I believe Dolly Parton is a national treasure. And it?s amazing to me that she?s still so cool, even after 50 years in the business. I think that?s because Dolly has always been an iconoclast. She?s always been ahead of the curve. She thinks for herself and takes care of her business. Dolly has a new interview with Billboard which is just? amazing. Classic Dolly. You can read the full thing here. She?s never heard of Lean In. She loves her LGBT fans. She even gives some investment advice! Some highlights:
Billboard: How are you different now from the girl who came to Nashville in 1964?
Dolly: I’m more successful now than I was then, but I still feel like the same girl. I’m just a working girl. I never think of myself as a star because, as somebody once said, “A star is nothing but a big ball of gas” — and I don’t want to be that.
Dollywood attracts lots of church groups, but it has also become a draw for the LGBT community. What does that say about you?
It’s a place for entertainment, a place for all families, period. It’s for all that. But as far as the Christians, if people want to pass judgment, they’re already sinning. The sin of judging is just as bad as any other sin they might say somebody else is committing. I try to love everybody.
You have a large gay following. To what do you attribute that?
They know that I completely love and accept them, as I do all people. I’ve struggled enough in my life to be appreciated and understood. I’ve had to go against all kinds of people through the years just to be myself. I think everybody should be allowed to be who they are, and to love who they love. I don’t think we should be judgmental. Lord, I’ve got enough problems of my own to pass judgment on somebody else.
As a Southern woman, how do you speak your mind and take care of business but remain likable?
I’m open and I’m honest. I don’t dillydally. If there’s something going on, I just say it. Sometimes if I get mad, I’ll throw out a few cuss words just to prove my point. I’ve often said I don’t lose my temper as much as I use it. I don’t do either unless I have to because I love peace and harmony, but when you step in my territory, I will call you on it. People say, “Oh, you just always seem so happy.” Well, that’s the Botox. (Laughs.)
How many houses?
We have a place in [Los Angeles] and a couple places here [in Tennessee]: on the lake, then we have the office complex, and I have the old [East Tennessee] place up home. It’s investments. It’s not to say, “Hey, look at me.” I’d rather buy property than play the stock market.

She also talks about dressing to look ?easy? and how men always underestimated her because of how she looked, but that?s fine because she?s always made all the money. I love what she says about the LGBT community and her fans ? she?s just such a cool lady.

I love Dolly Parton. Don?t lie, you love her too. She?s sassy, she?s smart, she?s fierce, she?s kind and she can get away with anything. So you?ll totally love her new interview with Southern Living ? go here to read the full piece, which I would totally recommend. Dolly is 68 years young and she?s still involved with so many projects! I think she did this interview to promote her new resort, DreamMore, which is a Southern-style resort/hotel experience. Details from the interview? she?s always ten minutes early because she?s perfect. She loves porches and rocking chairs. She rolls up in a champagne-colored Escalade. Here are some other highlights from the piece:
Whether she considers herself a ?hillbilly?: ?Well, it?s a compliment to me. I mean we were really Hill. Billies. To me that?s not an insult. We were just mountain people. We were really redneck, roughneck, hillbilly people. And I?m proud of it. ?White trash!? I am. People always say ?Aren?t you insulted when people call you white trash?? I say, ?Well it depends on who?s calling me white trash and how they mean it.? But we really were to some degree. Because when you?re that poor and you?re not educated, you fall in those categories. But I?m proud of my hillbilly, white trash background. To me that keeps you humble; that keeps you good. And it doesn?t matter how hard you try to outrun it?if that?s who you are, that?s who you are. It?ll show up once in a while.?
Her optimism: ?Just being grateful for the things that happen to [me]. I think that also came from my childhood?my grandfather was a preacher?just having God, faith, and all that instilled in us. But I like to make things happen if they?re not happening. I like to get involved. So I like to think of myself as a Girl of Many Colors, not just a coat, because I have all kinds of moods and I experience them all. I think that?s what makes a human being. People always say ?You seem to always be so happy.? But I?m not always happy. Nobody is happy all the time. I?m a very sensitive person. I?m a songwriter, so I have to live with my feelings on my sleeve. I have to not harden my heart, because I want to stay open to feel things. So when I hurt, I hurt all over. And when I cry, I cry real hard. And when I?m mad, I?m mad all over. I?m just a person; I like to experience whatever the feeling is and whatever I?m going through. But I have a good attitude. And I was born with a happy heart. I?m always looking for things to be better.?
She based her look on ?the town trollop?: ?That?s not a joke. That?s the honest truth. But it fits my personality too. I was not a natural beauty, and I always wanted to be pretty. I just have such an outgoing personality that it?s fitting that I would be overdone.?
Admitting she has plastic surgery: ?Well, I never would have said I did it if I hadn?t got caught at it. But I wasn?t gonna lie about it! So then after I got caught and I didn?t lie about it, people started asking me [more often]. And I thought, ?Well, you know, what the hell?? After so much time, after you get older, it can help people. I?m not being the poster child for any of that, but people know you do it.?
She?s happy being a godmother rather than a mother: ?I feel more like a godmother, like a fairy godmother, than I do like a real mother. I think probably I make a better godmother and an aunt than I would a mother because I was always so involved in my own things. I probably would have been like my sisters and my mom. I probably would have given up my dreams for that. But I guess God has His reasons for doing things. I really am a great aunt. And I really love kids. I love the energy of children. It makes me feel young. I?m just drawn to them. They?re like magic to me. And they?re drawn to me, the childlike part of me that never did grow up. I look kinda cartoonish, and look like a Mother Goose or a Cinderella or a Fairy Godmother?kids kinda respond to that. Almost like a cartoon. And my voice is small. My energy is like that. I think it just works.?

I like what she says about motherhood and how she would have had to choose between her career and her kids. I mean, she?s 68. That?s generational. Most women at that time would have gotten married and had kids and not been one of the great musical talents of their generation. As for the rest of it? am I the only one genuinely moved by Dolly? On Monday she appeared on a previously-taped episode of "The Queen Latifah Show" where she rapped and twerked, but on that same day, Dolly Parton got into a car accident in Nashville (October 21).
While being driven by friend Judy Ogle, a vehicle struck their car, sending the country crooner to the hospital, according to TMZ.
Reportedly, Ogle was not hurt and Dolly was released with only minor injuries. The 67-year-old living legend later assured fans, tweeting, "I was in a fender bender this morning here in Nashville, but I am all good... Just a little tired and sore. Resting at home now!"

Normally at home in the world of country music, Dolly Parton tried her hand at rapping on "The Queen Latifah Show" airing Monday (October 21).
Introduced as "straight outta the 'ville" (Nashville), the 67-year-old star beings with "Hey Ho!," before explaining, "I ain't calling anybody names, I'm just sayin' howdy."
Referencing her legendary chest, she continues, "Now I don't hip and I don't hop, I'd black both eyes with this big top, I know the Queen has got 'em too but she don't work 'em like I do."
Calling out one of her much-younger musical colleagues, Dolly quips, "Hey Miley, I got your wrecking balls right here." Check out a preview of her appearance in the video below.

Country music icon Dolly Parton graced the red carpet at the premiere of her new movie with Queen Latifah, “Joyful Noise,” a flick that promises to have plenty of oh-no-she-di-int sassiness and various odd couple/fish-out-of-water hijinx. Add after all these years, Dolly Parton’s still got it. “It” of course being “a face that made my three-year old nephew turn his head and say, ‘Make that scary lady go away.’” True fucking story. Kids and dogs, man. They know when something’s wrong.

Dolly Parton, 65, has a new interview in The Mail to promote her latest album - her 41st! I love Dolly. Dolly is the exception to every rule. Dolly is grace and genius and hilarity, all with an enormous rack. I love her. Do not speak ill of Dolly. Do you know that the Dolly empire, including her song catalog and Dollywood, is worth nearly $1 billion? Did you know that people in the music industry refer to her as The Iron Butterfly? Did you know that she?s awesome? The full Mail piece is here, and here are some highlights:
On her ?cheap and gaudy? look: ?A lot of people have said I’d have probably done better in my career if I hadn’t looked so cheap and gaudy. But I dress to be comfortable for me, and you shouldn’t be blamed because you want to look pretty. My husband likes me to look this way, and he’s the one I want to please.?
On her 45-year marriage to Carl Dean, and the rumors that she?s had affairs with ?everyone from Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds to Judy Ogle, her assistant and best friend?: Dolly cannily likes to keep the speculation going. ?I love to flirt, and I’ve never met a man I didn’t like. Men are my weakness. Short, fat, bald or skinny ? I’ve had crushes on some very unusual men but Carl knows I’ll always come home and I’m not having sex with these people ? I’m just flirtin’ and having fun. But that’s healthy. If I’m away I’ll say to my husband, ?You don’t mind if I fantasize about Keith Urban [Nicole Kidman's husband] tonight, do you??, and he doesn’t. More on Carl Dean: There is little photographic evidence of Mr Dean, who used to run an asphalt-laying company, leading to speculation that, like the Yeti, he may not even exist. ?Oh, he exists,? laughs Dolly, ?it’s just he doesn’t really like to be with anybody but me. He loves staying home and working on the farm.? With Dolly often on tour, is it a case of absence making the heart grow fonder? ‘I think so,’ she nods, ‘we’re never stuck in each other’s face. And any time we start getting a little testy with one another, I’ll say, “Don’t you need to go to the barn for a while?” ? we know how to get out of each other’s way without being offensive to one another.’
Dolly gets the last laugh: ‘Some people didn’t think I was a class act because of my looks,’ she says. ‘But it didn’t take them long to find out they were wrong.’ She’s an astute businesswoman too, having founded her own theme park, Dollywood, a radio station, restaurants, and record and TV companies. She even has her own literacy programme, which distributes 2.5 million free books to children every year.
On being child-free: Dolly and her husband have never had children of their own, although she says, ‘I think I became more productive through not having children. I never really had the desire to have them. My husband didn’t want them either, so it worked out well.’ She had a partial hysterectomy in 1984, which led to weight gain and depression. ‘I’ve never been pregnant, so I just feel God didn’t mean for me to have kids, so that everybody else’s children could be mine,’ she adds. ‘But if I had had them, I think I’d have been a devoted mother. My songs are like my children ? I expect them to support me when I’m old!’
The early days in male-dominated Nashville: ‘I grew up around lots of men ? my father, my brothers, my uncles ? so I wasn’t intimidated by them,’ says Dolly, ‘and feeling pretty and sexy actually empowered me. I got jumped on on occasion, but I always knew how to diffuse a situation without injuring their pride. I never slept with anybody to get ahead in my career. It didn’t take long for them to realize I wasn’t there to sell my body, but because my work was worthy. I’d say, “I have a gift and think I can make us both a lot of money ? are you interested?”, and they usually were.’
On her high heels: Her ultra-femininity is incredibly appealing and one can’t help picturing her in her gym, working out in high heels. ‘I’m not that bad,’ she laughs. ‘I have tennis shoes with little rhinestones that I slip on if I exercise. But I always wear heels, even around the house. I’m such a short little thing, I can’t reach my kitchen cabinets.’

Another one-liner from Dolly - when asked how long it takes to do her hair, she says, ?How do I know? I’m never there!? Oh, and she refers to her boobs as ?showdogs? which is awesome. I need to start calling my boobs ?showdogs?.
As far as the ?rumors? that Dolly has nailed various celebrity men?? I don?t know. Burt Reynolds bedded lots of high-profile women back in the day, but I don?t know if Dolly would have been one of them. And Stallone? Puh-lease. I really hope she didn?t go near him. Not that I would begrudge her an affair - I wouldn?t. I just hope that if she did fool around with someone, it was someone really hot. Like, Robert Redford or something.

Oh, Dolly Parton. Even though I’m not a country music fan (that is, aside from Johnny Cash), it’s impossible to dislike Dolly, who has always possessed an indomitable spirit throughout her long-lived career and grew up in (truly) humble beginnings. Although I must admit cringing ever so slightly when she recently engaged in some freestyle rap during one of her concerts, Dolly is still and will always be quite the legendary gal. Currently, the singer is in the midst of her latest music tour and, as such, has given quite the interesting interview about some of her early experiences with fanatical devotees. According to Fox News, one of them even tried to give her a baby. Really.
Country music legend Dolly Parton has revealed in an interview, gaining global attention Wednesday, that a “loony” fan once left a baby on her doorstep.
The 65-year-old, who is on her “Better Day” world tour, told Chicago’s Windy City Times she was shocked by the incident, which occurred after she penned her famous 1974 track “Jolene.”
“Years ago, when I first started being a big star, I had fans that were fanatical. It was when ‘Jolene’ was a big hit,” said Parton.
“We came home one day and there was a baby in a box at our gate with a note in it. The note said, ‘My name is Jolene, my momma has left me here and she wants you to have me.’ Of course, we all freaked out!”
“It wasn’t like it was a kitten or a puppy dog. It was a baby named Jolene!”
Parton, who is due to play in Chicago on Thursday, said she contacted Human Services about the abandoned child and never knew what happened after authorities took the youngster away.
The country star has concerts scheduled in England, Europe, US and Australia over the next four months, in support of her 41st studio album “Better Day.”

Obviously, Dolly did the right thing by immediately calling Human Services. Exactly what sort of person leaves a baby in a box anywhere, let alone on the doorstep of their favorite singer? That’s just so creepy, and I hope that, somewhere, fully-grown Jolene never reads this story anywhere. Hopefully, she was adopted out to a loving family (who ideally changed her name) and will never be aware of the crazy circumstances that surrounded her very early life. Crikey.

That?s what Dolly told me to do! She was on The Late Show last night, and Letterman started asking her about Miley Cyrus. It turns out, Dolly has known the Cyruses for forever, and Dolly refers to herself as Miley?s ?fairy godmother?. And what does Dolly think about Miley wandering around in lingerie and trying to be provocative and sexy? Country music legend Dolly Parton — appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night - said it’s time to leave Miley Cyrus alone, as the Hannah Montana star continues to take jabs in the media for her sexed-up image while promoting her new album, Can’t Be Tamed.
Parton, who said she’s Miley’s unofficial “fairy Godmother” told Letterman: “I’m there for her if she needs me, and I get upset lately, they’ve been hammering her to death, and she’s been trying hard to make the transition from Hannah Montana — she’s 17, and at that age … I know how I was at 17, so let’s leave Miley alone!”
Letterman said in response, “I think she’ll be alright because she’s very smart … I didn’t realize how smart that kid is.”
Cyrus appeared on Letterman earlier this month and addressed the controversy, saying, “I’m still a kid and I still do kid things. Anyone who says, ‘She’s growing too quickly,’ doesn’t know me personally.”

Apparently Miley came to Dollywood to film a special for the 25th anniversary of the theme park, and they did a duet of Dolly?s hit ?Jolene?. I found this video from E! News, and can I just say? Miley doesn?t sound horrible when she?s covering one of Dolly?s beautiful songs. Too bad she wants to be a trashy pop artist rather than a bluesy country singer.

Dolly Parton was on Oprah last Friday and while she looked like a comic book version of herself I have to say that she was awesome. Dolly has such a wonderful view of life, and of herself. She was promoting the 25th anniversary of Dollywood and Oprah did a whole piece on Dolly’s evolution through the years. You could see Dolly gradually getting more plastic over the years, but she’s always had that great big heart that kind of shines through all that Barbie-like dazzle. Dolly told a funny story about how she entered a real life Dolly Parton drag queen lookalike contest unbeknownst to the judges - and lost! She also talked about her marriage of 44 years. She said it works because she has an agreement with her husband that he can stay out of the spotlight as long as he wants to. As for the rumors that she has an open marriage, she did say that once but claims it’s about letting her husband pursue his own interests and that she’d kill him if that involved another woman:

Dolly and her husband, Carl, have been married 44 years.”I met him the day I got to Nashville back in 1964,” she says. “I wasn’t a star then, so I’ve never had to worry that he loves me because I’m a star and I’ve got money or make money or whatever. I know he loves me for me, and that means a lot to me.”
It’s been rumored that Dolly and Carl have an open marriage, but Dolly says statements she’s made in the past have been taken out of context. “That just means we let each other be who we are and how we are. But I’d kill him if I knew he was with somebody,” she jokes. “We love people. He knows I’m a flirt and a tease, but it’s harmless. I’ve never met the man that would take his place.”
Dolly says respect for her husband’s character is the reason Carl lives his life out of the spotlight. “Early on in my career, I’d won [Song of the Year] in 1966, and I asked him to go with me. … He was so uncomfortable,” she says. “He said: ‘Now I want you to do everything you want to do. I want you to enjoy every minute of your life. But don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of these things. Because I am not going.’”
Dolly says she never asked him to make another public appearance. “He’s proud of me. He’s just basically shy about things like that. He doesn’t like crowds,” she says. “And I respect his privacy. I respect the fact that he loves to be out of the limelight. That’s one of the reasons I think we’ve lasted so long.”
On losing a Dolly Parton lookalike contest
Dolly admits she once lost a Dolly Parton lookalike contest in Santa Monica. “Lots of drag queens dress up on Halloween like Dolly, and that was back when everybody was dressing like Cher or like me. So I thought how fun would this be?” she says. “I just kind of over-exaggerated everything I am?bigger hair, bigger beauty mark, bigger boobs, if you can imagine.”
Standing just over 5 feet without heels, Dolly says she was the smallest contestant there. “Here all these big drag queens are at least 6 feet tall with their high heels,” she says. “I was kind of lost in the shuffle. They didn’t take me serious at all.”
Dolly ended up coming in second place. “I did it just for fun,” she says. “It was just fun to tell the story.”

There are videos on Oprah’s website of Dolly and Kenny Rogers singing The Gambler with Oprah. Oprah is a huge fan, who knew? Dolly and Kenny also sing Islands in The Stream. In another video, Dolly shows us inside her fabulous tour bus complete with her giant Pink bed, a tiny bathroom with a separate shower, a vanity, and a closet full of wigs. Dolly also explained that she even cooks on the bus and is currently on a low-carb diet during the week and eats what she wants on the weekends. I love Dolly!
