Taylor Swift?s The Life of a Showgirl is out now. The good news is that Taylor is a stand-alone industry and a monoculture, which means that everyone has an opinion on her life and her music. On Thursday, leaks of TLOAS were being widely circulated online, and the Swifties were already in the trenches and fighting with everyone. The thing is, 90% of the music industry is in awe of Taylor and fearful of her enormous power. Which probably explains why even though early listeners of TLOAS are disappointed, the mainstream media?s reviews of the album are glowing and extremely positive. Variety and Rolling Stone led the way in praising the album and calling it yet another perfect classic. The Guardian?s critic was more honest, and this is the review getting much more play, some highlights:
There are albums for which vast success seems preordained, and then there is The Life of a Showgirl. The podcast on which Taylor Swift announced the release of her 12th studio album ? her fiance Travis Kelce?s ordinarily sports-focused New Heights ? garnered half a billion views, breaking a record set by Donald Trump?s appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience in the process. A ?launch event? film, featuring the kind of lyric videos and backstage footage that anyone else would release on YouTube, is instead set for a theatrical release in more than 100 countries: in the US alone, it sold $15m worth of tickets in 24 hours. The album itself has been pre-saved more than 5m times on Spotify, breaking another record in the process. ?I?m immortal now,? Swift sings on the title track, which seems less like an extravagant boast than a statement of fact.
In contrast to last year?s The Tortured Poets Department ? which by the time she?d finished releasing expanded editions and bonus tracks, was nearly two and half hours long ? it offers a crisp 12 songs in 40 minutes. Her recent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner are nowhere to be seen. Swift made The Life of a Showgirl in between Eras dates with Max Martin and Shellback, the Swedish duo who co-wrote and produced her most forthright pop bangers of the 2010s: Shake It Off, Blank Space, Don?t Blame Me, Bad Blood.
But anyone anticipating something similar from Showgirl is in for a shock: the fizzing electronic pop of Reputation and 1989 is conspicuously absent. Instead, its primary currency is breezy, easy-on-the-ear soft rock: acoustic guitars, misty synth tones, subtle orchestrations and breathy backing vocals. Wood?s laid-back take on disco recalls not the sweaty hedonism of the dancefloor but the late 70s moment where four-to-floor rhythms and chicken-scratch guitar temporarily invaded the oeuvres of west coast singer-songwriters.
More startling still is the distinct lack of undeniable hooks and nailed-on melodies. The songs are well turned, but in terms of genuinely memorable moments, Showgirl evinces just one killer chorus (Elizabeth Taylor), some impressively unexpected key changes on Wi$h Li$t and the authentically heart-tugging Ruin the Friendship, which finds Swift returning to her home town for the funeral of a high school boy she regrets not dating. There?s a fantastic chord sequence on Actually Romantic, but, alas, 37 years ago Frank Black wrote a very similar one for Where Is My Mind? by Pixies, a song you can literally sing along to Actually Romantic. The rest floats in one ear and out the other: not unpleasantly, but you might reasonably expect more given the amassed songwriting firepower behind it, and Swift?s claims of ?keeping the bar really high?.
Cancelled! deals with the Kim-and-Kanye-adjacent controversies that beset Swift in 2015 and 2016, and Father Figure concerns former label boss Scott Borchetta, both in needless-to-say-I-had-the-last-laugh style. There are some spiky lines here and there ? ?you made a deal with this devil / turns out my dick?s bigger? snaps Father Figure ? but they don?t really click. Perhaps that?s because Cancelled! and Father Figure revisit very well-trodden ground, while eviscerating a rival when you?re the world?s most successful pop star is, by default, punching down, even if she did apparently call you ?boring Barbie? behind your back.
Then there?s Wood, a song that, metaphorically speaking, drunkenly clambers on a table in Wetherspoons pub with a skew-whiff bridal veil on its head and an L-plate around its neck and favours everyone in earshot with a loud paean to the size of her fiance?s penis, which it variously describes as his ?magic wand?, his ?redwood tree? and his ?hard rock? (there is also a regrettable degree of punning on the word ?cocky?). Of course, Swift is perfectly entitled to write about whatever she wants, TMI or not, but there?s no escaping the fact that comparing her partner?s knob to a magic wand constitutes weak writing from someone who made her name, at least in part, by being a sharper, wittier, more incisive lyricist than her peers.
In fairness, Wood is one clanging misstep on an album that isn?t terrible: it?s just nowhere near as good as it should be given Swift?s talents, and it leaves you wondering why. Perhaps romantic contentment simply writes whiter than vengeful post-breakup bitterness, or perhaps it wobbles your judgment. Perhaps it was rushed. Or perhaps its author was just exhausted, which would be entirely understandable. Even the immortal, it seems, sometimes need to take a break from pop?s constant churn and unceasing clamour for content.

The fact that it?s not full of more revved-up songs is what surprised me, given the name of the album and Taylor?s return to working with Max Martin and Shellback. I was expecting upbeat pop bangers, and not? this. I also don?t understand Taylor?s need to churn out albums every year, especially when it certainly feels like she?s running out of good material. That?s the larger point though Taylor?s in such rarefied air, she believes/knows that her fans will buy every single song, every album, every variant she sells, regardless of quality. Every artist makes dumb songs very few artists release all of their dumb songs because they feel the need to churn out an annual album. Did you guys know that both Brittany and Patrick Mahomes are Virgos? That?s so interesting to me, you rarely see dual-Virgo marriages out in the wild, especially among celebrities. Brittany?s birthday is August 31, and Patrick?s b-day is September 17th. Taylor Swift went to some of Brittany?s b-day festivities in Nashville several weeks ago, and now it appears that Taylor went to a smallish birthday party for Patrick. This party happened on Sunday night, after the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs. Country singer Kane Brown was there, and he posted a photo of the Mahomeses along with Travis Kelce and Taylor. This was the only sighting of Taylor on Sunday, because even though she attended the Chiefs game, she hid behind a barrier on her way to the VIP box, and she also hid from broadcasters during the game. TMZ now says that Taylor hid away because of security issues, which is what I figured.
Taylor Swift snuck into a football stadium to watch her fianc Travis Kelce at work and it looks like she used a bullet-resistant portable shield to evade detection following Charlie Kirks very public murder. Swifties are running with an interesting theory online after Taylor kept an extremely low profile at Sundays game between Travis Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles her fans think she was behind a bulletproof barrier that was seen rolling through the bowels of Arrowhead Stadium in K.C.
We did some digging and it seems the barrier being used here is a bullet-resistant portable shield partition that retails for about $6,000.
Taylor usually makes high-profile arrivals to Arrowhead to watch Travis play with tons of video typically showing her making her way to her suite. That didnt happen Sunday and its unclear why she seemingly felt the need to sneak in behind a protective barrier. It will be interesting to see if Taylor keeps this up the screen may be bad luck though the Chiefs lost, 20-17, to drop to 0-2 on the season.

This isn?t the first time that Taylor?s security has had to turn on a dime because of some larger national issue. During her Eras Tour, she had to cancel her Vienna concerts because of a terrorist plot. The past week has been absolutely insane, and I would assume that Taylor?s private security is being inundated with credible threats. I actually wonder if Taylor is going to make a point of skipping Chiefs games for a little while, at least until things cool down.

Something really weird happened last night. While no one was paying any attention to the Emmys, football season was in full swing. The Eagles played the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, in a rematch of the Super Bowl earlier this year. The Eagles once again beat the Chiefs, and Travis Kelce is being blasted for screwing up a pass or something (I magically still don?t know anything about football). Travis was really upset, and he was screaming and throwing his helmet. People were really going in on him online.
So, that was weird, but so is this: Taylor Swift was allegedly there, but no one caught sight of her and there were no photos or cutaways to her during the game. For the past two football seasons, Taylor is a regular at games played at Arrowhead. She and her team work with Arrowhead security, and there?s almost always a little ?stroll? in one of the stadium?s corridors where a couple of photographers can get pics of her outfit. As I said, that?s been the case for two years. But this year, for the Chiefs? first home game of the season, Taylor didn?t do that. She apparently hid behind a screen on her way to the VIP box. Which? okay, maybe she didn?t feel like being photographed like that anymore. But they didn?t get any photos of her in the VIP box either?? What?s going on? People Mag swears that she was there, so I guess she just watched her fiance?s team lose from deep inside the VIP box.
People are immediately going with ?pregnant.? Possibly, but I think there?s a much better chance that this was completely about her security. Taylor showed up late, mid-game as well.

Ed Kelce gave yet another interview, this time to an Australian radio station. My God!! He?s just picking up the phone and spilling his guts to anyone, isn?t he?
Travis Kelce kept things traditional when it came to his proposal to fiance Taylor Swift. In an interview with Australian radio?s The Jimmy & Nath Show with Emma, Travis dad Ed Kelce revealed that his son asked Taylor?s dad, Scott Swift, for his blessing to marry his daughter a month ago.
I was talking to Scott Swift and Travis went to ask him for permission, and this was probably a month ago, and Scott said, Well come on, when are you going to get this done? Ed, 73 recalled. Ed said, like Scott, he?d been pressing Travis, 35, to propose to Taylor, also 35, and is happy his son finally popped the question.
?He didnt come to me for advice so much as I went to him to tell him, you know, ?To get this done,? ? the proud father recalled. ?Travis had these plans to do it the next weekend before flying out to Brazil [for a Kansas City Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5]. He was going to make a big production out of it some place, wanted to make it a bit special,? Ed continued. ?I told him the same thing Scott told him, ?Asking her is whats going to make it special.? It?s not where you do it. You know what I mean? You could do it on the side of the road. Scott adds, ?Just get it done. Don?t worry about any special date. Just, you?re ready, you got the ring, go do it.
Travis ended up listening to the advice of his dad and future father-in-law and proposed to Taylor in his garden, Ed shared, after revealing in an earlier interview with News 5s John Kosich that Travis had popped the question at home two weeks ago.
?They were going out to dinner and she was ready to go and he said, ?Let?s go out in the garden on the patio and have a glass of wine before we go,? ? he recalled on The Jimmy & Nath Show with Emma. ?I think she knew something was up because as they walked out there, she could see, suddenly, there were a lot more flowers out there.?
Sharing some further excitement about his sons engagement, Ed noted that hes never seen him quite so happy.?
?I think its wonderful,? Ed continued. ?These are two young people madly in love with each other and I think this is great.?

Scott Swift telling Travis to ?get it done? is so funny. The fathers were like ?are you crazy, JUST DO IT ALREADY.? At least both fathers understand that Taylor is a catch and Travis needed to lock it down ASAP. I also like that Travis did it in his own backyard, but he upgraded it with the flowers. I want to know Travis?s thought process there, because it was excellent. He really understands Taylor?s love languages.
What else? Page Six says that TNT are already planning their wedding and that it will likely be a ?private? ceremony with just close friends and family, and ?it will be more casual than people think.? They?re trying to dial down the ?America?s royal wedding? chatter. It?s also very likely that Taylor?s team will put together a prenup, but that?s just good business (for both of them, honestly). One of the reasons why I?ve always felt that Travis is good for Taylor isn?t just that has his own money, it?s that he?s incredibly established in his own career. While he?s had more offers because of his association with Taylor, he was already making millions. Page Six also says that Taylor and Travis are ?eyeing? a $18 million Ohio mansion for their next real estate purchase.

TMZ got the tip that Travis?s lock screen is NOT Taylor holding up an engagement ring.
Taylor Swift is wearing a ring in a photo that serves as Travis Kelces iPhone lock screen but its NOT an engagement ring despite what some folks are thinking. Sources connected to Travis tell TMZ the photo in question actually shows Taylor wearing Travis three Super Bowl rings.
Travis sent Swifties into a frenzy Thursday when the Kansas City Chiefs star posted Taylor on his Instagram for the first time and eagle-eyed fans clued in on the iPhone lock screen. Our sources say its NOT an engagement photo and Taylor and Travis are NOT engaged.
The rest of the carousels 13 photos Taylors favorite number feature the couple on a boat, in the snow, on an ice rink and in a grotto but the lock screen got the most attention online. Turns out, theres no slip-up here and Travis hasnt popped the question at least not yet.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are celebrating their two-year anniversary around this time. We don?t actually know when they first got together, but I assume it was probably in June/July 2023. Taylor and Trav have also been largely in the wind since the Super Bowl this year Travis has popped up at charity golf tournaments and various events, but he and Taylor have been vacationing and spending time together. They haven?t put their relationship online in any big way in two years only a couple of appearances on each other?s socials. Which is nice! Well, Travis decided to do a lovely photo dump on Thursday, and he included so many photos of Taylor!
Obviously, these photos have reignited all of the rumors of an engagement and more. In the photo above, where Taylor and Travis are both in black, you can see Travis?s phone and his lockscreen? and it appears his lockscreen is of himself and Taylor, with Taylor pointing to her left hand. I wouldn?t have noticed, but you know how forensic the Snake Fam is when it comes to this stuff. Would Taylor get engaged and not tell her fans? Yes. She would. I?m not saying that?s what has happened, but I wouldn?t be surprised! Anyway, these are some very cute photos. They seem genuinely happy together and genuinely in love.

There was another sighting of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce this week they were in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, which is close to Cleveland Heights (Travis?s hometown). They stopped in at JoJo?s Bar and a local news affiliate got a photo of them (I?m including the tweet at the end of the post). Travis was in Ohio to play at a charity golf tournament, and Taylor was there? to support him, I guess. Taylor really sees a different side of America with Travis. Before Travis, she spent most of her time in New York, Nashville, London and Rhode Island. Now she spends time in Boca, various Ohio suburbs, various Philly suburbs, Kansas City, etc. Anyway, Tay and Trav have largely been incognito for the past five months, ever since the Super Bowl. They?ve traveled and gone on multiple vacations and enjoyed being out of the spotlight. Sources tell People that this time has been transformative for their relationship:

Taylor Swift made a surprise public appearance in Nashville last night! Taylor and Travis Kelce walked hand-in-hand at the opening ceremony for Tight End University. You might think? gosh, that sounds filthy! But no, Travis is a football tight end, and he started ?TEU? as a multi-day ?training camp? for tight ends to bond and hang out. This is one of Travis?s things and his girlfriend came out to support him.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have made their red-carpet debut. The pop superstar and Kansas City Chiefs football player, both 35, walked hand-in-hand into the opening night ceremony for Tight End University in Nashville. Kelce founded the annual three-day summer training camp in 2021 with fellow NFL stars George Kittle and sportscaster Greg Olsen.
According to the events website, the camp was founded to help tight ends bond, collaborate with, and learn amongst their peers while participating in a variety of activities including film study, on-field drills, recovery, rehabilitation, and more.
A video posted by the Tight End University Instagram page shows the couple beaming as they walk a red carpet into the event. Swift was dressed in a green and white checkerboard top and a matching peplum skirt. Kelce complemented his girlfriends look in a white collared tee with yellow embellishments, matching shorts, and white sneakers.
In the comment section, fans couldnt help but point out that it was the first time the couple had walked a red carpet together. ?So, are we calling this their first red carpet but casual? one fan wrote.

That?s not all Taylor changed outfits and went on stage for an impromptu mini-concert at the TEU opening-night celebration. She performed ?Shake It Off? with a live band! Very cute. I don?t think she was scheduled to perform at all Chase Rice was the actual musical act, so I think Taylor ended up performing with Rice?s backing band.

In 2019, Scooter Braun?s Ithaca Holdings purchased all of the masters held/owned by Big Machine. Those masters included Taylor Swift?s first six albums. Swift was furious. Swift and her fans went to war with Braun for a while, and within a year of the sale, Braun off-loaded the Big Machine property to Shamrock Capital for a tidy profit. In the past six years, Taylor ended up taking Kelly Clarkson?s advice Clarkson randomly tossed off a tweet back in 2019, advising Taylor to rerecord those albums and ask the Swifties to buy the re-recordings. Taylor did just that, and the ?Taylor?s Version? re-rerecordings were massively successful too. Well, after all of that, Taylor has now bought back her masters for her first six albums. The dramatic announcement came on Friday:

The singer will be reissuing her old Big Machine albums, which were first sold by Big Machine against her wishes in 2019,. But now there will be two fully authorized versions of each of those albums in the marketplace, since she?s saying the re-recorded ?Taylor?s Versions? will continue to be available alongside the originals. Two of those bonus-filled editions have yet to come out, including the long-awaited ?Reputation (Taylor?s Version),? and her statement declares this deal won?t keep the remaining pair of do-overs from still being released.
News of a possible sale by Shamrock to Swift was first reported by the New York Post, but a source close to the negotiations disavowed elements of that story, saying the price tag reported was grossly inflated, and that there was no involvement of Scooter Braun. His Ithaca Holdings bought the catalog in 2019 before Shamrock acquired it from him a year later; he no longer participates in any profit from a sale, and Swift?s camp is adamant he had no part in Shamrock?s decision to sell.
Said the source close to the sale: ?Contrary to a previous false report, there was no outside party who ?encouraged? this sale. All rightful credit for this opportunity should go to the partners at Shamrock Capital and Taylor?s Nashville-based management team only. Taylor now owns all of her music, and this moment finally happened in spite of Scooter Braun, not because of him.?
The source added, ?The rumored price range that was reported is highly inaccurate.? While no price tag will be publicly forthcoming, insiders say the seller was interested in making a good-faith deal and the ultimate price was far closer to the $300 million Shamrock was reported to have paid in 2020 than the far more extravagant $600-million-to-$1 billion the Post hypothesized in its story.
Prior to this week, Swift fans were certain an announcement for ?Reputation (Taylor?s Version)? would be forthcoming on Memorial Day or thereabouts. But for those who still have that as their primary concern, the singer assured fans that her plans to reissue her original albums will not affect plans to put out the final two ?Taylor?s Version? editions, the other of which would be a new version of her debut album ? though she hedge a bit. Don?t expect the new ?Reputation? or ?Taylor Swift (Taylor?s Version)? any time soon, she cautioned in the note, even though songs from a partially re-recorded version of the former album have already been licensed for television (recently appearing in ?The Handmaid?s Tale?).
As she explains in her letter: ?I know, I know. What about Rep TV? Full transparency. I haven?t even re-recorded a quarter of it. The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it. All that defiance, that longing to be understood while Feeling purposely misunderstood, that desperate hope, that shame-born snarl and mischief. To be perfectly honest, it?s the one album in those first 6 that I thought couldn?t be improved upon by redoing it. Not the music, or photos, or videos. So I kept putting it off. There will be a time (if you?re into the idea) for the unreleased Vault tracks from that album to hatch. I?ve already completely re-recorded my album, and I really love how it sounds now. Those 2 albums can still have their moments to re-emerge when the time is right, if that would be something you guys would be excited about. But if it happens, it won?t be from a place of sadness and longing for what I wish I could have. It will just be a celebration now.?

Variety mentioned something which I didn?t know about the 2019 Big Machine sale not only did Taylor lose the rights to/ownership of her masters, she didn?t own the rights to her music videos, artwork and concert specials from that era. So now she has the rights to ALL of it, she owns all of it free and clear. As for the money? as Variety notes, their sources are saying that it was closer to $300 million. Page Six?s sources say the final figure was around $360 million. Which sounds like a lot, but consider this: she likely made around $2.5 billion just from the Eras Tour. So, she has the money and she used that money to buy her own work back. Good for her.
