Jamie-Lynn Sigler, aka Meadow Soprano, is now 42 years old and has two sons with her husband Cutter Dykstra, Beau, 10, and Jack, five. After originally presenting symptoms in 2000, Sigler was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2001, when she was just 20 years old. Jamie-Lynn first revealed her diagnosis in 2016, sharing that she?d been careful to hide her condition from her coworkers for 15 years. In fact, Jamie-Lynn was so nervous about making her MS public that she was too scared to look at her phone after the news dropped. Those fears were quickly alleviated when the reaction was one of overwhelming support. That was a watershed moment for Jamie-Lynn that led to self-acceptance and unlocked her superpower: vulnerability.
On the morning of Jan. 20, 2016, Jamie-Lynn Sigler was a nervous wreck. She had just married her fianc of almost three years, baseball player Cutter Dykstra, and was awaiting the new issue of PEOPLE, in which they had shared exclusive photos and details of their big day.
But she was also revealing an even bigger secret. For almost 15 years the Sopranos alum had been quietly dealing with the debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), a degenerative autoimmune disease that damages the central nervous system.
When the issue hit newsstands, Sigler was afraid to look at her phone but quickly discovered an overwhelming outpouring of positive support.
?It was a big moment for me, because it was the beginning of this journey of self-reflection and self-acceptance,? she says. ?I grew up with this idea that people are only going to be attracted to you when you?re perfect, and it?s quite the opposite. MS gave me my superpower, which is vulnerability, because the more raw and real and open I am ? and this has forced me to be that ? the more beautiful connections are.?
While she has trouble walking for long periods of time and cannot run, ?I can still accomplish the things that I want to do, whether it be at work or at home,? she says.

That is such a wonderful attitude, and sign of maturity. I know this doesn?t apply to everyone, but I think when we?re younger, we tend to have this nave worldview about standards, expectations, and what constitutes ?perfection.? We put a lot of pressure on ourselves as a result. When we?re kids, we care about pleasing our parents. As we get older and into our teenage years, we want our friends to like us. As young adults, we might stop caring so much about what others think about us, but we still may privately compare ourselves to our peers in terms of looks, career, relationships, fashion, etc.
When my older son was born, I suddenly felt like I had to stifle parts of my personality because I was a loud-mouthed NY native who was still fairly new to living in the South. I didn?t want to embarrass him or have other moms think I was weird. It took me years to work out that honestly, we?re all a little bit weird in our own ways, lol. I?m happier just being myself and theres no set rules on what people are or arent attracted to. There really is something to be said about that moment when you accept yourself for all of your strengths, flaws, and vulnerabilities. It?s very empowering. I?m really glad that Jamie-Lynn is in a good place now and wish her all of the best in the years to come.

Jamie Lynn Sigler (The Sopranos, Entourage) went public in January with the fact that she has multiple sclerosis, which was nearly 15 years after she was first diagnosed. Jamie opened up about her diagnosis to People Magazine, explaining that she can’t run, has trouble going up flights of stairs and that she gets tired easily. She also said that she took so long to go public with her diagnosis because she wasn’t ready until now. As someone who has had an invisible illness, I could very much relate to her story. In a new interview with Glamour Magazine, Sigler gets very candid about why she wanted to keep her MS under wraps, how it affects her daily life, and how it affects her sex life. She was so open and honest about it that I found myself really admiring her candor. Sigler has a new endorsement deal with an MS drug, Tecfedera, which has helped her suffer less relapses. (She has relapse remitting type MS, which she explains as meaning that her symptoms come and go.)
Glamour: January will mark one year since you publicly opened up about your MS. A year ago at this time, though, where were you in terms of deciding whether or not to tell your secret?
Jamie-Lynn Sigler: A year-and-a-half ago if you would have asked me or anyone who knew me, they would have said, ?No way. There?s no way she?ll never tell anybody.? I had been keeping it a secret for so many years, and I couldn?t see anything positive coming out of it. It also meant that I really had to accept that it was part of my life. I thought that work wouldn?t come anymore. I thought that people would see me as sick and not see me as me. I enjoyed when people didn?t know, because I thought that meant I was hiding it really well that nobody would know. For whatever reason, it felt like a positive thing for me.
Glamour: How did you come to a decision on the timing of the announcement?
JLS: I thought, ?I want to do this around my wedding,? because I wanted it to come out of a time that was positive and I?m dancing down the aisle. I?m a mother, and I have all these wonderful parts of me that I want to share. I didn?t want it to be at a time that was sad or insignificant. It would be a much better story if it went along [with something positive happening], so that was our plan!
Glamour: How did you feel on the morning that the news broke on People?
Terrified. I woke up crying. I didn?t want to look at my phone and I heard it going off on my nightstand. I looked at my husband, and he said, ?Why are you crying?? and I said, ?I just feel so vulnerable. It?s just my biggest secret is out, and I don?t know how to live like that yet.? He said, ?Alright, let me pick up your phone first,? and he started going through it and then said, ?I want you to look at this. Read your text messages.? There were friends from high school texting me that didn?t know, cousins that didn?t know, etc. because I was so secretive about it. And then there was people reaching out on social media, and it was so lovely. My husband said, ?I?ve got Beau [our son], for the day, so you stay here and just rest and process it and work through it.’ I had friends come over that brought flowers and lunch and just hung out. It was a day that I took to really reflect on my life with MS and all that I?ve been through. I read every single tweet, every single Instagram comment, and it hit me that I have this incredible responsibility now to represent a community that suffers in silence a lot of the time.
Glamour: You touched on MS affecting your sex life. Can you explain more?
JLS: First and foremost, [sex] is the last thing on your mind at the end of the day. That?s not where your head?s at. It?s a part of you that you can forget that is still really important. Sometimes pushing yourself to have sex can be like, ?Oh yeah, I do enjoy this! I do enjoy this part of me!? You?re laying down, you can definitely make it work for yourself. And then there?s physical things that affect everyone. For me, because I have bladder issues, I have to make sure I always?like, spontaneity is out the window, so I have to make sure I go to the bathroom before. So there?s certain ways I have to manage it and be responsible with it. But you don?t want to lose feeling sexy, and I can feel that sometimes, where I?ll say, ?I don?t feel sexy. I don?t feel good today.? Like, I feel dumpy. My husband is wonderful and great at making me feel good about myself?or trying to at least! But, like I said, there?s times I?m like, ?I?m going to do this for him,? and then realize it?s actually for me too.

There’s so much more in the full interview. Jamie explained that a hypnotherapist helped her decide to go public as well and that he told her “Your secret is keeping you sick.” She decided to call her publicist and representatives about her decision and they all “were so happy… They said, ‘Jamie, this is not only going to help you as a person and an actress, but you?re going to help so many other people, too.‘” That’s definitely true. Jamie says that she can’t run for exercise anymore but that she gets relief from meditation and that she goes on walks with her son Beau, 3, sometimes using the stroller to steady herself when she gets tired. She also said that when she was pregnant she felt much better and that she hopes to have more children with her husband, Cutter Dykstra, a minor league baseball player (and son of Lenny Dykstra) who currently plays for the Harrisburg, PA Senators.

Sopranos and Entourage star Jamie Lynn Sigler, 34, has worked somewhat steadily for the past few years but it turns out that it’s been extremely difficult for her. In a new interview with People Magazine, she reveals that she’s been suffering from multiple sclerosis for the past 15 years. She has it under control now with medication, but still gets extremely tired doing things many people take for granted. Sigler also admits that she has to concentrate when she walks in order to land her feet properly. She explains that she kept it quiet for so long because she didn’t want it to affect her career. She’s still not positive she’s ready to publicly discuss it. Sigler just married her longterm partner, Washington Nationals baseball player Cutter Dykstra. The couple has a two-year-old son.
Jamie Lynn Sigler… opens up to PEOPLE in this week’s issue about her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), which she was diagnosed with at 20 years old.
“I wasn’t ready until now,” Sigler says of revealing her illness. “You’d think that after all these years, somebody would be settled with something like this, but it’s still hard to accept.”
Though the Sopranos alum, 34, initially went symptom-free “for quite some time,” the disease, which damages the central nervous system, “reared its ugly head” over the last decade. “I can’t walk for a long period of time without resting. I cannot run. No superhero roles for me,” she says, laughing. “Stairs? I can do them but they’re not the easiest. When I walk, I have to think about every single step, which is annoying and frustrating.”
Working over the years after The Sopranos ended meant covering up her illness. “Sometimes all I needed was like five or 10 minutes to sit and recharge but I wouldn’t ask, because I didn’t want them to be suspicious,” she says. While MS has no cure, Sigler has “run the gamut” with MS drugs including injections and infusions and now takes the twice-daily pill Tecfidera, which has kept her symptoms stable for the past six years.
“Things are manageable now,” she adds. “It takes a fighting attitude to deal with all this. This disease can absolutely take over your life if you let it…
“I’m at a point in my life with my son, with my new marriage, it’s a new me. I don’t want to hold a secret where it feels like I have something to be ashamed of or have something to hide,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s part of me, but it’s not who I am.”

In the video posted on People’s site, Sigler adds “I want to change people’s ideas of what this disease means to them and give people hope that it’s not the end.” She also explains that she had been diagnosed with lyme the year before.
When I was around 30 and was otherwise fit I developed a sudden illness that put me in a wheelchair for about six months. I was dizzy all the time, I couldn’t concentrate and I can very much relate to what Jamie is saying about having to think and focus when you walk. I eventually recovered, having never received a diagnosis (it may have been lyme, I lived in Connecticut and used to hike), and that gives me a lot of empathy for people who battle invisible illnesses. It’s something that’s hard to explain and even I have trouble remembering how awful it was now that I’m doing well again. People see that you look fine and assume you feel fine. My heart goes out to Sigler and good for her for coming out with her diagnosis. It’s the gossip columnist in me, but I do wonder if she got an endorsement deal with a pharmaceutical company, because nearly every article mentions the medication she takes. So far there’s nothing on the website for the drug so there might not be anything to my hunch – not that I would blame her, especially if the medication has worked for her.

Giving the world a sneak peek of her bouncing baby boy, Jamie Lynn Sigler posted a photo of their interlocked hands on Saturday (August 31).
Along with the photo of little Beau Kyle, who she shares with fiance Cutter Dykstra, the "Sopranos" star wrote, "We hold hands cuz we are besties."
On August 28th, the couple welcomed their addition to the family and mommy and baby are apparently doing very well.
Back in January, the proud new parents announced their engagement and just one month later, revealed her pregnancy.

Happily expanding their family to three, Jamie Lynn Sigler and her fiance Cutter Dykstra welcomed a baby boy on Wednesday (August 28).
Though many of the details of their new bundle of joy are still being kept under wraps, the "Sopranos" star's rep confirmed to Us Weekly, "Everyone is happy and healthy."
This is the first child for both Jamie-Lynn and her baseball playing future hubby, who have been engaged since January.
Back when Cutter popped the question, a source close to the pair dished, "Jamie couldn't be happier," adding, "Cutter is the perfect guy for her. Although they have only been together for a year, they both know that this is it for both of them. They are both on cloud nine, as are their families and friends."

Celebrating the birth of her first child while giving back to the community, Jamie Lynn Sigler held a baby shower benefitting Baby Buggy at Sugar and Plumm in New York City on Wednesday (June 12).
The "Sopranos" star showed off her growing baby bump in a gorgeous half-sleeve black dress as she posed next to gifts and a cake, sponsored by Britax/BOB, Cloud B, Hanky Panky, and Serena & Lily.
Founded in 2001, the organization provides essential clothing, gear, and services to families in need, and their motto is "Love, Recycled."
It was a busy day for the 32-year-old actress, as she tweeted on Wednesday, "Off to my nephews preschool graduation, then to my NY baby shower that helps benefit @LoveRecycled ! Thank goodness for no rain."

According to an inside source, the new couple has only been together for a few days, but things are looking good so far.
"They met Monday night at the LG Infinia premiere of Keep Surfing for the Tribeca Film Festival and really hit it off. They were flirting and talking all night. Who knows where it will go, but it definitely looks like the start or something.?
