Dolly Parton recently turned 75. It feels like we?ve been getting a lot of Dolly-themed retrospectives over the past year, but I don?t think it?s just about the big milestone birthday. I think Dolly has just been open to looking back on her decades-long career in film and music and she?s always looking to stay relevant with the next generation. That?s probably why she?s signed up for the Netflix deal a few years ago, and why she?s been more open lately. I mean, Dolly is a national/international treasure. Surely, she?s one of the few people everyone can agree on: Dolly is the best. Well, Dolly decided to sit down with Oprah for AppleTV?s The Oprah Conversation, which is just one long-form interview. They discussed being childfree and plastic surgery and a lot of other stuff:
Her freedom without kids: Since I had no kids, and my husband was pretty independent, I had freedom. So I think a big part of my whole success is the fact that I was free to work. I didnt have children because I believed that God didnt mean for me to have kids so everybodys kids could be mine, so I could do things like Imagination Library because if I hadnt had the freedom to work, I wouldnt have done all the things Ive done. I wouldnt be in a position to do all of the things Im doing now.
Whether she believes there were more sacrifices than rewards in her career: Ive made sacrifices, but I think, like I said, I believe what I know Im supposed to do.
Her approach to aging. I dont think about my life in terms of numbers. First of all, I aint never gonna be old because I aint got time to be old. I cant stop long enough to grow old, she shared with a laugh. Parton went on to say that shes going to be the best I can be at whatever age. I bet you I wont look much different when Im 95, if I live that long, because Im like the Gabor sisters. Im gonna look like a cartoon. Ill have on the makeup. Ill look as young as my plastic surgeons will allow me and [with] all the makeup and lighting and all that. But I think more than anything, its about what comes from inside you. Its an attitude, and you gotta shine from within. Sometimes, that can make you feel young and make you seem young to other people.?

It?s interesting to me that Oprah would ask Dolly about being childfree, since Oprah is also childfree. Two of (arguably) the most famous, powerful and beloved women in the world, and both of them chose not to be mothers. I always wondered if Dolly always knew that she wouldn?t have kids though I mean, consider her generation, consider the pressure to have a certain kind of life and branding within country music and all of that. She must have gotten the ?are you going to have kids? questions for years and years.
As for all of the plastic surgery talk? Dolly gets away with so much because she?ll always be the first person to admit it, to talk about what she?s gotten done and now the plastic surgery is part of her brand too.

Dolly Parton is a goddess full stop. Dolly is also timeless and trendsetting. Not only did Dolly help get one of the COVID vaccines (Moderna) on the streets (she donated $1 million to its research and development) she has now may started a fashion trend for those getting vaccinated. After posting a video of getting vaccinated, Dollys vaccine shirts previously known as cold shoulder shirts went viral. Cold shoulder tops were very popular back in spring/summer 2019. Since it looks as if we will get to celebrate a late spring and summer in 2021, it is fitting that we would rediscover fashion from more happier times. Heres more on this story, from People:
Sartorially speaking, 2020 was the year of loungewear, oversized hoodies, and fuzzy slippers. 2021, on the other hand, will inevitably be known as the year of vaccine shirts, AKA cold-shoulder tops, which provide prime access to the upper portion of the arm for easy vaccine administration ? without having to roll up any sleeves.
Dolly Parton was the first to post the brilliant hack on Twitter, and many replied that theyve now realized they own the perfect shirt to get vaccinated. But if your closet doesnt happen to be overflowing with cold-shoulder tops, there are plenty of affordable options on Amazon youll want to wear long after youve received the vaccine.

The other thing that I love about the vaccine shirt is it is sexy and it is a signal if you are single, that you are ready to mingle (if the other person has been tested and vaccinated of course). Vaccine shirts also look good on everyone no matter the age or size. You can wear vaccine shirts with jeans, leggings, skirts and shorts. And of course vaccine shirts serve a more practical purpose, they make it easier to get vaccinated without having to roll up your sleeve (look Ive gotten lazier the last year). Dolly Parton is a national treasure, an international icon, a woman without peer, a humanitarian, a brilliant businesswoman, and just a lovely person. All Dolly does is win. She befriends a local doctor and out of that friendship, Dolly ends up funding the creation of a Covid vaccine. Dolly wanted kids born in poverty to have access to books, and somehow she ended up sending out millions of books to children all over America over the course of decades. Dolly told RuPaul that she?s pretty sure she?s a bigger drag queen and RuPaul didn?t say sh-t because he knew she was right!! Dolly defies demographics. Dolly is forever. Recently, Tennessee lawmakers introduced a bill to erect a Dolly Parton statue in Nashville. The statue had broad support among Republicans and Democrats. But it does not have Dolly?s support.
It was something that Democrats and Republicans in Nashville could agree on: a statue of the country music legend Dolly Parton on the grounds of the State Capitol. The only problem? It doesn?t have Parton?s vote.
The singer released a statement on Thursday asking the Tennessee General Assembly to pull a bill that would have started the process for commissioning a statue of her.
?Given all that is going on in the world, I don?t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time,? Parton said in the statement, which was posted on Twitter and Instagram.
A monument to Parton gained support during a debate over whether to remove the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate general, slave trader and leader of the Ku Klux Klan, from the Tennessee State Capitol. In 2019, a Republican House leader, Representative Jeremy Faison, suggested Parton as a potential replacement for the Forrest bronze; in January, a Democratic legislator, Representative John Mark Windle, introduced a bill to initiate plans for the statue on Capitol grounds. According to the bill, the statue would be positioned to face Ryman Auditorium, a storied country music venue.
In her statement, Parton, 75, left the option open for a statue to be erected in the future, writing, ?I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I?m gone if you still feel I deserve it, then I?m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.?
The singer was being considered for her role in country music history, her philanthropy and her strong Tennessee roots. (She was born in Sevierville, Tenn., or as she likes to say, ?the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.?) It helped that Parton has long kept her political opinions to herself, saying in the 2019 podcast series ?Dolly Parton?s America? that she avoided the subject because ?I have too many fans on both sides of the fence.?
Representative Windle?s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether he planned to remove the bill from consideration. The bill was scheduled to be considered by a House committee on Tuesday.

That being said, I wouldn?t mind at all if the state legislature just went ahead and voted on it and began to take action on commissioning the statue. I feel like we should put Dolly Parton in charge of everything? Put her in charge of race relations, put her in charge of education, put her in charge of the federal government, and absolutely put her in charge of the coronavirus vaccine. As it turns out, Dolly did her part in creating the newly-announced corona-vaccine from Moderna. Pfizer?s vaccine was announced last week, and Pfizer?s data indicates that their vaccine has a 90% efficacy rate. Moderna?s efficacy rate is even higher, and the vaccine doesn?t have such a short half-life. So where does Dolly come in? She donated $1 million to the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, which was one of the groups working on the Moderna vaccine:
Not content with gifting the world with some of the greatest music ever, delivering an encyclopedia?s worth of quotable soundbites (?It costs me a lot of money to look this cheap?), starring in a brand new Christmas film and donating over 147 million free books to children, Dolly Parton has also played a part in saving us all from the hell hole that is 2020.
Yep, just when you thought Dolly couldn?t be any more of a saint, the country singer and philanthropist donated $1 million (760,000) towards Covid-19 research which resulted in the Moderna vaccine.
According to The Daily Beast, Dolly became friends with Vanderbilt University surgeon Naji Abumrad after she was involved in a car accident in 2013. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the doctor showed the singer the research the university was doing on antibodies to combat Covid-19, and she stumped up a cool million to the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, which was involved in the Moderna vaccine trial.

In Moderna?s own literature and disclosures about their vaccine, they even cite Dolly Parton as one of their funding partners. Dolly didn?t make it a secret either she posted on her Instagram in early April that her ?longtime friend? Naji Abumrad had briefed her about their research and work into a corona-vaccine and that?s why she donated $1 million. President Dolly!!

Among the many ways celebrities are helping fans cope with cabin fever, reading stories online has become a favorite. Save with Stories was started by Jennifer Garner and Amy Adams in partnership with Save the Children and No Kid Hungry. We discussed Josh Gads Book Club that hes doing nightly to give parents a 10-minute break.
At least two more celebrities are joining the National Story Hour: Dame Dolly Parton and Reading Rainbow?s LaVar Burton. Dolly is pure joy so the idea gives me good feels (yeah, yeah ? I know, it?s for the kids). Her story time will be called Goodnight with Dolly and is an extension of her Imagination Library that sends books to preschool aged children with limited access. (Have I mentioned that this woman is a saint? She also just donated $1M to Vanderbilt Hospital to aid coronavirus research.) Dolly told kids she?d be reading some of the books from her Imagination Library in her Goodnight with Dolly teaser:
Her first reading is tonight at 7 PM eastern and will happen weekly. You can stream the event on YouTube. I mean your kids your kids, of course, can hear Miss Dolly providing what she hopes will be a welcome distraction during a time of unrest and also inspire a love of reading and books.
LeVar, who is arguably better known as Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation, hosted Reading Rainbow for two decades. Reading Rainbow was a wonderful children?s education show that ended in 2006. A few years ago, they launched a Kickstarter to bring Reading Rainbow back in some form and met their initial goal in 11 hours. LeVar currently hosts a podcast called LeVar Burton Reads, so naturally, he wanted to find a way to live-stream his reading to help everyone stuck at home, but he was struggling to find public domain property that would appeal to a wide array of people:

Dolly Parton. Admit it, that?s all the introduction you need to the story. Just by saying her name, everyone reading released out a deep breath and let a much needed smile creep across their face. I don?t think Dolly is perfect lord, who needs that? But Dolly fills me with such joy that reading an interview with her releases serotonin, I?m convinced. Anyway, there is a purpose to this post, after all. A&E?s Biography series will debut Biography: Dolly on April 12. In addition, her very successful stage version of 9 to 5 The Musical is coming to Australia so 60 Minutes Australia ran a segment on her. I swear Tom Steinfort, the interviewer, is in love with her. The full piece is below but here are some highlights.
On being worth half a billion dollars
I count my blessings more than I count my money. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away. I?m very grateful that I?ve been blessed.
?Dolly for President?
Can you imagine anything worse than being head of a country? I think we?ve had enough boobs in the White House. I don?t want to be another one.
On growing up poor
I was never ashamed of my upbringing. We were very poor but we were rich in the things that mattered, in kindness and love and understanding. It just depends on what you call wealth and success.
On her marriage
When I first got to Nashville in 1964 I had no intentions of finding a boyfriend. Very first day [I met my husband]. We?ve been married for 53 years. We get along great. He?s independent, so I am. He likes to stay at home, I like staying gone.
?You?re looking very youthful?
Good lighting, good makeup and good doctors. A good attitude don?t hurt either. I?m kinda cartoonish and cartoons don?t really age that much.
On if she?s going to retire
I don?t plan to retire. I just turned 74. I plan to be on the cover of Playboy Magazine again. If they?ll go for it I think I will. If I could be on the cover again when I?m 75. I could probably [wear the same outfit]. Boobs are still the same.

?I think we?ve had enough boobs in The White House,? is probably my favorite line but calling herself a cartoon is a close second. And I don?t disagree with her, there is very much a cartoonish vibe to how she presents herself, but it?s paid off because no one takes her to task for aging. Think how depressing it would be if Dolly came out in a housecoat and low ponytail. Between admitting to getting work done and getting it done often and dressing for a beauty pageant talent competition, Dolly is allowed to shine mostly free from criticisms. And she looks like she?s having a ball doing it so you go, Dolly. Live your whole life out loud.
Most outlets are using a pull quote that Dolly said towards the end that she hopes to get the cover of Playboy for her 75th birthday next January. She appeared on the cover in 1978 wearing the famous strapless bodysuit and bunny ears and Dolly said she?s open to wearing the same for her next cover. This would be a fantastic statement if Playboy?s willing to make it. The 60 Minutes segment is below. Its worth it to hear all the snippets of her music. As I said, I don?t think Dolly is perfect. I think that Dolly has had to project a certain persona to protect herself in the industry and she?s still using that today. Overall, I do think Dolly sends the right message about living life on your own terms.

Dolly Partons Heartstrings is out on Netflix today. Each episode is inspired by one of her songs, and Dolly is appearing in each of the eight episodes, according to IMDb. Dolly has been giving interviews ahead of the shows launch. One of the things that she told Robin Roberts in an ABC News Special was that she sees herself as a kind of mother or aunt figure to todays younger artists. She tells them shes proud and that you can do it and youre doing great. Dont expect that Dolly gives them advice, though. She tells People why she refuses to do that:
You cant really give advice, the country legend, 73, says in this weeks issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. Like I say, I have information, but its really not right to try to tell somebody else how to live their life
I was advised by a lot of people how I was doing things wrong when I came in, she continues. I thought, ?How can I do things wrong when its about me? I will know it if its wrong. I will know it because Im that in tune with myself and that in tune with God. It may not always turn out right from me, but Im still safer in doing what feels right in my gut and in my heart. Thats why I say its not advice. There are things that I say, ?You dont need to ever do this. But we know what those are anyway. If someone just point blank asked me something, Ill give them my take on it. But I still aint going to advise them.
Dolly talks about her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, and how she doesnt give Miley advice, either:
Ive told [Miley] some things that I think are valuable and that she uses, but Id rather live an example, she says. [I'd rather] be an example rather than just try to tell somebody to do this, do that because I dont think thats right. Everybodys different. Youve got your own journey. And some people are going to help you along the way and they can kick a few rocks out of the road for you, but you got to walk it.
During a press conference held at her Dollywood DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, to promote Dolly Partons Heartstrings in October, Parton told reporters that shes proud of Cyrus, 26, for doing her thing.

I understand why Dolly doesnt want to give advice: She got a lot of bad advice when she was starting out, and decided that if she trusted herself and God, shed be fine, and thats worked out for her. So, she knows better than most people that its possible to get terrible advice from well-meaning people, and she doesnt want to steer anyone wrong and give them advice that wont actually help them. Since she lives an example, as she calls it, other people can perhaps take a decent guess at what advice Dolly would offer them, based on how shes lived her own life.
On the other hand, I can see people who love and respect her really valuing her take and advice on certain situations. Heck, Id love her advice, for that matter. If I were Miley, Id probably be calling her often to ask for all sorts of advice, because shes Dolly-freakin-Parton, and my godmother. But, Dolly is an icon who can do as she pleases, so if that means not giving advice, so be it. I do appreciate that she doesnt want to be overbearing and start every sentence with, Based on my long, successful career, if I were you, I would She knows that will grate, and so she wants to avoid it. I just feel that, given her decades of experience in the music world, she probably wouldnt give anyone bad, useless advice. Oh well. Well all be left wondering, WWDD? Im going to try to binge Heartstrings this weekend, and cant wait. (Im going to assume that shed at least tell me to do that, if I asked.)

Dolly Parton is actually touring now, at 73, which is my moms age. My mom is a fit 73 but shes retired. So many entertainers work late into their 70s, 80s and even 90s, which is impressive and surely contributes to longevity. Im thinking of Betty White (and imagining a protective shield around her, shes 97!), Bob Hope and George Burns. Dolly has a cute short interview with the New York Times in which she talks about her tour bus, her theme park, Dollywood, which has a new addition called Wildwood Grove, and her routines. I know about this interview thanks to Mieka at Dlisted, who points out that Dolly doesnt take off her makeup at night! That sounds like a recipe for bad skin to me, but Dolly has nice skin so whatever shes doing works for her. Heres some of what she said:
Do you have any good travel skin care tips?
I clean my face in the mornings. You never know if you?re going to wreck the bus, you never know if you?re going to be somewhere in a hotel and there?s going to be a fire. So I leave my makeup on at night and clean my face in the morning.
Do you fly a lot?
I fly when I have to. I don?t like to fly. But when I tour we make it part of the deal. I don?t like to spend tons of money, just flying here and there to say I?m flying private jets, because I?d much prefer my bus
No matter where in the world you go, you always come home and contribute here. Can you talk to me about that?
I think you should be able to be proud of where you?re from. I didn?t leave here to get away from my people. I wanted to do other things, I wanted to go see the world, but I was always proud to be a country girl.
I knew this would be a wonderful business venture, but I also knew it would really bring a lot of joy and happiness and a lot of jobs, too. That was important to me. Growing up poor, I know how important it is to make a living. And take pride in it.

I really liked what she said about making an honest living, and how she wanted to create that for people in her home state with Dollywood. She also said she doesnt go on the rides there because she gets motion sickness and doesnt want to mess up her wigs. As for not taking off her makeup, I just listened to Zendayas 73 questions with Vogue and one of her main recommendations was to remove your makeup and wash your face every night no matter what. Weve seen Zendaya without makeup though, I dont think Ive ever seen Dolly without makeup. Im like Dolly, I dont feel like myself without makeup, but I always wash my face at night and just redo it in the morning. Other celebrities who dont wash their faces at night include Lady Gaga (although I bet thats changed since A Star is Born came out) and Ive heard that Loni Anderson didnt wash her face because she didnt want her ex Burt Reynolds to see her without makeup. Honestly Ive done that with guys Ive only dated a few months. I wait a few months before I let them see me without makeup. It helps me not give a sh-t if I have to dump them. (Ok Ive done this like maybe twice. Im not that hardcore.) Also, can we get the 9 to 5 remake already? What is taking so long?

Here is our Open Post for the 2019 Grammys. Our host this year is Dolly Parton, who was honored at the MusiCares event on Friday night in LA. She was the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year, and lots of A-listers came out to celebrate the one and only Dolly. Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, Linda Perry and Kacey Musgraves were just some of the attendees. The point? Everybody loves Dolly. Dolly is worthy of all the awards and honors. She is an American treasure.
I have another point here though, which is? this year?s Grammys are going to be terrible. While it was sort of funny that Taylor Swift?s Reputation got so snubbed, it also means that Taylor who is arguably the biggest musical act in the world and the biggest pop star in the world won?t be attending the #StruggleGrammys. Ariana Grande is also boycotting the Grammys this year because the douchebros in charge wouldn?t let her perform her hit single. Beyonce, Rihanna and Lorde are all skipping out too. From the looks of it, I think Lady Gaga is one of the few scheduled women to perform solo, and even then?she?ll be going solo because Bradley Cooper won?t be there to perform ?Shallow? with her. My point is that Dolly Parton?s MusiCares gala probably got better A-list attendees than this year?s Grammys.
That being said, Dolly will perform at the Grammys, and she?ll be joined on-stage by Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris and Little Big Town (which sounds like a gigantic mess). Other performances: Travis Scott (probably doing ?Sicko Mode??), Dua Lipa and St. Vincent (huh), a tribute to Aretha Franklin, Cardi B (okay, she?s a MAJOR name, but I bet they make her perform with dudes), Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monae, Post Malone (with the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Diana Ross at some point. The opening sounds genuinely exciting too, but we?ll see.

Can you believe that national treasure Dolly Parton is 69 years old? She has that ageless look that comes with lots of makeup, tons of fake hair, and the cumulative effect of plastic surgery. Dolly will tell you about it too. She’ll also tell you that she’s happiest working and that she doesn’t plan to stop until she’s physically unable to. In a new interview with People Magazine, Dolly talks about her latest business endeavors, her plans for the future, and how she wants people to remember her. She’s as funny and self deprecating as ever. This is a brief piece in People but I really wanted to cover it.
On Dollywood
When we first opened [in 1985], I was so scared. I was just thinking ?Oh, please. Let the people come.?
On her career
I don?t intend to ever retire unless I get sick or my husband gets sick. I want to work until I fall over dead!

I?m in my own class, but it?s mostly low. I have my makeup on every day. It?s how I feel comfortable.

People notes that Dolly is opening a new resort this summer in Dollywood, called DreamMore. It looks pretty incredible and like it’s specially tailored for kids and families. I didn’t realize what a big deal Dollywood is, but the amusement park has been around for 30 years and is thriving. There’s also a sister waterpark, Dollywood’s Splash Country.
As for Dolly herself, I’m surprised she doesn’t have a makeup line already. She’s shown that she can pretty much do whatever she sets her mind to. She’s an incredible lady and we know that she’s got a big heart too. Have you heard about her Imagination Library?
