Zooey Deschanel and her sister Emily Deschanel are both very successful actresses. Emily was the star and producer of Bones for twelve seasons, while Zooey was an indie-darling-turned-TV-star, and she?s currently moving between TV and film, plus she?s engaged to one of the Property Brothers. Before Emily and Zooey were making their big breaks as actresses, the ?Deschanel? name was already well-known in Hollywood. Their father, Caleb Deschanel, is a well-respected cinematographer and director of photography, and his CV goes back to the 1970s. Caleb Deschanel has worked with directors like Hal Ashby, Barry Levinson, William Friedkin, Richard Sheridan and on and on. He?s been nominated for six Oscars. He?s a big deal! But according to Zooey, being the daughter of a six-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer father does not equal ?nepotism.?
Zooey Deschanel has denied that her six-time Oscar nominee father and actor mother made it easier for her to enter the film and TV industry. The New Girl star has been branded a ?nepo baby? in recent times ? a term referring to beneficiaries of ?nepotism? and given to celebrities with family connections allowing them exclusive access to rare opportunities.
Deschanel?s father is Caleb Deschanel, a cinematographer who has worked on movies including The Lion King, The Patriot, My Sister?s Keeper and The Passion of Christ. He also has credits on other classics including The Godfather and Titanic. He has been nominated for best cinematography at the Academy Awards six times for his work on The Right Stuff, The Natural, Fly Away Home, The Patriot, The Passion of the Christ, and Never Look Away. Meanwhile, the Elf star?s mother is Twin Peaks actor Mary Jo Deschanel (formerly Weir), and her sister is Bones and Spider-Man 2 star Emily Deschanel. Zooey denied that her family made it easier for her to become an actor, in an interview with Lewis Howes on The School of Greatness podcast.
?It?s funny because people be like, ?Oh, nepotism?, I?m like no. My dad?s a DP [director of photography, another term for cinematographer]. No one?s getting jobs because their dad?s a DP. It?s definitely not.?
However, she acknowledged that she received some ?creative? help. ?My mum is an actor and my dad is a cinematographer and a director. I can?t possibly emphasise enough how much creative help I had from my family unit. My dad is a great creative mind and such a talented person. My mum is a great actor and is so nurturing. My mum would coach me when I didn?t have an acting coach, she would help me, read lines with me. She?d be so supportive. I would have so many great discussions about film and filmmaking with my dad. They both would help me. My dad would also read lines with me and give direction. Then having a sister whose an actor. It just makes you automatically have a community, and how much our communities help us ? whether its our families or our found communities.?

I just? why can?t anyone just admit it and acknowledge their privilege?? Why do we have to go through this every single time?? It brings up something else I?ve been wondering, which is: do these people not understand the concept of nepotism? It feels like these idiot nepo babies think nepotism is specifically ?my mother called the director and got me this role.? While that is definitely nepotism, it?s more than that it?s having a famous name, having an inside track within the industry, having a well-connected father who has worked alongside some of the best directors in the industry for decades. It?s stepping inside the casting office and the casting director saying ?Oh, ?Deschanel,? is your father Caleb, and are you Emily?s sister?? At the same time she?s like ?no, I?m not a nepo baby,? she?s literally describing all of the privileges she had growing up in a creative, well-connected Hollywood family!

Here are some photos of Zooey Deschanel and her (uber-hot) husband Jacob Pechenik at the LA premiere of Trolls this week. I had hoped that being with a hottie MAN like Jacob would have forced the twee out of Zooey, but then they had a baby and they named her Elsie Otter, so maybe Jacob enjoys the twee as well. Anyway, little Elsie Otter crops up in a story Zooey told to Ellen DeGeneres this week. I watched the clip (I?m including it at the end of the post) and it?s not like Zooey is trying to ?call out? American Airlines or slam them publicly. It seems like there was some kind of misunderstanding and Zooey was told that the airline no longer allows families with babies or small children to board first.
Zooey Deschanel recounted the incident during an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres show this week, revealing she was sent away because she hadn’t paid for priority boarding. She said: ‘They stopped letting people go first with babies and there?s so much stuff [that you're traveling with]. I was really excited about this privilege – that you get to go on first if you have a baby.’
But much to her dismay, the airline she was travelling with told her that she had to wait like the other passengers. She continued: ‘The first time we went on a plane with her I was like, “OK, we’re ready!” and they [the staff)]were like, ‘No, you can’t come on?… we had three seats in coach. The people who get on first pay a lot of money for this privilege.’
Unsurprisingly, Degeneres was unimpressed with the story, telling her guest, ‘It?s hard enough to travel with a baby. You?ve got all kinds of stuff.’
American Airlines told MailOnline Travel: ‘We do apologize to Ms. Deschanel for any confusion that occurred during the boarding process. Our policy is to pre-board families with children upon request, free of charge.’

Watching the clip, it?s clear that Zooey was just sort of telling a funny story about flying for the first time with Elsie Otter, but Ellen was pissed off on her behalf that American Airlines didn?t let her board early. Since I don?t travel that much these days, I didn?t even know that boarding early with babies/kids is such a thing, but it makes sense? although it does seem to be one of those hot-button ?mommy war? issues that end up being unexpectedly polarizing. Only bad mothers board early! No, only bad mothers DON?T board early!
You can also feel that American Airlines really doesn?t want Ellen blowing this up to be a bigger controversy, thus those tweets. If it?s American Airlines? policy to pre-board families with children, why was Zooey told in no uncertain terms that she couldn?t board early with a small infant?
At around the 2:30 mark is when she talks about the plane stuff. You can watch the whole interview, but? yeah, a little Zooey goes a long way. She?s so twee.

Ever since Zooey Deschanel got with her current husband Jacob Pechenik, I?ve been hoping that Zooey would sort of abandon the twee. I convinced myself that she had matured a bit, and then she named her daughter Elsie Otter and all bets were off. Peak Twee had been achieved. So it?s strange to see Zooey on the cover of Redbook, a magazine which usually veers more towards the Jennifer Garner demographic rather than moms-who-name-their-kids-Otter. Zooey?s promoting New Girl, but mostly she just talks about her baby and how her life has changed with motherhood.
How her little girl, Elsie Otter made her grow up?sorta: ?I?ve never really felt like an adult. But I think it?s a huge accomplishment to have a child, so maybe I feel like an adult for that reason!?
On the importance of women supporting other women: ?Growing up, girls get all of these cues that you?re not supposed to be aggressive. You can?t be bossy. If you?re assertive, you?re bitchy. There are a lot of negative things that are said about women who are powerful, and I think that it makes for a climate where women end up being inadvertently passive-aggressive toward one another, and sometimes trying to pull each other down.?
Slowing down post-baby: ?I?ve slowed things down a bit. I think it?s good for your whole self? your creative self, your professional self, and just your soul? to take a little time for yourself and your family. You can spend your whole life going after things, but I think you risk missing out on some really powerful self-reflection.
The expectations for the post-baby body: ?To expect someone to look like her pre-baby self immediately is odd. Because you just grew a human and then birthed that human?there?s a lot that needs to go back to where it was. All your organs move around, for chrissakes!?

?I?ve never really felt like an adult.? Yeah, and that bugs. She’s 36 years old! But I do think she?s probably, hopefully matured with motherhood, Otter-naming withstanding. I don?t have a problem with ?I think it?s a huge accomplishment to have a child,? because I think it is an accomplishment. Maybe that?s a strange word to use, but the gestation, the birth, the fact that you?re bringing another life into the world, that IS an accomplishment (just one I want no part of). I also don?t have a problem with what she says about post-baby bodies and lady-on-lady hate.

As we learned yesterday, Zooey Deschanel named her daughter Elsie Otter. I really just? CANNOT with that name, I?m sorry. I know it?s not my baby and I know it doesn?t concern me at all, but can we all agree as a society not to name our children after woodland creatures? No Otters, Bears (coughKateWinsletcough), Beavers, Sheep, Cows, etc. Some of you thought that Zooey was perhaps pranking the world by releasing a fake name for her baby. Nope. Zooey was on the Today show yesterday morning and she was asked point-blank about the baby name. She confirmed it with a twee, hipster giggle, saying:
“I love otters? she?s going to love them. We just really liked the name Elsie, and then we both love otters because they’re so sweet and also smart. They use tools, they keep their favorite tools, they hold hands while they sleep, there are so many amazing things about otters. They’re wonderful animals.”

I actually agree with her that otters are cool animals and that otters are pretty amazing overall. But that?s no excuse for naming your child OTTER. Peak Twee has officially been reached. Or has it? Perhaps Zooey?s first choice was calling her baby girl Banjo Otter and her husband was like, ?Nope, that?s my line in the sand. We?re not naming the baby Banjo Otter.?
Here?s the Today Show interview. I used to really like Zooey, just like I used to really like New Girl. But New Girl went off the rails several seasons ago and Zooey just? ugh. She sort of plucks my last nerve here.

Here is new mom Zooey Deschanel taking a break from her newborn to join Kate Hudson and Bill Murray at the New York premiere of their new movie ‘Rock the Kasbah.’
Her daughter was born in Austin, Texas, in late July… continued the riff on the “Today” show Tuesday after the exuberant panel of co-hosts couldn’t get her to spill many details on what it was like to film “Kasbah” with Bill Murray.

Here are some photos of Zooey Deschanel at last night?s NYC premiere of Rock the Kasbah, a film where Zooey plays a rock star and Bill Murray plays her roadie/tour manager or something. It looks sort of stupid, honestly. It looks like the ?comedy? is based on Bill Murray making fun of Arabic-speakers because they speak Arabic. Anyway, Zooey looks pretty here. She?s made very few public appearances since giving birth in August and she?s probably just enjoying her time at home with her new husband and baby. While on the red carpet, Zooey did confirm her daughter?s name too, and this is the first time we?re hearing it. Zooey, the Forever Manic Pixie Dream Girl, has named her daughter? Elsie Otter. Elsie Otter Pechenik.
It took a few months, but Zooey Deschanel has finally spilled the beans on her baby girl?s name. The New Girl star and her husband, Jacob Pechenik, have chosen Elsie Otter for their now 3-month-old daughter, the couple told PEOPLE Wednesday at the Rock the Kasbah premiere in New York City.
?It?s Elsie?? Deschanel began, while Pechenik finished, ?Otter.? ?Like the animal,? the actress explained, with her husband adding, ?Sea otter.?
Born in late July in Austin, Texas, Elsie is the first child for the pair, who announced their marriage and their daughter?s birth in August.

Elsie Otter sounds like a children?s cartoon character. Elsie Otter is BFFs with Beverly Beaver, Alonzo Alpaca and Mary Meerkat. A lot has been said about Zooey and her twee hipster nonsense, but I really and truly thought that when Zooey met a real, adult dude (Jacob), she grew up a bit. But I guess there was still a lot of twee left in Zooey. Either that or Zooey is just a massive Benedict Cumberbatch fan and we never knew.

Zooey Deschanel?s cleavage on this Cosmopolitan cover though? I mean, WOW. I had no idea she was that busty. I guess that?s the good thing about pregnancy, right? Either that or Cosmo used some Photoshop magic to give her Barbie-doll-chest. Zooey covers the June issue of Cosmo, and she ends up discussing some hot-button issues, like whether she?ll do a photoshoot in a bikini after she has her baby, whether women are funny and whether we should #AskHerMore on the red carpet. Some highlights:
On achieving success: ?I?m very focused. I work all the time, but I do what I love and I don?t care what people think of it. You don?t become successful by trying to be ?a success.? You become successful by doing things that give you pleasure. That?s a hallmark of mine.?
On not posing for a ?body after baby? tabloid photo shoot: ?Haven?t we all seen those pictures of a sexy new mom in a bikini after one month? I will not be that person. I?ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don?t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality. I just eat healthy and work out and don?t worry about my weight too much. Actresses aren?t models, and most of them never wanted to be.?
On women in television: ?It?s a good time for women on TV. We can be funny in our own way?and funny doesn?t mean just one thing. Funny isn?t just one-liners. It?s big personalities and individualism.?
On the #AskHerMore Twitter campaign during Awards season: ?I?m all for people asking actresses more intelligent questions. Just because you?re wearing a nice dress doesn?t mean you don?t have any ideas. It?s a shame to reduce smart, talented women to clothes models. But you can be a feminist and femmy. I don?t see how those things contradict each other.?

At this point, I feel like I?ve ranted about #AskHerMore about a million times. If you?d like to read one of my month-old rants about it, go here. I have no problem with telling red carpet journalists that they should ask ?important? questions to the ladies, in addition to asking them what they?re wearing. But I hate this Pollyanna act from some actresses, like the red carpet isn?t a multi-billion dollar industry, like they aren?t getting thousands of dollars in freebies with the understanding that they say a few sentences about the designer, the jewelry and the shoes. I hate this idea that red carpet show viewers need to listen to actresses talking about ?the issues? or ?their craft? rather a quick ?Who are you wearing? Are you having fun? Is your mom your date tonight?? And I don?t see how a love of fashion and a love of red carpet shows is un-feminist either.

True story: I loved New Girl?s first season and I hung in there about half-way through the third season. Then I gave up. The show went off the rails and at this point, I really don?t want to even deal with Zooey Deschanel or her adorkability. ?Adorkable? was the branding word used for New Girl and Zooey during the first few years of New Girl. It was twee and grating and most people were over ?adorkable? pretty quickly. Turns out, Zooey has been over it for a while too. Zooey?s promoting a new indie film, The Driftless Area, and she sat down with HuffPo to discuss the chains of adorkable.
Word to the wise: Stop referring to Zooey Deschanel as “adorkable.” The term has been used to describe the “New Girl” star ever since the show premiered in 2011, but Deschanel is over the expression. In an interview with The Huffington Post, the 35-year-old actress admits she’s sometimes misinterpreted by the public.
“I don?t always identify, perhaps, with the way that I?m portrayed in certain public contexts. I try to stay away from that sort of thing,” she explained, adding that the word “adorkable” was a successful “New Girl” marketing campaign. “That was something that was calculated, you know what I mean? That was our marketing department at Fox and they did a really good job with our first season, but that’s a word that describes the character that I play, not me. I don?t personally have identification with that word myself.”
“In addition, I don?t really care what people think of me,” she continued. “I know that sounds crazy because you?re supposed to care about what people think of you, I guess, as an actor, but I really don?t. Obviously I’m grateful for all of the opportunities that I?ve had thus far, including ‘New Girl,’ but I don?t think I’ve ever met a person who knows me use that word to describe me, so it?s not of any consequence to me.”
Deschanel tries to focus on what really matters in her career — nabbing roles she’s passionate about and interested in — rather than the characteristics she seemingly presents. “It?s dangerous to start worrying or pandering too much in either direction,” she said of identifying with a certain persona. “Some people get so caught up in one version of themselves and then, that blatant rejection of what people think of them — like the band who doesn?t want to play their No. 1 hit or something — isn?t healthy. It?s also not healthy to over-identify with it either,” Deschanel added. “I?m just kind of neutral — I?m an entertainer, and I do different types of things to entertain people, but ultimately when I make a choice, I?m making that choice to challenge myself and do something that seems like it would be interesting. That?s my philosophy.”

That?s a lot of words to simply say ?adorkable isn?t my jam, you guys.? So, do you believe her? Is ?adorakable? a prison made by marketing teams? Sure, it totally was. But that was Zooey?s vibe for a while too and she played it up. I think what we?re seeing now is just a woman who has matured. Zooey isn?t so twee anymore ? she?s happily knocked up and she?s with a more mature dude/partner. She?s even doing something different with those GD bangs. And yes, it does sound like Zooey cares a lot about what people think of her. Just my opinion. People who really don?t give a crap don?t give lengthy diatribes about how they?re not adorkable.
