I know Jewel as a pop/folk musician from the 1990s who spoke to my angsty teenage self. But Jewel sort of dropped off for me in the early aughts. Recently, I discovered that Jewel created the Inspiring Children Foundation which helps at risk youth get access to mental health care. In an interview for Yahoo! Lifes well being series, Jewel talked about her new role as an advocate and board member of mental and brain health nonprofit One Mind. Jewel said it is time to end the stigma and shame around mental fitness. Jewel said that nobody feels shame when they get a cavity and need a dentist but we feel shame when we need help mentally. Jewel went on to say that we should be taught mental hygiene like we are taught dental hygiene. Below are a few more highlights from Yahoo!
Our goal is to use science, use data, use society [to] create connection all around mental health so that anybody struggling with mental health issues ? which is one in four people ? [is] able to have thriving, happy lives, says Jewel, who also sits on the organizations board. We all have to understand mental hygiene, because we have a brain! Its nothing strange. Were taught dental hygiene, and I think its bizarre were not taught mental hygiene.
She adds, Nobodys ashamed when they have a cavity ? why are we ashamed when were struggling with negativity or anxiety or bouts of depression? And why arent we taught mental hygiene? Its so ridiculous to me that thats an issue, and that we lost [our coping skills]. What do we do with pain? How do we handle having thoughts? My advocacy work with One Mind is really about that.
It was scary, the singer, born Jewel Kilcher, says of that time. And so it was then that I really realized I had three choices: kill myself, stay how I was or change ? and I wanted to change. And so my entire life has been: All right, I dont want to kill myself. Now what? What am I going to do different today than I did yesterday, so that tomorrow can be different?
She took a studious approach to improving her mental health, taking notes and experimenting with practices that, over time, shes built into an emotional fitness curriculum which she now shares on her Never Broken website.
My goal was to have a better life, have a better experience, she says of developing techniques to help her cope. And so I needed to find things that I could practice, because mindfulness wont change your life. Meditation wont change your life. It just builds the muscle of being consciously present.
[From Yahoo!]
I love everything Jewel is doing with her advocacy work around mental health. I wholeheartedly support people seeking mental health services. Going to a therapist has truly saved my life and has helped me process a lot of my trauma and issues. I also agree with Jewel about teaching people mental hygiene. Treating mental health fitness as a very normal process like exercise and biology can help alleviate the stigma around the subject.
Black people face many obstacles when seeking mental healthcare due to the specific stigma in the black community around the subject. Creating a mental health fitness routine like yoga, meditation or whatever it may be, is key to sustainable mental health. And the earlier we incorporate these routines into our lives, the better. I like the idea of One Mind as an organization because they state that they use science and data. I will continue to follow this organization now that it is on my radar. In the meantime, Im gonna see if I can meditate for an hour because that sounds like a wonderful challenge for me. I wonder if sleep counts?

Singer Jewel, no stranger to dating rough and rugged guys, is now hooked up with the man known as “Clipboard Jesus”, Indianapolis Colts backup QB Charlie Whitehurst.
The Grammy award singer, 41, and the football hero, 33, were together at Monday night’s college football title game between Alabama and Clemson. I’m sure they were rooting for the Tigers, as Charlie played for Clemson back in his college days. And, hey, it’s not like Charlie had anything better to do, like go to the NFL playoffs. I really shouldn’t mock, as I’m a Dolphins fan, and we had a much worse season.
Entertainment Tonight host Nancy O’Dell posted a photo of herself along with the happy couple on her Facebook page with the caption, “Love running in to my pal Jewel on the field. Loved her from 1st time I met her & now she’s dating a Clemson fella, Charlie Whitehurst= awesome!”

| Jewel & Ty Murray end marriage, will 'recreate ourselves in the ashes' | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Jewel broke onto the music scene when I was in college, and I remember spending evenings studying while listening to “Who Will Save Your Soul?” on repeat. I lost track of her when she went “glam,” and she’s since become a very successful country singer. Jewel married world champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murray in 2008. They have one child together, a nearly three year-old son named Kase. Now they’re getting divorced. It might not seem like huge gossip news, but Jewel has posted a letter on her website that is … wow. The letter may seem a little TLDR, but I’ve actually cut a few paragraphs. As a divorce announcement, this is kind of amazing. Jewel fancies herself a poet, and she’s gonna tell us all about her split in epic fashion.
Dear World. It is infinitely strange to write those words, especially considering the personal nature of the topic, which is the purpose of my writing today. But the truth is I have lived my life in the public eye since I was nineteen. And while it is intimidating to live a life in the public, it has also been a privilege to make a living with my words, my thoughts, my feelings … Which brings me to this highly personal announcement today. My husband, friend and partner of 16 years and I have decided to get a divorce.
Ty and I have always tried to live the most authentic life possible, and we wanted our separation as husband and wife to be nothing less loving than the way we came together. For some time we have been engaged in a private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves. Allowing ourselves the time and space to redefine what we are to each other with love rather than malice.
We have been so aware that it is easiest to use the inertia of anger to leverage two souls apart who have been bound together by so much living. By a child. But we did not want anger to burn the ties that bound us. Instead we have chosen the much more difficult task of undoing ourselves stich by stich, and releasing each other with love so that we may take on our new form: dear friends and devoted co-parents of our beloved son Kase. We have no desire to damage ourselves and each other in the process. Who better than each other to bear witness to the heart ache of redefining our family? And who better as ally, while we learn to redraw ourselves in whatever new shape we find as separate people who are still striving to be the best versions of ourselves- as humans and as parents.
Oddly the very thing that Ty and I sought in coming together is the very thing we seek in separating. We both value growth. And growth became tragically and undeniably stifled as a couple, and we believe we can find it again in setting each other free. We truly believe we can find greater happiness apart than together, and this is why we are taking the enormous and heartbreaking step of divorce.
I share all this with you because I wanted you to hear it from us, instead of the tabloids. I also share it because I have learned in these 20 years of living my life honestly in front of you, to trust that you will all honor and have reverence for how difficult this journey is, and allow us our process as we not only grieve the loss of our marriage, but also as we recreate ourselves in the ashes- for from all death we trust a phoenix rises.
Lastly, a message from us both: ??”Our dedication to our son is unwavering and we are both committed to being the best partners in raising our son. Due to the spirit in which we have gone about this separation, we trust we can remain dear friends who hold each other in high esteem, which is so important to us as parents- as we wish only what is best for our son.” -Ty and Jewel
I want to lend a hearty note of solidarity to anyone reading this who may be struggling with similar issues in their own lives. Separating is a deeply difficult and personal decision. May you martial the courage to find whatever answer is best for you. – Jewel
[From Jeweljk.com]
This letter is a real fancy way to sum up Jewel and Ty’s divorce as “irreconcilable differences,” and she has really laid it on thick. I respect that they haven’t merely issued the usual celebrity statement about how “the split is amicable.” Jewel has admitted that there was plenty of anger in she and Ty’s initial separation. She did get a little artsy-fartsy with the whole “recreate ourselves in the ashes” and “from all death we trust a phoenix rises” stuff, but this isn’t nearly as pretentious as Goop’s “conscious uncoupling“ statement. Or is it?

Apparently it was the American Country Awards last night, and normally I wouldn’t care about that since I don’t drive a pickup truck, but I’m willing to make an exception since Jewel brought along her massive jewels to the party. It’s been a while since we’ve seen them, but I’m pretty sure that we owe […]

I just watched Jewel on the Today show thinking at first that I probably wouldn’t cover that story. She has a new children’s album out called The Merry Goes ‘Round. She explained that it’s a multi-genre effort that she put together by collaborating remotely while she was pregnant and later while caring for her now three month-old son, Kase. (I still think of “cheese” whenever I hear that kid’s name, I can’t help it!) Jewel impressed me so much with her story. This may be old news to some of you, so please humor me while I repeat it. I vaguely remember hearing that Jewel went through some hard times at the beginning of her career, but I never knew how desperate it was for her. She told Kathy Lee and Hoda that she was living out of her car after her boss fired her for not accepting his sexual advances. Then she was very sick with kidney problems and couldn’t get admitted to the hospital because she didn’t have insurance.
On Kase
I hit the baby lotto. He’s just a really sweet, easy-going little boy. I’m so lucky.
On her ten year relationship with Ty Murray before marriage
I pretended it was fine, I pretended it was cool but [whispers] it really wasn’t.
On being homeless and not being able to afford medical care
I ended up homeless because my boss propositioned me and when I wouldn’t sleep with him he didn’t give me my paycheck. I got kicked out of where I was living my rent was due that next day. I thought “Well, I’ll live in my car for a minute… get back on my feet,” but I had bad kidneys and I never could hold down another job because I got sick so often. I didn’t have insurance and ended up almost dying in the parking lot of an emergency room because they wouldn’t admit me because I didn’t have insurance. I ended up homeless for about a month and I went back to singing.
I’ve always loved the song “Who Will Save Your Soul,” and now that I know Jewel’s backstory it makes so much sense to me. She sings about sexual harassment at work, not being able to afford the bills, and feeling less worthy than other people. If it takes a famous singer to remind us of the fact that there are people who are not getting treatment that they need, so be it. Half of all bankruptcies in America are caused by medical bills.
Here’s a link to Jewel’s new kids’ album. She’s doing great now and she seems like she’s so happy to be a mom.

Adding another celebrity baby to the mix, Jewel gave birth to a happy and healthy baby boy yesterday (July 11) in Texas.
The ?You Were Meant For Me? songstress and her rodeo riding hubby Ty Murray are thrilled to welcome Kase Townes into the world, after two years of trying to conceive.
Little Kase weighed in at 7lbs, 6oz and the whole family is over the moon about their fabulous new arrival.
Back in January, Jewel told press, ?I?m doing really good. I found out I was pregnant at the beginning of shooting ?Platinum Hit? so that was a little hard. I was tired but other than that I?m good.?

Doesn’t it seem like Jewel had her baby a month or so ago at least? I know she was in that scary car accident earlier this year and that she was fine, but it’s been so long since we’ve heard anything about her I kind of assumed that she had her baby and we either forgot about it or didn’t hear anything. Well Jewel and her husband, Ty Murray, welcomed son Kase Townes last night in Texas. He weighed in at 7 lbs., 6 oz. Jewel is also working on an album of children’s music. She has such a beautiful voice and I bet her son will be musically gifted too.
The singer and her husband, professional bull rider Ty Murray, welcomed a son, Kase Townes Murray, on Monday evening in Texas, their rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Kase arrived at 7 p.m. CST and weighed in at 7 lbs., 6 oz.
“Ty and I are so pleased to welcome our new baby boy into the world,” Jewel tells PEOPLE. “We are overcome with happiness ? it really is as great as everyone told us it would be ? better even!”
Jewel found out she was pregnant on the first day of her job co-hosting Bravo’s reality show Platinum Hit. “I took a pregnancy test and it was positive!” she told PEOPLE. “It was so hard to keep it a secret.”
The Grammy-nominated singer, 36, who had struggled to conceive, was hit by a fire truck in March at five months pregnant. She was released from the hospital after tests concluded she and her unborn child were unharmed.
The couple, who live on a 2,200-acre farm in Stephenville, Texas, have spent the spring converting a guest room in their home into a nursery. Jewel has also been working on a new children’s album, The Merry Goes ‘Round, out in August.
[From People]
I live in Germany part of the year, and in German the word for cheese is “kse” it’s spelled just Jewel and Ty’s son’s name that except there’s an umlaut over the a. So when I heard this name I was like “Jewel named her kid cheese!”
You can’t anticipate or know what a name means in different languages. A trip to Google wouldn’t solve it either, because when you google “kase” without the umlaut you get a lot of different results - the German word for cheese doesn’t come up until the fifth result. So no judgment to Ty and Jewel for picking that name, it just sounds funny to me and makes me think of cheese.
So how do you pronounce Kase? I’m thinking it’s just an alternate spelling for “case,” which is kind of nice.
Congratulations to Jewel and Ty on their new arrival! They’re such a nice couple and I look forward to seeing baby pictures. I’d love to see their nursery too.

| Pregnant Jewel credits her car with saving her life in crash with fire truck | Added 13 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Pregnant singer Jewel, 36, was involved in a scary car crash over the weekend in Stephenville, Texas with a firetruck. (You can see the photo below, credit to the Stephenville Empire Tribune.) The truck hit Jewel’s car in the passenger side and caused a ton of damage to the point where it looks like if someone was sitting there they could have been seriously injured. Jewel was taken to the hospital for observation, and the Empire Tribune reports that it was just a precaution and was “only due to the fact that she is pregnant.” She’s fine and the baby is fine thank goodness. Jewel tweeted that her car, a Cadillac SRX (which is characterized as a mid size crossover SUV - it looks like a half sedan, half SUV), absorbed the shock of the accident and “kept me safe.”
It was a scary accident, but things could have been much worse.
Singer/songwriter Jewel, who announced in January that she was pregnant with her first child, had her car smashed by a volunteer fire engine in Texas on Friday. Luckily, she was okay, and she took to Twitter to reveal why.
“1 thing I do know is my car saved my & baby’s life-definitely going 2 get another Cadillac SRX! It absorbed all the damage & kept me safe!” the star tweeted.
Cadillac certainly appreciated that tweet.
She also gave an update as to her health:
“Hey everyone-just got released from the ER & my Dr’s office- everything is fine-me & the baby r ok- thanx 4 all your thoughts & prayers,” she wrote. “Dr said no working out- so I’m going to take it easy this weekend. Just a little sore and banged up- but feeling so blessed this morning.”
[From Huffington Post]
Those SUVs may by safe for the drivers, but they’re not considered as safe for other cars on the road since they’re so high and can hit smaller cars right where people are sitting. (Minivans are generally safer than SUVs, although what makes the difference of course is the driver.) Jewel’s car is lower to the ground though, and it looks like she could have been seriously hurt by the height difference between the truck and her own car. At least this story has a happy ending and everything is ok for Jewel and her baby. It’s unclear who caused the accident or if anyone is at fault. You never know what could happen when you’re driving and stories like this remind us that it’s important to stay alert and cautious.

It sounds like everyone is ok, but Jewel had quite the scare on Friday (March 11) when she and her unborn baby were involved in a car accident.
According to TMZ sources, the ?You Were Meant For Me? singer?s vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a fire truck while driving in Stephenville, Texas.
?The singer was taken to the hospital and current medical tests conducted indicate that she and the baby are doing fine,? Jewel?s rep told press.
Married to Ty Murray, Jewel is two-months pregnant with the couple?s first child.
