I remember, a long time ago, reading a profile of Julianna Margulies, and they made her early days as an actress sound rather glamorous. Like, she was one of the most famous struggling actress-waitresses in New York, and everyone knew that it was just a matter of time before someone hired her for some big project and it would change her life. And boom, and it happened with ER. She was around 27 years old when she was cast in ER, but it?s clear that she was auditioning like crazy for years and truly a struggling actress throughout her 20s. As with so many struggling young actresses during that time, Margulies had some bad experiences with Harvey Weinstein and someone else in those years:
Actress Julianna Margulies said in an interview that producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Steven Seagal both tried to sexually harass her earlier in her career. The star of TV?s The Good Wife claimed that she was led to their rooms by female assistants ostensibly for business reasons. However, ?These women were leading me to the lion?s den.?
Speaking to Sirius XM?s Jenny Hutt on her Just Jenny show, Margulies recounted now-familiar tales of being taken to hotel rooms on the pretext of some official business. In the Seagal case, Margulies was 23 when a female casting director asked her to go to the actor?s hotel room at 10:00 pm to go over a scene. She was told it was between her and another actress for a role that would get her the coveted Screen Actors Guild card.
Margulies said when she arrived at the hotel, the casting director wasn?t there, but Seagal was. When she entered his hotel room, ?I saw his gun, which I had never seen a gun in real life.? Somehow, Margulies said, she got out of the room ?unscathed. I never was raped. And I never was harmed. And I don?t know how I got out of that hotel room?I sorta screamed my way out.?
Shaken by the encounter, a far more wary Margulies recounted a 1996 encounter with Weinstein. She was in her third season of the TV series ER and told that if she met with Weinstein, she would get a screen test. She was also promised that the woman accompanying her would be in the room at the Peninsula hotel with them.
?She knocked on the door, and she was standing behind me,? Margulies recalled. ?And he opened the door in a bathrobe. I could see that there were candles lit in the room, and there was a dinner for two. And I saw him stare at her, daggers.?
Margulies turned to look at her companion. ?And I caught her in a shrug ? like, ?What could I do?? And he looked at me, furious, and he took the door and he said, ?Just wanted to say good audition.? And he slammed the door.? Margulies did not get the part. And although she is now established enough to avoid future such incidents, she asked, ?What?s a sixteen-year-old actress supposed to do?? she asked.
[From Deadline]
?What?s a sixteen-year-old actress supposed to do?? That?s a question that?s been haunting me this past month. It?s clear that Weinstein ?got away? with a lot of terrible and criminal predatory behavior – we know that from the famous women who have already come forward. Weinstein was an equal opportunity predator, assaulting and harassing famous women and non-famous women. Is it such a stretch to imagine that there are many women who have yet to come forward and tell their stories, because Weinstein (or someone else) abused them when they were just starting out, when they were on their first audition or whatever? As for Steven Seagal? God, every story about him is so gross. And the woman – and all of the men and women – who led actresses to Weinstein?s hotel room need to be thrown out of Hollywood too.

Some SPOILERS for past seasons of The Good Wife
The new season of The Good Wife began on Sunday. I didn?t watch it, just like I barely watched last season. Just my opinion: ever since Julianna Margulies came on as producer of TGW in 2011, the show isn?t as good as it once was. It went from ?Alicia navigating her way through a strong ensemble with many other story lines? to ?The Alicia Show.? And making it all about Julianna/Alicia makes the show more boring and infuriating, quite honestly. Alan Cumming didn?t have much to do in whole seasons and Christina Baranski is largely wasted.
But the biggest fallout from making everything into The Alicia Show is what went down with Archie Panjabi. It was long-rumored that Archie and Julianna did not get along, and that once Julianne became a producer, there was a noticeable shift away from Archie/Kalinda having quality storylines. Archie quietly fulfilled her contract and left the show last season, and apparently the bad blood between Archie and Julianna was so awful, they didn?t even film their last scene together ? the director had to use a split screen! Shortly after that, Archie basically (sort of) confirmed the rumors when she was like ?Hey, talk to the PRODUCERS.? Of which Julianna is one. So, anyway, as Julianna is hyping the new season, she addressed the long-simmering rumors of a feud. Her answer is? odd.
File this one under the “life not imitating art” category: It has been widely rumored that Good Wife actresses Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi have had a years-long, hush-hush feud behind the scenes of their hit CBS drama. But that’s all bogus, according to Margulies, who used an appearance at the New Yorker Festival on Sunday to finally dismiss any hostility between the two Emmy-winning actresses.
“Right, I’ve heard about [the feud]. Who says that? It’s totally gossip,” Margulies said. “I heard that question had been asked to Robert King. There’s no story there, sorry ? I actually had heard [that rumor] and I feel that it has been talked about and answered. I feel people just like to have gossip or make something into something that isn’t there. There’s no animosity on my part. It’s a shame, because I wonder if it was two men, when one finds out that he f–ked his best friend’s wife, if it would get that same attention, you know what I mean?”
Despite fans and critics widely panning the use of the split screen for Alicia and Kalinda’s farewell, with many noting the awkward body language and general disconnectedness between the two, Margulies defended the scene, as well as its technical direction. “It was shot the way Robert wanted to shoot it, and the story line, too,” she said. “You also have to remember, there?s difficulty ? [Panjabi] was also doing another show, called The Fall. I went along with whatever Robert asked me to do and I did it happily.”
[From Vulture]
?I actually had heard [that rumor] and I feel that it has been talked about and answered.? Yeah, it was answered by Archie Panjabi when she basically told everyone that it was your call as a producer. I mean? is anyone really buying what Julianna is selling? It?s a shame too, because before this feud really heated up, I was a fan of Julianna and I wanted The Good Wife to succeed. But nowadays? ugh. I can?t. My impression is really and truly that Julianna is an unpleasant person to work with.
As for the aside that Julianna makes about how they couldn’t film the last scene together because Archie was working on The Fall… well, Archie tweeted this:
http://t.co/7Ci8jY9lSf. @TheFallTV was not even in production at that time and I was in New York ready to film the scene!

These days, I?m totally over Julianna Margulies. Whatever went down between Julianna and Archie Panjabi ? and something really did go down ? left a bad taste in my mouth. My gut says that the long-standing rumors were true, that Julianna acted like a princess/diva and didn?t want Archie Panjabi?s character to overshadow special snowflake Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife. My gut says that Julianna was instrumental in the marginalization of one of the best characters on TV in a decade (not to mention the marginalization of one of the best TV actresses, Archie Panjabi).
So? yeah. I?m over Julianna. Which means I rolled my eyes a few times during her interview with The Edit. You would think that with this kind of online-magazine interview (with a quick turnaround), JM would have been asked about the recent controversies about Archie Panjabi. She was not. Which makes me wonder if JM?s precondition for this interview was ?no questions about Archie.? Which makes me wonder why JM doesn?t want to talk about it. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
People love her character: ?Women love Alicia. She was an underdog. She was in a sink-or-swim situation, and she swam. People love a flawed character they can relate to. Oh, she?s messed up! I tell the writers, ?Seriously, she needs to be in therapy. She hasn?t gotten laid for a year and a half, the situation at home with her husband is so complicated, her children are leaving the nest, she has her own business and she?s completely overwhelmed.? And the writers are always like, ?Well, she?ll work it out!? To be honest, when would she have time to see a shrink anyway??
She doesn?t do Twitter: ?I?m [not going to] ask 20 million people to believe my character, then go to a mall and tweet, ?Hey, it?s me! I?m buying shoes!? However, if I was just doing my philanthropic work, I would definitely tweet; it?s a great tool to open people?s eyes.?
Equal rights: ?There is a generation coming up that understands equal rights. People fight for what they believe in ? equal pay, gay rights, all of these things that should have happened years ago. [But] we have a long way to go.?
Getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: ?As for the Hollywood Star? It still feels surreal. I always thought of it as something other people got; never in a million years did I think I would get one. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to do what I love and get paid for it. The rest is a bit overwhelming! Flattering, but overwhelming.?
Whether she has political ambitions: ?I would never and could never be a politician. But God, it?s fun to play one. I have to say things that I personally disagree with, but you have to look at things from two sides. I?ll get emotional at the snap of a finger, but my husband will read the other argument. He?s very graceful at having an opinion, rather than having a gut reaction.?
Humility: ?I never think of myself as a famous person. I think of myself as a working actor who happens to be in a show that everyone watches.?
Other people?s opinions: ?I can?t control other people?s opinions of me, all I can control is my reaction to it. Someone in Idaho may hate me, but I don?t have to know about it!?
Online comments: ?I don?t read any of it ? ?Did I wear the right dress, did I not?? ? because it?s not going to help me as a human. It will only make me feel bad?or good. And if I believe the good, do I believe the bad??
Women want to work in TV: ?Women are realizing that the most challenging and interesting things written for them are now on TV. Until five years ago, TV catered to male leads. I wouldn?t say it?s equal, but it?s getting there.?
[From The Edit]
Do people really love Alicia? I?ve watched all of the episodes through Season 5, and some of the Season 6 episodes, and I can?t really say I love Alicia. I loved Kalinda. I love Diane and I loved Will. I sometimes love Eli

She loves a good laugh, and Julianna Margulies had a blast getting silly during ?The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon? last night (September 16).
The ?Good Wife? hottie showed off her popular culture acumen during a hilarious sketch with Fallon called ?Musical Morning Announcements.?
Jimmy and Julianna played a high school principal and assistant principal who used pop ditties as a means of making their announcements more fun and appealing.
And with tunes like ?Shake It Off,? ?Fancy,? and ?Turn Down For What,? these two took things to the next level!
