I watched Westworld up until about the third episode this second season. I like shows which make me think without being total downers (see: Black Mirror), but when they go over my head I start to tune out. Westworld is so complicated that several of the actors have mentioned not being able to grasp the plot. Thats their full time job and they have access to all the scripts! Westworld is a punchline at this point. Thandie Newtons character, Maeve, is a standout though. She was my favorite in the first season (her scenes with Rodrigo Santoro!) and I was so happy that she won for Supporting Actress last night.
Thandie was a dream in a Pink Brandon Maxwell gown with a long side train. The small details make this dress, like the way its folded over expertly at the neck and how the one gathered shoulder perfectly matches the gathering at the top. Imagine the engineering and craftsmanship that must have gone into tailoring this. Also, I just googled Thandie Newton exercise because shes my age and my God, and apparently shes into yoga and light weights. Heres an interview with her trainer.
Heidi Klum must have a new stylist as she?s been killing it on the red carpet lately. She was gorgeous in an off white Zac Posen gown which looked like it was a Vivienne Westwood knockoff, honestly. It?s very elegant though and I love the way it?s gathered and draped. Heidi brought her new boyfriend, Tokio Hotel?s Tom Kaulitz, 29. She?s been gushing about him in interviews. Apparently this is the first time in a while shes dated another German person so they have that in common. Dont worry, theyre not engaged.
Kristen Bell was in a white form fitting full length Tom Ford accented with slicked back hair and gorgeous diamond drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. This dress is amazing on her and she really switched up her look with her styling. I?m so impressed with this look on her. Plus I?ve been watching The Good Place, I?m about halfway through the second season, and she?s incredible in that. The Good Place was only nominated in one category last night, Lead Actor for Ted Danson.
Kirsten Dunst was in a low cut navy Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown. She just had a baby and it shows. Her dress is classic and lovely and I have bewb envy. Kirstens fiance, Jesse Plemons, was nominated for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his work in Black Mirrors USS Callister. (Kirsten was also in that for a second!) That category went to Darren Criss for The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Kirsten and Jesse were so good in Fargo together and I love that theyre a couple now.

Thandie Newton has a new interview with Refinery29 to promote her partnership with skincare brand RoC. I’ve never used their products but they’re available at just about every major retail outlet. Thinking about Thandie has me yearning for the second season of Westworld, which has been put on a production hiatus due to the terrible wildfires in California. We still don’t have a definitive release date, but Evan Rachel Wood tweeted last month that it will return in the Spring of 2018, so fingers crossed. I would suspect that they’ll need to push that back a bit due to the delay, but we’ll see.
Getting back to Thandie, she speaks so candidly that it’s a joy to read this brief interview. She talks about the backhanded compliment “you look good for your age,” which is RoC’s tagline as they’re trying to start a conversation “about the pressures and stresses of being a woman.” We’ve seen mixed results when brands try to co-opt social causes, but they sometimes get it right. With Thandie as the voice of this campaign, RoC is off to a good start. She also talks in general terms about Predatorgate 2017 and speaking truth to power.
She hates it when people say ‘You look good for your age’
“For women over 30, there’s the addition of children and the stress of holding down a job, and most people don’t have help. They grit the teeth with their mother-in-law, support their husband, and deal with misogyny. That’s a lot of stuff. It’s not, ‘You look good for your age.’ It’s, ‘You look good for a renaissance woman holding down all those things and still managing to have a glow about you.’”
On representing RoC
“Rather than just using [this campaign] to hawk another product, they want to take this opportunity for a conversation. It’s not about the age, it’s about the pressures and stresses of being a woman. Once we realize our stressors, we’re going to seek to change those things and force society to recognize that being a mother is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. If it was paid, we’d be respected more. We should take a step back and see why people are amazed that an older woman looks good. It’s because they know how much we do. It’s not ‘for your age.’ It’s for being a frickin’ goddess despite all of that.”
On her Westworld character and discovering truth
“What I love about Westworld and that character is all the things that we normally associate with giving us better strength ? the outfit, the attitude, the freedom of speech ? they’re all denied for this character. She’s completely vulnerable and stripped of her dignity.
“To see her discovering the truth and getting underneath the lies is a metaphor for where we are right now. Getting under the lies, claiming the truth for ourselves and not waiting to be given it. That’s a lot of what goes on when you’re used to being in a system, a hierarchy, and you trust those at the top. Suddenly when we’re aware of all those lies, we search for the truth in other ways ? and that’s what’s happening now. Suddenly, there will be an explosion of women with their experiences, and ‘looking good for your age’ will be done and gone. It’s exciting.”
[From Refinery29]
There’s more in the interview about embracing her natural hair, about the soothing ritual of getting her hair done and about bonding with her daughters as she does their hair. She has daughters Ripley, 17, and Nico, 13, along with a three year-old son, Booker. (Here’s a sweet photo she posted in 2016 where she’s nursing Booker, it made me miss that time.) I agree with her about being a mother being challenging, partly because the stakes are so high. If you screw up at work it’s one thing but if you screw up with your kids you’re potentially affecting their lives and future relationships. I try to just do the best I can and not think too hard about that.
Incidentally, Thandie spoke out in 2016 about a director who sexually harassed her, she didn’t name him at the time but she told W Magazine that “A director, on a callback, had a camera shooting up my skirt and asked me to touch my tits and think about the guy making love to me in the scene. I thought, ?Ok, this is a little weird,? but there was a female casting director in the room and I?d done weird stuff before so I did it.” She later found out that the director was showing the video at his home after poker games. Claire Forliani revealed that she also had a “disgusting experience” with that unnamed director, who wasn’t Weinstein as Claire discussed Weinstein’s abuse in that same interview. Claire credited Thandie for speaking out before this current zeitgeist of exposing predators. She said she was “in awe” of Thandie’s “bravery and balls” and called Thandie “a female crusader” and “modern suffragette.” RoC was smart to pick Thandie for this campaign and hopefully they’ll let her spearhead the conversation.
Thank you Miss Rosa. #rosaparks 62 years ago today, she stayed put on that bus..

Another actor has entered the ongoing conversation about black British actors versus African-American actors. Samuel L. Jackson got the ball rolling when he complained about how a black British actor doesn?t have the same lived history with interracial dating in America, and Sam?s comments were particularly about Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out. I still believe that Sam was not ?slamming? or ?shading? Kaluuya, by the way. Kaluuya responded in kind, basically saying that he doesn?t want to put in a position where he has to defend his blackness. Sam later clarified his comments and throughout it all, I felt like it was an interesting conversation to have, as opposed to two actors sniping at each other.
I also made the point that many black British actors come to America to work because – despite #OscarsSoWhite and the systemic racial inequalities of Hollywood – there are simply more opportunities for black actors in America. The British film and TV industry is thriving, but the Brits thrive on all-white costume dramas and period pieces which conveniently feature whitewashed history. Well, as I said, another actor has chimed in. This time it?s Thandie Newton, a British actress who now lives full-time in LA.
British period dramas may be entertaining, but they simply don?t have good roles for people like Thandie Newton. In an interview with the Sunday Times Magazine, Newton, who now lives in Los Angeles, explained that the popularity of historical dramas, which tend to focus on white characters, means that it?s hard to find roles as an actor of color. ?I love being [in the U.K.], but I can?t work, because I can?t do Downton Abbey, can?t be in Victoria, can?t be in Call the Midwife,? the Westworld actress said. ?Well, I could, but I don?t want to play someone who?s being racially abused.?
?I?m not interested in that, don?t want to do it,? Newton, who will soon appear in the Star Wars Han Solo movie and also signed on for a role in the Brit cop drama Line of Duty, added. ?There just seems to be a desire for stuff about the royal family, stuff from the past, which is understandable, but it just makes it slim pickings for people of colour.?
Newton?s fellow British actor David Oyelowo recently made a similar critique of the British film and TV industry, though he added that people making period films and shows tend to ignore nonwhite British history. ?People of color have been expunged from Britain?s history,? the Selma and United Kingdom star said. ?One of the best ways to illustrate how integrated we are historically is to have a piece of entertainment that people can also learn from while they are watching it. That is why I am hellbent on period drama: We need the context so we can build, and then go on to grow.?
[From Vulture]
I get it. And Thandie?s comments echo David Oyelowo?s comments and Idris Elba?s comments and Daniel Kaluuya?s comments and who knows? I kind of think Chiwetel Ejiofor probably feels the same way too, although Chiwetel still lives in London for the most part (because he manages to get a lot of stage work too). When a British film or TV show does feature an actor of color – I’m thinking about Rose’s lover in Downton Abbey – it does feel like the worst kind of Old-Empire tokenism.
So? when will #BaftasSoWhite become a thing? Did you know that Denzel Washington has never been nominated for a BAFTA? Morgan Freeman has never been BAFTA-nominated either. Chiwetel did get nominated – and he won! – for a Bafta for 12 Years a Slave. As I was researching this story, I came across this piece from 1996, when black actors protested that year?s BAFTAs because of the lack of diversity. This has been a thing for decades. Maybe it?s time for the British film and television industry to actively search for and greenlight projects which would employ some of their talented actors of color.

| Thandie Newton would rather be naked than in Westworld costume | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

As I keep complaining about, Westworld isn’t coming back until 2018. There are plenty of other good shows to watch in the meantime and I’ll probably rewatch Westworld at some point too, which I’m fixated on because it’s just superb. Part of that are the incredible performances, particularly by Evan Rachel Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright and of course Thandie Newton. She really is the standout for me and I hope she wins all the awards in the years to come. I also hope they keep her front and center in the plot. Anyway Thandie has some new quotes which she gave in a conversation with an executive from her show on BBC1, Line of Duty. I’m not really getting the context, but she does give some food for thought and I’m imagining her saying this as Maeve in her matter-of-fact badass way. Maeve can say anything and I would nod and believe it.
‘I found myself more empowered naked than I did with the saloon outfit on
I was more comfortable naked because the costume was the most potent objectification of a woman, with the boobs pushed right up, the tiny waist. It?s an invitation for sex,
The fishnet tights, the little heels with the laces… It?s all about sensuality. It?s about eroticism. It?s about “Look, but don?t touch”.
‘It?s all there to make the invitation for sex as provocative as possible and then the promise of satisfaction is practically just there.’
A staunch mouthpiece for gender and racial equality, the British star explained that acting in the busty costume garnered a kind of unwanted, lude attention on set, while her nude scenes saw her treated much more respectfully.
Her Line Of Duty role, DCI Roz Huntley, sees her tackle an empowering female character in a different way.
‘I realised we were going to do something horribly, diabolically real. I found the most horrible shoes and pop socks that I would insist on pulling up so you could see them,’ she said of the part, which sees her play a law-enforcing professional mother, whose costumes were far from revealing.
‘Every woman will recognise the frustrations,’ Thandie said of Roz, who is a mum of two being investigated for possible corruption by AC-12.
‘In every role, in every job, every line of work, as a mother you just have to be twice as good and if you?re black you have to be twice as good on top of that,’ she went on, addressing race.
‘She?s a Senior Investigating Officer and she?s taken five years off, to raise her family and has to claw her way back to where she was. It?s a very real problem, what is most degrading is the sexual abuse that goes on whether it?s verbal or whether it?s physical it?s very tough on women.
‘Roz is under a hell of a lot of pressure and the audience sees that pressure and that allows the audience to be judge and jury, which I think is fantastic.’
[From The Daily Mail]
Taken at face value I didn’t really understand how she could be more comfortable on set naked than in costume, but if she was getting unwanted attention from crew and coworkers in that outfit, and they shut up and were nicer to her when she was naked, that makes sense. I also like what she said about having to work harder as a woman at work as I could relate to that. I’m a white woman and can’t imagine what it’s like for women of color as she mentioned. Apparently the show she’s joining, BBC1?s Line of Duty, is in its fourth season and she hadn’t seen the previous three seasons before signing on. Her agent told her to take the role as it was a great opportunity and so she started binge watching it and couldn’t stop. And now I have another show to look forward to. It’s on Hulu, yes!

| Thandie Newton in Schiaparelli at the VF Oscar party: slaying it or fug? | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Thandie Newton takes a lot of fashion risks and she can look goofy sometimes, but sometimes her risks pay off. She wore a silver Schiaparelli gown with a swirling sequin pattern, multi-color shoulder pads, a deep v-neck, and short skirt with a sheer overlay. I don’t even care that she’s hunched over and pissed off looking, I love it. Her eye makeup is weird, the styling could be improved, but this is mod, weird and lovely and I can’t look away. Good show from Thandie. I am still mad that we have to wait another year for Westworld to come back. I don’t know when I’ll get over that.
Here’s Allison Williams in Miu Miu. This is a perfectly acceptable after party dress and her styling is ok too. She looks rather tiny to me, but that could be the off-the-shoulder design of the gown.
Michelle Monaghan in a kicky Brandon Maxwell with a side cutout, wearing an ACLU ribbon. It was nice to see so many of those on Oscar night. She’s a new favorite of mine after seeing her work on The Path on Hulu.
Demi Lovato in a frou frou Monique Lhuillier gown that’s more suited for the Oscars, to which she didn’t get invited. Too bad she doesn’t have nepotism going for her, since she does have musical talent. Maybe she’ll have a song that’s nominated in a year or two. It can still happen for her.
Teresa Palmer in Vivienne Westwood. She had on a Prada dress at the ceremony with shelf boobs and this gown has a similar problem in that area. I don’t think Westwood’s designs work with heavy sequins, those bodices require lighter fabric that’s draped and folded.

| Thandie Newton in white Monse at the Golden Globes: overlooked? | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Do you know how Thandie Newton wore a really ill-fitting polka dot Monse dress to the BAFTAs? (If you missed it, go here to see.) Monse came through for her at the Globes. Look at this white off the shoulder sheath dress with diagonal burnt orange sequins creeping up the hem like she is on FIRE. This is such a simple concept executed well and I love it. I’m sad Thandie didn’t win for supporting role in a limited series, for her sublime work in Westworld, that went to Olivia Colman for The Night Manager. (I’m surprised TNM won in so many categories, but I only watched the first episode, it just wasn’t my type of show.) Slay all day, Thandie. That backwards necklace!
Kristen Wiig wore a white lace Reem Acra gown. This is yet another one of those see-through gowns with the bathing suit area strategically covered, yet the lace is not what we typically see on these dresses, it’s larger. I like this and adore her styling. She had a cute bit with Steve Carrell which Kaiser covered earlier in the Globes recap. Steve and Kristen were funny, they have perfect timing together, but I didn’t think the part about how they had the same haircut was necessary. There were a lot of dumb jokes last night and I found some of the writing in poor taste.
Kathryn Hahn was one of three women I saw in pantsuits, the others being Evan Rachel Wood and Octavia Spencer. I like this trend and hope it continues. Her suit is Brandon Maxwell and I don’t even dislike the jacket open to reveal her bra. You can only see a bit of it anyway.
Here’s Rachel Bloom who lost in the best actress in a comedy category to Tracee Ellis Ross. (She won the Globe in this category two years ago for Crazy Ex Girlfriend and she also has a couple of Emmys for her wodk on Robot Chicken.) She was in Christian Siriano, who also dressed Issa Rae and Angela Bassett last night. Siriano’s designs are hit or miss but you can tell he tries to make his clients feel beautiful on the red carpet. Bloom’s gown wasn’t amazing, it made her look very top heavy and the sequins seemed like an afterthought. She looked like she was having a good time though.

| Thandie Newton in Monse at the BAFTA tea party: quirky cute or just weird? | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Quite a few big names attended the BAFTA pre-Globes party last night and we’ll have some coverage of the fashion for you this morning. Here’s the woman who should win supporting actress tonight for her sublime performance in Westworld, Thandie Newton. She looks like she’s having fun, I’ll give her that, in this loose off-the-shoulder polka dot Monse dress. That’s the kind of dress where you don’t have to worry about being able maneuver in it or wearing any kind of foundation garments. It’s comfortable-looking although it’s like a pajama dress with some extra features to make it “dressy.” Let’s hope she brings it for the Globes tonight.
Here’s Thandie’s costar, Angela Sarafyan, in a spaghetti strap Giorgio Armani with a raised red sequin dot pattern. The added jacket and matching shoes and clutch are incredible and I love how minimal she went with her makeup. She looks so otherworldly. Not much of a rind on her.
Tracee Ellis Ross also looks weather-appropriate in a longsleeve blue Polite gown with an multicolor floral pattern and mock turtleneck. Tracee is her own stylist and she likes to take risks which don’t always pay off for her. The empire waist and half pleated skirt on this dress make it look fussy, I think. I like her double french braids.
Hailee Steinfeld, 20, was in a light blue babydoll Elie Saab with gathered sleeves. This is very 70s and young-looking. She is quite young so there’s that. Her hair looks like an afterthought though.

Excited to show off their latest film, Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor attended the UK premiere of "Half of a Yellow Sun" in London on Tuesday (April 8).
The Oscar-nominated actor looked handsome in a dark suit and white dress shirt while his gorgeous co-star wore a sleeveless black dress with a gold image of an eye on it.
In the drama, the lives of four people during the struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria are followed.
Excited for the event, Thandie tweeted, "Hollywood and Nollywood coming to Streatham tonight with Half of a Yellow Sun. Can't wait." Directed by Biyi Bandele, the movie hits theaters in the United States in July.
