Last month, we learned that Ellen Pompeo would be taking a big step back from Greys Anatomy for the shows 19th season. Shell be appearing in only eight episodes in a 20-something episode season, though shell remain as executive producer. Ellen will be working on a new role in a Hulu series.
On Friday, Ellen and her former TV husband Patrick Dempsey were both honored as Disney Legends. I didnt know this was a thing, but there was a ceremony with handprints and signatures and all. Ellen spoke to Yahoo! Entertainment about her upcoming quasi-departure and makes it very clear that she asked to step away from Greys.
As announced last month, longtime lead Ellen Pompeo, who plays the show?s namesake character, Dr. Meredith Grey, will have a reduced role in ABC?s hugely popular medical drama as the actress stars in a new still-untitled series on Hulu about the real-life American parents who adopted a Ukrainian woman posing as an orphan child.
In an interview Friday with Yahoo Entertainment at Disney?s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Pompeo shed more light on her decision to have limited screen time in the new season of Grey?s, saying that taking a smaller role was better than leaving the show altogether.
?The fans love the show, the company loves the show, and I always want to make everybody happy,? said Pompeo, who, along with former Grey?s co-star Patrick Dempsey, was honored as part of the new class of Disney Legends. ?I don?t know if that makes me a people pleaser, or I need therapy. I don?t know what it means.
?The show inspires people to go into the medical field. It inspires young people to want to be healers and doctors. It?s an amazing platform, and I really love it. But there?s only so much of it I can do after 19 seasons. It?s a lot. And I?ve given the fans and the show so much of my heart and passion and energy, and if I don?t have that same level 19 seasons later, I don?t deserve to be in every single episode. The fans deserve people who are super-excited and happy to be there. And these news kids that we have coming in are very happy and excited to be there.
?I did want to step away, and they were gracious enough to hear me, and then they were also more gracious than that to offer me another role.? (Hulu is majority-owned by ABC parent Disney.)

It was pretty clear that Ellen wanted to step away, but I think this is the first time shes specifically said it. Ive always wondered why theyve keep the show going for so long when its clearly past its prime. I figured Ellen did it due to her hard-won paycheck, the network did it because it still had an audience, and Shondaland did it just because they could. But it has been clear for a while now that Ellen doesnt have the same level of passion and energy about her role and the show. Its nice of her to frame it as not deserving to be in every episode instead of just saying she doesnt want to be in it as much. We all know its the latter, but this framing is more respectful of the others involved in the show. Its interesting that she says she wanted to step away and then they offered her the role on the Hulu show. Sounds like they were nervous she would want to quit completely, so the new role was a way to keep her happy but half in with Greys until they can see whether the show will survive without her. It seems like theyre transitioning toward this new class of interns, but I think its time to call it.

Tonight, Grey?s Anatomy returns for a historic eighteenth season, after Covid cut the 17th season short. There?s been tons of pop-culture pieces about what Grey?s Anatomy means and THR did a fascinating ?oral history? of Patrick Dempsey?s dramatic exit from the show, with interviews from every major cast member. It read part of that feature and it made me seriously wonder about Shonda Rhimes? ?no aholes? policy, because it honestly seems like Grey?s has been on for long, it?s turned everyone into aholes. Especially Ellen Pompeo. My theory was somewhat confirmed this week when Ellen told a story on her own podcast about the time Denzel Washington came in to direct an episode. Apparently, Ellen?s behavior was pretty bad. But what?s worse is that she?s telling the story like she?s the heroine of the tale.
Denzel Washington made his small-screen directing debut on Greys Anatomy back in 2015, with the season 12 episode The Sound of Silence, but according to series star Ellen Pompeo, things got a little loud during the filming of one particular scene when the two got into it. Pompeo shared the story on a new episode of her podcast Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo, in which she reunited with former castmate Patrick Dempsey. As the two discussed directing ? with Pompeo suggesting Dempsey do more of it ? he asked her what it was like when Washington came on board to helm an episode the season after Dempseys Derek Shepherd was killed off.
While she began by saying Washington was amazing, Pompeo went on to discuss a heated exchange the pair had. He went nuts on me, she said, adding that she was telling a good Denzel story from his time on set before detailing exactly what went down.
Pompeo was shooting a scene for the end of the episode in which her character, Dr. Meredith Grey, is asked to listen to an apology from a man who seriously injured her, leaving her with a broken jaw. (The story was inspired by a real-life incident in which an epileptic patient goes into a seizure and beat up a nurse, Pompeo explained.) It being an emotional scene for the actress to shoot, she ended up improvising dialogue in the moment in response to an acting decision the guest star made.
He made this choice to speak very softly. And [Meredith] was pissed that [she] had to sit there and listen to this apology, and he wasnt looking at [her] in the eye, Pompeo recalled, wavering between talking about herself and the guest star as actors and characters. Again, we love actors who make choices, right? And I yelled at him, and I was like, Look at me when you apologize. Look at me. And that wasnt in the dialogue, and Denzel went ham on my ass. He was like, Im the director. Dont you tell him what to do. And I was like, Listen, motherf???er, this is my show. This is my set. Who are you telling? Like, You barely know where the bathroom is. And I have the utmost respect for him as an actor, as a director, as everything, but like, yo, we went at it one day.
As Pompeo shared more of the story, she said she ended up having a little chat with Washingtons wife when she came to the set. (Pompeo had said earlier in the podcast that Washingtons wife was the one who told him to direct Greys, as she was a fan.)
I was like, Yeah, he yelled at me today. Yeah, he let me have it today, and Im not okay with him, and Im not looking at him, and Im not talking to him, Pompeo said. So we didnt get through it without a fight, but you know, thats actors for you ? passionate and fiery ? and thats where you get the magic, and thats where you get the good stuff. So it was an amazing experience, it really was.

So? Denzel tried to direct the scene because he was actually the director and Ellen threw a tantrum? On one hand, men get away with treating other people like this all the time. When men do it, they are called ?passionate? and ?authoritative.? On the other hand, I feel like if anyone male or female started bitching out Denzel Washington, there would be issues. Especially since Ellen does not think she was in the wrong at all, and she sees nothing wrong with her behavior.

In the fall of 2017, the Harvey Weinstein story broke in a huge way. I remember the lead-up to it, and the rumors that a big expos was about to drop, and not really believing that it would happen and not really believing that it would make a dent. I was happy to be wrong. Once Ronan Farrow, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey dropped their exclusives, everything changed. Weinstein?s victims finally felt like the world would listen to their stories. Survivors around the world felt like they could finally speak about what happened to them. There was a massive cultural shift in the way we spoke about Weinstein specifically, and sexual assault and predators generally. I know I wasn?t perfect in how I discussed these issues before and during the massive cultural shift. But I?d like to think that I handled it better than Ellen Pompeo.
Last week, a July 2018 clip of Pompeo speaking to the Oxford Union panel was rediscovered and it was? bad. Keep in mind, this was a good eight to nine months after the Weinstein revelations and well after the Me Too movement happened and Time?s Up was already a thing.
She couched these comments in both-sideism, that women bear responsibility for being sexy and seductive and not *stopping* men from assaulting them. She says in part:
I think we bear some responsibility, not all, but it takes two to tango for sure. Thats not to blame the victims, thats just to say I did go into a room with Harvey Weinstein, I sat at a table with him, I had a probably two-and-a-half hour conversation with him. He never said anything inappropriate to me, he never made any sort of physical advance to me. I wasnt in the room alone with him. I had been sent there by an agent in the middle of the daytime. I didnt think there was anything wrong. I wouldnt have gone into that room at night. But he did nothing inappropriate toward me. Now had he, I would have picked up that glass and smashed him across the side of the face with it. So I mean, its all what were willing to tolerate in our self-esteem, and what are we going to put up with, and what are we going to compromise to be liked, to be loved, to be accepted? How bad do we want to be in show business?

This is all just? bad. To say this months after Annabelle Sciorra told her story of Weinstein raping her in her apartment. To say this months after Lupita Nyong?o?s op-ed. To say this months after so many brave women came forward to speak of how Weinstein manipulated, harassed and assaulted them. But what makes this whole thing worse is that Pompeo got on Twitter last week to try to defend herself and she lied a lot and tried to pretend that all of this was out of context:
After the clip caught the attention of Twitter users, Pompeo used the platform to apologize and clarify her words. Hey girls sorry if video clips are upsetting!! she wrote. Its out of context & it?s too serious a subject to talk about on a platform like thispeople who have been abused or assaulted should seek guidance from a therapist this is not a healthy place for topics this serious.
In her tweets, the actress incorrectly claimed that the panel came before the landmark New York Times investigation into Weinstein and helped kickstart the #MeToo movement. Pompeo corrected herself about the timeline leading to her comments but said she hadnt read the coverage at the time.
Okay so I was just told The Times story was out before this but I didn?t read it I only was really following the story on the news once the trial began, she wrote. Pompeo also added that she was talking about harassment not assault, and that she was only sharing her experience with Weinstein, who earlier this year was convicted of rape and other charges, and sentenced to 23 years in prison. For years before times up women had to put up with harassment and still do on a regular basis it was just part of the job as it is in a lot or all professions we couldn?t complain like we can now, Pompeo said in another tweet. If we complained we would be out and the man would stay.
Pompeo ? whos been an outspoken advocate for equal pay and other causes ? added that shes thankful that survivors can speak up now&MY way of coping w/ whatever situations I?ve been in is not a comment on how other women handle things? again Thank God we can speak up now but once again assault and harassment are different both bad but different. Not sure of harassment is seen by law enforcement as a crime.

As we discussed just before the Thanksgiving holiday, Gabrielle Union did not really leave NBC?s America?s Got Talent of her own accord. She had signed a one-year contract, with an option of two more years, and NBC didn?t renew her contract. What could have been a simple ?it?s just business? corporate decision has turned into something else entirely, as Variety (and other industry papers) have spent days documenting how Union was basically pushed out because she spoke up about racist bullsh-t she witnessed, or racist bullst which was directed at her by her bosses and coworkers. The NBC culture really hasn?t changed at all from the days of Matt Lauer. Union truly got ?notes? from producers that her hair was ?too black.? And when she tried to call out the problematic sh-t she witnessed, she was the one punished. It?s all just? awful. Union received a lot of support online, and she tweeted out her thanks:

Ellen Pompeo was interviewed by Taraji P. Henson for Variety in the Actor to Actor series. Ellen will star in the 17th ? and possibly last ? season of Greys Anatomy. She?s been speaking a lot about what the show is and was like behind the scenes lo these many years, including all the challenges and hardships. During her discussion with Taraji, Ellen didn?t mince words and declared the Grey?s set ?toxic? for the first decade it was filmed.
How did you do 15? Was there any moment where you were like, ?Child, I want off this bus??
There were many moments. It?s funny: I never wanted off the bus in the year that I could get off. The first 10 years we had serious culture issues, very bad behavior, really toxic work environment. But once I started having kids, it became no longer about me. I need to provide for my family.
At 40 years old, where am I ever going to get this kind of money? I need to take care of my kids. But after Season 10, we had some big shifts in front of the camera, behind the camera. It became my goal to have an experience there that I could be happy and proud about, because we had so much turmoil for 10 years. My mission became, this can?t be fantastic to the public and a disaster behind the scenes. Shonda Rhimes and I decided to rewrite the ending of this story. That?s what?s kept me. Patrick Dempsey left the show in Season 11, and the studio and network believed the show could not go on without the male lead. So I had a mission to prove that it could. I was on a double mission.
My husband says, ?Closed mouths don?t get fed.? But if you have to walk, don?t be a victim. If you don?t get what you want, put your big-girl panties on?
You can know your worth, but if they don?t know it, you can?t cry.
I now have three kids. And we turned the culture around. I?ve hit some marks that have made me feel accomplished in a different way. Shonda Rhimes has been amazing. She lets us be mothers. I don?t have to travel. I don?t have to go anywhere.
I haven?t been challenged creatively at all. Every once in a while we do an amazing storyline. But for the last five years, I?ve had other milestones that we were trying to achieve behind the camera.

I really appreciate everything Ellen has gone on the record for regarding pay disparity. She mentioned again in this interview that she once asked for $5K more that Patrick Dempsey just on principle because it her character?s name in the title and they simply wouldn?t give it to her. I admire her for standing up for herself and getting what she deserves. It is widely assumed that Ellen and Patrick were at odds for more than just inequal pay and once he left, it probably lessened the toxicity considerably, even though Ellen has never directly said this. Of course, those first 10 years also saw the Isiah Washington controversy as well as weathered Katherine Heigl?s dissatisfaction with the show.
Shonda Rhimes and Ellen must have a rock-solid bond because every interview Ellen gives, she throws in a line about the show that, well, just isn?t nice. I?m sure it?s all true, but I can?t imagine her boss loves hearing that Ellen has been stifled creatively for so long.

Ellen Pompeo and her Hollywood home are featured in the May/June Veranda feature story and editorial. I assume that Ellen is probably putting this property up for sale, which is a common enough thing in the celebrity world: they use these home-design magazines to promote their real estate just before they put it on sale. Or maybe Ellen just wants us to look at her house because she?s proud of it. That could totally be it too.
You can see Veranda?s editorial here. She worked with interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to renovate and decorate the 1930s Hollywood home. She?s apparently a huge fan of Moroccan tiles and Moroccan design. Some quotes from the piece:
On why she sets a table with black and white colors: ?I love black and white. It?s like a metaphor for life ? you get darkness but you get so much light.?
On dinner party guests: ??that?s really what I?m after when I entertain. I love original spirits, people who bring life to the table.?
On why she favors Moroccan style to entertain: ?I?ve always gravitated to Moroccan style. It?s cozy, and exotic and sexy. The pierced lights, the intricate tilework and patterns that each tell a story. I love how it instantly sets a mood.?

I love many elements of Moroccan design too the tile work, the colors but I feel like Ellen and her designer maybe aren?t taking the right things away from Moroccan design? The outdoor/porch table design is cute, but her kitchen is awful! It?s like half-clinical and halfway ill-functioning. Not to mention ugly. No disrespect to peeps who like a black-and-white palette, but don?t call this mess Moroccan. Moroccan style would have so many natural colors, fabrics and textures. It would have more blue too.

I only watched the first couple of seasons of Grey’s Anatomy but it’s still on after twelve(!) seasons as one of Shondaland’s staples. It also remains popular, and has been renewed through next year. Out of all the stars of the show, we probably hear the most about Patrick Dempsey, who exited last season maybe amid a scandal, and also Jesse Williams, who just speaks so eloquently about issues of race and representation. Longterm star Ellen Pompeo, 46, gets papped occasionally and once in a while we hear a minor gossip story about her, but she pretty much keeps her head down and does her work. (Unlike, say, all the drama around Katherine Heigl, although it would take so much entitlement to rival that.) So that’s why it’s nice to hear about Pompeo’s career strategy. She’s talking about it with People to promote a new ad campaign with Philosophy focusing on women and aging. (Philosophy are those overpriced lotions and shower gels with titles like Hope in a Jar, Pure Grace, and Purity.) While these ad campaigns are all about the money (I mean the older we get the more money we have, right?) I do like that they’re focusing on issues of body confidence and aging. If the cosmetic companies are going to co-opt women’s issues at least they’re helping change the media conversation around them.
?My decision to stay on Grey?s was based solely on age,? Pompeo reveals in an exclusive interview (on newsstands everywhere Friday!). ?At 33, I was wise enough to know my clock was already ticking in Hollywood.?
The actress, who says she got a ?super late start? in the industry, landing her first roles in her mid-20s, admits that if she?d been younger, ?I probably would have done my time, then gone out to search for other things.? But as her contract renegotiations loomed she ?was definitely aware of how challenging it would be to find other roles in my late 30s and early 40s.?
Ultimately, Pompeo opted to keep donning Dr. Meredith Grey?s scrubs ? a decision that, several seasons later, leaves her with no regrets. ?I thought, ?Why would I leave something that is super successful and pays me great to search the landscape?? I decided that I would stay on Grey?s and be grateful and try to ride it out for as long as I could. And I am very happy that I made the decision to stay. It?s only gotten better with time.?
The one hangup Pompeo?s had over the years? Seeing herself grow older on the small screen.
?Watching myself age on TV is miserable. To be honest, it?s the toughest part of my job,? she says.
Pompeo hasn?t caught up on any old episodes of Grey?s ? save for the pilot ? because it?s ?intense.? But the actress says she?s taking the aging process in stride.
?But as uncomfortable as watching myself age is, I don?t think focusing on physical beauty is necessarily the best thing for your mind. It?s a natural thing that we all do, but I don?t think it?s the healthiest thing. The older you get, the more you realize life isn?t about your looks. Everyone ages, and it?s okay.?
Now, Pompeo wants to help other women approach aging with a sense of fearlessness. Teaming with Philosophy, she will appear in videos (such as the below) on coolager.com that aim to initiate positive conversations about aging.

It sounds smart of her to stick to a show for which she’s highly paid and knows she’ll continue to be employed, but it also speaks to how much harder women have to hustle to get jobs in Hollywood as they age. In a similar vein it’s nice to see that older women and women of color have a home on television and increasingly on streaming media platforms like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, but what about movies? I heard a very interesting segment on NPR earlier this month contrasting the portrayal of working women in 80s films (think Diane Keaton in Baby Boom) vs. now, when they’re often relegated to secondary and supporting roles. The excuse given is that films need to an appeal to an international market, which is also the same excuse we heard Sony executives giving internally for not hiring minority actors for major roles. It’s complete horsesh-t and it’s an easy out for the people in control. The executives don’t want the status quo to change because it doesn’t personally benefit them.

Yesterday, I covered Daniel Craig?s rather amazing TimeOut London interview ? go here to recap. Daniel was in rare form, cursing up a storm and making declarations like ?I?d rather break this glass and slash my wrists? when asked if he?d like to do another Bond movie. If it was anyone else saying all of that, media outlets might have been a little bit harsher. But by now, we all know Daniel is a curmudgeon, right? We all know that he uses violent hyperbole to describe the process of making the James Bond films. Well, apparently Ellen Pompeo wasn?t familiar with Daniel?s vibe. So she tweeted this:

As we discussed yesterday, I kind of hated the Emmys. They were sad and budget and it just felt like people hadn?t really rehearsed and everyone was missing their cues and even Neil Patrick Harris was sort of phoning it in. Now everyone wants Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to host everything, now and forever. But still? even if we finally get some ladies down with some major hosting gigs, does Hollywood still have a diversity problem? Um? yes. That?s not even a question. The whole reason why Kerry Washington?s Emmy nomination was such a big deal was because network television barely puts minority actors in lead TV roles. Forget network television ? television in general, even subscription channels, rarely puts minority actors in lead roles (or any roles). And that’s why I’m slow-clapping for Ellen Pompeo today. I think it’s interesting that a white actress on a network drama is using her place even make a comment about race and television.
Safe to say, Ellen Pompeo was not a fan of the Emmy show on Sunday night. During an interview with the Associated Press on Monday, the “Grey’s Anatomy” star shared her startlingly candid views on the telecast, which featured a lackluster performance by host Neil Patrick Harris, a little singing and dancing, and several surprise wins.
Pompeo told the AP that she was “really disappointed” by the show. But she didn’t leave it there. She actually elaborated on what she disliked.
“I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all,” she said. “The Emmys felt so dated to me.”
She even had it in for the song-and-dance number in the middle of the broadcast, saying, “That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”
Pompeo herself has never been nominated for an Emmy, but she did pick up a People’s Choice Award earlier this year as favorite dramatic TV actress.
Despite mixed feelings about the actual content of the show, enough curious viewers tuned in to make it the highest-rated Emmys since 2007.

Not-so-subtle shade with the ?Pompeo herself has never been nominated for an Emmy? comment, LAT. They manage to make a perfectly legitimate criticism seem like sour grapes. And it might be sour grapes except that I kind of believe that Ellen is speaking from the heart. Minus Kerry Washington and Sofia Vergara, the Emmys were very WHITE this year. Archie Panjabi ? usually an Emmy voter favorite in The Good Wife ? didn?t even get nominated. Mindy Kaling and The Mindy Project didn?t get nominated for anything either, despite breaking new ground for women of color on a network sitcom. Don Cheadle was the only black man who got nominated in any of the acting categories too. I?m not suggesting actors of color get nominated for merely showing up ? and I don?t think that?s what Ellen Pompeo is suggesting either. I think it?s about changing the conversation about race and entertainment so that it?s more representative at every level?

Just take this as evidence that Prince Crumpets has blown every other gossip story out of the water and we?re struggling to find stuff to talk about. Ordinarily, I would have ignored these photos of Ellen Pompeo, who I have no strong feelings about either way, but I decided to write about them because her daughter is adorable and why not.
Her daughter, Stella Ivery, will turn 4 years old this September. She looks like such a happy little girl, doesn?t she? Just? joyful and adorable. Stella is mixed-race, obviously. Ellen?s husband is Chris Ivery, and they?ve been together since 2003, married since 2007. There are some rumors floating around that he has a wandering eye, but I?ve never seen anything verified and their marriage seems low-key and solid, I guess. Who knows? Stella really takes after her dad ? she looks so much like him!
As for Ellen?s weird dress? I guess she?s comfortable. It looks like she just wandered out of her house in a giant t-shirt, possible the t-shirt nightgown that she slept in, except she accessorized it like it?s a real dress.
PS? I don?t watch Grey?s Anatomy and never have, so I?m shocked to learn that it?s still on the air! How? Are people still watching it? Is it going to end after this season?
