She has always had a heart for helping others, and Zooey Deschanel was spotted at the Alliance for Children?s Rights dinner in Beverly Hills last night (March 1).
The ?New Girl? starlet was all smiles as she posed for the shutterbugs as the Beverly Hilton Hotel in a lacy black dress with black stockings and black heels.
Zooey was in the house to help raise awareness and funds for the Alliance For Children?s Rights, a cause she strongly supports.
Per the organization?s website, ?The Alliance for Children's Rights protects the rights of impoverished and abused children and youth so that they have safe, stable homes, health care and the education they need to thrive. Since our founding in 1992, we have provided free legal services and advocacy to over 100,000 children and youth in Los Angeles County. For many of our clients, The Alliance is the only connection to a safer, brighter future.?

Can you believe this is cover image Allure Magazine chose? For real, Allure? Granted, Zooey Deschanel is ?quirky? and she?s a ?funny girl?. But that?s not a good enough excuse for putting this photo of her ON THE COVER! Anyway, Zooey is on the cover of Allure because she has gotten a career resurgence with The New Girl – she?d always been a relatively in-demand actress, often in independent films or part of an ensemble in bigger movies, but now she?s got a hit show on Fox, and everybody is paying attention to her. Honestly, I was never much of a fan until The New Girl. Now I give her a pass on most of the stuff that used to annoy me, although I would love for her to do something different with her hair. Yes, I take issue with the bangs, but mostly I just want to get all of her hair out of her face – but Zooey seems to think that ?bangs and eyes? are her signature. Here are some highlights from Zooey?s Allure interview:
Zooey?s signature: “I’m bangs and eyes,” she says. “It’s who I am. There have been periods when I’ve grown my bangs out, but I always cut them back, so it’s like, why go through the trouble?”
She?s a lot like her New Girl character: “Because I have brown hair and a low voice, I would get cast as dry, sarcastic, ironic people, which I can do, but it’s not my sense of humor. I’m a very positive person. I get excited easily, and I like to jump around.”
She doesn?t read gossip: “I can’t go on Gawker. I actually think the writing is really funny, but there is a chance that somebody is undercutting me,” she says.
Criticism about her ?overly girlish? style: Deschanel has both worshipful fans and snarky critics who find her overly girlish. Her defense? “If you feel like dressing like a girl, there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking, I need to act like a man, or I need to tone it down to be successful. That’s a very good way to keep women down,” she says.
She?s not an obsessive dieter: While Deschanel watches her weight by sticking to a diet of vegetables, grains, and proteins, she isn’t obsessed. “Some people around me, they’re like 89 pounds,” she says. “I’m not going to say I’m a big girl. I’m a very small person, but I’m a healthy weight. That might be a little weird for Hollywood.”
It Girl status: Deschanel finds irony in the label “It” girl. “‘It’ girl is supposed to be something that only lasts a certain amount of time,” she says. “They keep calling me an ‘It’ girl, and at this point it makes me laugh, because they’ve done that so many times: ‘You’re it’; ‘you’re not it.’ What is ‘it’?”
Being bullied in school: “Girls spit in my face. People were so mean to me. I’d cry every day.”
She went to Northwestern University briefly: “I went to Northwestern because I had gone to a really nontraditional high school. I was like, ‘It’d be cool to have a traditional college experience,’” Deschanel, 32, explains. “Then I was like, ‘Oh, but none of these people understand what’s cool about me. My specialness is not appreciated in this place.’”
Straddling mainstream and outsider status: “I’ve always straddled a weird line — there’s a lot of mainstream stuff that I love. At the same, I still feel like an outsider. I’m the outsider who’s on the inside.”

I do like that Zooey isn?t pin-thin – she?s been in some short skirts and some lingerie in The New Girl, and I was surprised to see how lovely and healthy her figure really is – she looks like a girl who eats healthy most of the time and stays active, but really isn?t obsessed with it. It?s nice. As for the whole ?My specialness is not appreciated in this place? – is she serious? Or is she making fun of herself at the age of 18? Because one of the great things about college is that you?re away from home and you learn that you?re not a beautiful, special and unique flower, you know? Maybe she was joking.

Stepping out for the first time since her divorce declaration, Zooey Deschanel was spotted leaving a dance studio in Studio City, California yesterday (January 5).
The ?New Girl? cutie had been attending a dance class, and looked marvelous in a grey scoopneck top with a red skirt and black stockings.
As previously reported by the GossipCenter, Zooey filed official divorce documents on December 27th, effectively ending her marriage to Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard.
Separated since Halloween, Zooey and Ben cited ?irreconcilable differences? as the cause for their split.

Indie poster girl Zooey Deschanel has officially filed for divorce from her husband, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. Zooey and Ben announced their split in November after just two years of marriage. We didn’t hear much insider dirt on why these two called it quits, and just had a statement from their people that it was “amicable” and that “no third party was involved.” I doubt that it was “amicable,” as Bedhead often points out about celebrity divorces, but maybe it’s true they just drifted apart or had different goals or whatever. The thing that really interested me about this story is that the divorce filing was made public and it lists Zooey’s assets and expenditures. She’s very sensible with her money, saves more than she spends, and has no consumer debt. Girl has over $3 million in assets and she’s only 31. Good for her! Here’s more:
Zooey Deschanel is worth millions, spends relatively modestly, and has a zero balance on her credit cards … this according to documents her lawyer just filed in her divorce case.
TMZ broke the story … Zooey just filed for divorce from her hubby of 2 years — Ben Gibbard, the lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie.
For some reason, her lawyer attached Zooey’s income and expense declaration.
Here’s the lowdown:
– Zooey — who stars in “New Girl” — makes an average of $95,000 a month
– Her expenses average $22,550 a month
– She has 3 credit cards … AmEx, Visa and Mastercard, all of which have a 0 balance.
– She has $1,578,000 in the bank
– Zooey has an additional $1,645,000 in stocks, bonds, etc.
– Zooey has real and personal property valued at $693,300
As for what she spends a month, Zooey says she drops $1,000 on groceries and household supplies, $500 eating out (really?), $800 on utilities, $300 for her various phones and email accounts, $600 in laundry and cleaning, $2,000 for clothes.
She also donates $1,500 a month to charity.

So did Zooey mean to make all this public or was it a mistake by her lawyer? I wonder if she’s going to have to pay out the nose to her ex. Death Cab for Cutie is well known, but not many musicians are rolling in it.
Do you guys ever watch Suze Ormon’s show? I download her CNBC podcast, and she helps people go through their finances to see if they’re on track for their retirement and goals. It’s all about saving for a rainy day and earning more than you spend. That’s what these financials from Zooey brought to mind, because Suze would give her high marks for saving her money. Even though Zooey is wildly rich to most of us, look at how people like Lindsay Lohan have squandered small fortunes living at high end hotels and buying designer goods. It’s just nice to hear about a celebrity who appreciates what she has, doesn’t live above her means, and donates to charity. It kind of solidifies my high opinion of her. She may act somewhat ditzy and precious, but she has a good head on her shoulders. I would love to hear about a new romance for Zooey, preferably with someone like Joseph Gordon Levitt who is doing well in his own right and isn’t interested in her cash. I doubt she’d spend it on some guy anyway.

If this was Ryan Gosling and [Random Disneyland Companion], I would be yelling and pulling out my hair right now. But my affection for Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt has NEVER been higher at this moment in time. I absolutely love Zooey on The New Girl, and a few weeks ago, I saw 50/50 and fell in love with JGL hard. Like, I want him. And if I can?t have him, I want to watch Joe and Zooey make out a little. Anyway, they starred together in 500 Days of Summer (which is totally worth watching if you haven?t seen it), and they?ve known each other for years. So, of course, JGL stopped by Zooey?s place and recorded a song with her. Try not to squeal when he flashes his dimples at her. Try not to coo when they give each other these absolutely magical looks. Aw?..
Try not to watch it a million times. I already have. I love them. Both. They need to make babies together, like, right now. Anyway, Zooey posted the video the site that she?s somehow associated with (?), Hello Giggles. Here?s what she wrote:
I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic, where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since.
When we did 500 Days of Summer 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and make up trailer; we had loads of fun. Stepping out for a night of recognition, Zooey Deschanel was honored at TV Guide Magazine's Annual Hot List Party last night (November 7).
Held at the Greystone Mansion Supperclub in Beverly Hills, the "Our Idiot Brother" actress looked beautiful in a deep blue belted frock and gold glitter pumps as she posed for pictures ahead of the evening's event.
Getting nothing but love from one of her "New Girl" costars, Max Greenwood gushed about the extent of Zooey's talents, calling her a "special lady."
"She steps in front of the camera and you go, 'look at that.' That's like a little bit magical?It's annoying," Greenwood jokingly explained to Entertainment Tonight.

I?m so glad that I wrote about Zooey Deschanel last week, and that the post got so many comments. Zooey evokes strong reactions for and against. Some people think her hipster shtick is just an act, and that she?s a chick trying too hard to be different and precious. Other people think she?s genuine, and that she?s sort of cool. Well, fans and foes alike, did you know that she?s married? I didn?t, honestly. It?s not even something where I can say, ?Oh, I sort of remember that, vaguely.? I have no recollection of Zooey ever being married to Death Cab For Cutie?s Ben Gibbard. But she was, and now it?s over.
Hipster heartbreak. Just two years after tying the knot, Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard have separated, Deschanel’s rep confirms to Us Weekly.
“It was mutual and amicable,” a source adds. “There was no third party involved.”
The New Girl actress, 31, and Death Cab for Cutie frontman, 35, got married near Seattle, Wash. in late September 2009.
In Deschanel’s September cover story in New York magazine, Gibbard gushed about meeting and pursuing the star, who also fronts the band She and Him. “I’d seen her movies and obviously I thought she was very beautiful,” Gibbard explained.
When their mutual music manager finally introduced them three years ago, “I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me.”
Deschanel told iVillage that it was “definitely hard” being apart from her indie rocker guy when he was away on tour. “He’s really good at calling. He’s probably better than I am. He’s a very conscientious person.”
What surprised her most about marriage life? “You can’t expect to make no effort. You still have to make the effort and be kind and understanding. It sort of just solidifies your commitment.”

Now I kind of wonder if Zooey and Ben have been ?over? for a while. She?s been doing a lot of red carpets and promotional work for The New Girl and a handful of film projects, and Ben was rarely at her side. Maybe he just did his own thing and they?re like the Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin of the hipster set, or maybe they were over really quickly, and she?s just announcing it now because???? I don?t know. I said before that Zooey is the kind of girl I would be annoyed with in real life, but I still come away feeling some sympathy for Zooey. Poor girl.

America’s indie darlings — I’m not sure if that’s accurate but I’d assume so — are getting a divorce. The whimsical woodland fairy, Zooey Deschanel, and the dulcet-toned indie rocker, Ben Gibbard, are ending their marriage of two years.
A rep for Zooey says the split is “amicable” and “mutual.” Though that remains to be seen. If Ben Gibbard’s next album is so depressing that you want to slit your wrists more than usual, then you know there might be hard feelings.
Sigh. And I thought these two were perfect for each other. I don’t know what to believe in anymore. *Tears off skinny jeans, cries*

I?m about to admit something I never thought I?d write: I kind of like Zooey Deschanel as an actress. I?ve been watching The New Girl, and? it?s not a bad show, AT ALL. It?s actually really cute, bordering on ?pretty awesome, actually.? After years spent as a supporting player in big-budget films and a sometimes-lead in independent films, Zooey has finally found herself helming what could be a solid television show with a long future. Now, even though my general warmth for Zooey as an actress has increased, she also pisses me off as a person. She always strikes me as a too-cutesy hipster chick trying too hard to be ?different? and ?wacky?. Maybe her personality is genuinely wacky and quirky. Or maybe she?s just a pretty normal girl who puts on airs to stand out.
All I know is that she?s 31 years old, and it wouldn?t hurt her to start dressing and acting her age in public. BUT - I do enjoy how The New Girl is built around Zooey?s quirks and weirdness, however feigned - the character Zooey plays seems fleshed-out and authentic, like you would actually run into that girl and be annoyed with her in real life. Anyway, Zooey took part in Us Weekly?s ?25 Things You Don?t Know About?? feature, and I can?t hate on her too hard:
1. I accidentally entered a beauty pageant.
2. I hate camping, but I love summer camp.
3. I took three years off from acting and toured with my band, She & Him.
4. I used to dress up like a princess to do my homework.
5. I have had brown hair and bangs since I was 2. One year I dyed it blonde, which felt so weird.
6. I drove my mom’s old Volvo until just a few years ago.
7. I had a party at the American Girl store — recently.
8. I love coffee. I mean, I really love coffee.
9. I am always early to work but sometimes late to other things.
10. I started a comedy website for females, with my friends Sophia and Molly, called HelloGiggles.
11. I know This is Spinal Tap by heart.
12. I am really competitive at board games.
13. I talk to my mom every day.
14. I love work more than vacations.
15. I love pictures of people’s dogs.
16. I am pretty crafty. I like to bake.
17. I hate papaya.
18. I use scrunchies. Don’t judge.
19. I love pajamas.
20. I am a true blue music nerd.
21. I love cereal.
22. Pastoralia by George Saunders is one of my favorite novels.
