Branagh.
Turning to her castmate, Michelle warmly said, "He was the most extraordinary partner to work alongside and the only difficult thing about it was laying down my awe at being in a scene with him."
Williams kindly added, "Thank you for those words, for that heart, for that wit, for that talent and for being by my side in our work and in our lives."

Michelle Williams was on hand at the Palm Springs International Film Festival too, joining the likes of Brangelina, George Clooney and Charlize Theron. Michelle won the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her work as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn (which I will discuss in a moment). First, lets? talk about Michelle?s look. The mini-dress (or cocktail dress) is Prada. It?s cute? but I?m not in love with it. I would have liked to have seen a version of the dress that was all-beaded, you know? I don?t think the skirt is as special as it wants to be, but the beaded top part is lovely. Michelle has also (finally) darkened her hair. This thrills me to no end – I really disliked the too-white-blonde hair she had been sporting ever since she played Marilyn. This reddish-brunette suits her coloring so much better, and she looks less like a Mia Farrow-wannabe.
As for My Week With Marilyn, I finally saw it a few weeks ago, and I have to admit, I was impressed. I still think Michelle?s voice work as Marilyn was hit-or-miss, but overall, her performance was noteworthy, and I wouldn?t hate it if she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. I would hate it if she won, though. Kenneth Branagh – who was on hand at Palm Springs to honor Michelle – was really very good at Laurence Olivier, and I wouldn?t be surprised if he got an Oscar nomination as well. But I have to admit that my favorite part of the film was Dame Judi Dench. She only had a few scenes, and she owned them, beautifully. On the whole, the film can get a little bit cloying and eye-roll-inducing (it wants to be a great love story, but really it?s a portrait of a screwed up movie star), but the period details are fantastic, and it?s worth watching for the actors? performances.

She?s been a busy girl as of late, and last night (November 13) Michelle Williams was spotted at the premiere of her new film ?My Week with Marilyn? in New York City.
The ?Dawson?s Creek? cutie looked absolutely stunning in an Erdem dress teamed with a pair of Vivier heels as she posed for the paparazzi outside the Paris Theatre.
During a recent interview, Michelle chatted about Ms. Monroe?s public persona versus who she really was.
?How you commonly think of Marilyn Monroe- that was a character. That was a finely honed act that she put on and developed over time.?

Bringing her upcoming motion picture to the AFI Fest spotlight, Michelle Williams took to the red carpet for the premiere of "My Week with Marilyn" in Hollywood, CA on Sunday night (November 6).
The 31-year-old actress looked stunning as she worked the press area at Grauman's Chinese Theatre alongside co-stars Julia Ormond and Dominic Cooper.
Aside from Miss Williams and co., "My Week with Marilyn" also stars Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Judi Dench, Emma Watson and Dougray Scott.
Directed by Simon Curtis and set for a November 23rd release date, the much-talked-about film tells the story of "Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier's, who documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl."
Adding to the already strong hype over Miss Williams' performance as Marilyn, the movie's costume designer Jill Taylor told press that Director Curtis was nearly brought to tears upon first seeing Michelle act out the role.
Taylor told, ?We had long fittings with Michelle. When she stepped out as Marilyn for the first time, in proper hair and make-up, director Simon got very emotional. Almost teary."
?He?d been working on this film for seven years, so it was a big moment to see it finally coming to life,? she added.

| Michelle Williams in gold Oscar de la Renta: lovely or too precious & young? | Added 13 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

These are new photos of Michelle Williams at last night?s premiere/screening of My Week With Marilyn at the AFI Fest. The dress is Oscar de la Renta and? I don?t like it much. Yes, this particular shade of gold works well on pale blondes, and it suits her figure and everything. But? I find this look super-boring on Michelle. I know that?s ?on? me, because I?m not in love with Michelle as a person or as an actress. I feel like this dress is too ?cloying? and ?young? and ?precious? on her, which is how I feel about her personality too. This feels like a very young woman?s party dress - like, this is something a rich girl would wear for her 16th birthday party. It?s strange on a 31-year-old hipster with a weird affected accent.
I kind of hate Michelle’s chopped hair too. The resemblance is so strong with Mia Farrow, it bugs. In her recent Elle UK cover profile (I covered some of the photos here), Michelle explained her rationale for keeping the chopped hair:
?What Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair, though that?s unlikely to happen any time soon. The only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it. I?ve really grown into it. I feel like myself with short hair.?
[From Elle via The NYDN]
So we can?t dislike her short Bieber hair because she wears it this way for Heath Ledger, I guess. And she?s going to keep wearing it this way as a ?memorial? to him. Sigh?I know that moved a lot of people, so I?ll try to be careful here. Let me just say it this way? I hope My Week With Marilyn is really poorly reviewed. I hope no one considers Michelle for any awards this year. I hope she doesn?t have to give many more interviews.
