Here is Zooey Deschanel wearing traditional blue sari from last season’s New Girl finale turned into make-shift beachwear on the Santa Monica set of the Fox sitcom. She was joined on the sandy set by her co-star Jake Johnson, a small boy, and an imposing cop character.
Marvellous! Love the soft beach light and everything.

I?ve said this before and I will continue saying it because I don?t care if I?m called ?uncool? by the arbiters of cool television: I watch New Girl and The Mindy Project back-to-back and I love both shows. While I think New Girl had some bad episodes last year, I?m still sticking with it because more often than not, even a bad episode still has some really funny/sweet moments. (Incidentally, The Mindy Project just kept getting better and better throughout its first season, and I have high hopes for the second season.) So, I?m a Zooey Deschanel convert ? I used to find her annoying and twee, but I love her on New Girl and I?m really liking Zooey as a person, in interviews and such. She?s quirky and weird and I like the way she talks about her version of feminism and female empowerment. Here are some highlights from her new Marie Claire interview:
On crowds: ?I get very overwhelmed by crowds, especially of strangers.? Her idea of heaven on earth is ?being on a farm, with horses, farm animals, and dogs. Select people, some food, and maybe some music. That sounds really great.?
On people today: ?My theory is that people in this day and age want to dismiss things. So they want to be able to dismiss you. They say, ?You don?t belong, you don?t deserve this because here?s why, and let me find an intellectual argument for why you wearing Pink or cuff sleeves or a bow makes you not worthy of your accomplishments. Everything you?ve done doesn?t matter because you wore the wrong thing or you speak in a way that?s feminine or you identify yourself as feminine.? And I just think that?s bulls–t. And smart people are doing it, and that?s surprising to me. I?ll give them being smart, but they?re being very shortsighted.?
She continues: ?It?s just attacking who I am. A lot of times it doesn?t have to do with what I get paid to do. It has to do with, ?Oh, you stupid person.? Even I get slammed and overwhelmed by how negative the Internet can get, and I?m an adult. I don?t pay any mind to it, but it?s pretty shocking how when you give people anonymity ? it?s like the worst of human nature.?
On her website, HelloGiggles.com: ?I just felt it?s important to teach young girls to be strong people, to not think, I can?t do this because I?m worried about what people will say. There are worse consequences, but online negativity stops people from being creative, part of which is having bad ideas as well as good ideas. When somebody says, ?That idea?s stupid,? you stop your flow of ideas. We can?t have the next generation be so afraid because they have been attacked.?
On her speech patterns: ?I became aware that people were criticizing the way I speak, which seems weird to me. I speak the way I speak, and I am an intelligent person. Sometimes I lean into California-speak more for entertainment value. It?s not that I can?t live in a world without the word like.?
Being bullied in middle school: In an oft-told tale, one day a popular classmate actually spat in her face. “I was talking to her, and she didn’t want me to talk to her. I honestly did nothing,” Deschanel recalls. “I just remember walking over to my locker and wiping the spit off my face, so humiliated.” She recently spotted her assailant in photographs at a mutual friend’s wedding. “I’ve forgiven her,” she says now. “I just don’t forget.” Looking back, she thinks middle school helped build character. “A lot of people I knew who didn’t struggle, who maybe came from a lot of money or were really pretty?those people actually have a harder time as adults in a way. They don’t even understand what it’s like to not be pretty…I’m not saying it’s good, I don’t think people should be mean to each other, [but] I think it made me stronger.”
Deciding to do a TV show: “[I] always went into [New Girl] with the thought that it could last. I never thought about doing TV, particularly because I didn’t want to be signed up for something for that long. But after being frustrated with the kinds of material I was getting in the feature world?and it’s very competitive? I just thought, Why am I doing this in the first place? If you’re an actor and you want to go where the material is, it doesn’t matter the medium. All these people who used to say, ‘Oh, I’ll never do TV,’ now want to because they see things that are successful and good on TV.” (In 1999, when Deschanel dropped out of Northwestern University after seven months to appear in Almost Famous, someone told her she should do a sitcom because she was funny. “And I was like, ‘That’s crazy.’ I remember thinking, I want to do art films.”)
Her new seven-season contract: “I always felt like a little bit of an outsider, and now I’m an outsider who’s a satellite for the outsiders? All of a sudden, I’m on the inside, and it feels weird. Because I always saw myself as sort of not mainstream.”
She has a boyfriend but she doesn?t want to talk about him: She showed a picture of her rescue dogs and mentioned that “my boyfriend” took it. She leans over to look at my list of “her boyfriend” questions, which she wants to skip. “I will say we got the dogs together, and he loves them very much.” When the couple visited the Black Dahlia house in Los Angeles, where some believe Elizabeth Short was murdered in 1947, all of a sudden they were “house-hunting.” “We saw it just to see a Lloyd Wright house,” she says. “Just because you go see a house doesn’t mean you’re going to buy it.”
Does she want kids? “I’m not going to answer that question. I’m not mad at you for asking that question, but I’ve said it before: I don’t think people ask men those questions.”
Learning from marriage and divorce? “Learned from being married and divorced? I will say this: Whether you’re married or not, if you’re in a relationship, you have to wake up every day and say, ‘I want to stay with this person.’ You have to make the commitment every day and every second and every minute.”

I know what she?s getting at with the questions about babies, and I respect her answer ? if she doesn?t want to talk about it, she shouldn?t. That was an effective way of shutting it down and I wish more celebrity women would do that. That being said, I have noticed that more and more, male celebrities ARE getting baby questions, so there. Feminism! As for Zooey and how she defends herself against people who call her stupid for wearing Pink and being girly? I understand what she?s getting at. I think it?s more about how she ? and other pink-wearing girly-girls ? are underestimated in society because of their girlishness. It?s not so much about ?intellect? it?s about ?can I take this woman seriously if she?s dressed like a character from Alice in Wonderland?? But I like the way Zooey is waging that battle.

Stepping out to promote her hit show ?New Girl,? Zooey Deschanel paid a visit to ?The Late Show with David Letterman? last night (May 7).
The ?Failure to Launch? lady looked gorgeous as she chatted with Dave about bringing her two dogs with her from California to New York City.
Deschanel began, ?They?re mutts. They?re very cute. Their names are Zelda and Dot. They?re very sweet dogs- two girls- and they love each other. They were actually turned into the shelter together so I adopted them together.?
?It?s a little bit chaotic for them because they?re California dogs. They move at a slower pace, more like surfer dogs? They do get along with other dogs, but one of them, Dot, she tends to bark at the bigger dogs when she wants them to play with her. And she doesn?t understand English- I can?t explain to her that if you bark at a big dog it thinks you?re picking a fight with them.?
Letterman fired back, ?That?s the problem with getting a dog at the pound- they don?t understand English.?

Zooey Deschanel covers the April issue of InStyle! I?m not crazy about the cover shot, but I like that she?s the cover girl. I like that Zooey has become ? and she?s owning it ? a really awesome television star. New Girl hasn?t been on for the past two weeks (damn American Idol) and I?m going through withdrawals. Something about the character of Jess Day? it makes me accept bangs. Briefly. Before I get to the interview excerpts from InStyle, I did want to mention this ? Zooey just adopted two puppies! They?re rescues from the Bill Foundation (in LA) and she named them Zelda and Dot. LOOK AT THE PUPPIES.
I want to eat them! OMG. So sleepy and sweet. After Zooey posted this photo on her Twitter/Instagram, she asked her Twitter followers to send in photos of their rescue puppies, and it was a really cute thread. Anyway, on to the InStyle excerpts:
Her personal style: ?People are more affected by how I look and dress myself than I think anyone would care to admit. I guess I?ll just have to start wearing power suits.?
Style isn?t about luxe branding: ?Style isn?t when you buy yourself the most expensive things,? she says. ?It?s being creative and able to put together what you?ve collected.?
Growing up, she learned how to be a savvy shopper: ?I didn?t have a lot of money, so I got things for, like $2, $3, and made myself look as good as I could. Limitations make you more creative.?
On how she?s changed since high school: ?There were people who were fully participating in high school. Not me. I felt a little bit isolated, like I was observing. I was a very cautious person. I always think my natural state is to feel like an outsider, and I don?t quite relate to anybody. I used to be easily scared; I?m much more fearless now.?

I like that Zooey said that about her style not being about the most expensive things. I know Zooey gets a lot crap for being the archetype of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but I?ve gotten to the point where I appreciate Zooey?s vintage-y hipsterism more than materialism just for materialism?s sake (cough… Beyonce). Ready to share her show?s success, Zooey Deschanel attended a panel at the Paley Center For Media's PaleyFest on Monday (March 11) in Beverly Hills.
All decked out in a sleeveless black-and-white striped frock, the ?New Girl? cutie was ready to dish with the crowd about what?s ahead for her character, Jess.
The popular show follows an offbeat young woman who, after a bad break up, moves into an apartment loft with three single guys.
A new episode of ?New Girl? airs on Tuesday, March 19 at 9/8 central on FOX.

Showing off her impeccable football throwing skills, Zooey Deschanel was hard at work filming "New Girl" in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday (January 23).
The 33 year-old actress looked casually chic in black tights, matching shorts and a striped top as she tossed around the ball with her fellow co-stars.
Keeping her fans up to date on all of her recent business projects, Zooey took to her Twitter page earlier this week to show off her latest work, writing, "Here?s a look at my new @Pantene spot."
Miss Deschanel was announced as the new celebrity ambassador for the popular haircare brand back in August, where she gushed, "Being a ?Pantene girl? has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid."

Putting in a days work, Zooey Deschanel was on the set of "New Girl" in West Hollywood on Tuesday (January 22).
Decked out in a bright Pink cape and black skinny pants, the "Elf" cutie took time between takes to study up on her lines as she sought solitude amongst the park-like scene.
Now in its second season, the popular comedy has gained quite a fan following for the adventures of Jess and her roommates.
A new episode of "New Girl," titled "Cooler" will air on Tuesday, January 29 at 9/8 central on Fox.

Sometimes I get tired of my own negativity. For real. Which is exactly why I?ve been putting off my coverage of these ladies: Kerry Washington, Sienna Miller, Marion Cotillard and Zooey Deschanel. Like, I like all of those women (I?m not crazy about Sienna, but I don?t have a hate-on for her), and I?m an especially big fan of Zooey these days. But all of these ladies got it SO, SO WRONG last night. For Kerry and Marion, it was a question of length, and both seemed to not understand that they could really go BIG for the Golden Globes. Kerry just wore a huge ball gown to the UK premiere of Django, and then she shows up at the Globes in a little slip of a cocktail dress? NO. And Marion should know better too.
But let?s start with Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta. Yes, it?s a ball gown. Yes, it?s a bad red ? too light and too orange-y. Yes, she styled it with a ponytail and giant pearls. I just can?t, okay? The pearls were the worst part of a bad look. They turned this from ?unfortunate hipster princess? to ?So Zooey is Barbara Bush now??
Marion Cotillard in Dior. NO. I might have accepted it if it was full-length, but the asymmetrical look is done poorly, the color is wrong, and in photographs, it looks like a stiff poly-blend.
Kerry Washington in Miu Miu. You know what? I would have loved this at a premiere for Django. But she wore the beautiful ball gown to the premiere and the little cocktail dress to the Globes, and it?s just wrong.
And finally, Sienna Miller in Erdem. She said she wanted to go for a hot British designer, and it?s true ? Erdem is all over the place these days, mostly because of Duchess Kate. But we?ll never see Duchess Kate in this child-like playsuit-looking fugness. I?m sorry, y?all, but I loathe this. It?s dated and poorly executed and it doesn?t flatter her.

Zooey Deschanel covers the February issue of Glamour magazine as photographed by the legendary Ellen von Unwerth. Let me make it quite clear that I find Zooey to be a very pretty woman, and I appreciate that she is willing to run with a personal style that is so different than most other young actresses. However, I can’t stomach Zooey in anything more than small doses. Even though I really loved 500 Days of Summer and Tin Man, she pretty much plays the same part in nearly every movie, and I’ve never watched “New Girl,” but I understand that the show was created and molded around the quirky Zooey persona. Now how about this photoshoot? This shot with the daisy-printed sundress is perfectly lovely.
