Some people have strong feelings about Jake Gyllenhaal. I?m not one of them. I used to like him, genuinely, but over the years I?ve just stopped caring for the most part. Some people felt that Jake was totally robbed of an Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler, so maybe his new Oscar-bait film Southpaw will get him one. I?ve seen the trailer and it looks like it?s not going to be my jam. I?m not into boxing movies in general, but I?m just not buying Jake specifically in this role. What bugs me a little bit is that Jake is trying to remake himself into a super-serious, humorless, super-Oscary dude. And I think people would be more likely to root for him if he didn?t come across like a guy who takes himself too seriously, you know? This Details interview actually opens with Jake asking ?Do you actually want to know how many sit-ups I did? Are you easing me into the question?” Like the bulk of this interview and a million other interviews he will do won?t be exactly about his physical transformation.
His physical transformation is part of his internal transformation into a character: “I believe that. I really do. But I think we all see what we want to see. If you want to see a guy who has gotten into shape, then that’s what you see. But if you want to see what I feel, I think you have to look a little deeper?People have a lot of other sh-t they have to do that’s more interesting and more important, so I don’t blame them for being like, ‘Oh, wait, how many sit-ups did you have to do?’ Or, ‘Oh, wow, what did you eat to lose that much weight?’ But you’re missing the point. Nightcrawler was ironically about the trouble with that question. It was about why people only look at how much weight you lost, as opposed to what’s at the heart of what you’re doing.?
Doing darker films: “People say, ‘You made all these changes in your life, and all your movies seem so different now. I really like the movies you’re making now.’ Which implies that they didn’t . . .”
His 20s: “I was trying to figure out a lot of stuff? We’re all told we’re going to get to a place where those things will come together, where we’ll somehow be whole or happy or whatever it is. So I went searching?.There’s a period of time in your life, in your twenties, when you’re listening to a lot of other people’s opinions. You’re not sure about what you believe in, and you’re moving in a direction that you feel like looks right to other people. And then you think, Wait, what do I feel? What do I want? What moves me? It’s not always so pure and clear. It’s not like I have my agent on one shoulder and my pure artist on the other.”
Taking real hits on Southpaw: “I got hit pretty hard in the face. All the producers ran [over]. I don’t think out of real worry for me, but just the fact that we were only two weeks into shooting. There is something jarring about being hit in the face. I don’t know how to explain it. It wakes me up. Your initial instinct is to lean out. It’s the instinct to lean in that took me five months. Hitting someone?I don’t have as much of a problem with that. But I don’t like to get hit.”
His journey: “What else is there but the journey of trying to be a good person, or a good man? In this incarnation, that seems to be my goal. It’s a complicated thing, because I think the idea of good doesn’t subtract complexities, doesn’t subtract darkness.”

So Oscar. Much serious. I understand what he?s saying in almost every quote and I even agree with him, but the way he speaks about his transformations and his journeys and all of that? he just seems like such a morose dude who takes himself way too seriously. Like, he?s still trying to prove that he?s this intense and amazing dramatic actor, to the point where he?s just boring people to death. I don?t know ? maybe a Jake-loonie will feel differently about this interview.

Well, this is just shocking! What is the world coming to when Jake Gyllenhaal can?t make it work with a swimsuit model? Jake, 33, began dating model Alyssa Miller, 24, last summer. Their first big coupled-up debut was in NYC, through some candid photos also featuring Jake?s mother (coughMotherBoycough). Their romance also featured a handful of glowing tabloid stories about how Alyssa was ?the one? and Jake was ready to ?settle down.? So? of course it?s over now.
Ladies, he’s single again! Jake Gyllenhaal and Sports Illustrated model Alyssa Miller have split after nearly six months of dating, multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly.
“They fizzled out. It happened a while ago — before the holidays,” one insider tells Us. “He’s back on the scene.” (Lainey Gossip posted a story speculating Gyllenhaal’s now-confirmed single status on Tuesday afternoon.)
“Things were really good between Jake and Alyssa right up until he had to leave for L.A. to go shoot a movie [Nightcrawler] in the fall,” adds another source. “Then the distance just really got to them.”
Indeed, the handsome actor, 33, has been busy filming upcoming thriller, Nightcrawler, in which he plays a struggling, freelance crime reporter who comes across the underground world of L.A.
Another source tells Us that Gyllenhaal “was very taken with [Miller], but I think their work definitely drew them apart.”
The big chill occurred before the holiday season. “They were apart for the holidays, and things weren’t good with them even before that,” a source says. “She’s very much a long-term relationship girl. He’s not as much of that mindset.”
24-year-old Miller opened up to Us in late October about her relationship with the hunk. “Things are good,” she said then. (As Us Weekly exclusively revealed, the couple started dating in June after they first met at their gym.)
Gyllenhaal has a long history of dating gorgeous stars: His exes include Taylor Swift, whom he briefly dated in late 2010, Kirsten Dunst, his girlfriend from 2002 to 2004, and Reese Witherspoon, his last longterm relationship, which ended in 2009. “I know people are bummed, because many thought he had a chance this time,” an insider tells Us of the actor’s latest split.

Over the holidays, I did a marathon of Will & Grace. I miss that show so much and I was reminded (again) of how groundbreaking it was for network television to have a prime time TV show with a lead character like Will Truman. Why am I bringing this up in a Jake Gyllenhaal post? I don?t know. Something about the situation just reminded me of it. LaineyGossip says that her sources think Jake and Alyssa aren?t totally over, that they might get back together. Eh, who knows? I think he may be done with her. It?s time for him to start up with a new model that he rarely spends time with, and when he does, it?s only in the company of his mother.

Jake Gyllenhaal was taken to a hospital for stitches after punching a mirror because he didn’t like the man staring back at him. Just kidding. It was on the set of his new filmNightcrawler and he did it because he got too into character. Eh, I like my version better.
“Jake flipped out,” a Nightcrawler source tells PEOPLE. “His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital.”
“The scene was emotionally charged and his character was talking into a mirror and he got so into it, he banged his hands against the mirror and it broke and cut him,” the source close to Gyllenhaal says. “It was all the scene and not because he was mad about anything else.”
Tom Cruise was right. Acting is comparable to fighting in Afghanistan. Suck it, Marky Mark.

I saw these Jake Gyllenhaal photos first thing this morning and I was taken aback by how weird Jake looked to me. It took me a moment to realize that Jake has been bearded (heh) for a large chunk of the past few years, and I had gotten used to seeing him with the facial hair. It?s been a while since I?ve seen his naked face and now that I?m seeing it? he looks different, right? Is this the same Jake? Us Weekly points out that Jake has lost weight for his new movie, so maybe that?s what?s throwing me off.
Jake Gyllenhaal is losing himself in his latest movie. Like Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale before him, the End of Watch star, 32, has undergone a major transformation for a role. On Sunday, Oct. 13, the normally athletic actor revealed a noticeably slimmer frame on the set of his new film, Nightcrawler.
The thriller, set for release in 2014, features Gyllenhaal as a freelance reporter in L.A. who stumbles upon the underground world of crime journalism. Dressed for the part in gray slacks, a white shirt, and a gray jacket, the Oscar nominee (for 2006?s Brokeback Mountain) looked as if he’d lost a significant amount of weight, particularly in his face. He also sported longer locks, which he combed over to the side of his head.
Of course, this is not the first time the actor has made over his body for a role. He famously bulked up in 2010 to play the title role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
“I was paid to get in shape,” Gyllenhaal told Moviefone of packing on several pounds of muscle for the part. “The hardest thing I think was being able to get flexible, because acrobatics and stuff like that take a real flexibility…There were a lot of times it was inhibiting because normally, if you’re a gymnast, you wouldn’t have huge, big arms.”
That said, he had a great time. “There was nothing really that hard about it,” he said. “It was pretty fun.”
Nightcrawler also stars Rene Russo and Bill Paxton. Gyllenhaal is producing as well as starring in the movie, which has a shoestring budget — but a lot of heart. “I’m producing it with Tony Gilroy,” he told Us Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival. “We’re shooting on a 24-hour schedule and we have like no money. But it’s a really solid screenplay.”

??Features Gyllenhaal as a freelance reporter in L.A. who stumbles upon the underground world of crime journalism?? So basically it?s a lot like Zodiac, only set in LA and maybe not set in the 1970s? By the way, I LOVE Zodiac. God, that?s such a wonderfully done and elegantly creepy movie. And I don?t understand why Jake would want to do a budget version of it either, considering he was so good in Zodiac.
So, would you hit it? I would not. I prefer my Jake with a beard (!) and with some extra meat on his bones. But even then, I probably wouldn?t hit it because there?s something about Jake that makes my biscuit want to close up shop. Also: I will never want to bang a dude who wears his hair in a tiny ponytail. Ever.

Starting off the work week, Jake Gyllenhaal got down to business on the set of "Nightcrawler" in Los Angeles on Monday (October 14).
Looking casual, the "Day After Tomorrow" actor sported dark slacks, a button up and sunglasses as he shot scenes for the upcoming thriller.
Though details are still under wraps, the flick is set to follow Jake as a freelance crime reporter who is exploring Los Angeles' criminal nightlife.
"Nightcrawler" is directed and written by Dan Gilroy and will also star Rene Russo.

The Emmys sort of sucked all of the other (minor) news and photos out of the water for several days, so I?m trying to get back to normal. These are photos of Jake Gyllenhaal and his girlfriend Alyssa Miller in Tribeca over the weekend. Jake and Alyssa have been together for months now ? I?m thinking it?s probably been about five months, maybe? They got ?serious? pretty quickly, and one of their first public outings was with Jake?s mom. Because Jake is That Guy Who Introduces His Girlfriends To His Family On The Second Date.
So, is this true love? Has Jake finally found the underwear model who will be the mother of his babies? I don?t know. If I had to put money on it, I would say they?ll probably break up in the next six months, but you can never really tell with Jake. In last week?s Us Weekly (print edition), there was a longish story about Jake and Alyssa?s true love and how they are the ?real deal? and all of that. Some highlights:
Since meeting Alyssa Miller, 24, at a Manhattan gym this spring, Jake has been ?smitten,? says a source. In fact, Jake has told friends his serial-dating days are over.
Jake ?is different with her than he?s been with other girls,? says another pal. ?He wants to see where this goes. They?re very serious.?
After Jake spotted Alyssa, ?he knew he wanted to be with her,? says the pal. Initially, his advances fell flat ? she had a live-in boyfriend ? but Gyllenhaal proved hard to resist. When Miller split with her man, she and Jake started dating ?immediately,? says a pal.
And quite seriously. Gyllenhaal wooed her with home-cooked meals and within weeks, Alyssa was ?head over heels.? Jake also introduced her to his friends AND to screenwriter mom Naomi Foner. Says the pal, ?That was a big step.?
Now he?s showing her off to the world. After a taping of Inside the Actors Studio, Miller leaped from the audience to greet her guy and ?he looked at her like she was the only person in the room.? And at a September 8 bash for his movie Enemy at TIFF, Gyllenhaal was seen nibbling a piece of raw seafood off her bottom lip.
Says the pal, ?He?s in love like I?ve never seen him before.?

Maybe this shows my cynicism or my strong gag reflex, but this story made me a little bit sick. You know who tries this hard? Tom Cruise. Seriously. If and when Tom Cruise begins auditions for his new wife, we?re going to be reading stories just like this. In fact, Alyssa is probably a contender for Tom Cruise?s next wife. But if you believe that Jake and Alyssa are all hearts and flower-bombs, then God bless. Maybe it IS true and the rest of us are just terrible cynics.
PS? How many different leather colors can this girl put into one outfit? Black leather boots, brown leather jacket, white leather purse. TOO MUCH LEATHER.

Is anyone still interested in Jake Gyllenhaal? I?m sure some people are. But isn?t it weird how it seems like he largely dropped out of sight for several years? You know what it was? He dropped off just after the shenanigans with Taylor Swift. That was the beginning of the end. What is painful for me is that Jake actually is/was a decent actor. He could have been a contender. He could have continued to quietly move away from the ?disturbed young adult? roles that made him famous and moved into ?real adult acting in quality dramas?. But Jake stumbled big time. He tried to be an action star and that failed. He tried to be a romantic hero (on and off the screen) and that failed too as he still has Swifty stank on his image.
Anyway, Jake is still an actor. He?s promoting Prisoners, that ensemble film with Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis and Paul Dano. I think the movie looks stupid, but what do I know? So Jake covers the 10th anniversary issue of VMAN Mag, and the interview is incredibly boring:
On discoveries as an actor: ?More and more, I?ve tried to ask myself about myself ? that?s one of the reasons I love other actors, I discover what I want to talk about when I begin to exchange with someone else. You constantly stay alive, stay awake, listen to yourself.?
On how he disappeared for a few years: ?I made a number of changes in my life ? I moved from Los Angeles to New York City, really to be closer to my family, and also ? I had made a lot of promises to myself about getting back to theater, which is what I love, and I really wanted to follow that ? so I just made this sort of big move out East, which is the opposite move people usually make, and I basically took some time.?
He?s a Method Actor: “Maybe some people can be fooled but I’m not interested in that. I think it’s possible to be intimate in your work. It means asking questions of yourself, it demands trust. And that is scary, because you never know if you are completely safe, and it’s not always pretty but I’m pretty damn sure its the only way to go. I’m looking for the roles that will amount to my expressing as much as possible. What I’m looking for is all sides of myself.”
Prisoners co-star Hugh Jackman on Jake: ?What always impressed me about Jake was his steadfast commitment to connection, His work ethic is like mine: he loves to explore, dig and extract every ounce of depth in a scene. He has the courage to follow his instincts and helps create an atmosphere where anything is possible. He is open, always striving for truth and complexity. What he has pulled off in Prisoners is extraordinary.?

Maybe the problem is Hollywood. Maybe the problem is that Hollywood doesn?t really know what to do with an actor like Jake Gyllenhaal. He?s proven that he can?t really be an action star. But I think it?s possible he could find his footing as a romantic lead. He?s incredibly earnest, he can play tragic and vulnerable very well? but Hollywood rarely makes those kinds of movies anymore. And so Jake is in a rut. Maybe it?s good that he?s going back to the theater.

Spending a leisurely weekend day in the city, Jake Gyllenhaal and new flame Alyssa Miller strolled around TriBeCa in NYC on Saturday (August 3).
The "End of Watch" star blended in in a black T-shirt, blue jeans, and a black baseball cap, while he held the hand of his model girlfriend, who wore a tan blouse and blue skinnies.
Lately, the pair have been spotted making weekend getaway trips to Martha's Vineyard, where the 32-year-old owns a home.
Meanwhile, the brunette beauty's father, Craig Miller, has noticed a change in his little girl, telling Celebuzz, "I haven't met him yet, but he must be a great guy. If she's happy, I'm happy. If she thinks he's a good guy, then he's a good guy."
