Kristen Bell seems to have first opened up about her battle with social anxiety and depression during an interview with The Off Camera Show which we covered a few weeks ago. She admitted that she’s experienced depression since college and that she’s been on medication for it ever since. Bell explained that she felt empowered to get help because her mother spoke to her about the fact that depression runs in their family. It was surprising to hear from someone as successful in show business as Bell, but she said that she’s had to work hard to overcome her insecurity and that her personality is a kind of coping mechanism.
In a new first person essay for Time Magazine’s Motto, Bell reiterates the fact that she has experienced depression and explains how debilitating it was for her. She also writes that she wants to help eliminate the stigma around seeking help.
Here?s the thing: For me, depression is not sadness. It?s not having a bad day and needing a hug. It gave me a complete and utter sense of isolation and loneliness. Its debilitation was all-consuming, and it shut down my mental circuit board. I felt worthless, like I had nothing to offer, like I was a failure. Now, after seeking help, I can see that those thoughts, of course, couldn?t have been more wrong. It?s important for me to be candid about this so people in a similar situation can realize that they are not worthless and that they do have something to offer. We all do.
There is such an extreme stigma about mental health issues, and I can?t make heads or tails of why it exists. Anxiety and depression are impervious to accolades or achievements. Anyone can be affected, despite their level of success or their place on the food chain. In fact, there is a good chance you know someone who is struggling with it since nearly 20% of American adults face some form of mental illness in their lifetime. So why aren?t we talking about it?
Mental health check-ins should be as routine as going to the doctor or the dentist. After all, I?ll see the doctor if I have the sniffles. If you tell a friend that you are sick, his first response is likely, ?You should get that checked out by a doctor.? Yet if you tell a friend you?re feeling depressed, he will be scared or reluctant to give you that same advice. You know what? I?m over it.
[From Motto]
I really like how she put that, and I admire the fact that she’s being open about her struggle and is trying to change the way depression is perceived. It must not be easy to admit. Bell is personally affected by this issue and obviously cares deeply about it. I wonder if she can partner with a nonprofit group to help lend her celebrity to the cause. When we see that popular celebrities also have depression and anxiety, it does help us feel like we’re not alone. It may also make us quicker to recognize when a friend or loved one needs our help.

| Kristen Bell on her anxiety: 'I shatter when I think people don't like me' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Kristen Bell has a YouTube interview with The Off Camera Show where she gets quite candid about her issues with anxiety and depression. She also admits that she’s been taking medication for it since she was a teenager. (She actually did this interview about a month ago, but outlets are just picking it up now.) I find this surprising about her because she comes across as very outgoing and type A. She explains her personality as a coping mechanism though. Kristen’s husband, Dax Shepard, recently opened up about the fact that he was sexually abused as a child. Maybe Dax influenced Kristen to be more candid with the public. Whatever inspired them to speak out, they both seem brave to me. Here’s some of what Kristen said and you can see the video above:
On feeling insecure
I’m extremely codependent. I shatter a little bit when I think people don’t like me. That’s part of why I lead with kindness and I compensate by being very bubbly all the time because it really hurts my feelings when I’m not liked. I know that’s not very healthy and I fight it all the time. Looking back I was always nervous right under the surface that someone would reject me so I changed who I was often. I changed my interests to what my friends liked. I didn’t realize that until I was in my 30s.
On her anxiety and depression
I also struggled a lot with anxiety and depression. My mom sat me down when I was probably 18. She said there is a serotonin imbalance in our family line… My grandmother was one of the first people they tested electroshock therapy on. She would lock herself in her bedroom and drink for two days and they would slide food under the door.
Her mom told her how cope
My mom [is] a nurse and she had the wherewithal to recognize that in herself… When I was 18 said if you start to feel [this way] this is what is is and here’s how you can help yourself.
She takes medication
I present this very cheery bubbly person but I also do a lot of work… I check in with myself when I need to exercise. I got on a prescription when I was really young to help with my anxiety and depression and I still take it today. I have no shame in that.
On the double standard for psychiatric drugs
My mom said to me ‘If you start to feel this way, talk to your doctor… if you do decide to go on a prescription understand that the world wants to shame you for that, but in the medical community, you would never deny a diabetic his insulin.’ For some reason, when someone needs a serotonin inhibitor, they’re immediately crazy or something.
[From The Off Camera Show via People]
I could relate to this so much. I have what’s probably moderate social anxiety and moderate depression, which is so much better when I exercise. (I’ve tried medication but it didn’t work for me.) I don’t try too hard like Kristen though and people sometimes think I’m a snob, which is easier for me than making small talk. I’d rather stay home than to go to a party and then try not to think for days about the ways I screwed up talking to people. (Intellectually I’m sure it’s not as bad as I imagine, but I still do that.) This is also part of the reason why I don’t do Facebook. I’ll think way too hard about the ways I’m interacting with people even online.
Kristen has another interview segment with The Off Camera show where she revealed how sensitive and empathetic she is, even when she doesn’t want to be. She got choked up describing an inspiring Real Sports segment about armless archer, Matt Stutzman, and said that she cries over everything. (We saw her sloth encounter, we know this.) Like her social anxiety, she can fixate on the negative. “I love positive stories, but the negative ones just sit in my heart and fester there and I think about them often.” She said that this does help her in her career though because she’s able to empathize with characters and cry on cue.
In her third segment with Off Camera, Kristen talked about her relationship with Dax. She said that she’s an optimist who trusts people and that Dax is a pessimist. She used to see the world in black and white but Dax helped changed her worldview. These two are growing on me.

We don’t see Kristen Bell much anymore these days. Ever since she became a mom MILF, it’s like she’s too busyor something. But the good news is she’s got a new movie coming out, so she was contractually obligated to show up to the world premiere with that super-cute cleavage of hers for once. So […]

| Kristen Bell gushes about Peter Dinklage: 'Charisma personified' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Kristen Bell is co-starring in the Melissa McCarthy comedy The Boss, out April 8th. She plays an exec in Melissa’s company who helps Melissa’s character get back on her feet again after losing her empire. The trailer made me laugh a few times, but I didn’t consider seeing it in the theater until I saw the red band trailer, which makes it seem bawdier and possibly hilarious. Bell was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s show this week, where she gushed about working with Peter Dinklage. I don’t know what Dinklage’s role is, but you can see him engage in some sword fighting (not a euphemism) at about 1:55 into the restricted trailer.
Anyway Bell seemed pretty sincere when she described Dinklage as a kind of super smart intelligent charismatic enigma. I don’t doubt that’s how he is in person but it was cool to hear.
When [Kristen Bell] got the opportunity to work with one of the HBO show’s stars, Peter Dinklage, in Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy The Boss, she had a tough time keeping her chill. “Peter is my favorite because, first of all, he is charisma personified. He had everyone on our set eating out of his hand. He’s always sitting on set vaguely listening to us chatter and doing The New York Times crossroad puzzle?and not the Monday one! The Sunday one!” she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday. “He’s hyper intelligent and he’ll throw out a witty comment every now and again.” Bell added that she and co-star Melissa McCarthy were both “desperate” for clues about the popular series’ sixth season, but Dinklage “just toyed with us.”
Because they loved working with Dinklage so much, they kept a Tyrion Lannister figurine by the monitors. Later on, someone on set placed a Princess Anna doll next to it. Bell, who voiced the princess in Disney’s Frozen, may or may not have put the two toys in uncompromising positions. “I’m not saying I put them in these positions,” the actress said, “but I’m not saying that I didn’t.” Jimmy Kimmel showed photos from her Instagram account, saying, “These are adults at work.” Bell added that Dinklage “didn’t know” about the toys. “I tried to play it very cool around him.”
[From E! Online]
Bell also talked about how she’s a huge Game of Thrones fan, to the point where she made her daughter a Game of Thrones Night’s Watch costume. Bell also claims that the day she decided to do a photoshoot “some random friend stopped by with a giant white German Shepherd. A Direwolf you guys!” Yeah I’m not buying that coincidence, she probably called her friend to bring the dog over or she planned the photo around the dog, but still it’s a cute story. I checked her Instagram for that photo but then I remembered that she doesn’t post photos of her kid and is totally anti-paparazzi photos of kids. Bell was one of the founders of the “No Kids Policy” movement, and unlike other celebrities she really walks the walk.
Also, Bell shared these photos from her Instagram of a doll of her Frozen character, Princess Anna, in compromising positions with a Tyrion Lannister figurine. She said that “I’m not saying I put them in these positions, but I’m not saying that I didn’t.” She claims Dinklage didn’t know about that, but he does now.
Tyrion and Anna had a lot of fun on set of #TheBoss in Atlanta. A LOT OF FUN. @thebossfilm

In addition to a bustling acting career, Kristen Bell is also mom to her two adorable little girls Lincoln (2 yrs) and Delta (5 months).
The ?Veronica Mars? babe told Us Weekly that she plans on spending all kinds of time with her brood during her summer hiatus- "I?m going to mommy them the whole summer. I?m going to take my girls out and about, and do crafts and art projects. We just got a bunch of plants at the farmers market and we?re going to plant a big garden this summer."
Bell also acknowledged that she was springing everything on her husband Dax Shepard without his foreknowledge- "This is the first my husband?s hearing of it, but I?m getting in way over my head. This will not be a shock to him, because that?s how I like to do things, but I just get in a little too deep and I am planting 20 feet of strawberries along the side of our house? We have decided to plant a ton of strawberries in the back, and basically our property is lovely, but I?m over plants that don?t bear food we can eat. So, I?m pulling out some really pretty lantana and replacing it with strawberries. [In] front of the house, I?m putting in blueberry bushes, grapes, and raspberry bushes."

| Kristen Bell: Being a mother is an 'absolutely unmissable' part of life | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
Kristen Bell covers the May issue of Good Housekeeping to promote her role in House of Cards. She barely talks about the show other than to say she’s not stressing about her career. Motherhood is her main priority. Kristen gave birth to her second daughter, Delta, last December. So there’s the obligatory discussion of baby weight, which I omitted because Kristen’s doing the “I’m not worried about it, I burn off calories running after my kids” shtick. I think she is more focused on weight than she reveals, mostly because she talks about having exactly 17 pounds left to lose.
The interview is very long, so I’ve grabbed some bits and pieces with the full piece available here (including lots of stuff on her pro-vax stance). She talks about her childbirth process and raves about how epidurals make you feel great again. She admits to naming her second baby Delta because it sounds, “badass” (sorry, Golden Girls fans). What I find most interesting are the parts about couple’s therapy and how she considers motherhood to be an “unmissable” experience in life:
On regular couples therapy: “I thought I had this life thing down pat when I met Dax. I didn?t realize that I needed a much bigger toolbox to have confrontations and disagreements with people. You do better in the gym with a trainer; you don?t figure out how to cook without reading a recipe. Therapy is not something to be embarrassed about. … I don’t mind advertising a healthy marriage. I?m trying, just like everyone else.”
She loves being a mom: “I wasn?t positive I wanted kids. But I can now confirm having them is absolutely unmissable. Before we had the girls, I asked a few people in my life who are annoyingly blunt and honest on every level if we should, knowing that if it wasn?t worth it, they?d have the balls to say, ‘Listen, don?t. Live your life.’ But across the board, everyone said it was unmissable. When Lincoln came out, at first I was like, ‘Eh, what do I do with it? I can take it home?’ But when I started breastfeeding, the oxytocin or my hormones or hundreds of thousands of years of evolution kicked in. I didn?t want to let her go. Having kids feels like that first seventh-grade crush that overwhelms every molecule in your body, but it?s permanent.”
Motherhood is karma: “I never understood my mom until I had kids. When she would look at me like I was the first drop of water she’d seen at the end of a desert trip and go, “You will never understand how much I love you,” I would go, “God, get away! Enough!” Even in my 20s, I just thought, “You’re so dramatic and overly sentimental.” Now I look at my kids that way and think, “Wow, this is a cycle.” Lincoln won’t understand it until she decides to have kids … that’s just the way it’s supposed to be. Motherhood right-sized everything for me. I’m happier, and I was pretty happy before.”
[From Good Housekeeping]
Dax also pops into the interview when the counseling subject comes up. He’s totally into regular couples therapy and doesn’t see why there’s such a stigma. I think there’s nothing wrong with therapy, but it often doesn’t work because lots of married couples try it as a last ditch effort. Sort of like trying to repair a car that hasn’t had an oil change in 15 years.
Kristen talks about many other things, including baby sign language classes (which CB covered already). She also discusses how heartbroken she was to have a second C-section with baby Delta. Kristen didn’t have a 70-hour labor like Jill Duggar, but she labored for over 24 hours when doctors told her it was finally time. Kristen says she fretted over Delta feeling unbonded because mommy couldn’t lift her for six weeks. I understand that concern, but it sounds like Kristen has more than made up for that brief period in her baby’s life. Children are born via C-section all the time, and they turn out fine.

| Kristen Bell in Andrew Gn at the Spirit Awards: bizarre or cute? | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Yesterday’s Independent Spirit Awards were a lot of fun, as usual. There were some decent jokes, memorable speeches, blatant product placement and a laid back vibe that only the Spirit Awards could achieve. Kristen Bell and Fred Armisen hosted, and they had a nice musical number, a twist on “A Little Bit Country, Little Bit Rock and Roll” as well as a cute bit where they seemingly ad libbed what the attendees were thinking. My favorite part was when they honed in on Andy Samberg and Armisen made Samberg sound like an idiot.
The big winners last night were Birdman and Boyhood, Birdman took home best feature while Boyhood earned best director, with some awards going to Nightcrawler and Whiplash. The complete list of winners is here. As usual we’ll be covering the fashion.
First off is co-host Kristen Bell in a bizarre black Andrew Gn dress featuring a green side bow on the waist and a diagonal hem that trailed down to reveal half of a lilac miniskirt. The fabric on the skirt gives the illusion that her dress is blowing up to reveal old timey bloomers. What possessed her to wear this? The good news is that Kristen ditched this dress for a white eyelet top and skirt for the ceremony. Here’s what she wore inside:
Presenter Emmy Rossum was super cute in a cream sleeveless Oscar de la Renta gown with floral embroidery. If you look closely you can see that the skirt under the mesh overlay features wide horizontal stripes. This is a feminine, playful look and it was so pretty on camera. Of course I think Emmy elevates most of the things she wears though.
Nominee and presenter Jenny Slate was in a tight Mary Katrantzou strapless gown with a beige top and a bright yellow skirt. The colors are kind of fug and there are random numbers and letters embossed on the fabric, which is strange. I think she’s somewhat pulling this off. Like Emmy, she makes up for it with her attitude.
Patricia Arquette won for best supporting female. She’s pretty much a lock for tonight’s Oscars. Arquette was in a black Raoul top and skirt featuring beading and sequins along the neckline and bottom of the short-sleeved top. The outfit was kind of forgettable and I hope she brings it tonight. She was gorgeous in Vivienne Westwood at the SAGs. When Patricia went up to accept her award, an announcement got triggered unexpectedly and she joked “Was that God? She sounded great.” She also thanked network television for helping her make a living and gave a shout out to film distributors.
Patricia’s costar Lorelei Linklater was in a black McQ Alexander McQueen pantsuit. This girl is 20, she loves goth style and yet she’s still able to smile like that on the red carpet. I think she’s super cute and I enjoy that she’s staying true to herself.
Look at her boyfriend! Two peas in a pod.
I’m throwing Gillian Jacobs in at the end here because I miss Community and because I really liked her little contemporary Preen dress. She didn’t Britta this up. One complaint: I like her better blonder.

| Kristen Bell in Monique Lhullier at The People's Choice Awards: lovely or fug' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
This morning we’ll be bringing you more fashion from last night’s People’s Choice Awards on CBS. First up with have Kristen Bell in a bizarre fuchsia Monique Lhullier gown which is shaped, well, like a bell. Kristen gets a pass because she just had a baby before Christmas, but I hope she brings her fashion game in the future. I usually like Lhullier but this dress is just bizarre.
Kristen was there supporting her husband, Dax Shepard, who presented the award for Favorite Hip Hop artist, which went to performer Iggy Azalea. Dax’s show Parenthood returns tonight for its final four episodes. I love that show so much, I will probably watch it again from the beginning at some point.
Here is presenter and Once Upon a Time star Ginnifer Goodwin in a white empire waist v-neck Delphine Manivet gown. Ginnifer loves avant garde looks and I think she’s going for a balance here. I like that Ginnifer chose white for winter and that she went with a full coverage dress. There’s something off about the fit, though. Plus it has pockets, which she used on the red carpet and on stage. That bugs. Ginnifer also just had a baby last June.
Gina Rodriguez, the star of Jane the Virgin, co-presented the Favorite Movie Actor award with Ginnifer. That went to Robert Downey, Jr. She was in this tiered sleeveless gown with a sheer overlay featuring an abstract dot pattern. I don’t have a designer ID on this gown, but it’s decent and pretty. I really dislike the flouncy skirt, though. Gina’s show Jane The Virgin won for Favorite New TV Comedy. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve only heard good things about it.
Here’s Melissa McCarthy, who won for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress. She’s in a killer pantsuit of her own design with leather accent lines. She usually wears David Meester gowns and I like that she’s mixing it up. This suit looked striking and contemporary on camera.
Presenter Sarah Hyland was in a strapless baby blue Christian Siriano gown featuring a beaded bodice, quilted skirt and sheer beaded skirt panel. There’s way too much going on with this dress. It might have worked without the extra skirt extension. Plus she looked kind of orange.
Finally here’s Chloe Moretz in Louis Vuitton. This outfit looked much better on camera, probably because I wasn’t paying attention to the details. It seems like the top should be see through but there’s some kind of flesh-colored underlay that’s keeping us from seeing her undergarments. Plus it has like rough stitching along the sleeves. I don’t get it. Chloe won Favorite Dramatic TV Actress, for her role in If I Stay. She was very poised in her acceptance speech and dedicated it to her grandmother who passed away last year.

Awards show season is officially here and earlier tonight (January 7) Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard looked excited while arriving at the 2015 People's Choice Awards.
Clad in some fabulous red carpet finery, the ?Frozen? gal and her "Parenthood" hubby waved to the eager spectators before heading inside the Nokia Theatre LA Live to grab a seat.
While there are a slew of different awards shows on deck over the next few months, the People?s Choice Awards is certainly unique. Per the official site, ?The People's Choice Awards celebrates fan favorites in movies, music and television and is the only major awards show where real people - not industry insiders - determine the nominees and winners, setting it apart from other awards shows.?
