Tom Hanks is publishing his first novel next year, inspired by his Hollywood experience
I wonder if Tom Hanks gets tired of being talented. Tom, who already has a best-selling collection of short stories titled Uncommon Type, is releasing his first book next year. And get this, it?s not a memoir, it?s a novel called The Making of Another Major Motion Picture. As much as I want to be cautious about an actor writing fiction, we know Tom?s a great storyteller and this story sounds amazing. Mainly because he?s following the number one rule in writing: write what you know. The story, in broad terms, is about how a movie is made. It starts with a boy?s love of comic books, goes through all of life?s events and several decades that get to a person who casts and produces a major production superhero film, detailing all the causalities along the way. I want to buy this thing and it hasnt even been printed yet.

The two-time Oscar winner wrote his first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, out May 9, 2023, about the movie business and the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film and the humble comic book that inspired it, per an official synopsis.

(Tom) Hanks, 66, tells PEOPLE that the plot draws from his personal Hollywood experiences.

Every character in the book does something Ive experienced while making a movie, as well as discovered a philosophy or learned an important lesson. Even the foolish moments are some kind of stunt Ive pulled or mistake Ive survived, he says.

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece spans several decades and showcases American culture has changed since World War II. One portion is set in 1947, about a soldier returning home from war who leaves a lasting impression on his talented 5-year-old nephew. That boy grows up to draw comic books in 1970, making his uncle into one of his characters.

Then, in present day, a director decides to adapt that comic book into a big-budget superhero movie. The books characters include an extremely difficult male actor and a wonderful leading lady actress, plus an eccentric director, producer, production assistant and more quirky crew members.

[From People]

The book will also include original comic books written by Tom and illustrated by Robert Sikoryak. Of course it will, because who doesn?t write the off comic book in their spare time? I love the idea of this story for two reasons. The first is because it?s Tom?s love letter to filmmaking. Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Bill Evans and many others did projects attempting to explain why filmmaking and storytelling are so deeply important to them. I think people forget that films are a passion for those making them because the politics and the underbelly of the film industry taint so much of our impression. The second reason I appreciate this angle is because Tom is using a comic book to superhero model. The spectacle of Marvel and DC have overshadowed how old some of those origin stories were. Anyway, I?m sure this will be a wonderful book and a huge success. And, as always, it couldn?t happen to a nicer guy.

Small side-step but I watched the Baz Luhrmann Elvis movie finally. I?m a Luhrmann fan, first off, and most people I know didn?t like the film, so I went in with low expectations. However, I enjoyed it. I never stopped seeing Tom in Col. Parker, though. Everyone else I saw their character, but I always felt I was looking at Tom Hanks with a weird accent and The Penguin?s nose. Although he still got me to hate him and it?s hard to hate Tom, so he did his job. I really don?t have enough superlatives for Austin Butler, though. He completely became his character, even changed the way he moved as Elvis aged. And he and Tom together were great.

Tom Hanks: 'Violence is glamorous & gorgeous. But it's cynical, and I?m not a cynic'
If you have twenty minutes, I would absolutely suggest reading Tom Hanks?s wonderful interview in the New York Times. The NYT published it several days ago and it is a long-read full of delightful stories about Hanks?s films, his career choices, American nostalgia, nostalgia for old Hollywood and tons more. Some of Tom?s quotes are making the rounds and I just thought the piece deserved to be covered. Hanks is currently promoting Baz Luhrmann?s Elvis, where Tom plays Col. Tom Parker, Elvis?s longtime manager/Svengali. Some highlights:

On his nostalgia for mid-20th century America, but not the politics of that era. ?That?s such a loathsome argument: ?Back in my day.? Those days were [expletive] up! ?Oh, the ?50s were this carefree time.? Excuse me, no, they were not. How come things aren?t the way they were? You mean when you were comfortable? Institutions were gaming the system in order to maintain the status quo! That has always been the case except for when some redefinition of our institutions comes along out of a public outcry because the status quo isn?t fair.?

He?s fascinated by the incremental changes: ?I don?t know if I?m answering your question but ?There?s Hanks, he?s got a nostalgia for the way America used to be?: No. I have a fascination with the progress that America has made in all these incremental moments. That is an American sense of what is right and what is wrong. What I don?t do, if I can continue on, I?m not cynical. Cynicism is a default position in an awful lot of entertainment. How many knockoff versions of ?Chinatown? have you seen? Eight million. The conflict of cynicism is glamorous, gorgeous. Violence is glamorous and gorgeous. But it?s cynical, and I?m not a cynic.

Whether his Dan Brown movies were cynical: ?Oh, God, that was a commercial enterprise. Yeah, those Robert Langdon sequels are hooey. ?The Da Vinci Code? was hooey. I mean, Dan Brown, God bless him, says, Here is a sculpture in a place in Paris! No, it?s way over there. See how a cross is formed on a map? Well, it?s sort of a cross. Those are delightful scavenger hunts that are about as accurate to history as the James Bond movies are to espionage. But they?re as cynical as a crossword puzzle. All we were doing is promising a diversion. There?s nothing wrong with good commerce, provided it is good commerce. By the time we made the third one, we proved that it wasn?t such good commerce. Let me tell you something else about ?The Da Vinci Code.? It was my 40th-something birthday. We were shooting in the Louvre at night. I changed my pants in front of the Mona Lisa! They brought me a birthday cake in the Grand Salon! Who gets to have that experience? Any cynicism there? Hell no!

Whether his sense of American exceptionalism has been shaken in recent years: ?Look, there?s plenty of reason to be demoralized. Goodness is not a constant, and the good fight is not always fought, but there is a strength and a resiliency and an eventuality to vox populi. There are events that shake up those Americans who still believe there is a right way to do things. It?s the Peter Finch moment: I?m mad as hell and I?m not going to take it anymore. Now, a certain administration came down the pike, and the people who were screaming seemed to rule the day. Why? Because the people who cared about what?s right didn?t show up. Well, something egregious enough comes along, and guess what? People will show up. But their cages have to be rattled. We might be experiencing that right now. The problem, of course, is that technology has shifted so that truth has no currency. That is only going to be altered when enough people say, ?[Expletive] that, I?m not going to pay any attention to social media ever again.?

[From The NYT]

I haven?t seen the other Dan Brown adaptations, but I saw The Da Vinci Code and I genuinely enjoyed it. It?s just? a modern adventure story. That?s all. There?s suspense and history and it?s fun. That movie is perfectly enjoyable. But yeah, maybe the sequels were unnecessary, although I get why they were made. The Da Vinci Code made $760 million at the box office. Of course they made sequels.

As for what he says about cynicism, American exceptionalism and the good fight? I appreciate that he acknowledges that people are demoralized. But no, I don?t have faith that enough ?good people? will come together when something egregious happens. I just don?t. Is that cynical? Or just realistic?

Tom Hanks to host inauguration special with performances by Demi Lovato, Bon Jovi
We are less than a week away from the inauguration of our 46th President of the United States of America. On January 20th, Joseph R. Biden will swear his oath. My gawd, will we make it until then? I know we will. And it?s historic for so many reasons. Even if we set the traitorous uprising aside (which we can?t), we will swear in our first female vice-president, our first Black-Indian vice president and the first inauguration to take place while most of the country is in lockdown due to a virus. Not to mention it means the end of the term of one of if not the worst president in our history. It?s a bigger deal now because DC is taking unprecedented safety measures, with public monuments being closed as a security risk and companies like Airbnb cancelling all reservations and returning deposits for those dates since they can?t properly vet the renters. Because of the uncertainty with both the pandemic and the very recent insurrection, many of the inaugural events will look different this year. In addition to a virtual parade, the Biden team has orchestrated a Primetime special for the evening of the Inauguration. In lieu of at least one of the balls that would have normally taken place, a bevy of Hollywood stars and recording artists will perform to celebrate the event. And it will be hosted by none other than America?s Dad, Tom Hanks.

The unprecedented inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will feature a Jan. 20 primetime TV special hosted by Tom Hanks, following a day of ceremonies, in what the inaugural team is calling a capstone to showcase the American peoples resilience, heroism, and unified commitment to coming together.

The 90-minute program will air on the major broadcast and cable news networks, except for Fox, who is streaming it instead, according to a news release from the inauguration team.

The special will include speeches by both President-elect Biden, 78, and Vice President-elect Harris, 56, as well as celebrity performances.

Ant Clemons, Jon Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato and Justin Timberlake will all perform. Clemons and Timberlake will sing their Better Days, which they wrote.

Bidens inaugural team said the special will highlight the strength of our democracy, the perseverance of our people, and our ability to come together during trying times and emerge stronger than ever before.

The program will celebrate American heroes who are helping their fellow Americans through this crisis, including frontline workers, health care workers, teachers, citizens giving back, and those who are breaking barriers, organizers said in the news release.

The Hanks-hosted TV special will air at night, after Biden and Harris participate in a military ceremony and Biden attends a wreath-laying with other former presidents.

[From People via Just Jared]

Of course Fox is sitting this one out. It is appropriate that Hanks is hosting. Hanks, of course, is the safe choice and I?m sure it will all feel like a big hug. I have no interest in watching Justin Timberlake do anything. Honestly, I can?t say I?m really that amped about this special at all. I have nothing against it, I appreciate the team is working with what they have. And I applaud them for not making any selfish choices that involve in-person events. I hope we get a firework display somewhere but I guess that?s a gathering risk too, so I can wait.

I will tune in for Biden and Harris? speeches, though. Hearing them make promises once in power will be the real warm blanket I need. The image I can?t wait for is when they take the oath and swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. I fantasize about that moment, when those words are spoken and the 45th administration is done, over, finished. Here?s to the 46th.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were granted Greek citizenship: jealous?
With the way America is going these days, many of us are daydreaming about escaping to a beautiful island surrounded by azure waters and good food. If you are a celebrity who does good things for a nation, you too could be granted dual citizenship.

As someone who is always trying to find ways to get another citizenship someplace where life is more simple, it warmed my cold jealous heart to see that Tom Hanks and his Greek-American wife Rita Wilson became official citizens of Greece last year. It was announced by Prime Minister Mitsotakis on his Instagram on Sunday.

I know youre think its because they are privileged with a lot of money. That may be true but they actually received this beautiful gift because of a good deed they did for Greece in 2018. Tom and Rita have been visiting Greece annually for over twenty years. They even bought property on the island of Antiparos. In 2018 they helped raise global awareness and relief after a deadly wildfire near Athens killed 100 people. CNN reports:

In a picture posted on social media by the countrys prime minister, the two proudly hold up their brand new passports.

The couple and their children became honorary Greek citizens last year after officials highlighted Hanks role in helping raise awareness about the 2018 fires that devastated areas near Athens and claimed the lives of more than 100 people.

Tom Hanks is a person who showed real interest in the people who suffered from the fire in Mati and promoted this issue in the global media, Greek Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos told CNN in a statement in December.

Wilson, who is part Greek, and Hanks, a Greek Orthodox convert, have often been spotted spending their vacations in Greece, where they also own property on the island of Antiparos.

The two have produced several films based on the Greek community and never shy away from sharing their admiration for the country and its people.

[From CNN]

I cant keep the jealousy in my heart for long because Tom and his wife continue to show the world what wonderful people they are. Its also lovely to see that doing good deeds does not go unnoticed. And to be fair, they gave us My Big Fat Greek Wedding (Hanks company produced it) and that alone should have been rewarded with permanent citizenship in Greece.

I will continue to daydream about that expat, dual citizenship life while I plug away at whatever job I have. Maybe Ill send Rita and Tom a letter asking them to adopt me. In the meantime, Ill watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding on repeat while eating tzatziki and baklava.

Tom Hanks on movies: 'you want to see something you?ve never seen before'
Tom Hanks is promoting his Clint Eastwood directed film, Sully, about Capt. Chesley Sullenberger who successfully landed his plane on the Hudson River. It opens this Friday and looks good. The part seems to call for all the conflict, gravitas and depth that Hanks can bring to these roles.

While being interviewed about Sully at the Telluride Film Festival, Eastwood spoke to wanting to do more original content after which Hanks interrupted his own interview to proclaim the brilliance of Damien Chazelle?s new film La La Land, which had been shown the day before. Hank’s remarks were part trumpeting the film’s brilliance and imploring support for original content.

?I like to think we approach movies the same way we approach being members of the audience in that you just want to see something you have never seen before. It?s funny. Who saw La La Land yesterday?? Hanks said as members of the audience clapped in response. ?When you see something that is brand new, that you can?t imagine, and you think, ?Well, thank God this landed,? because I think a movie like La La Land would be anathema to studios. Number one, it is a musical and no one knows the songs.?

Hanks then made a quip about Warner Bros., the studio distributing Sully, likely being thrilled that he interrupted an event for the film to praise another studio?s movie before elaborating on his initial sentiment.

?This is not a movie that falls into some sort of trend. I think it is going to be a test of the broader national audience, because it has none of the things that major studios want,? he said. ?Pre-awareness is a big thing they want, which is why a lot of remakes are going on. [La La Land] is not a sequel, nobody knows who the characters are?But if the audience doesn?t go and embrace something as wonderful as this then we are all doomed.?

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Only Tom Hanks could get away with pausing a Warner Bros. press interview to promote a Lionsgate film. Technically Hanks was just citing an example of what Eastwood had discussed but most outlets are running with the narrative that he encapsulated our frustration for unique content. However, Sully is original in that this story has not been made into a film before (the film is adapted from Sullenberger?s autobiography, Sully: My Search for What Really Matters). And yet Hanks didn’t cite it for it’s originality because let’s face it, a conflicted-hero story is not exactly foreign in Hollywood. I think Hanks was hyped about a very different type of film but I also think he was reminding the movie-goers to put their money where their mouths are. Most indy films make their way to my neck of the woods. I don’t go see half the ones I should but I complain about the “same old thing” all the time.

However much we claim to dislike remakes we do love reunions. Such was almost the case yesterday on Good Morning America when both Tom and Meg Ryan were promoting their films (she is promoting Ithaca, in which Hanks has a cameo). Alas, they were not in the same place at the same time – Tom saw Meg outside the window and yelled “I love you sweetie! I?ll find you. I?ll wait for you. I?ll meet you in the park.” He also pointed out the Bubba Gump Shrimp company restaurant in the background and said that in 1977 it was a bank where he had to cash a $47 check. “I wish I could have said ‘Hey, this is going to be a restaurant based on my movie.’” Tom then invited everyone for free appetizers.

Does Brad Pitt pull off WWII-era Oscar-bait in the new footage from 'Fury?'
Brad Pitt spent most of last Fall in England filming the World War II movie Fury. Personally, I?m kind of ?over? Hollywood?s insistence on making WWII films and glorifying that historical era, but just when I think that, I get caught up in a Band of Brothers marathon and I?m thinking, ?I wish they would make more stuff like this.? Seriously, Band of Brothers is amazing. One of the best miniseries ever.

Anyway, it really seemed like the production of Fury dragged on and on ? for the first time ever, Brad and Angelina were working on separate continents for months while she filmed Unbroken in Australia, and it seemed like that wasn?t supposed to be the plan. I kind of wondered if Fury was a mess, that we were going to get a repeat of the clusterwhoops that went down during World War Z?s production, and whether Pitt could weather another storm like that. So? I guess I?m glad to see that Fury seems to have come together reasonably well in post-production. Sony just revealed the first footage from Fury at the LA gaming expo E3.

It looks good. A character study set in WWII? Sure. The set up seems to be a bit like Saving Private Ryan, only they?re not searching for Private Ryan, they?re just fighting in the war. I guess that would make Brad the Tom Hanks character? And I?m fine with that. Brad does look good in fatigues and he?s a better actor than most people think. Will The Beef be the weak link? You never know. Also: LOVE Michael Pena.

Fury will be released on November 14th. Oscar contender?

Making the rounds to promote his new movie, Tom Hanks attended the European premiere of "Captain Phillips" at the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday (October 9).

The "Forrest Gump" star wore a double-breasted black tuxedo as his lovely wife Rita Wilson posed by his side on the red carpet.

Based on a true story, the drama follows the title character as his American cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.

While talking about the movie, Tom revealed on the "Late Show with David Letterman" that he has type 2 diabetes. However, he took to Twitter on Tuesday to assure fans, "Yep, I have #2 diabetes. Type 1 is VERY SERIOUS! Type 2 I can manage with good habits. I shall! Hanx"
