The Self cover featuring an alternate reality version of Kelly Clarkson where she’s thin and attractive is garnering a lot of criticism. Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of the magazine, decided to respond.
Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best. Did we publish an act of fiction? No. Not unless you think all photos are that. But in the sense that Kelly is the picture of confidence, and she truly is, then I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand.
So… Kelly’s personal best is to be 30 pounds lighter with a completely different bone structure? That’s good to know that right now she’s a failure. I wonder how she feels about that. Pretty good, I bet.
I mean, it’s not even the same person on the cover which is what makes the comment “truest we have ever put out there” so laughable. Are they honestly trying to convince themselves of that? You could put Porky Pig in place of Kelly Clarkson and it’d still be the “truest” they’ve ever put on the cover. Who are we fooling here? Let’s be honest. We all know what they Photoshopped out. The drumstick in her hand and a layer of chicken grease over her mouth. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Leave it in. Everyone already accepts her for being a fatass.

Self Magazine editor Lucy Danziger, who counts J.Lo among her best buddies, has issued a cringe-inducing statement in response to the outcry over how much thinner Kelly Clarkson looks on the cover of Self this month. Without outright admitting that Clarkson was Photoshopped to look thinner, Danzinger claims that the picture was retouched to “make her look her personal best,” adding “I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand.” Give me a break. If that’s the case, it shows how “true” Self normally is.
Kelly Clarkson may not have an issue with her weight, but a digitally slimmed-down image of the singer on the cover of Self magazine is causing waves online.
Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of the women’s health magazine, is speaking out in defense of “retouching” the 27-year-old singer in order to make her “look her personal best” on the September issue.
“Yes. Of course we do retouching,” Danziger writes in a post on Self.com. “Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best.”
Calling Clarkson “the picture of confidence,” Danzinger writes, “I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand.”
But many readers have expressed disappointment and outrage over the digitally slim Clarkson. “Hey, hi, Self ladies: None this changes or explains the fact that YOU ALTERED THE BONE STRUCTURE OF HER FACE,” write one reader on jezebel.com where the controversy is stewing.
Adds another reader: “Taking out red eye and airbrushing a pimple would be making her look her personal best. You completely changed the way her body looked. Why even bother asking Kelly Clarkson to pose in your magazine if you didn’t think her body fit into your idea of what was best?”
In the Self article, Clarkson defends her figure. “When people talk about my weight, I’m like, ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t. I’m fine!,’ ” Clarkson says. “I’m never trying to lose weight ? or gain it,” she added. “I’m just being!”
This is not the first photo flap the singer has been involved with: In January Clarkson wrote on her blog that “they Photoshopped the crap out of me!” on her All I Ever Wanted album cover image.

How haughty was that statement from Danziger? It’s like she’s saying “Yes, we photoshopped the crap out of Clarkson, but she needed it and still isn’t up to the Barbie standard we usually present.” What the hell is that “truest” photo crap? That just makes me angry. If they didn’t think Clarkson was worthy of the cover, they shouldn’t have put her on it. Clarkson is lovely as she is, and it’s not fair to her to Photoshop her so much slimmer and then present quotes from her inside the magazine that contradict the image they’re presenting. Self’s cover this month reveals their priorities. All the large text is about “Slim Down,” “Foods that Fight Fat,” “Body Confidence… Reach Your Goal Weight,” and then - way up in the corner in much smaller font it says “Kelly Clarkson: Stay True to You and Everyone Else Will Love you Too!” Everyone except snotty fitness magazine editors who think you need a lot of help looking your “personal best” and still remain their “truest” cover ever.

Although her weight is a constant topic of conversation, Kelly Clarkson isn’t worrying about it.
The “My Life Would Suck Without You” songstress recently opened up for the September issue of Self magazine, telling, “When people talk about my weight, I’m like, ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t. I’m fine!’.”
She added, “My happy weight changes. Sometimes I eat more; sometimes I play more.” The 27-year-old admits she’s into golf these days.
Clarkson’s motivation for exercising isn’t to lose weight. “I do it totally for my psyche,” she explains. “I’m much better when those endorphins are going. It’s a release. And I also love food, so there’s a payoff!”

Kelly Clarkson has become one of my favorite celebrities. She has a great way of not succumbing to the pressures of fame. She doesn?t give in to body criticism ? and she?s received a ton of it. In fact, Kelly seems more confident and happy than ever. Whenever I see her interviewed I?m always impressed by how genuinely friendly and level-headed she seems. It honestly boggles my mind that some celebs act so high and mighty, and others like Kelly seem like they could be your next door neighbor.
Kelly?s doing her third cover for Self magazine, and in it she talks about her positive body image.
Kelly Clarkson admits her size fluctuates in the September issue of Self mag. “My happy weight changes,” the American Idol champ says. “Sometimes I eat more; sometimes I play more. I’ll be different sizes all the time.” Clarkson, 27, says she doesn’t care though. (In June, she admitted she was tired of hearing “the fat joke” because she’d accepted her curves.)
“When people talk about my weight, I’m like, ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t,” she explains. “I’m fine! I’ve never felt uncomfortable on the red carpet or anything.”
The singer tells the mag she’s been working out with CrossFit, a strength training and cardio program used by police academies and military special operations, according to its Web site.
“I love it! It’s like boot camp,” she says. “You never work out more than 35 minutes, but it’s so intense. You do things like box jumps, then 50 sit-ups, then 50 squats and then running.
“Me, my backup singers and my hair-and-makeup girl do it together. They laugh at me, because most of the time they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, I don’t want to go,’ and I’m the one saying, ‘I’m ready!’” she goes on. “It makes me feel like GI Jane. It’s very empowering. I feel like I can whup a–! And in my shows, everybody has noticed. They’re like, ‘Dude, you have 100 percent more energy!’”

I pass one of those boot camp fitness places everyday and their routines look hardcore. Like, you?d probably rather beat yourself over the head with a mallet than endure five minutes of it. Or at least I would. But I respect the hell out of anyone that would willingly put themselves through that. Obviously Kelly works out, but everyone?s got their own shape and their own metabolism. She?s under no obligation to go to hardcore extremes to get some teeny tiny celebrity approve body. She became famous for winning a competition (American Idol) that seeks out talent in regular folks. She seems to still carry a lot of that attitude with her, and I mean that in the very best sense. And ultimately, the only thing that matters is that Kelly?s happy with her body, and she?s always made it clear that she is.

Kelly Clarkson is like one of those bears that haven’t been fed for a month and are suddenly let out of their cage to perform. Here she is on Good Morning America turning on her trainer. They eventually tased her and got her to sing. Here she is right after they calmed her down. You can see the hunger in her eyes as she debates whether or not to go for the audience. It was a tense moment for all, but luckily it all worked out in the end.

She’s in the middle of her All I Ever Wanted North American Tour, and this morning (July 31) Kelly Clarkson gave a wake-up performance on “Good Morning America.”
The “Never Again” songstress looked to be in good spirits as she took the stage in New York City’s Central Park, even hamming it up with host Sam Champion when she was done singing.
As for the recent controversy surrounding the similarities between her song “Already Gone” and Beyonce’s “Halo,” Kelly says it’s out of her hands.
“It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a sh***y situation, but ... you know, you learn.”
Songwriter Ryan Tedder (who co-wrote both tracks), denies that he intentionally tried to make similar songs for the ladies. “They are two entirely different songs conceptually, melodically, & lyrically and I would never try to dupe an artist such as Kelly Clarkson or Beyonc into recording over the same musical track, the idea is both hurtful and absurd.”

She’s having a fantastic summer with the success of her All I Ever Wanted tour, and last night (July 29) Kelly Clarkson took her road show to Columbus, Ohio for a performance at the Ohio State Fair.
Following a groove-filled set by opener Eric Hutchinson, the “Since U Been Gone” songstress took the stage in front of a packed house.
Sporting a vintage-style Debbie Harry t-shirt and black jacket, Miss Clarkson rifled through a hit-filled set list, including “I Do Not Hook Up,” “Miss Independent,” “Hazel Eyes,” “Because of You,” “Never Again,” and “Breakaway.”
In addition, Kelly also tried her hand at some cover songs by such legends as Rod Stewart, Patti Griffin, and Janet Jackson.
After a brief break, Clarkson and her 11-piece band (including a DJ and a 3-piece horn section) returned to the stage for a few more numbers, ending out the night with her mega-hit “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

Continuing with her massive comeback tour, Kelly Clarkson was spotted rocking the main stage at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, California last night (July 23).
The “My Life Would Suck Without You” songstress looked a bit frumpy as she worked the crowd in a Pink jacket with a baggy David Bowie t-shirt and baggy jeans.
And it sounds like Kelly has scored yet another top gig, as she has been invited to take part in the VH1 Divas Live event coming up in September.
Miss Clarkson will join relative newcomers Miley Cyrus, Adele, and Leona Lewis in the first Divas concert since 2004.
A rep from the network told press, “Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world’s attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don’t let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come.”

After five long diva-less years, there's a new crop of pop stars set to claim, not to mention redefine, the title. Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Adele and Leona Lewis are slated to perform at this year's VH1 Divas concert. The show, the first since 2004, will take place live on VH1 on September 17.
Cyrus, Adele, Lewis and Clarkson join a long list of esteemed singers who have graced the Divas stage, including Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Cher, Diana Ross and Beyonc, to name a few. And although those ladies may seem more experienced in diva-dom, the show's producer, Lee Rolontz, assured fans in a statement that these girls are up to the task. "Adele, Kelly, Leona and Miley have all captured the world's attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year. Don't let some of their young ages fool you — these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come."
According to the press release, more presenters and performers are expected to be announced in the weeks leading up to the show. As in years past, the show will also benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
The VH1 Divas series premiered in 1998 with Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion. Subsequent shows included everyone from Donna Summer to Nelly Furtado to Mary J. Blige. The last concert took place in 2004 and featured Patti LaBelle, Jessica Simpson, Debbie Harry and Eve.

She has been constantly touring as of late to support her new album All I Ever Wanted, and Kelly Clarkson just announced a new batch of shows this fall.
The “My Life Would Suck Without You” songstress will be joined on the road this autumn by The Veronicas and Parachute for a string of dates beginning in Uncasville, Conn on October 2nd.
The tour is scheduled to hit many major cities in the United States and Canada (32 in all) before wrapping up in Hollywood, Florida on December 13th.
Steve Moore, a promoter with MEG/AEG Live Nashville told press, “We are thrilled to work with Kelly Clarkson again. She is truly one of the best vocalists in the business. And The Veronicas and Parachute round out a superstar lineup.”
