America Ferrera is having a great year. Her powerful speech in Barbie earned its place in cinematic history as a major cultural moment and she was just nominated for her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. I?m a huge fan of America, so I?m thrilled that she?s getting the recognition she deserves. (I know I say this often but if you?re looking for a new sitcom to binge, go watch Superstore!)
Last week, America appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about the movie, her Oscar nomination, and her different experiences at Oscar events. At one point, she shared that she met Martin Scorsese at an Oscar event and was starstruck saying hi to him, prompting Seth to ask her if that happens often. America responded by telling a story about the time she met Leonardo DiCaprio and cried.
Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Friday, the 39-year-old Barbie star explained that being starstruck will sneak up on you at industry events, before she detailed one celebrity encounter in particular that left her weeping.
As she explained, it usually happens when she meets someone she had a childhood connection to, such as when she met DiCaprio, now 49, at the 2007 Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she won an award for her performance in Ugly Betty.
I watched Titanic in the movie theaters seven times. [I was] 13, 14 [years old], prime time to be in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, right? OK, so first time I went to the SAG Awards, and I had won for Ugly Betty, I had been onstage and the whole thing, she recalled. I was feeling kind of like, I belong here, this is cool.
At the awards show, she ended up saying hello to DiCaprio. And I promptly departed [from] him, went around the corner and just started weeping, Ferrera said.
And my husband, then-boyfriend, was with me and he was like, I am so embarrassed right now.
Ferreras spouse, Ryan Piers Williams, whom she wed in 2011, then encouraged Ferrera to stop crying.
I hope Leonardo DiCaprio never sees this, Ferrera told Meyers, who joked that he probably wont.?
[From People]
That is SO funny. I?ve been trying to think of which celebrity I?d be so starstruck that I?d cry if I met them and I don?t know! Honestly, I think it would be Judy Blume. There are celebrities that I?ve admired or would love to meet, but Judy?s books meant so much to me when I was growing up that I could see myself becoming emotional if I ever met her. I would also love to sit in on a Fiona Apple recording session and see how her genius works. Oh, and Gillian Anderson would definitely inspire a lot of feels. I wouldn?t have cried meeting Leo, though. I was more of a Devon Sawa girl growing up. Those five minutes he?s on screen during Casper
You can watch America?s entire segment with Seth below. They tell more funny stories, including Seth joking about which famous person he met that made him cry (at least, I think he was joking!) and which Full House star she was thrilled to have met. She also talks about meeting Tom Hanks and trying to hold it together as he said nice things to her. It?s a fun interview and she comes across as a really nice, down-to-earth person.

America Ferrera gave such a heartfelt speech at the Critics Choice Awards last night when she won the See Her award, presented by Margot Robbie. She cracked everyone up when she got to the podium, paused and admitted that she was waiting for the teleprompter to start. At one point she told the tech people to roll past a part she cut. My favorite part was when she said We are all worthy of being seen ? Black, brown, indigenous Asian, trans, disabled, any body type, any gender. We are all worthy of having our lives richly and authentically reflected. I also liked when she gave a shout out to her husband, Ryan, and clarified that she didnt mean Ryan Gosling. Americas performance in Barbie was so moving, her activism has always been on point, and this was well deserved.
In terms of fashion she was in a copper sequin Armani tank dress. I really like her sleek styling and it complements the look well.

There has been some really fun casting gossip to come out about Barbie. For instance, John Cena landed his cameo as Mermaid Ken because he just so happened to be filming a different movie at the same studio as Barbie and when he ran into Margot Robbie at a restaurant, she asked him if he wanted to come play on set for a day. We found out that Dan Levy, Bowen Yang, Ben Platt, and Matt Bomer all had to turn down roles as Ken while Jonathan Groff reluctantly passed on Allan. We also learned that Gerwig was disappointed that Timothe Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan were both unavailable to make ?speciality cameos.? But one really fun bit of casting that we hadn?t heard the story behind until now was that of America Ferrera?s husband, Ryan Piers Williams. Williams plays the husband of Ferrera?s character, Gloria. He makes a couple of brief appearances as a part of a movielong joke about him being too busy practicing Spanish via Duolingo to notice that Gloria and their daughter Sasha have disappeared into Barbie Land. Turns out, this was merely a very coincidental case of art imitating life.
We didnt tell anybody, any of our friends or family, Ferrera, 39, says of her husbands cheeky cameo in this weeks issue of PEOPLE. And it all started with an early call she had with Barbie director and co-screenwriter Greta Gerwig.
It came about because on my first zoom with Greta. I was telling her all my favorite parts of the script and all the parts that made me laugh out loud, Ferrera recalls. And I said, Oh my God, I laughed so hard when you cut to the dad doing his Spanish lessons, because my husband was literally in the other room doing his Spanish lessons.
Ferrera continues: Right away she was like, Oh my God, does he want to play your husband? And I was like, I dont know, youll have to ask him. Fast forward to when they were closer to the shoot, Gerwig hadnt forgotten about the idea. When it came time, she was like, Remember when I asked you if your husband would play your husband? And he said yes, says Ferrera. So it was really fun and it did, it made it a family affair and it was great.
[From People]
I freaking love this little tidbit! It?s a really funny coincidence. I?m glad Greta saw the humor in it as well and ended up casting Williams because this background info makes the husband/dad character all the more fun. America and Ryan both ended up moving to the UK with their children while Barbie was being filmed, which makes sense since they?re both so young (currently ages five and three) and because the production reportedly had strict Covid rules that required everyone in the cast and crew to live in the UK during the three months of filming. I?m really glad America shared this story because now it will forever be a part of Barbie movie lore.

| America Ferrera is leaving 'superstore' after five years | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I am a pretty big fan of the show Superstore. When I first started watching, I thought it would just be some middling comedy I?d check out when I was bored but it?s much more than that. Not only is the ensemble cast really strong, the storylines deal with very real issues for working class Americans, like lack of health insurance, working conditions, childcare and needing reliable transportation. The main storyline for the last season and a half has been corporate headquarters calling an ICE raid in response to employees trying to unionize. That?s a lot for a ?silly little show.? A huge driving force is America Ferrera, who plays Amy, the former floor manager promoted to manager. America is also an executive producer. Over the weekend she announced she was leaving the show after five years. She posted a series of photos of some behind-the-scenes photos of her laughing with various cast-members with the following caption:
The last five years on Superstore have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career. Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew has given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller. I?m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed in the show, and I?m most thankful to the brilliant Justin Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of Superstore and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved Superstore family.
America is pregnant with her second child and she?s executive producer for the new series on Netflix called Gentefied (which looks really good, by the way). My guess is America?s career focus might move behind the camera. She has always been a wonderful advocate she is one of the original founders of the Times Up organization and has frequently spoken on behalf of women and the Latinix community. I think, like Eva Longoria, she?s using her position in the industry to make sure there?s representation on screen, for which I loudly applaud her. She?s talented, dedicated, passionate and lovely. No matter what she does next, I know shell be successful.
However, she will be missed by a lot of us. Superstore was just picked up for a sixth season, so Amy?s departure will have to be explained and no one has said how yet. My guess is Amy will go to Zephra corporate. They can easily slide Glenn back into store manager (which works because Mark McKinney does such a fantastic job playing Glenn). I suspect they?ll break up Jonah and Amy, unless Ben Feldman (Jonah) decides to leave the show as well. I adore Ben and I love him as Jonah, but I don?t know which outcome would bum me out more because I am still reeling from *SPOILERS* the recent breakups on Schitt?s Creek and Bless This Mess. I don?t think I?m emotionally ready for another one. Even more difficult will be the Amy-Dina split, something co-star Lauren Ash recognized in her lovely tribute to America after the news of her departure broke:
View this post on Instagram
Well, huge day for Superstore. Where to even begin? The cast started this journey as strangers and quickly became family. The idea that one of our family members isn?t going to be around anymore after 5 years, well, that?s tough for me to accept. Cause the thing is, as Dina and Amy?s friendship grew, so did Lauren and America?s. It?s not gonna be the same without her. But, Superstore has always done an amazing job of reflecting real life situations and challenges. And these kinds of things are a part of life. People we love have to move away or move on all the time. And it sucks. And it?s heartbreaking. But it?s a real part of life. And I don?t know of any show better to tackle what that?s like, than ours. @americaferrera, I love you. I value every laugh and dance and song break we?ve shared. You?re my family for life. I know you are going to continue to be a force of nature in all you do, both professionally and personally. I can?t wait to see what?s next for you. Like I always tell people, I want to be you when I grow up. Rizzoli and Isles forever, my love.

| America Ferrera: People think breastfeeding moms shouldn't be in public | Added 5 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

America Ferrer appeared on Busy Tonight to promote both the final installment of How To Train Your Dragon, and her show Superstore that is finally airing a new episode this Thursday. I like Superstore, as I?ve mentioned. Most of this season has centered around the pregnancies of two of the main characters ? America?s Amy and Lauren Ash?s Dina. America?s own pregnancy was the impetus for her character?s. America gave birth to her first child, Sebastian, last May. During her discussion, America talked about how unwelcoming the world is to new mothers:
I know you had your own struggles breast-feeding your son in public
I had no problem with it at all. He was like six or seven weeks when I?d been holed up in my apartment in New York. So we went to The Met introduce him to Van Gogh or whatever. We get there and I?m like surely The Met will have a pumping room for mothers, it?s so civilized. There was nowhere, not even a bench for me to feed my six-week old baby. And so we went down to the cafeteria and I start feeding him and I got all these looks. And I just thought, oh, people think moms, new moms and breastfeeding moms and babies shouldn?t be in public. Like, we should lock ourselves away and ?you don?t belong here.? And I?m like, this is insane. So I just whipped it out wherever I wanted to. I didn?t struggle with it because I?ll do what I want where I want because I think our bodies are amazing and women are amazing. Never mind not being ashamed of what we are and what we are capable of, be let?s be celebrated and let?s start changing this b-lls?t culture, like our bodies can only be exposed when they?re being sexualized and enjoyed by men.
For the record, I agree with America. However, I was embarrassed feeding my baby in public, but seeing someone else feed a baby in public never made me uncomfortable. I?d do it when needed, but when I received disapproving looks, I felt I was in the wrong, not them. I wish Id had America?s outlook. I?d always cover us in an elaborate system of blankets and towels. I once fed my baby daughter in downtown New Orleans in the middle of July and could?ve caused heat stroke from all the coverups, the poor thing was sweating. I wish I?d been more worried about her comfort than those around me. And hell-to-the-yes that we should start celebrating our bodies for what they are capable of and not just how they are enjoyed by men. Just think about how far we could propel the body positivity movement if we took over that conversation.
Also in the clip, America talked about her Superstore character returning to work 48 hours after giving birth because she wasn?t covered by the stores health care. The episode is both really funny and heartbreaking. As America said, to most of us, the thought of going back to work 48 hours post-delivery is insane, but she was flooded with women reaching out to her who had done just that. Even though the show is a comedy, many storylines carry an undercurrent of unfortunate truth. Superstore just got picked up for season five on Monday, so good news for those of us who watch it.

America Ferrera is on the cover of Redbook this month. The photos are fine, if not a little sedated. I always feel like they don?t know what to do with America in fashion shoots, which is weird because she knows how to dress herself nicely. Plus, what is that bib ruffle doing on the front of her skirt? It looks like a caterpillar trying to camouflage itself. Anyway, I think she?s promoting the second season of Superstore, a comedy she?s produced and stars in. True story, I just started watching Superstore last week. I got some clip via a meme and it was enough to make me check it out. It?s cute. The characters are the show, Mark McKinney?s Glenn makes me laugh just by walking into the scene (although, I must confess, I am a HUGE The Kids in The Hall fan). Although a fairly strong ensemble, America is the star. She does well, too, she’s funny but also the center around which the others circle. She points out in this interview that her Superstore character, Amy, is the opposite of Betty from Ugly Betty, which I didn’t realize. Amy has resigned herself to accept the life she has where Betty, in America?s words, ?was a go-getter.? When put like that, it’s pretty easy to figure out why America identifies with Betty more.
On finding balance:
When I was younger, I felt like everything was make or break. In my career and my relationships, there was a right way or a wrong way?and I had to fit into the right box. I?ve let go of those narrow definitions and found a balance.
On stepping up and taking chances in Hollywood:
We talk about a lot of things we want to see more women doing. We want more women producers, more women writers, more women directors– and you can only say that so many times before you say, ‘I’m a woman. What’s stopping me from doing this?’ I’ve had to ask myself:Why not me?
On representing women and Latinas while staying true to herself:
It is true that I represent women, and it is true that I represent Latinas, but it?s also true that I?mmyself. My successes and my failures don?t have to have this enormous weight on them; they can just be mine. Whatever moves you forward, focus on it. Whatever handicaps you or paralyzes you, that?s the thing to get rid of.
On how there?s more to a woman?s value than her appearance:
I grew up believing a lot of things about myself that I had to unlearn– things that pertain to being a good woman, things about my weight or height… As women, you?re taught that your value is all about your appearance, not your ideas and your tenacity and your courage and your bravery and your adventurous spirit. Look, I love getting dressed up and looking beautiful. But that?s one tiny piece of me.
[From Redbook]
I love what she says about representing women and Latinas but also holding herself accountable for her successes and failures. We?ve all felt the weight of trying to achieve someone else?s success just because we ticked the same boxes as them. Something else America discussed was that all her current projects have one thing in common, “They scare me. I’ve begun to recognize that if it scares me in a good way ? if there’s a part that’s fun and exciting and a little frightening ? that’s the direction to go in.” This is where I fall short. I really don?t do enough that scares me.
I’m particularly interested in what America said about how women are raised to see their value through beauty. I’m raising a young lady and I keep thinking I am doing everything right but she is so focused on beauty ? hers, those around her. She doesn?t seem to care much about mine but aging is a big topic for her when it comes to me. Obviously, I have had my hand in this but I can?t figure out how. My dilemma at present is bras ? do we still suggest to girls to wear them or do we let them make that choice totally on their own? I know that sounds silly but I honestly cannot figure out when I am making a suggestion or passing on some ingrained, antiquated value that society mandated of me.
America is staying very busy with her activism and producing. Her bilingual web series Gente-fied just went to Sundance. Plus, and I am far more excited about this than any grown person should be, they?ve just gone into pre-production on How to Train Your Dragon III, in which she plays Astrid. *squee!*
