After denying earlier reports that their relationship was over, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have confirmed their breakup. We first heard about Reese and Jake’s maybe split in People Magazine in late November. It sounded like a done deal since People is usually accurate, but their reps said they were still together. Then People ran a follow-up claiming that their relationship was on the rocks because Jake wanted to get married and “can be a little overbearing at times” while Reese was content with the way things were.
Then there were rumors that Jake and Reese were still together, and that Jake was about to formally propose over the holidays. Jake even referred to Reese as his “girlfriend” in a recent interview, and talked about how he’d “learned so much from the kids in [his] life,” further sparking engagement rumors. Alas, it looks like they’re never going to take that step. Sources are reporting to multiple outlets that Reese and Jake really did break up two weeks ago and that People’s original story was correct:
Sources confirm that the two decided to end their relationship about two weeks ago. People magazine actually reported the split back then, but reps for both stars insisted they were still very much in love.
Reps are not commenting this time around.
So what went down?…
“They needed time to figure it out and they were on different coasts,” a source says. “When they were finally together, they talked it out and decided they’re not going to be together anymore.”
One source insists it’s completely amicable. “There are no other people involved,” the source said. “The relationship just ended. It just fizzled. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese’s kids.”
Our source also shot down recent reports claiming that Gyllenhaal was planning on popping the question. (FYI: Gyllenhaal seemed perfectly happy when we saw him just three days ago at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards in downtown L.A.)
Gyllenhaal, who will turn 29 on Saturday, and Witherspoon, 33, never talked publicly about their romance. Unless you count gushing over Jakey’s kitchen skills.
“Jake is a great cook,” the Oscar winner told InStyle magazine in October. “He does a lot. We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse. We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it.”

Popeater is also reporting that they’ve split and their source explains it in a matter of fact way. “The relationship was at the point where they either got engaged or broke up. There is no doubt that they love each other very much, but Reese wasn’t ready to say ‘I do.’ And if she wasn’t ready after two years of dating, Jake wondered if she ever would be.”
When did Jake call Reese his “girlfriend,” then? Was it right before they broke up or afterwards because he was holding out hope that it was a temporary split? I would assume it was before as it takes a while for interviews to go to press. I like Reese and although she’s definitely a type A personality (that’s the name of her production company after all) and a go-getter she strikes me as a decent person. There’s something about Reese that makes me root for her. She got married young and her husband cheated on her, so you can’t blame her for not wanting to marry the next guy she got in a serious relationship with.

Checking some names off her gift list, Reese Witherspoon was spotted doing some shopping on Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills yesterday (December 14).
The “Sweet Home Alabama” actress looked to be in good spirits as she hit up the Anya Hindmarch boutique as well as Jimmy Au’s store for men 5’8” and under.
And of course Reese was looking top-notch as she browsed, sporting a black blazer with a black top, beige skirt, and black tights.

Out and about in the sunny California weather, Reese Witherspoon was spotted making her way around Los Angeles on Wednesday (December 9).
Looking very unhappy with the paparazzi for following her to a convenience store, the “Cruel Intentions” babe told them off before heading inside for a few things.
Dressed in all black, Witherspoon came out a short while later and finally cracked that infamous smile before continuing along on her way.
Meanwhile, not helping their cause and sparking more break-up rumors, Reese’s boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal showed up solo to his sister Maggie’s LA movie premiere on Tuesday night.
Although their reps have denied a split, the “Brokeback Mountain” stud went dateless and stuck close his big sis and family at the premiere of “Crazy Heart.”

Enjoying a little quality time with her growing son, Reese Witherspoon was spotted out with Deacon in Brentwood on Tuesday (December 8).
The “Legally Blonde” babe seemed to be in the quite the chipper mood, smiling as she walked alongside her eldest child with paparazzi following nearby.
The mother/son outing comes after Reese returned home from a trip to London, during which time she happened to injure her foot.
She told press, “I think I broke my foot. I’m not sure, I haven’t had a scan yet. I was taking a nap yesterday because I was real tired, I had jet lag. You know when your foot falls asleep… Then I stood up. Someone called me on the phone and I went to answer the phone, and I said, ‘Oh I tripped over my shoe or something!’ I looked down and it was my foot I had tripped over! And I hadn’t had a thing to drink! I was stone sober! Then it swelled up and now it’s all black and blue.”

The “Sweet Home Alabama” babe/Avon Global Ambassador was all smiles as she celebrated the launch with UK Avon president Anna Segatti at a proper tea party.
Meanwhile, the rumors of a split between Reese and Jake Gyllenhall look to be false, as the “Brothers” stud referred to Ms. Witherspoon as his girlfriend during a press conference this week.
He said, “I’ve learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things. Obviously I exist in my girlfriend’s world and my sister’s world in a different way, but it’s opened my heart and I feel much more grown up and want to be grown up as a result of it.”

Amid reports of “are they or aren’t they still a couple,” Gyllenhaal, 28, used the buzz word of the week ? girlfriend ? shortly after arriving at a Beverly Hills Hotel suite Thursday for a press conference for his new film Brothers.
“I’ve learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things,” he told Grazia Australia, referring to his 3-year-old niece Ramona (daughter of Maggie Gyllenhaal) and possibly Witherspoon’s children, Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6. “Obviously I exist in my girlfriend’s world and my sister’s world in a different way, but it’s opened my heart and I feel much more grown up and want to be grown up as a result of it.

This week?s tabloids are full of alleged drama between Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal. This all started last weekend, when People Magazine reported that Jake and Reese were totally dunzo, then hours later had to retract the story because Jake and Reese?s reps were all ?no, they?re fine, bitches.? People did something strange after that - they kind of double-downed on their initial report, saying that they had a source who claimed that Reese and Jake did break up, but got back together and were trying to work through their issues. They also said Jake wanted to get married to Reese immediately, and Reese was all ?no, I?m fine, thanks.?
After all of that drama, Reese headed off to England, solo, to do some work on behalf of Avon?s ending domestic violence campaign. So? yeah. Stories about how she?s all alone, and Jake isn?t with her, and don?t you know that a woman can?t go anywhere alone without everyone knowing that she can?t keep a man?!? Star Magazine has some drama about how Reese and Jake spent Thanksgiving apart:
More than 40 guests joined Reese Witherspoon for a Thanksgiving feast at her LA home. But Jake was a no-show, and multiple sources confirm that they?ve split.
?Everyone was told not to mention his name,? a Thanksgiving guest tells Star. ?She?s not ready to talk about it yet. We were all sad for Reese. Thanksgiving is such a family holiday, and we all known Reese just wants to be part of a close family unit again.?
Reese has been complaining that in recent weeks, Jake has ?seemed distant.?
Sources says Jake ?isn?t ready to be tied down. He wants to get married one day, but he feels like Reese was pushing him into it. He got freaked out and said he wasn?t ready for such a commitment.?
After Thanksgiving, Jake told Reese he needed a break. Says the source, ?They had a huge fight. Reese was crying and devastated, but Jake was insistent that they take time apart.?
On Nov. 29, he sent his assistant to remove two suitcases of belongings from her home.

Yeah, I?m kind of ?meh? on this version. Mostly because I don?t see Jake as the commitment-phobic guy, I really don?t. I think Jake has some faults, I think he?s vanilla and tightly-wound, and probably a little compulsive about getting his way, but I completely buy that he loves Reese and her kids and wants to be settled down. So? I guess I believe People Magazine?s version.
In Touch Weekly agrees with People - they?re claiming that Jake is ?very serious about marriage and children? he wants a family and to make things official, but Reese never gives in.? Apparently, Reese is sort of ambivalent about having more kids. Meanwhile, Jake?s sister Maggie is getting all up in their business, and she?s ?been acting as the go-between and has been telling Jake that Reese is perfect for him.? Damn, hell must be freezing over, because I can see how an In Touch Weekly story could be true. Damn it!

She has always been known for her philanthropic work, and this week Reese Witherspoon is in the UK to tackle the topic of domestic violence.
The “Sweet Home Alabama” actress petitioned the members of Parliament and appeared on morning shows to raise the awareness of the problem that affects people all over the world.
Reese stated, “We are talking about everyone’s lives are touched by this issue, whether it be our children, or our mothers or our sisters. So many women. The most important thing I can do here today is start this dialogue that we’re having.”
When speaking to the historic Houses of Parliament, Miss Witherspoon seemed quite nervous. An eyewitness told press, “She looked quite emotional, she kept looking to the floor whilst she was listening to the other speakers. She seemed almost tearful.”
