Yesterday we heard that Alec Baldwin had some sort of medical emergency, initially thought to be an overdose, for which his daughter called 911. He was rushed to the hospital, released shortly afterwards, and his rep called it all a “misunderstanding.” Kaiser speculated that Alec might have threatened to take some pills, had an Ambien, and then caused his daughter to worry when she went to check up on him. It turns out that Alec did have an Ambien, but that his daughter probably wasn’t even with him when she called 911. Fox News reports that “A source familiar with the situation now tells Fox411 that Ireland was not with her father in New York at the time of the 911 call.”
The NY Daily News has more, including the details that Alec and Ireland were fighting over the phone and that it was Alec’s ex wife, Kim Bassinger, who encouraged her daughter to call 911:
At 12:55 a.m. [Baldwin] was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital after his 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, dialed 911, sources said.
“I’m tired of this,” Baldwin said, his daughter told the dispatcher. “I’m going to take some pills. I’m going to end this.”
When cops arrived at Baldwin’s pad on Central Park West, the actor told them he took an Ambien sleeping pill and had “no intention” of committing suicide, sources said.
Baldwin, who is due to emcee the Oscars on March 7, told cops he and Ireland had been arguing over the phone and that his daughter was “put up” to dial 911 by her mom, actress Kim Basinger, sources said.
Still, cops had Baldwin checked out and doctors released him after deciding he was no threat to himself, sources said.
When the “30 Rock” star returned home, he found reporters on his doorstep.
“This is another example of Kim’s sickness,” a buddy of Baldwin’s told the Daily News. “Alec came back from the hospital and there were cameras outside his house at 2 a.m. Gee, I wonder how they found out?”
Baldwin went to work at 7 a.m., and when he came home around 5:30 p.m. the reporters were still there.

What’s more is that Baldwin is said to have flipped out at a paparazzo waiting for him outside his place in New York after he got off work at 5:30. Supposedly a photographer only “lightly tapped Baldwin on the arm,” and Baldwin yelled “Don’t touch me! I’m calling the cops!” Given the things that paparazzi shout at celebrities, the guy probably talked some smack before Baldwin yelled at him. It’s not like Baldwin launched into a tirade and his response sounds pretty normal given the situation. The NY Daily News doesn’t have much evidence of this on their website, and only has a video of a disheveled-looking Baldwin being led into his building by the doorman. There’s a photo at the top of the article, but it shows the photographer looking upset while Baldwin appears pretty calm. I saw some more photos on photo agency INF’s website, and Alec does look like he’s grabbing the photographer. The guy definitely has a well established anger management problem, but unless I saw the video I wouldn’t be able to judge if his response was over the top.
Was Baldwin’s ex out to give him a hard time or were his ex wife and daughter genuinely concerned for his well being? It’s hard to tell given their complicated, acrimonious history. The fact that Bassinger probably alerted the media doesn’t make it seem like she has Baldwin’s best interests at heart.

Alec Baldwin was rushed to the ER yesterday after his 14-year old daughter found him “unresponsive” following an argument. Yahoo News says
Alec Baldwin, a star of NBC’s “30 Rock,” was examined Thursday at a hospital after his daughter called 911 saying he had threatened to take pills after they argued, a law enforcement official said. Baldwin’s daughter called 911 at around 12:10 a.m. from his Central Park West apartment.
“This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part. Alec was quickly released from the hospital; he’s completely fine and will be at work today,” the 51-year-old actor’s spokesman said.
It’s a classic parenting technique. She complains about her curfew, you threaten suicide and take enough pills to temporarily black out. It’s like reverse psychology, only way more insaner. Following a fracas that landed him in the hospital, Alec Baldwin is said to be “completely fine” and has been released from doctors’ care.
The “30 Rock” actor was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City earlier today after his daughter Ireland called 911 and asked for an ambulance.
Baldwin’s 14-year-old revealed that they’d had an argument and that Alec was threatening to take pills. Later she found him to be ‘unresponsive’ and called for help.
According to Baldwin’s rep, “This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part. Alec was quickly released from the hospital he’s completely fine and will be at work today.”

The Academy Awards have announced the 2010 hosts! They?ve named Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin as co-hosts of this awards season?s festivities. There were some rumors going around that the gig had been offered to 2009 Oscars host Hugh Jackman, who turned it down. There was also some mention that Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Stewart and Ricky Gervais might have gotten calls, or gotten mentioned in some meetings, but I don?t really believe any of them were seriously considered. Steve has hosted (solo) twice before, but this will Alec?s first time.
There are two hosts for the Oscars this year: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” Martin, 64, says in a statement.
Adds Baldwin, 51, “I don’t play the banjo, but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars ? it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Martin previously hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards. Baldwin was nominated for a 2003 supporting actor nominee for The Cooler.
Both have hosted Saturday Night Live.
“We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said show producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”
The 82nd Academy Awards air Sunday, March 7, on ABC.

Steve Martin is actually one of my favorite Oscar hosts of the past decade. I found him to be very witty, dry and professional during his previous hosting duties, and I think he?ll shine again with Alec as co-host. If they attempt any song-and-dance numbers (like Hugh Jackman did earlier this year), you know it will be chaos. Now if we can only get the Academy to not jam 50 pounds of crap into a five pound bag.

When the now-infamous ?rude, thoughtless little pig? voicemail message Alec Baldwin left his daughter was first made public, Alec waited until the media outlets had finished dancing around, and then quietly gave a public apology. His explanation then was that he was simply angry and frustrated with his daughter, his ex-wife Kim Basinger, and with the legal system on the whole.
Alec is now talking about the whole incident extensively with Playboy (story via People). Alec claims that in the immediate aftermath of the tape?s release, he was suicidal. He even claims to have gotten professional help, and says that his reasoning for not committing suicide was that ?If I committed suicide, [Kim Basinger's side] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal.? Yikes. He?s basically saying he didn?t commit suicide because that?s just what Kim Basinger wanted - his dead body. He also talks about how he will never again appear on The Today Show, because Matt Lauer spoke to Harvey Levin about the tape without even calling Alec. That I understand:
It was the private voicemail message not meant to be shared and yet ended up being heard by nearly everyone ? Alec Baldwin’s angry April 2007 tirade against his daughter, Ireland, accusing the then-11-year-old of being a “rude little pig” who needed to have her “ass straightened out” after she had “humiliated me for the last time.”
Only now, as the Emmy-winning 30 Rock star admits in a candid interview with Playboy for its July/August issue (on newsstands and online Friday), after the phone message was exposed, he contemplated killing himself.
At the time of the voicemail, Baldwin and his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, were in the sixth year of their bitter custody battle over the child. In the wake of public outrage about the contents of the message, Baldwin set about repairing his public image, apologizing during an appearance on The View and writing an advice book for divorced fathers, A Promise to Ourselves. But reaching those points proved an arduous climb.
Describing his thoughts of killing himself as “very serious,” Baldwin, 51, says, “I spoke to a lot of professionals, who helped me ? If I committed suicide, [Kim Basinger's side] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal.”
His self-destructive state of mind was such, recalls Baldwin, that he also offered to quit 30 Rock and actually went ahead and ? briefly ? dropped his agent, who also represented Basinger.
As for why Baldwin chose The View as his platform to unburden himself, he says, “Whoopi Goldberg is a friend. I called her and said, ‘Do you think I can get a fair shake?’ Because when you talk about family law and parental alienation, there is this unfortunate gender-based dynamic. Could I walk into a show with a strong female audience? Would they understand my point of view? I trusted Whoopi and Barbara Walters. Whoopi is an impeccably decent person, and I am grateful she gave me a forum.”
In the course of his Playboy interview, Baldwin does not share similar sentiments about some others in the media, whom he has yet to forgive for the roles they played at the time of the controversy. He calls producer Harvey Levin of TMZ ? which first made the voicemail public ? “a human tumor, a graceless character who lives in that weird netherworld.”
Nor will Baldwin agree to appear on his own network’s top-rated morning program. “I’m on an NBC show, and Today was considered vital,” says the actor, who will also soon be seen with Cameron Diaz in the movie My Sister’s Keeper. “But when that voicemail tape thing happened, Matt Lauer interviewed [Harvey] Levin before he even called me. Lauer put Levin on Today, and they never phoned me. When it’s in their interest to reach me, they know how. I saw that and said, ‘My relationship with the Today show is over.’ I’ll never do Today again, ever. Life’s too short.”

I totally get Alec?s media complaints, and I understand the Matt Lauer stuff. I don?t think Alec is in the wrong on that count - and it?s totally his call which media outlets he will speak to. But back to the crux of the issue - the tape, the aftermath and what it says about Alec. Personally, I understood his frustration and anger in general about the never-ending divorce and custody battle between him and Kim, but I thought the message crossed the line into verbal abuse. I can?t even imagine having a father who would take out a nasty divorce on his kid in that way, and that?s coming from an only child of a nasty divorce. My thoughts on Alec are currently that he?s a brilliant actor with a pretty screwed up personality and personal life. I can watch 30 Rock, and I generally avoid interviews with him. That?s my compromise.

Alec Baldwin?s been sticking his foot in his mouth a lot more than usual lately ? at least when it comes to his off-color jokes. Last week he was on ?Late Night? and told David Letterman he wanted more kids. But after his bad experience with ex-wife Kim Basinger, Baldwin is apparently reluctant to marry again. Or at least to marry an American woman. He joked that he was considering getting a Filipino mail-order bride ? and the result was a threatened beat-down from a Filipino senator.
~Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin’s comment was “insensitive and uncalled for” and an insult to millions of Filipinos. He called the actor “arrogant” and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.
“Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he’ll see mayhem,” Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

Though Baldwin isn?t the type to be pushed around easily, he clearly realized he?d crossed a line. Or perhaps it was the threat of a beating ? but he did apologize.
I’d like to offer an apology and a clarification to remarks I made recently.
While on the David Letterman program, I joked that I might need a “mail-order bride” to achieve the goal of having more children in my life. I believe that most people understood that this was a joke and took it as such. (A dated reference, no doubt, and another sign of my advancing age.) However, I do apologize to anyone who took offense. The comments of some Philippine government officials come as no surprise to me, either. Even the one by a former action film star-turned-Senator who beckoned me to come to the Philippines so he could “beat” me over my comment.
Such anger and frustration about the issue of sex trafficking is understandable. The Philippines has suffered significant problems with the issue of sex trafficking and I would like to turn your attention to the work of an organization called Love146 that my brother Stephen educated me about. This was only one of several of Baldwin?s ?holy crap why?d he say that? jokes. He also joked about his relationship with now 13-year-old daughter Ireland. Keep in mind this is the same girl he infamously chewed out via voicemail, calling her a vile little pig amongst other terrible things a parent should never, ever say. It was a huge PR debacle, so you?d think he?d stay away from ever talking about Ireland again ? at least in anything other than absolutely glowing terms. But no.
?My daughter is 13 and I see now why, in these films, whenever they represent a Mayan culture, or any tribal culture, or a Hawaiian culture, they always throw a teenage girl into the volcano as a sacrifice,? he joked.
?I kind of understand why. They [teenage girls] are very opinionated.?

I?m starting to think Baldwin might want to completely stay away from mentioning other cultures, especially in relation to his jokes. The jokes themselves aren?t going over well, and associating them with other cultures simply seems to be widening the group of people he?s insulting. Instead of offending just mail-order brides, he offended Filipinos and Russians. Instead of offending just his daughter, he also offended Mayans, Hawaiians, and the Chinese. While I love the living daylights out of the guy ? simply for how great he is on ?30 Rock? ? I really think Alec Baldwin should stick to scripted jokes. He?s smart and worldly, which had great comedic potential, but he lacks that self-censoring feature that lets most of us know when we?re about to cross the line.

Alec Baldwin has a new love interest, according to Us Weekly. He?s dating Johanna Cox, who was the winner of the CW network?s Stylista ? a reality show where contestants competed to become assistant editors at Elle.
On April 1, Alec Baldwin, 51, left the NYC Gen Art Film Festival premiere of his flick “Lymelife” with Johanna Cox, 29, who, as the December 2008 winner of the CW’s “Stylista,” nabbed her current fashion editor gig at Elle.
“They acted like a couple,” said an onlooker. “They were holding hands.”

Johanna has an interesting background for a fashion editor. She graduated from Georgetown and worked as a military analyst in China and Washington D.C. She?s definitely not some vapid fashionista, to say the least. They sounds like an interesting mix. From most reports, Baldwin can be pretty intense. I love the guy, but I?ve read some interviews with him that made me want to reach through the page and slap him for being so moody and self-absorbed at times. That said, he?s still one of my absolute favorite actors because he?s so phenomenal on 30 Rock.
Baldwin is one of those guys that often goes looking for feuds, and he always find them. Recently he slammed the Huffington Post ? and websites in general ? for their journalism, which he says is merely commentary.
Apparently no one bothered to tell Alec Baldwin that the Huffington Post is now styling itself “the internet newspaper.” The 30 Rock actor, who was one of the first celebrities to accept Arianna Huffington’s invitation to blog for her, says he thinks websites like Huffpo occupy a different and less worthy level of the media ecosystem than The New York Times and the Washington Post:
?Newspapers are about journalism. The internet, and sites like this, are about commentary. People sign on and give their opinion. But that is not journalism. That is commentary, internet style, whereby most people are not trained as journalists and the comments of many posters here are anonymous. You can piss on anyone you want, say anything you want, and so long as it is within the boundaries of HuffPo politesse, you are in.?
Oh, and Baldwin also takes a swipe at the literacy of Huffpo’s readers, many of whom were upset when he criticized MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. “The reading comprehension here can be rather surprising at times,” he writes.

Technically he?s right, though it seems poor form to slam the website he?s often written for in the past. It reminds me of a quote from his character on 30 Rock, when he said, ?Thanks for telling me what I already know. You should write for the Huffington Post.? Of course his character is an unabashed conservative, so his snide comment makes sense. Baldwin is a staunch liberal. Writing for the website and then turning around and snapping at them is a little tacky.

Liam Neeson has decided to take on Alec Baldwin. And that is easily the scariest idea I can possibly imagine. Neeson strikes me as someone who is generally thoughtful and calm, and probably still rational and un-scary even is his more fiery moments. Alec Baldwin ? whom I love as an actor ? can be loud and insulting and sort of frightening when he gets all worked up about something. And in this case, the something both men are passionate about is horses.
Baldwin has been campaigning with PETA to rid Central Park of the horse drawn carriage. Neeson wants to keep them, and the two men may very well go head-to-head in front of New York?s legislation hearing on the matter.
LIAM Neeson might be going head to head with Alec Baldwin over Manhattan’s horse carriage industry. The Irish-born actor wrote a letter to the City Council in response to the proposed bill to ban the buggy business, according to the Irish Echo.
“As a horse lover and rider, I am deeply disturbed by the unnecessary and misguided political and extreme rhetoric against the horse-drawn carriage industry,” the letter stated. “As a proud New York resident, I have personally enjoyed the beauty of Central Park on a daily basis for many years, and these horses are an undeniable integral part of that experience.”
Neeson may have to face off with the “30 Rock” star at the legislation hearing on Jan. 30. Baldwin, who believes the horses are suffering, once compared the “tradition” of horse drawn carriages to the “tradition” of drug dealers and public intoxication. The vegetarian has been an avid protester against the use of the four-legged creatures.

This is one of those issues where I really do understand both sides. It?s hard to know exactly how well ? or how poorly ? the carriage horses are treated. PETA can be very extreme, to the point that many have accused them of drastically exaggerating and misrepresenting their claims. And there are few things I find as charming as the clip clopping of hooves through the park.
Really what it should come down to is an independent investigation into the horses? living conditions by the city, not what two actors have to say about the issue. Though I do relish the thought of the possibly obscenity-laced tirade Alec Baldwin may go into, which would probably do more harm than good.

Alec Baldwin used to be a notorious drinker back in the day. In an essay in a new book about addiction called “Moments of Clarity,” by actor Christopher Kennedy Lawford, Baldwin admits that when he was starring on Knots Landing in 1984 and 1985, he was out of control. He spent most of his time drinking, drugging, and playing some video game called Galaga in an arcade warehouse. He?d even drink while he drove ? and it took him a while to realize his behavior wasn?t normal and other people weren?t doing the same thing.
Alec Baldwin was on the Santa Monica Freeway with a plastic quart cup filled with chardonnay and ice between his legs. “I’m driving down the road, I’m having a drink,” Baldwin recalled of that day in 1983. “It’s 4 o’clock; I’m supposed to have a drink. But one day I went, ‘I don’t see anybody else in their car with a plastic take out container filled with ice and wine. They’re drinking coffee, they’re drinking Diet Coke. They’re not drinking wine.’ ”
Baldwin writes of his booze-soaked, drug- addled 20s, and the various self-revelations that finally led him to clean up. The “30 Rock” star describes the worst times of his addiction as the ” ‘Sixth Sense’ phase” - “when you’re dead but you don’t know it.”
He’d find himself in places where “sex, drugs, booze” flowed freely. “The room was full of people getting high and drinking and talking about all this bulls- - -. All those 3 a.m. conversations where everybody’s talking, urgently talking about something that doesn’t really matter.? Baldwin would end the night at an arcade warehouse playing “Galaga.”
“I would play video games from, like, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and I would wind down. Then I’d go home and go to bed,” Baldwin writes. “This was the only way I could go ‘beta’ and go into that state I needed to be, where I could calm down and take my mind off everything. I didn’t want to see anybody, talk to anybody, deal with anybody.”

Baldwin?s ?moment of clarity? wasn?t as dramatic as you might think someone like him would need. It came when he saw the look on the face of the guy who ran the arcade. Apparently it was deep pity ? as Baldwin put it, “‘Wow, I’m glad I’m not you.’” A little over a month before his 27th birthday, Baldwin joined AA. And he quotes a man who told him, “‘You never have to feel this way again if you don’t want to.’” The stories he tells are vivid and sad, and it?s clear Baldwin really was living like the walking dead during that time.
He?s obviously come a long way since then, and although he’s not a man without his demons, Baldwin seems to be reflective and willing to admit where he?s gone wrong.
