Above is a photo of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith at the premiere of his new movie, Concussion, for which he’s getting Oscar buzz. Jada wore this insane see-through sequin Zuhair Murad gown that Will is admiring. She’s about to rip the skirt off so it won’t trip her up when she does a double axle. This isn’t the first time that Jada has worn an obvious “look at me” outfit to one of Will’s events. Just last week she got her boobs out at the Latin Grammys, where Will performed, in yet another sheer and silver sequin dress.
Will’s face kind of says it all here, he has the best expressions.
Will has been fielding questions about his marriage, and he and Jada have put a lot out there about their relationship so that’s to be expected. When asked for the “secret” to his 20 year marriage Will said it’s hard work, basically.
“We’ve been married 20 years and we’ve been asking ourselves [what?s the secret to marriage] and really at the end of the day it?s just not quitting,” the 47-year-old actor said of Pinkett Smith, who he first started dating in 1995 and then married two years later. “You can?t expect it to be easy, it?s like our marriage was the most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives. And you know were just not quitters and by the same token we’re not apathetic. We’re not going to sit there and let it be painful, we’re going to keep working.”
?If there is a secret I would say is that we never went into working our relationship. We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”

I could shade Will for this because a lot of people think long term relationships should be “easy,” but when you have two strong-willed highly motivated people like this I don’t doubt that they clash. At least he’s being honest, although he doesn’t sound too positive about it. I don’t really understand how he could say that they never worked on their relationship together and only “worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.” Maybe that works for them, or doesn’t work depending on what is going on behind the scenes, but what about learning to communicate and work things out? It sounds like they just avoid each other for a while and get back together when they’ve had enough alone time. That’s pretty much the impression I’ve had of their relationship.
Will has several more interviews promoting Concussion, based on the true story of a forensic doctor who fought the NFL to bring awareness to the epidemic of traumatic brain injury among football players. It’s out on Christmas. GQ has a cute video interview in which he describes his worst 80s fashion fail, a half-shirt on Fresh Prince, and also talks about one of his son’s fashion moments, where Jaden wore a batman suit to a girl’s prom. Will explained that Jada talked their son into at least wearing a tie with it, “so I blame his mother.”

Oh and a lot of outlets are talking about Will revealing that he turned down the lead in Django Unchained because he wanted to make it more of a love story than a revenge tale and Tarantino wasn’t on board. Will said this during The Hollywood Reporter’s Actors Roundtable discussion, but Forbes points out that this is actually the second explanation he’s given for not taking that role. Back when promoting After Earth (ha), Will said he didn’t do Django because Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter character got to be the hero and kill the bad guy, not his intended slavecharacter, who was ultimately played by Jamie Foxx. It just sounds like he tried to tell Tarantino how to make his movie and Tarantino wasn’t having it. I can’t imagine Will Smith in that role anyway, Jamie Foxx was so impressive.

Last Friday, we reported on a story from The National Enquirer which claimed that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith would be filing for divorce at the end of the summer. The Enquirer took it a step further than your typical speculation and said that the famous couple had already worked out a monetary agreement for splitting their assets. It seemed plausible to me, especially since The Enquirer was one of the outlets which called the Battfleck divorce well ahead of time.
This is the summer of divorces, but it looks like Will and Jada might not be joining all the other famous splitting couples. The two have denied that they’re getting a divorce. Will posted a denial on Facebook and a source gave a denial to Gossip Cop. What’s more is that Jada did an interview with the American Airlines inflight magazine in which she denied she’s getting a divorce and said that “marriages shift.” She always says things like that though, so it’s not like it’s an indication of anything new. She?s not someone with whom to be trifled, and when Jada Pinkett Smith decided she wanted a role in the hit television show ?Gotham,? she went all out.
During her panel at PaleyFest over the weekend, the ?Collateral? cutie recalled her audition for the gig, when she met executive producer Danny Cannon for the first time.
?I said, ?Forget it, instead of talking about who Fish Mooney is, let me show you. I went method.?
As it turns out, ?method? meant that Jada wore a long gown with a wig and brought a shirtless man on a leash with ?Liar? written in lipstick across his forehead. And she got the part.

Adding even more star power to the mix, Jada Pinkett Smith has signed on to star in the forthcoming ?Magic Mike XXL? flick.
The ?Gotham? gal chatted with Queen Latifah about the gig, which came about as one of the roles underwent a pretty major change.
Jada explained, "Yes, you know, Channing and Gregory and Warner Bros. really took a chance. There was a character written for a male that they wanted to turn into a female? Not one of those [characters]! I can't really reveal it yet, but I'm excited about it."
Ms. Pinkett Smith?s addition to the cast comes just after it was confirmed that Matthew McConaughey would not be returning for round two. ?Magic Mike XXL is slated to grind its way into theaters on July 1, 2015.

Jada Pinkett Smith covers the October issue of Health Magazine to promote her role as villain Fish Mooney on the new series Gotham on Fox. Gotham tells the origin stories of well known DC characters including Batman, The Joker and Catwoman. It also stars Donal Logue (love him!) and Benjamin McKenzie as Gotham’s finest. Jada’s character is a new addition to the story. I saw a preview clip available on X-Box, and Jada was a little stiff in the role. Maybe she’s playing an over the top classic villian. Jada says as much in her Health interview. She also talks about the hands-off parenting style she practices with Will and she praises Angelina Jolie for helping her research human trafficking. (She has a documentary called Rape for Profit, which is available on iTunes. The companion website is Don’tSellBodies.org.) On her parenting style?
?I think we have to have more trust in our children. People have always gotten on us about not punishing the kids, and let me just talk to you about that for a minute. We raised three kids before Willow and Jaden, and especially on my goddaughter, I put so many boundaries on her??No, you can?t do that, you can?t do this.? And everything I tried to control, every freakin? thing I was trying to avoid, happened. I learned a lot from that experience and realized that while Willow and Jaden are still with me and have a safety net, I want to give them the opportunity to make mistakes and learn how to put boundaries on themselves. So by the time they?re out of the house, they fly.?
On what didn?t work for her character on Gotham?
?I went in for the table read and did this over-the-top Mid-Atlantic accent, like Joan Crawford. And Peter Roth from Warner Bros. called me that afternoon and said, ?Jada, I don?t know how to tell you this, I love you to death, but???
On Angelina Jolie?s support?
?Angelina Jolie and I, we?re not friends, but when I called her about my human trafficking endeavors, she went all in. And I really appreciated that because there are not a lot of times that you can call upon people in our business and get serious help. She put me in contact with the people I needed to be in contact with, she sent me books, sent me all the information she had. I?m not saying that Angelina and I are, like, girlfriends and kicking it every day, but when you call another woman who?s in a position to lend support to you and she just jumps right in there ? that?s sisterhood.?
On aging?
??It is what it is! I?m getting older! I?ve never looked at myself as, like, a beauty. I?m not sore on the eye, but I know there?s always going to be somebody more beautiful?always. My grandmother used to say to me, ?It?s not about what you look like on the outside. It?s what you look like on the inside.? So she helped me learn at an early age to be well-rounded, to be spiritual, to be compassionate.?
Asked: What do you do to maintain your amazing skin?
“Nothing supremely special. I get a facial maybe twice a year, and I drink a lot of water… [She spies Willow across the street, coming back from Whole Foods with a family friend, and waves.] “Willow got into alkaline water, and Jaden’s like, ‘Mommy, you can only drink distilled water.’ And I’m like, ‘Listen, I can’t keep up with you all, I just can’t. I’m cool with the tap water.’”
On her fitness regimen?
?It?s funny?my cardio workout varies. If I have a heavy carb week, I?ve got a heavy cardio week. I tell people all the time, ?You can eat whatever you want, as long as you?re willing to put the work in,? and that?s a thing I had to learn. So I make sure I do something physical every single day. But that doesn?t mean you have to go to the gym and freakin? kill yourself! I do 20 minutes of cardio a day… Literally, I?m never in the gym longer than 45 minutes. Just be consistent? that?s it! It doesn?t necessarily have to be intense, and you will see a difference.?

There’s a lot here, and there’s even more in the source article. I found it strange that Jada praised Angelina on one hand and yet kept insisting that they weren’t friends. If someone in your industry helped you with a key project, wouldn’t you say something like “we didn’t really know each other well beforehand, but she really stepped up for me”? Why would you repeatedly insist that you are not friends with the person unless there’s some history there?
In terms of her parenting style being reactionary, that makes sense. It’s a dumb way to approach raising kids, but it makes sense. It’s still not an acknowledgment that many aspects of the Pinkett-Smith’s belief system are straight from Scientology. Jada will tell the public a lot of things, but she keeps some things close to the vest. Her skin is not just the result of facials, she’s obviously done injectables, but she’s not going to talk about it. At least it’s settled for her.

Jada Pinkett Smith has a new interview with Net-A-Porter, which was brought to my attention by the excellent E! Online. (We need more entertainment news channels. I mean ESPN isn’t the only sports network, there’s Fox Sports. Not that E! doesn’t do a good job, except for their Kardashian problem, but there’s a market for another celebrity news network.) Jada’s editorial is absolutely gorgeous too. It features Jada in structural black and white dresses in a city/urban setting. She looks killer, they did a great job as we’ve come to expect. Net-A-Porter has some of the best editorials around, and you can see Jada’s photos here.
I went off on a minor tangent there because I really don’t want to parse Jada Pinkett Smith’s word salad. She is heavily influenced by Scientology, and it shows in her personal philosophy and her very roundabout way of phrasing things. (She’s not as bad as Ashley Judd, though, and as far as I know Judd isn’t in a cult.) Jada talks about how she is letting her kids be their own people, a theme she and husband Will Smith talk about frequently, and about how her marriage is ok… I think. Jada has hinted in the past that she has an open marriage, or that Will cheats and she’s come to peace with it. I get the impression that she’s saying that again here in a roundabout way.
The actress and mother of two came to daughter Willow Smith’s defense again during an interview with high-end shopping site Net-a-Porter, when she was asked about the controversial photo of her 13-year-old lying in bed with a shirtless Moiss Arias, 20.
“Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” she says, shaking her head. “It’s really tough. I feel like the connection to the value of women on a bigger scale has decreased tremendously. Even though you look and go, ?Women have so many opportunities,’ it’s like, ?Yeah, but at what cost?’
“Are women valued for being women, or are women valued when they have more masculine qualities? Men and women encompass both female and masculine energies, but it seems like when the feminine is present, it’s not respected.”
Pinkett Smith also noted earlier in the interview, “I want my kids to be happy and I want them to be themselves. I was saying to a friend the other day, ?Remember, our kids are not us.’ They’re not. Sometimes we’re trying to fix things that happened to us or projecting [onto them], and that’s a terrible, terrible trap.”
Speaking of her family life, Jada also opened up about her marriage to funnyman Will Smith, gushing about how much the actor means to her and confessing that it took some time to get to where they’re at.
“We used to have all these rules, [but] as you go on in your relationship, you just get into a flow,” she says. “The thing I love is being in a place where it’s just like, Will, to me, encompasses everything. It’s almost as if calling him ‘my husband’ is too small of a word for what he means in my life?and especially how I feel we, as women, identify the idea of a husband.
“I really had to mature and expand that. I think I had a very stuck idea of what a husband looks like, what a wife should be. Once I broke all of that, a whole new world opened for me and man, oh, man, I got to see him in all his glory. And so that’s what it’s evolved into. And I’m just ecstatic about it.”
As for all of the tabloid rumors that surround their relationship, Pinkett Smith says they don’t even pay it any mind.
“The coping technique is knowing what the truth is? here’s no better technique. When you know that what’s going on in your house is so the opposite [of what's being said], and you also know that when there’s mystery, people fill in the gaps, that’s OK,” she says. “And then you look back at it and look at how creative people can be, and it’s kind of entertaining. We can laugh because it’s so ridiculous. But I get it. I don’t take it personally.”

I like Jada’s stance on the tabloids and how she’s ok with it, she gets it and doesn’t take it personally. It sounds like she has a similar approach to her marriage “it is what it is.” She loves Will and he loves her and things don’t have to be perfect. To me infidelity is a deal breaker but maybe to them it isn’t. I can respect that. As long as they’re both ok with it and it’s not one-sided.

About three years ago there were massive rumors that Will and Jada Pinkett Smith were living separately, that each of them were having affairs or at least dalliances with other people, and that they were on the brink of divorce. Jada was spotted out without her wedding ring and the rumors continued until at least the spring of 2012, when they did a couple of half-hearted photo ops together.
After all that, Jada made some statements which seemed to suggest that she and Will had an open marriage. (At least that’s what I got out of what she said.) Both Jada and Will have otherwise made it clear that they’re in it for the long haul, though, and they seem to have recommitted to each other lately. They both sound like they’re on the same page when it comes to their hands-off parenting policy, that’s for sure.
That’s why it’s interesting to me when Jada speaks about her marriage as if it’s something to fight and work for. She’s been with Will for over 20 years, and while they’ve learned to stop oversharing about their sex life, they’ll tell you that they have to work for it. Jada gave these comments to Extra, where she was promoting her role on a Fox TV series called Gotham. (The show tells the origin stories for DC superheroes and a video preview is here. Actress Jada Pinkett Smith and husband Will Smith have had divorce rumors constantly swirling, but at FOX?s TCA this weekend, Jada made it clear to ?Extra?s? Renee Bargh that they are very much together.
Pinkett Smith said the key to their relationship is friendship. ?Your partner has to be your best, best, friend. And he’s my best friend.?
Jada had some sound advice on keeping your marriage strong. ?You have to have kind of a warrior mentality. You have to be a solider for love. You have to be able to withstand tough times and just because the tough times come doesn’t mean it’s time to stop? it means it’s time to dig in.?
Pinkett Smith also gushed about her upcoming 20th wedding anniversary. ?We’re going to be celebrating 20 years in two years, so we’re starting to plan now for a big 20th year.?

In terms of what Jada said about Will being her best friend, that reminds me of a Ted Radio Hour that I heard recently. A couples therapist named Esther Perel made the point that we ask too much of our partners, and that relationships can “crumble under the weight of expectations.” In modern society we often expect one person to be everything to us – erotic and mysterious yet familiar, friendly and comfortable. Those things aren’t necessarily compatible. I’m not saying that couples shouldn’t be close friends, just that it’s food for thought.
Also, I just spent way too much time digging through nonsensical Scientology sites trying to figure out if this “marriage as war” analogy is something that the cult promotes. I couldn’t confirm that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Will and Jada shelled out a lot of cash in exchange for some joint auditing. (i.e. holding tin cans.) Good for Will and Jada for sticking together and working it out if that’s what they want. I get the impression that their joint branding is an extra incentive to make it work.

Making a return to the small screen, Jada Pinkett Smith is set to join the cast of Fox?s ?Gotham.?
Starring alongside Benjamin McKenzie, the ?Matrix? hottie with portray villain Fish Mooney in the pre-Batman city of Gotham.
Her character is described as "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner [with] the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she's not one to be crossed."
The series is based on the DC Comic characters from the Batman universe and explores the origins of Commissioner James Gordon and his rookie detectives.

Gearing up for some New Year?s celebrations abroad, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith caught a flight at LAX International Airport on Monday (December 30).
The ?Fresh Prince of Bel Air? hunk and his lovely wife were all smiles as they meandered through the terminal en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Last week, Jada encouraged her fans to remember all of their blessings via a message on her Facebook account.
She wrote, ?My husband lost a friend today. It hit me how often I forget that nothing lasts forever, especially life. Today, I am blessed to be surrounded by the love of my family and friends, and I have been reminded not to take that for granted. Honor and cherish what and who you love because nothing is immune from impermanence. Love.?

Jada and her husband Will Smith are once again the subject of rocky relationship rumors, and perhaps Pinkett?s attention-getting getup was her way of making her hubby jealous.
Will has been working on the new film ?Focus? in Argentina as of late, and insiders have claimed that he?s getting a little too close to beautiful costar Margot Robbie.
