Nicole Kidman has gone and offended the aboriginal tribes of Australia, but not with that awful “Betwitched” remake like you probably thought. Nicole made the mistake of playing the sacred didgeridoo while promoting her new movie “Australia” on a German television show. The Daily Mail says
Aborigine culture bars women from playing the traditional instrument because of a belief it will leave them barren.
The Oscar-winning actress blew weakly into the long wooden instrument when she appeared on the TV show with fellow star Hugh Jackman to promote her latest movie, Australia. Aboriginal tribes were far from amused when they saw pictures of the actress blowing into the instrument.
‘It will mean she has no more children. It is not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren,’ said Aboriginal language teacher Richard Green.
Didgeridoos make you sterile and I’m just finding this out now? Jeez. And to think of all the money I pissed away on the morning after pill and back-alley abortions. And then hospital stays for uncontrollable hemorrhaging and blood poisoning after the back-alley abortions. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, you owe me like twelve thousand dollars.

| Aboriginal expert: Nicole Kidman is infertile after playing didgeridoo | Added 16 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Nicole Kidman?s new film Australia, despite sitting comfortably in the box office top ten, is not delivering all the actress might have hoped for. Now it seems that in publicizing her film she?s offended the Aboriginal people of Australia by playing the didgeridoo on German show “Wetten, Das.” Women are not permitted to play the traditional instrument under Aboriginal custom.
Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia and its star Nicole Kidman have angered Aboriginal groups after the actress tried to play a didgeridoo on a German television show at the weekend.
The light-hearted stunt flouted Aboriginal custom in many parts of Australia, where women are forbidden to play the instrument.
It followed an earlier Australia faux pas when a tourism ad associated with the film promoted a sacred site without Aboriginal permission.
Kidman blew feebly into a didgeridoo during a promotional appearance on Wetten, Dass ??, a high-rating German program known for its high jinks.
Sydney Morning Herald
I know that Aboriginal culture was taught in schools when I was a child in Australia (it still is), but Nicole is in her 40s, I?m not sure that her education in the 1970s would have focused so much on indigenous culture. She might not have been aware of the fact women should not play didgeridoo ? in fact, not all tribes follow that tradition.
Aboriginal leaders in Australia pointed out that Nicole should have known from her experience on the film Australia, and that she will now have to suffer the consequences. Some Aboriginal people think that playing the instrument makes women infertile, and that Kidman will have the same fate.
Richard Green, an award-winning actor, screenwriter and Dharug language teacher, said he was disgusted.
“People are going to see Nicole playing it and think it’s all right. It bastardises our culture. I will guarantee she has no more children. It’s not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren.”
The didgeridoo, or yirdaki, is said by some to make women infertile, and Mr Green said he feared other women would imitate Kidman without realising its dangers.

So, consider yourself warned if you are hoping for children. Although, I have never heard of this myself, and I wonder if this comment is to hurt Nicole directly, after she recently said she?d like more children. Particularly as Richard says “I will guarantee she has no more children” making it personal.
The idea of playing a musical instrument making you barren is obviously one that western culture would find difficult to grasp, but the Aboriginals of Australia have many cultural stories about how the land was formed, and traditions that explain human behaviour. It really is an interesting culture if you get the chance to learn about it, but difficult to study as all the different tribes living in Australia have their own belief system.
It?s a shame that Nicole?s film has attracted more negative attention ? this was meant to be make or break territory for the actress, who seems to be getting most of the bad press.

Yummy yummy. Hugh Jackman, People Magazine?s Sexiest Man Alive (2008), has just been announced as the host of the 2009 Academy Awards. It?s a surprisingly good choice, Hugh has always seemed like an old-fashioned song-and-dance entertainer in the vein of all-time-great Oscar host Bob Hope.
Hugh Jackman will host the 81st annual Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed Friday.
The 40-year-old Australian actor, recently named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” won an Emmy in 2005 for hosting the 59th annual Tony Awards in 2004. He was also nominated as host of the Tonys in 2005.
He’s never been an Oscar nominee, but was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in 2001’s romantic film “Kate & Leopold.” His other movie credits include 2006’s “The Prestige” and 2004’s “Van Helsing.”
With new producers, a new set director and even a new music director, the Academy has been hinting at an all new look and feel for this year’s Oscars telecast on Feb. 22.
Jackman’s selection is a departure from the Academy’s standard of big-name comedians. Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” hosted the ceremony in 2008 and 2006; Ellen DeGeneres was the 2007 host.

I really liked both Ellen and Jon Stewart as hosts, but the ratings sucked for them, so I guess I was relatively alone. In the past decade, just recalling from the top of my head, I believe the best-rated Oscar ceremonies were hosted by Billy Crystal. Let?s put our hands together that The Sexiest Man Alive delivers big-time come Oscar night. And then after that, maybe we can work on getting Ryan ?I?m a douchebag? Seacrest fired from the E! pre-show.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (ooo, fancy) confirmed that Hugh Jackman will host the 81st annual Oscars. In previous years, comedians such as Jon Stewart, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg were usually called upon. This year, however, the Academy is planning to amaze everyone with a new look and feel. Which is to say, it’ll be exactly the same boring crap just like every other year except this time they’ll have Hugh Jackman.
He’s never been an Oscar nominee, but was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in 2001’s romantic film “Kate & Leopold.” His other movie credits include 2006’s “The Prestige” and 2004’s “Van Helsing.”
It sort of sucks that the AP lists Van Helsing among his most famed movies and not the upcoming Wolverine movie or The Fountain. It’s like saying you might remember Heath Ledger from A Knight’s Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You. Yea, you probably will, but do you really want to?

He’s been in Berlin, Germany doing promotion for his new movie “Australia” all day, and come February 22nd, Hugh Jackman will be hosting the 81st Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
Chosen People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive just a few weeks ago, the “X-Men” stud seemed like the perfect choice to helm the upcoming Oscars.

She’s been enjoying her time in London as she’s been in town to premiere her new film “Australia.” And after last night’s Leicester Square shindig, Nicole Kidman opted for some English night life.
The “Moulin Rouge” actress decided to head over to the Ivy club to blow off some steam with co-star Hugh Jackman before returning to her swanky hotel.
