Such fun recreating this image with @peta & Bear. I?ve been lucky to be an activist alongside @paulmccartney for the last 25 years, and doing anything in his honor is extraordinary! Stop eating animals, go vegan! ??????

Alicia Silverstone has an interview with People Magazine in which she describes her life at home as a single working mom in isolation with her son Bear, 8. Some of what she said rang true to me, particularly that she is busier now than ever. I think I?m just trying to work my way out of this, but I could relate. She said she works, does some stuff with her son and the day is over before she knows it. I got the impression that her days also feel the same to her, but maybe I?m projecting. Alicia is promoting three projects: the Valley Girl musical, (that looks crazy, why did they do that?), a VOD movie called Bad Therapy, with Rob Corddry, and The Babysitters Club on Netflix. Heres what she told People.
?I?m so grateful that me and my family are healthy,? she tells PEOPLE in this week?s issue. ?But the sort of sweet part is you do get to slow down a little bit. This morning, Bear woke up and asked if we could make pancakes, and the answer was ?Actually, yes, we don?t have to run to school so we can make pancakes!? She adds, ?Then we take care of the dogs, I get some work done and we have lunch and take the dogs on a walk again, maybe do some yoga or kids? exercise, then he helps me make dinner, and there?s reading, and the day is gone!?
?Suddenly everything is coming at once,? she says, noting the she is having a bit of screen resurgence these past few years, after spending a lot of time gaining critical acclaim doing theater in LA at the Geffen Theater and on Broadway. (?I love, love doing theater.?)
?My series American Woman, and the Yorgos Lanthimos film [The Killing of a Sacred Deer] I did kept me busy for a little while,? she says. She also had Book Club and the most recent Diary of a Wimpy Kid film, plus the creepy horror movie The Lodge, on top of all the work she does on the side. She says she?s now running out of time during the days for much else.
?There?s not enough time in the day for anything, I don?t understand it!? she says with a laugh. ?I have two more books in me I need to get out [the longtime vegan authored The Kind Diet in 2009], and I love to share how I feed my son on Instagram in hopes it can help other moms feed their kids healthy and well. And then I write blogs for my website, the kindlife.com.?
As for cooking and eating clean in a time like this, she says she?s more mindful than ever of what she puts in her body.
?The fact that there isn?t school and birthday parties, and that I?m not going out to dinner is making us a little more healthy and cleaner anyway,? she says. ?There?s less that we have to balance out. But I?m really mindful that I want to keep our immune systems really strong so that we?re able to be resilient and fend off any infections and take control of our health as best we can. I?m cooking things like miso soups, kenpira stew?recipes that are really nourishing and healing.?
The best part of it is her son loves to cook with her as much as she does.
?He?s a little chef, my Bear,? she says. ?We love to cook together, but one day he turned around and just started cooking on his own. I couldn?t believe it. He makes the most delicious meals!?
[From People]
That?s a good problem to have, to be too busy. I was nodding along to that until she got braggy about how well she was eating and how her kid is cooking delicious food. Of course Im cooking more and my son is also cooking and learning how to cook and bake, but we both have a lot of cooking fails. Were also eating more snacks and desserts. Ive seen Top Chef Jr. but I still have a hard time imagining an eight-year-old making delicious meals on their own. I guess some kids just take to it though. Plus I was never much of a cook and didnt model that at home. Im decent, but I almost always follow a recipe. Alicia is vegan and very conscious of what she eats, so shes cooking whole foods every day. Did you see that video she made showing off her kitchen? Shes done a couple of kitchen videos actually. She doesnt use paper towels, shes reuses the plastic vegetable bags from the store, and she stores everything in glass jars. Thats kind of admirable actually.
In a video she posted on Instagram earlier this month, Alicia asked Bear what he would eat if he could have anything he wanted. He said Whole Foods pizza, a plate of kale and then vegan ice cream. He said he wants to feel good and that burgers, regular ice cream and McDonalds would make him feel bad and lazy. He also said he could make vegan pizza taste just like regular pizza. That must take a while.
Christian Siriano is a wonderful person.

Yesterday, when I wrote about Alicia Silverstone being ordered to pay her ex 12k a month in spousal support, Erinn commented with a quote from Alicia?s book, The Kind Mama. Alicia quoted Dr. Oz?s bad take on vaccinations as harmful to children. Dr. Oz has been condemned by his peers for the way his show promotes pseudoscience. I get that he needs a lot of content for a daily show but he promotes so much quackery and bad science. One thing he also promotes which seems slightly less harmful and more sciencey is examining poop to see how well formed it is. Like little rabbit pellets mean we?re constipated, very watery poop is diarrhea, and well formed longer poops mean our diet is balanced I guess. Plus the color of poop can be indicative of health issues. So when Alicia said her son knows about poop indicating health, it?s somewhat sensible compared to some of her other beliefs.
?He knows when he eats well, he poops well. So he knows, as a little kid, that when he doesn?t eat right, his poo changes,? Silverstone, 42, tells PEOPLE. ?He?ll be like, ?Mommy, it?s not coming out!? So he?s learned through his body and the way he feels.?
?He?ll know when he?s starting to get a little sniffly because the kids around him at school are sniffly, and he?ll say, ?I think I need to eat more vegetables, Mommy,? ? she adds. ?He?s such a healthy boy. When he does get the sniffles or gets a little cough, he?s still running up the wall.?
[From People]
I think the sum of the conversations Ive had with my kid about poop are please remember to flush. Of course when they have diarrhea you talk about it and give Imodium or even Zofran if its that horrible stomach virus that goes around twice a year. (I keep that stuff on hand now. I learned my lesson after a $600 ER bill for a saline IV and Zofran.) Alicia doesnt give her son medication either, because he doesnt ever need it since hes so healthy from being vegan. I just cant get on board with talking to my kid about his poop uh regularly. I do have an easier trick to getting him to eat vegetables though. I give them to him first, always before the main dish, and hell eat them. After that he gets nonorganic factory farmed steak from the grocery store. (Im sorry I couldnt resist! I do buy local meat from the butcher when I feel flush. Also we dont eat meat every day. I am conscious of the environmental impact. All respect to vegans, etc.)

Bear at Makani?s Waldorf School. We sat in on her play rehearsal. Bear loved!!! He couldn?t stop watching and didn?t want to leave. Random p.s..I wish we had tried the pizza at flatbread in Paia. Looks yum for Vegans.

| Alicia Silverstone says her son has 'never had to take medicine' due to their veganism | Added 6 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Alicia Silverstone did an interview with Page Six when she was speaking at a Good Housekeeping sustainability conference. Shes also promoting her new vitamin line. Alicia talked about being a vegan and how theres a greater awareness and understanding of it now. She also told them that her son Bear, 7, hasnt had to take medication ever, which she credits to their veganism. The last time I covered her she was giving Womens Health a tour of her fridge and emphasizing the versatility of tofu. This is her thing and shes passionate about it.
She credits veganism with keeping her son healthy.
?He?s never had to take medicine in his life,? she told Page Six of her 7-year-old son, Bear, on Thursday. ?He can get sniffles and a runny nose but he?s not down, he still goes to school. Two times in his life has he been like ?Mommy I don?t feel good,? and it was only for a few hours and he was back running around.?
Her big indulgence is granola
?I can?t keep it in the house,? she said. ?I let [ex-husband and Bear?s father] Christopher [Jarecki] have it at his house. I?ll make it and then give it to him because if it?s in the house, I can?t stop eating it.?
On being vegan for over 20 years
?I remember when I would go on David Letterman and go on Jay Leno and they?d be like ?Vegan?! What?s a vegan?? And they would just make a whole fun riff on it because it was like I was an alien, no one was talking about being vegan on television,? she recalled.
?I?m just so excited that there are people in the world that see it,? she explained. ?Maybe they?re going to take baby steps to get there [but] that?s a way better place then being like ?Are you OK? Are you gonna die??
[From Page Six]
To be fair to her, shes not saying medicine is bad or that other moms shouldnt give it to their kids. Shes only saying her son has been mildly sick just twice and thats it. I get not wanting to over medicate your child or use Tylenol for every headache and sniffle, but I also want to make sure my son is comfortable and doesnt suffer needlessly. Modern medicine has its drawbacks for sure but the infant and child death rate was extremely high up until the 20th century. Lets not go back there. Hopefully she would take Bear to the doctor if he was ever very sick and hopefully he has his vaccinations, although I doubt that. Ive read that her parenting book, The Kind Mama, is antivax. At least she doesnt continue to talk about that. As for the other stuff she says, its a little extreme to tout veganism as a cure all but eating more vegetables and whole foods is a good thing.

Out of all the charities out there, the only one that I think’s actually worth a damn is PETA. Not because I agree that fur is murder or that animal cruelty is the #1 biggest cause worth fighting or anything. But because, unlike all those other so-called charities, PETA actually provides an important public service: […]

| Alicia Silverstone in Christian Siriano at Women in Film: lovely or weird? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

These are more photos from the Women in Film event (Kaiser covered the other attendees here), which was held last night in LA. They were calling for diversity in film and wage equality for women, as they do annually at this event. It was hosted by the Women in Film president, producer Cathy Schulman (Crash.) I’ll just be covering some of the more questionably dressed women.
First off is Alicia Silverstone, who is 39 years old but somehow manages to look 20-something. This scoop neck spaghetti strap bronze metallic Christian Siriano dress is making her look much younger too. This is a very young-looking dress, I think it’s the simple empire cut, but her styling is perfection.
Here’s Kate Walsh in a simple v-neck black dress that somehow manages to look like a power suit. That dress is cool, I would wear that, and I like the skinny belt but she paired it with fishnet stockings and high boots. When you look at her makeup though – what was she thinking? She’s got like bright purple eyeshadow on both her lids and under her eyes with thick heavy eyeliner, too much mascara and Pink lips. If a makeup artist did this to me I would wipe it off and redo it myself. She looked much better the day before at the Cadillac pre-Oscar party in a contemporary wrap dress.
Patricia Arquette was in a plain black and white combo with a white blouse under a half sleeve jacket with a tea length skirt. This look is just too boxy for my taste. She would look better with a fitted jacket and some tailoring.
Lake Bell was in a very bizarre fishnet shirt with a bandeau bra underneath for modesty. She has on skintight pinstripe pants with too long split cuffs. This entire outfit looks like a reject from Project Runway. (Credit: my mom.) She does get points for pairing it with shoes that mimic the pattern in her top and carrying a practical purse. I always need a big purse for all the crap I need to have with me at all times.

When we last left Alicia Silverstone onher parenting journey, she was chewing up food and baby-birding it into her kid’s mouth. Now she has a parenting book out that talks about this and other parenting tips.
The book,The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning, is a look into what a person would be like if they believed in every parenting conspiracy theory, pseudoscience and new age retardation spoonfed to them. The Daily Beast was nice enough to read it and tell us what kind of crazyAlicia Silverstone really is.
1. Meat, dairy and processed foods make up toxic sludge which builds up in your uterus. You don’t want toxic sludge in your “baby house” do you? Rhetorical question. Of course you don’t or else you’d be an awful mother.
2. Being vegan means you’re immune to everything. Plants boost your odds of conceiving, allow you to have a transcendent pregnancy, help fight cancer, heart disease, diabetes and remove your dependency on pharmaceutical drugs which treat things like depression, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Being a vegan sounds great. It makes you superman.
3. Breast milk cures everything. “It’s a natural antibiotic and has almost otherworldly power to both soothe and heal.” Brb. Going to suck on a breast right now.
4. Remember the toxic sludge of meats? Well, being a vegan also cures postpartum depression. Plants are nature’s little miracles.
5. “[Y]our chichi is the most absorbent part of your body. Unfortunately, feminine-care manufacturers aren?t required to tell you what?s in their products, which means that no one?s talking about the potential pesticide residues from non-organic cotton and the ?fragrances? containing hormone-upsetting, fertility-knocking phthalates that are snuggling up to your hoo-ha.” Yea, so stop using tampons.
6. Diapers are pseudoscience. You should just let your baby poo in the grass or on the floor like a dog. Alicia did it and her kid was potty trained in 6 months.
7. Vaccines are the devil. Alicia says some babies are never the same after receiving a vaccine. She personally has friends whose babies were “drastically affected in this way.” Anecdotal evidence from a celebrity and her friends. Can’t get more scientific than that.
8. Not sharing the bed with your baby is neglect. Look. Do you want a mama’s boy or not?
9. Having a kid is easy. Just be vegan and just let it happen. “There’s no better way to make a baby than with yummy, soulful sex!” Oh… so this angry, vengeful sex I’m doing right now isn’t working? Good.

| Alicia Silverstone launches breast milk sharing service for vegan moms | Added 11 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I recently saw a random vampire comedy from last year called Vamps, with Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter. It wasn’t an excellent movie by any means, but it was goofy and cute and reminded me why I was was so fond of Alicia Silverstone. It also had some great supporting actors, including Sigourney Weaver and Dan Stevens (Cousin Matthew from Downton Abbey) before he got all skinny and weird.
My rambling point is that Alicia Silverstone still gets some work beyond the extreme vegan lifestyle she promotes, but it’s not that notable. She was also on “Suborgatory” last year. In the latest news about Alicia, she’s launching a breastmilk sharing service for vegan moms who need milk or want to share their breastmilk with others. It sounds like she’s just providing a forum for them to contact each other and that no money is being exchanged. Here’s the announcement from her blog about it.
A couple weeks ago, another mama I know gave birth to a son. She e-mailed to let me know how things were going, and she was beside herself. She’d tried to do everything so that this baby would have the healthiest, happiest start in life–she nourished herself during pregnancy with clean, kind foods; had a beautiful home birth; and planned to breastfeed from now until her son could say, “No thanks.” But because of a breast reduction surgery, she found she wouldn’t be able to make enough milk for him, no matter how much precious boobie time they spent together. She tried reaching out in her community for donor milk, but it was almost impossible to figure out what kind of lifestyle choices the donors had made. And after all that hard work keeping herself vibrant and healthy, she felt she had a right to demand better for her baby.
A lot of women unfortunately have a similar struggle, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to give their babies the most amazing start in life with clean, mean, glorious breast milk. And because we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives. It’s why I’m starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area. If you have milk to share–post it! If you are in need of milk–post it! Think of all the babies we can help raise together!
Are you a Kind Mama interested in participating in a milk share? Post in the comments below!
[From The Kind Life via US Weekly]
I’m hearing Alicia say this in that unique kind of questioning sing-song voice she has. Did you see Clueless as many times as I did and can you hear her voice in your head too?
I guess there’s a real call for this because there are vegan moms who don’t want their baby to get any milk from meat eaters, wine guzzlers or smokers. As two out of three of those things (not when I was breastfeeding, I just ate meat!) I find that a little judgy, but it’s their baby and they want the best for their baby so I get it. It’s also really nice that Alicia is doing this to help other moms and not for money at all.
If Gwyneth Paltrow is the Louis Vuitton of celebrity lifestyle moms and Jessica Alba is Coach, then Alicia Silverstone is a recycled patchwork purse from the Goodwill that looks cute with the right outfit. She posts videos where she feeds her kid from her own mouth, she’s not too concerned about the marketability of her image. It’s not my “lifestyle” choice (her word, I dislike that “lifestyle” term) but I respect how true she is to herself, and how she’s not monetizing everything. I wrote that before I bothered to check her website, where she has links to her skincare line for Juice Beauty. It’s just a line she developed for another company though. So maybe she’s more like an Etsy vegan purse manufacturer, but an enthusiastic hobbyist, not one of those too-serious hipsters who call themselves an “artisan.”
