Harrison Ford, 80, isn't retiring: 'I don't do well when I don't have work'
I enjoy the wording of Chris Wallace?s current show, because Who?s Talking to Chris Wallace? can have many readings, and mine is always, ?Is anyone actually talking to him?? After his woefully inadequate moderating of the first presidential debate in 2020, I thought he was going to be encouraged into retirement (hell be 76 this year). Instead he has his own show, where this weekend he hosted Harrison Ford?on the promotional trail for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, opening in theaters this Friday?and pestered Ford (who will be 81 next month) about his retirement:

Harrison Ford simply isn?t ready to retire from Hollywood.

As Ford appeared on Who?s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the 80-year-old Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny actor told host Chris Wallace, ?I don?t do well when I don?t have work,? when asked whether he?s given retirement any thought.

?I love to work. I love to feel useful. It?s my jones,? Ford, who turns 81 next month, said during the interview. ?I want to be helpful.?

?It is the people that you get to work with,? he continued, when Wallace asked what aspects of making movies he loves. ?The intensity and the intimacy of collaboration. It?s the combined ambition somehow forged from words on a page. I don?t plan what I want to do in a scene, and I don?t feel obliged to do anything. But I am, I guess, naturally affected by the things that I work on.?

Elsewhere in the appearance, Wallace asked Ford about what he meant by saying he desired the new movie to be ?ambitious? in his final turn as Indiana Jones. The actor said he wanted the film to ?confront the question of age straight-on, not to hide my age, but to take advantage of it in the telling of the story.?

?I feel very strongly that it does [pull it off],? he added, before noting: ?It?s time for me to grow up,? as he moves on from the longtime action-adventure franchise.

?Six years ago, I thought maybe we ought to take a shot at making another one. And I wanted it to be about age because I think that rounds out the story that we?ve told and we?ve brought it to the right place,? he said, opining that 2008?s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did not end with ?a real strong feeling of the conclusion or the closure that I always hoped for.?

?Speaking to this issue of age, not making jokes about it, but making it a real thing,? Ford added of his desire for the new film.

When Ford?who has been filming scenes for the next Captain America movie lately?spoke with PEOPLE recently, he said he has not lost any of his love for the film industry.

?I probably enjoy making movies more now than I ever did,? he said. ?I don?t want to be young again. I was young, and now I enjoy being old.?

[From People]

The whole episode is available now and runs thirty minutes long (although I?d wager that the actual interview time is closer to twenty minutes if you cut out the excessive use of film clips). Wallace starts out with a real winner, when he lobs the following question at Ford: ?Why is it that for fifty years people have wanted to sit in the dark and watch you?? I think that may be the most perfectly-worded question in the history of journalism. Glorious, and matched only when Wallace then asks about Ford retiring, and Ford shoots him a look that essentially says, ?I?m not mad, I?m just disappointed in you.?

Truth be told, I don?t know if I?ve ever seen Harrison Ford be such a range of emotions in such a short time frame. There are moments of giddiness, like when he shares that Christopher Walken was almost Han Solo and nearly shouts ?Which would have been FANTASTIC!?, and moments where he?s weepy, recalling colleagues and mentors who have passed. Clearly, it?s the people he gets to work with that bring him joy and fulfillment in his career, and why he doesn?t want to stop. Why should he? He also gives great credit to writers for why he?s still working so much right now. As for this final installment of Indiana Jones tackling age? I?m sorry, but all I?m seeing in my head when I hear that is the SNL take?like now he?s using the whip to help get him out of bed in the morning. Or the lost artifacts he?s hunting down are his meds. You can tell by the printing on the label that it?s an early Walgreens-era-filled prescription, before its overhaul of the DuaneReade empire? PLEASE someone at SNL write that skit! (Once the writers? terms are met and the strike is over, of course.)

Mads Mikkelsen: Harrison Ford 'is a monster of a man, a very nice monster'
Mads Mikkelsen had a lovely interview in the Hollywood Reporter to promote the latest Fantastic Beasts movie, where he has taken over the role originally played by Johnny Depp. Since I know nothing about this series or any JK Rowling series, I won?t say anything notable other than I appreciate the fact that they didn?t style Mads to look like Depp in way, shape or form. Mads is very good at promoting this kind of tricky project too, he manages to show respect to Depp as an actor while remaining noncommittal on why Depp was fired from the franchise. Mads also keeps it cute when talking about Rowling. Some highlights:

He was a gymnast & ballet dancer for years before he became an actor: ?Dancing has helped when it comes to my awareness in a room ? how heavy or light is a character, slow or fast ? but I rarely think about it. Gymnastics, on the other hand, is quite clearly coming in handy when it comes to doing stunts.?

The film never addresses the actor change: ?That was very deliberate. Everybody knows why [the actors changed]. The entire world knows why. It would almost be like an Easter egg to reality to point out we swapped actors. Hopefully we drag them in with the first scene and from there they accept this world.?

He wasn?t desperate to talk to Depp: ?I wasn?t like, ?Oh please let me talk to him.? It would have been great to touch bases, ?clean the room? in a sense. Maybe I?ll see him in the future.?

He didn?t speak to JK Rowling either: Mikkelsen says he wanted to ask Rowling why, exactly, the fascistic Grindelwald hates non-wizards so much that he wants to subjugate all ?muggles.? ?I?d like him not just to be instantly demagogic,? he says. The actor invented his own backstory for the character instead. ?My reason is that something happened to his entire family when he was a child that explains the hate he carries around. It?s a fantastic, detailed, complex universe [Rowling?s] created, and I?d love to hear her thoughts on it. I hope I will do more than this one [film].?

Social media: While he has an official Twitter account and a strong online following, he won?t be reading social media much, either. ?It?s insanity in there. You get into discussions where everything is black and white, nothing is nuanced and even the smallest word can turn your world upside down. I?m staying away from it.?

He plays the villain of the fifth Indiana Jones movie: ?[Raiders of the Lost Ark] was one of my favorite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s ? and that?s in the fifth film as well. They?re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic.?

He?s so impressed by Harrison Ford: ?It was the first time I met him, and he?s an insanely powerful person. Not just as an actor, but physically. I remember the first day we were shooting, it was a night shoot, then we stopped at 5 a.m. ? and then he got on his mountain bike and went biking for 50 kilometers [31 miles]. Harrison is a monster of a man, a very nice monster.?

He doesn?t feel stressed out: ?If it?s pressure, it?s a positive pressure. If I got nothing offered from the States, there would be a different kind of pressure.?

His love for working in Danish films, like the Oscar-winning Another Round: ?It traveled tremendously around the world because of the lockdown, millions of people watched it. Obviously there are people who don?t know what I have done besides the franchises. They might see me in one way, but I don?t. And, luckily, directors don?t.? A remake is being developed by Leonardo DiCaprio. ?If an American version of Another Round will make more people see the film than saw the original, I say, bring it on. Leonardo is a fantastic actor, so they are off to a great start.?

[From THR]

Something I enjoy about Mads is that it?s very clear, in his interviews, that he cares deeply about his films and the stories he?s telling, but he also has such maturity and perspective on everything. He doesn?t whine, he doesn?t get obsessed, there are no stories of his ?Method? antics (he?s not a Method actor). He just? enjoys his job, loves the work, then he goes home and lives his life. I love that he?s on Twitter but he?s like ?wow, those people are crazy.? And I also think he will be PERFECT as an Indiana Jones villain. Come on, that?s magnificent casting.

Harrison Ford on Indiana Jones: 'When I?m gone, he's gone'
I don?t know if I will ever be able to quit Harrison Ford. I fell in love with him right after my crush on Shaun Cassidy began to wane and Ive never looked back. And since I come from a long line of curmudgeons, this grumpy grandpa thing he has going on just endears me more. He?s currently promoting his latest film, which is ? and I still can?t believe I?m saying this ? The Secret Life of Pets 2. He?s plays Rooster, a no nonsense farm dog who hands out life lessons and tough love. I get that a voice gig is a good one for an actor who works only to buy himself another plane or two, but Harrison?s choices still surprise me. Remember when he was in Jimmy Kimmels I?m F?king Ben Affleck video? Who saw that coming?

But, the good news, of course, is that Harrison is out there doing promotion. And true to his nature, he?s doing his whole cranky-in-jest persona. When Craig Melvin interviewed him on Today, he not only found out why Harrison is doing his very first animated film at the age of 76 (nobody?s ever asked) but also who he saw as the appropriate successor to his iconic character Indiana Jones once Harrison vacates that role. According to Harrison, no one, he?s it, something he reinforces when he can?t even remember which Chris is supposed to wear the fedora.

Some highlights:

Listening to Rooster, Rooster sounds a lot like Harrison Ford

It?s typecasting. When I first came in to the recording studio, I said, ?you gave me a lot of money, thank you very much. Do you want me to do something? Do you want me to do a dog voice?? And they said no. I said, ?well, how ? what do I do?? and they said, ?be yourself.? It?s type casting.

What made you decide to do this one?

They asked me. Nobody ever asked me before.

So many iconic roles. So many films. My personal favorite ? Air Force One and that line, ?Get off my plane.? It got me to thinking, of all the roles you?ve had, all the one-liners you?ve uttered, what?s your favorite one liner from a Harrison Ford film?

?I?m sorry Mr. President, I don?t dance.? That?s Clear and Present Danger.

Indiana Jones. When you?re done with that role, who would you like to see as Indiana Jones?

Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones. Don?t you get it? I?m Indiana Jones. When I?m gone, he?s gone. It?s easy. This is a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine. I?m sorry man.

Of course, Harrison meant Chris Pratt, who is rumored to take over the role, but you just know Chris Pine was on the phone to his agent, shouting into the receiver, ?He said it was me! No take-backs!? As for actually relinquishing the role, I can?t imagine he cares that much. He was gracious to Alden Ehrenreich when he took over Han Solo so I?m sure he?ll extend the same courtesy to the new Indiana Jones, whichever Chris it ends up being. One thing I?ve always admired about Harrison is he?s practical in his approach to movie-making. He knows it?s always about money and knows that eventually, his films will be remade or continued without him. He probably also knows that every other person who takes on his roles will be compared (unfavorably) to him and that makes it easier for him to let them go.

But Harrison isnt just a gruff fusspot. When he appeared on The Tonight Show last week, Jimmy Fallon asked him about losing Peter Mayhew, the man who played Chewbacca. Harrison had already issued a truly lovely statement after his death. When he spoke to Jimmy about it, he suspended his crusty faade and, understandably emotionally, said some really beautiful things about Mayhew:

Thanks to DListed for the story!

?Blade Runner 2049' did poorly at the box office because the ladies didn't show up
I keep talking about how my mojo is off this year when it comes to predicting the critical response to certain films, and predicting the box office openings. Some recent examples: I thought that LEGO Ninjago movie was going to make bank, but it bombed; I thought ‘mother!’ would do well at the box office, but it didn’t; I worried that Wonder Woman would flop, but it?s one of the biggest movies of the year. Well, my instincts/mojo were kind of right about Blade Runner 2049. I kept seeing all of this hype for the film and I just kept thinking? but are people really excited to see it? The box office predictions were skyrocketing last week though, with B.O. experts claiming that the film would make $100 million or more in the opening weekend. Those experts were certainly helped along by the wall-to-wall positive critical response too. So what happened? MY MOJO IS BACK! Blade Runner 2049 did not do well.

It boasted an all-star cast and was touted as a future classic by critics, but Blade Runner 2049 has failed to live up to lofty expectations at the US box office, making substantially less than expected in ticket sales. The big-budget sequel to the seminal 1982 sci-fi movie took $31.5m on its opening weekend, a significantly lower figure than the $45m to $50m figure projected by its studio Warner Bros. The film, which is directed by Canadian film-maker Denis Villeneuve, is estimated to have cost over $150m to make.

?I?m disappointed we didn?t have a larger result this weekend on behalf of the owners of the film, Alcon,? said Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. ?We had bigger expectations for the weekend. The tracking and the advance sales indicated that there would be a stronger number.?

Hollywood analysts have suggested that the film?s struggles were a result of its inability to attract women and younger viewers: 71% of the audience for 2049, which stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, was male and 86% of it was over 25. Other factors that may contributed to its failure include a lengthy run time of 163 minutes, which limited the number of screenings in cinemas, and its dark, adult tone.

?It?s an intellectually charged, apocalyptic sci-fi story. It?s not Close Encounters, it?s not Star Wars. It?s a challenging film. To me, those are the best type of films,? said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. ?But does it make it the most commercial? No. It was creatively and thematically perfectly executed ? but it didn?t play to the numbers everyone thought.?

[From The Guardian]

I was going to make a joke about how women don?t really want to see a movie about a dystopian nightmare because we?re already living in that world, but really? women will support dystopian sci-fi projects (films, TV shows). Women will support those projects if there?s a strong feminist element, like The Handmaid?s Tale or Mad Max: Fury Road. What women saw from the promotion of BR2049 was that it was made by and for men. Even the ?creator? of these fake humans was a man (played by Jared Leto). I also think this shows that Ryan Gosling has never really been a huge box office draw, right? Even the combination of Harrison Ford plus Gosling didn?t mean much.

Harrison Ford & Ryan Gosling's joint interviews are unexpectedly delightful
I keep telling you guys, my mojo is really ?off? this year when it comes to box office predictions and Rotten Tomato scores. Pretty much every film that I think looks terrible is some kind of critical darling and it makes a lot of money. Every film that I think looks good has been bombing. So it is with Blade Runner 2049. I kept seeing all of the hype machine stuff for the film, and I kept thinking, ?yeah, but is anyone really interested?? It just seemed like a gigantic shrug to me. But the film is currently sitting at 94% at Rotten Tomatoes, and critics absolutely love it. Box office predictors say that the film will open with $100 million worldwide, possibly more, and that this could be the biggest film of Ryan Gosling?s career. So? once again, I was wrong. People are into it. Dystopian future films are the future!

Anyway, all of that to say that I haven?t been paying close attention to the promotional tour of Blade Runner 2049. Ryan Gosling is always pretty charming, but Harrison Ford is such a grumpy bastard, I just thought? there will be no spark as they try to promote this film together. Once again, I was wrong! They are delightful together. Their joint interviews have been hilarious and silly and they have great chemistry together. Take this clip from last weekend?s Graham Norton Show:

Very cute. But that was just a precursor to this absolutely amazing joint interview with Alison Hammond on This Morning (Gosling and Ford were shilling this movie in Britain and Europe for weeks). Please watch this, because you?ll be laughing through the entire clip. Hammond is HILARIOUS and she gets Ford and Gosling so loose.

I don?t think I?ve seen Harrison so lively and off-the-cuff in a long time. This honestly is the best thing I?ve seen all week!

Harrison Ford is a real grouch during his GQ interview: rude or he's earned it'
Here’s a photo of Harrison Ford at the Ender’s Game LA premiere on Tuesday. He looks just as handsome as always and is flanked by Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, and Viola Davis. Asa and Hailee are both wearing Saint Laurent, but I can’t find an ID on Viola’s very cool color-block dress.

Ender’s Game is the long-gestating adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s classic sci-fi novel. I haven’t read the book, which means I’m uneducated enough to make all sorts of inaccurate Hunger Games comparisons. Ford’s role is one of the military official who trains Asa’s Ender character. Harrison seems really over the movie in this new interview with GQ. Maybe he’s just over promoting movies. Whatever the case, he does not come off very well in this discussion:

You’ve had a disproportionate amount of success with science fiction: the Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner, now Ender’s Game–: “That’s three out of forty-one.”

Although it’s three of the more prominent ones, right? “If you say so.”

I was going to ask you what draws you to the genre. But maybe you don’t see it that way: “I don’t see it that way at all. It really is a very small percentage of the films that I’ve done.”

Between Ender’s Game and the Hunger Games franchise, why do you think we’re so entertained by kids killing one another? [long pause] “Beats the sh-t out of me. Ender’s Game is a very different kind of movie and a very different kind of warfare.”

Were you troubled at all by the political beliefs of Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card? “The issues that are coming up now are not part of the book, which is twenty-eight years old. So they don’t really concern me. [long pause] ‘Concern me’ are really not the right words. I think it’s better to say that they are simply not issues; his point of view on some of these issues that are getting such attention now is not promoted by or part of the story that we’re telling.”

Are you enjoying the gruff-authority-figure phase of your career? You get to play a lot of colonels and high-ranking executives and generals these days. “I don’t remember a general, but maybe I’m just not paying attention.”

Is it hard to work with CGI? “No. Acting is about using your imagination.”

Is there a trick to making seemingly ridiculous dialogue like “When the aliens first invaded…” work? “Yeah. That’s my job. That’s why I get paid.”

[From GQ]

Does Harrison seem a little rude to you in this interview? He points out how it’s his “job” to deal with unbelievable dialogue, but it’s also his job to promote his movies. If a studio wanted a star whose promotion didn’t matter, they could hire a total unknown for the role and save millions. They didn’t do that here. They hired Harrison, and he should get over himself long enough to give a polite interview. He’s not quite approaching Bruce Willis territory — although Bruce might have 1/10th of an excuse with his hearing problems. Maybe Harrison has hearing problems too, but that doesn’t mean being rude is the answer.

Harrison should be in a great mood about everything right now. He’s almost certainly (“without a doubt“) going to play Han Solo in Star Wars Episode VII.” Yes I think of Star Wars and sci-fi when I think of Harrison Ford. He should stop complaining about that too.

FYI: Harrison Ford shaved his head and now he looks like Ben Kinglsey
These are two new photos of Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman in Philadelphia, where they?ve been filming their new movie (Paranoia), and they posed for photos when they went out to eat together. So? this is just your FYI: this is what Harrison Ford looks like these days. I know, it gets kind of depressing, especially on the heels of what Ralph Fiennes looks like these days. Much like Ralph?s unfortunate look, I suspect that part of Harrison?s vibe might be specifically for the film. He must have shave his head, right? Because just a few months ago (back in April), he looked like this:

Still grizzled, obviously. With hair, Harrison seems like an aging rancher or cowboy, leathery from working in the sun for decades. Without hair, Harrison seems? like, Ben Kingsley or something. Which isn?t bad at all ? I love Ben Kingsley. But I never thought Harrison Ford would give me Ben Kinglsey vibes. Incidentally, Harrison Ford turned 70 years old a month ago. I?d say he looks pretty well-preserved for 70.

Also ? I end up thinking about Harrison whenever I watch White Collar. Does Tim DeKay remind anyone else of a young Harrison? That?s one of the reasons I?m still watching White Collar ? my love of Americana beefcake like Tim DeKay.

Last thing ? Gary Oldman looks really hot, right?

"Cowboys & Aliens" Stars Step Out at Locarno Film Fest
Added 12 years agoSource: Celebrity Gossip

Teaming up for overseas press efforts, the cast of "Cowboys & Aliens" stepped out for a photocall during the 64th Festival del Film di Locarno in Locarno, Switzerland on Saturday (August 6).

With Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde all on-hand, the trio of stars joined director Jon Favreau for the annual film festival showcase screening of their new action film.

Tweeting about the appearance, Miss Wilde wrote, "Cowboys screening for 8,000 in the Piazza Grande a the Locarno Fest tonight. prepping my speech in Swiss, Italian, and Apache just in case."

Realizing that there isn't such a thing as a Swiss language, the 27-year-old actress later posted a message reading, "oh good, turns out there's no Swiss language. that makes things simpler. i'll throw in Cantonese just to keep things interesting."

The Locarno appearance comes as "Cowboys & Aliens" continues to fare well at the box office - as it's currently in third place this weekend with a projected two week take of $66 million.
