In February 2014, Dylan Farrow wrote an op-ed for the New York Times about how Woody Allen, her father, had molested her when she was a child. This was not the first time most people had heard *something* about Dylan and the accusations, but to be fair, that was the first time Dylan ever came out as an adult and told her story. She did so by name-checking Cate Blanchett, who was then in the middle of what would be a successful Oscar campaign for Woody Allen?s Blue Jasmine. Blanchett swept up all of the awards, across the board, for her performance. And I tend to believe that will be the last Woody Allen film to ever win an Oscar.
While I believed Dylan then and I believe her now, I sort of thought (and I still think) that it?s possibly the wrong strategy to target the actresses who worked with Woody. By all means, ask the actors and actresses about why they chose to work with Woody overall, especially after February 2014. But Blanchett?s line remained the same: she had no clue about Dylan?s accusations when she worked with Woody, and clearly, she hasn?t done it since. Blanchett sat down with Christiane Amanpour recently and Amanpour asked her about Woody and Dylan.
Cate Blanchett sat down for an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour where she spoke of the man she worked with on Blue Jasmine?a film that ultimately earned her an Oscar win for Best Actress in 2014. “How do you juxtapose being a #MeToo proponent, a Time’s Up proponent, and staying silent or having worked with Woody Allen?” Amanpour asked the 48-year-old star.
In response to the question, Blanchett revealed, “I don’t think I’ve stayed silent at all. At the time that I worked with Woody Allen, I knew nothing of the allegations. At the time, I said it’s a very painful and complicated situation for the family, which I hope they have the ability to resolve? If these allegations need to be reexamined which, in my understanding, they’ve been through court, then I’m a big believer in the justice system and setting legal precedents. If the case needs to be reopened, I am absolutely, wholeheartedly in support of that.”
And while speaking on digital hashtags like #MeToo, the star made her opinion clear regarding platforms including Instagram and Twitter.
“Social media is fantastic about raising awareness about issues, but it’s not the judge and jury,” Blanchett said. “I feel that these things need to go into court, so if these abuses have happened, the person is prosecuted and so someone who is not in the shiny industry that I am can use that legal precedent to protect themselves,” Blanchett continued. “Always, in my industry or any other industry, they’re preyed upon because they’re vulnerable.”

Let?s take it point by point.
Re: ?If these allegations need to be reexamined which, in my understanding, they’ve been through court, then I’m a big believer in the justice system and setting legal precedents.? They didn?t go to court. The prosecutor didn?t want to traumatize Dylan any further, so he dropped it.
It?s not like Woody was ever charged with child molestation, put on trial and found not guilty. The way Cate incorrectly summarizes this is pissing me off. So she had never heard Dylan?s story before February 2014 – okay, I?ll believe Cate. But how can she have not, like, read a few articles about Dylan?s case in the years since then?
Re: ?Social media is fantastic about raising awareness about issues, but it’s not the judge and jury.? STOP SAYING THIS. No one is saying that someone should be found guilty of criminal charges based on a tweet. Literally no one is arguing that. #MeToo sprang up in part because women were tired of being disbelieved by the justice system, by lawyers, by the men in charge, by their bosses (some of whom were the abusers), etc. The argument of ?well if you want to call yourself a victim, then you better go to the cops and file a report? disregards just how disbelieved women have been historically. Now that being said, I understand the larger argument Cate is making, which is basically that telling your story in public and being believed is the first step, and now you should seek justice legally and criminally so that abusers will have to be penalized beyond ?needing to hire a crisis manager to weather a social media storm for six months.?

Cate Blanchett was honored at the InStyle Awards earlier this week. It seemed like a pretty down-market awards show for Blanchett, but then I remembered that she?s promoting Thor: Ragnarok, a film with mass-market appeal. She needs InStyle readers, not New York Times Style section readers! I don?t hate that, by the way – some would say that Cate is ?selling out? by working on a Marvel movie, but Cate has never talked sh-t about studio films or big-budget films. She?s always moved back and forth between indie films and big budget productions, and her kids are probably at an age where she wanted to do a movie that they could see.
Anyway, Cate gave a speech when she received the ?Style Icon? Award. She used that moment to give a lesson in sexual politics and Steve Bannon, saying:
True icons of style, she said, are “women who know how they look is not all of who they are, but just an extension of that. It’s about women who feel free to wear what they want, when they want and how they want to wear it. I mean, you know we all like looking sexy but it doesn’t mean we want to f–k you. No one says to Steve Bannon: ‘You look like a bag of trash, do you want want me to throw you out?’ But the comments that get said about what women wear on the red carpet? I mean, if you troll through those trolls on the Internet ? just don’t.”

I?m including the video below. While it may seem like Cate is making an incredibly obvious point, it?s absolutely worth making that point because in Peak 2017, people are still blaming victims. Victims are blamed for what they were wearing, how they were standing, why they were even in the room. There?s also the ?not that kind of girl? thing that women attack other women for: dressing ?slutty? or not being ashamed of showing off their bodies. It?s worth repeating: many women like to look sexy, and want to be thought of as sexy and beautiful. None of that is an invitation for sexual harassment or assault.

Here are some photos from last night?s InStyle Awards in LA. I didn?t know this event was happening, and I saw these photos very late. I chuckled a few times as I was going through them too – many women in attendance just wore boring little-black-dress uniforms, so I?m not going to talk about them. But there were some notable attendees, and some notably bad looks, so here we go. Let?s start with Cate Blanchett in Givenchy. Does this look like a repurposed circus tent? Yes, it does. Does it also sort of work on Blanchett specifically? Yes, it does. What can I say? Blanchett knows how to wear questionable looks well. The lipstick and shoe choices bring everything together.
Elle Fanning in Versace. Oh, God. The dress itself is rather cute and fun, but Elle?s hair and makeup are SO BAD.
Zendaya in Schiaparelli Fall 2017 Couture. I love this look completely. At first I was like ?I?m not so sure about the hair with this dress,? but it grew on me very quickly. She?s going for a Pam Grier-?70s look and it works.
Selena Gomez in Jacquemus dress. Boring. Nothingburger.
Bella Heathcote in Rosie Assoulin. This is? strange. Very strange.
Kate Bosworth in Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2018. I actually like the dress – it?s striking and interesting – but her styling is awful. Whoever told her to wear her hair slicked down with a center part is trolling her. She looks like she?s going in for a role as a Disney villain.

I always thought that Cate Blanchett?s style would gracefully transition into more classic looks, moving into more ?establishment? gowns from Armani and those kinds of designers. It?s sort of remarkable how wrong I was – if anything, Cate?s style is getting crazier every year. Cate wore this rather *interesting* Gucci dress to last night?s Thor: Ragnarok premiere in LA. Cate plays the villain, the first female villain in a Marvel movie, and Cate came to play. It?s actually really smart and fun – Marvel movies can be total sausage parties, and the handful of women involved are usually total bores when it comes to premiere fashion. Not Cate. Cate came to the red carpet to take all of the attention. Good for her. As for the actual dress? it?s unique! Special.
Since I can?t go five minutes this week without writing the name ?Harvey Weinstein,? here you go: Cate Blanchett issued a statement about Harvey Weinstein. Cate was never billed as ?the First Lady of Miramax? like Gwyneth Paltrow, but Weinstein did produce and promote many of Cate?s movies, like Carol, The Aviator (where she won an Oscar), The Talented Mr. Ripley and more. Cate doesn?t get personal, doesn?t say whether she had any knowledge of or first-hand experience with Weinstein?s perversions and predations. This is her statement:
?Any man in a position of power or authority who thinks it?s his prerogative to threaten, intimidate or sexually assault any woman he encounters or works alongside needs to be called to account. It is never easy for a woman to come forward in such situations and I wholeheartedly support those who have.?

At this point, we?re getting more boilerplate statements of support from celebrity men and women, and this is pretty much the least she could do or say in her position. I don?t judge her for that, and I don?t expect her to share what she knew or what she saw. It?s become pretty clear that Harvey?s predatory behavior knew no bounds and it’s every woman’s right to speak or not speak about what happened or didn’t happen.

Cate Blanchett met Andrew Upton back in the 1990s. She always said that they had an instant connection, and she knew within a few weeks of knowing him that they would get married. They did get married and they are now the parents of four children: Dashiell John, Roman Robert, Ignatius Martin and their youngest, a daughter named Edith Vivian Patricia (they adopted Edith in 2015). I always thought Cate and Andrew?s marriage was totally solid. They never seemed to have any drama, and they worked together constantly, especially when they took over the Sydney Theatre Company for several years.
Last year, they moved to America on what seemed like a temporary basis. I suspected that Cate wanted to work more in film for a few years. They still keep a home in Sydney, and it seems that Andrew has been spending time at the Sydney home while Cate and the children are in America. And more than a week ago, a paparazzo got some photos of Andrew looking especially cozy with a young actress:

Paris Fashion Week has been a snooze so far. I think July PFWs are usually poorly attended? Most people want to go in the spring or fall, not in the dead of summer. But there has been a small assortment of celebrity sightings, so I thought I would gather up some of the best photos in one post. This is Cate Blanchett at Armani yesterday. Cate is one of the faces of Armani, she represents an Armani fragrance. Plus, she simply has a years-long relationship with the label. Cate obviously got one of the best looks from the collection ? this jumpsuit is pretty amazing.
Jessica Chastain at Chanel a few days ago ? I like this on her. It might look trashy on another woman, but she makes it look sophisticated.
Here?s Gabriel Day-Lewis, son of Daniel Day-Lewis. Gabe is a professional model these days. He has the height, absolutely, but is he someone you enjoy seeing?
Soko at the Vogue Foundation Gala 2016 a few days ago. Why does she wear Pink eye makeup? And this dress is awful.
Zoe Kravitz at the Valentino show yesterday ? she looks so much like her mother, I had to recheck the photo ID to make sure it wasn?t Lisa Bonet.

Cate Blanchett is a BIG theater person, having run the Sydney Theatre Company for many years. She got her start in Australia?s theater community, and she?s been on Broadway and on the London stage before. Cate came out for last night?s Tony Awards in this Louis Vuitton look which makes me sad. She loves experimental fashion, she loves ?difficult? looks, but this is one of those rare times when she doesn?t really pull it off. This Vuitton makes me sad for Cate?s boobs. Those sad cups! And this just isn?t flattering on her at all. From the neck up, she looks great though.
Michelle Williams also wore Louis Vuitton ? this is sort of simple and flattering. I like her styling too, especially the deep red lipstick. And her date for the Tonys was her BFF Busy Phillips!
Anna Wintour and her daughter came out for the Tonys. Anna wore Schiaparelli and Bee Schaffer wore Erdem. I like Wintour?s look a lot more, but I really think they should have coordinated their looks a bit so their prints wouldn?t clash.
Diane Lane in a zebra-print jumpsuit, just because. I love Lane and this ?70s-housewife style is amazing to me.
Lena Hall in Zac Posen. Love it! She?s so tall and elegant.
Jourdan Dunn in Zac Posen. I love the color, but Posen?s designs are so overworked.

Before Cate Blanchett came onto the red carpet, I thought Saoirse Ronan was going to be my favorite dress. Then Blanchett walked out on the carpet with THIS DRAMA. This custom-made, seafoam green Armani is absolutely perfect? on Cate. I think I might have had a problem with this on someone else, but with Cate?s height, her figure, her coloring, this was as close to perfect as we?re ever going to get. The Armani photographs well, it moved well, and it looked amazing on stage as she presented too. I think she knew well enough that she wasn?t going to win another Oscar, so she just came out to have fun, pick up her crazy Oscar swag bag, party with Leo and win the red carpet.
Also in Armani? Another Best Actress nominee, Charlotte Rampling. Controversies aside, I think she?s a very elegant woman and this dress is totally fine. The lilac shoes though? No.
Note by Celebitchy: This is Naomi Watts in Fall 2015 Armani. On the E! Red Carpet discussion they said that she had two dresses picked out and that Liev helped her decide on this one. This was probably my favorite dress of the entire night, it’s dramatic, it fits her like a glove and the color and fishtail pattern along the skirt are amazing. Kaiser thought it was 80s and dated but I just found it very striking. She has on Bulgari jewels.

I feel like Cate Blanchett?s Independent Spirit Awards look bodes well for the Oscars. This Gucci makes it seem like she?s in a playful, fun mood. And why wouldn?t she be? She?s got two Oscars, she knows she?s not going to win this year and she can just go and have fun. So why not have a great time and wear this crazy Gucci gown to the Spirits? Right? I mean, I would LOATHE this on anyone else. But on Cate, it almost looks elegant instead of cuckoo-bird cray-cray. Speaking of birds? yes, that is a very fancy peacock on her dress. SO FANCY.
Cate was also in on the joke when the Spirit Awards hosts ? Kate McKinnon & Kumail Nanjiani ? did an absolutely amazing spoof of Carol. After this bit aired, Cate was seen crying from laughter, she thought it was so funny. ?Clandestine glove lunch? is the new thing. It?s a seduction!
As for Cate?s partner-on-crime, Rooney Mara, she wore Hugo Boss. And she looked like a sad mime. No no no! I actually think this Hugo Boss dress is totally fine, albeit slightly boring. At least it wasn?t another f?king nude gown! What?s tragic here is her hair. Ugh, so dour.

Here are some photos from last night?s Costume Designers Guild Awards, which always seems like a fun night. Every year, actors and actresses come out to celebrate the costume designers who make them look amazing in films. And considering the 1950s drama Carol and the exquisite costumes in that film, Cate Blanchett came out to celebrate. Cate wore this stunning Atelier Versace which I HOPE HOPE HOPE is a preview of what we?ll see from her at the Oscars. Please let her gown be awesome. PLEASE. I always love it when Cate does slinky ?she never looks trashy, always sophisticated.
Here?s Emily Ratajkowski in Andrew Gn. I?m sort of over ruffles, tiers and fringe, and this is an unholy alliance of all of that. Also: she should have worn her hair up.
Krysten Ritter in in Lela Rose? this is an absolutely terrible thing to do to a pale brunette. When will this nude-pantyhose-fabric die already?
Kate Beckinsale in Hamel. She looks lovely, but she looks the same as always. I would love to see her mix it up a bit with some more avant-garde styles.
Kiernan Shipka in McQueen. I love her, I love this dress on her, everything is perfect.
Jennifer Jason Leigh in Rodarte. I actually hope this is a preview of her Oscar look too, because this is maybe my favorite thing she?s worn during this whole Oscar season.
