The Guardian has an article this week called ?Tortured by an earworm? How to get it out of your head.? Naturally, I looked at the title alone and thought this was a self-help piece aimed at RFK, Jr., but no! Instead it?s about what elements contribute to a song being particularly catchy, and how you can get rid of them when they?re stuck on repeat in your head. The impetus seems to have been the author having a hard time shaking ?Defying Gravity? and other Wicked tunes from her noggin?. In which case, this article is very well-timed to hand us the tools to get through snippets of ?DG? being played every time Wicked is announced as a nominee and/or winner when award season kicks into overdrive in January. But I?m jumping ahead. First, listen to the experts:
Earworm 101: Studies estimate that more than 90% of people experience such an ?earworm? at least once a week ? ?so it?s a really common, everyday experience,? says Kelly Jakubowski, an associate professor of music psychology at Durham University. The song snippet is typically about 20 seconds long, and plays on stubborn repeat in your head. Not everyone is equally susceptible. ?Mostly, it has to do with music exposure,? says Jakubowski. If you listen to music often, you?re more likely to find some of it gets ?stuck?.
?Mutually reinforcing qualities: Wicked, for example, might be particularly fiendish, pairing evocative lyrics with memorable melodies ? not to mention being inescapable at present. Jakubowski points to research by Callula Killingly, of Queensland University of Technology in Australia, which suggested a ?mutually reinforcing? relationship between the catchiness of a particular song and people?s exposure to it. ?Perhaps unsurprisingly, if people feel the urge to sing along to a piece of music when they?re hearing it, they tend to more often get it stuck in their heads later on,? says Jakubowsi.
Songs of note: Songs with faster tempos and ?memorable but distinctive? melodies were more likely to be ?musically sticky?, she adds. In a 2016 paper, Jakubowski singled out the opening riff of Deep Purple?s Smoke on the Water, the chorus of Lady Gaga?s Bad Romance and (fittingly) Kylie Minogue?s Can?t Get You Out of My Head as having the potent mix of generic and unexpected. Defying Gravity is riddled with interval jumps, including perfect fourths (as in Here Comes the Bride) and fifths (Star Wars) ? greater than you might expect of a standard pop song ? that catch our attention and get stuck in our heads.
Some ways out: First, listen to a different song ? or even just think of it. ?It?s nearly impossible to have two songs in your head at once: you just don?t have the cognitive resources to do that,? says Jakubowski. In countering a deeply lodged earworm, it helps to reach for a song that is familiar but not too engaging. One survey led by Jakubowski found that God Save the King was the most effective. ?Most people said that that song is so boring you can think of it easily, but it doesn?t get stuck itself.?
Chewing gum helps?? According to 2015 research from the University of Reading, study participants who chewed gum after being played catchy pop songs reported thinking of and ?hearing? the song less often than those who didn?t. The lead author of the study suggested this simple strategy might be effective in countering other disruptive thoughts, by disrupting working memory. ?Essentially, when you?re singing something in your head, you?re sub-vocalising it ? The same muscles that you?d need to actually speak, you need those [available] to mentally ?speak,? says Jakubowski. ? But, Jakubowski adds, it?s important to chew vigorously enough to prevent you from ?talking? ? and, crucially, not in time with the music. ?If you?re chewing along with the beat, it could have the opposite effect.?
[From The Guardian]
You know what I can?t get out of my head now? The name Callula Killingly! How is she a research scientist and not a crime author, or the femme fatale in a film noir?! Anyway, being completely honest, weren?t the research results enumerated here rather basic? A song is likely to get stuck in your head if it has ?memorable melodies? and you hear it a lot. So far so obvious. I would?ve been interested to hear more on the science of music, like when they were describing the fourths and fifths in ?Defying Gravity,? and how those technical elements, invisible to the lay listener, instigate responses in our synapses while we?re blithely humming along. And the anti-repeat suggestions were fairly self-evident too, no? (Save for the gum chewing. That came out of left field and made me wonder if Wrigley?s funded this research.) ?Listen to another song? is hilariously obvious, though. But don?t get me wrong, I?m here for anyone who waxes pointedly on ?God Save the King? being such a boring song that it?s nigh impossible to get stuck in your head. The hits keep coming for Charles this Christmas!

Kylie Minogue covers the current issue of Hello! Magazine. Inside is a spread featuring faraway photos of her on the beach on the Greek island of Sifnos with her fiance of four months, 28 year-old actor Joshua Sasse. The photos look like they’re on a honeymoon, but Hello! reports that, contrary to rumors that they’re married already, these two are going to get married in Italy sometime next month. Joshua has a two year-old son who lives in Italy, from his relationship with an Italian woman. The timeline of their relationship may be suspect and it’s thought that Joshua was attached when he first met Kylie, but he’s enough of an unknown commodity that outlets don’t seem to have picked up on it. Hello! has details of their summer days, which sound and look very relaxing, along with some nice quotes from Kylie sort-of addressing their nearly 20 year age difference. (I think she gave those to a different outlet but they’re new to me.)
Hello! can reveal that [Joshua and Kylie] are planning to tie the knot in Italy next month.
A source on the island told Hello!: ?Joshua has been telling his friends in Greece about their plans to marry in Italy.?
Joshua knows Italy well: his two year-old son, Sebastian, from his relationship with Italian sociality Francesa Cini, lives there. The couple, who never married, separated when Sebastian was a young boy but Joshua maintains a good relationship with him.
[Joshua and Kylie] have been staying in a luxury house in Poulati, near Artemonas – an area known for its architecture and natural beauty.
During the day the happy couple have ventured down to a nearby beach, often then lunching at a gourmet fish restaurant or having a drink at all-day beach bar Palmira on Paltys Gialos beach.
Evenings have been spent wandering the streets of Artemonas, eating in local tavernas or sampling delicious Italian fare?
Both have largely relocated to Greece over the summer, regularly flying out to attend events in London?
?Joshua is still in Sifnos, while Kylie is in London? she will no doubt be back soon? He is spending all day at the beach, swimming, reading, learning to speak Greek, enjoying good food and having fun with some local friends..?
Joshua is 20 years her junior, but Kylie has said: ?I think the general consensus is we kind of look right together. So even though on paper it might not look right, it just is right.
?He is an absolutely brilliant, brilliant guy. And even if I try and act cool and natural, it?s written all over my face that I am very happy.?
[From Hello! Magazine, print edition]
How awesome does that vacation sound? They’re lounging on the beach, staying in a luxury villa, reading, eating and drinking, with occasional breaks for work. Plus they clearly adore each other, judging by the photos. Kylie’s right they do look good together. (She didn’t say that exactly, but that’s how I took it.) Now I want Hello! to get the exclusive wedding photos. You know I will be buying that issue. Hello! also points out that Italy is a popular wedding destination for celebrities, with Kim K and Kanye, George Clooney and Amal and Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster marrying there. I just want to go there for the food, I don’t need romance just some delicious pasta and wine.

We haven’t talked about Kylie Minogue’s love life in some time. She’s never been married. She was engaged to Olivier Martinez back in 2007, they split up amid reports that he was cheating (which she denied and she also credited him for helping her through breast cancer treatment). Then she dated Andrs Velencoso from 2008 to 2013, he’s a hot Spanish model and is about ten years younger than she is. Kylie admitted that breakup hit her hard and said that “there’s still heartbreak and emotional sadness and all of the things that come with bad break-ups, even if you’re not married.”
Now Aussie Kylie, 47, is engaged for the second time. She met British actor Joshua Sasse, 28, during a guest stint she did on Sasse’s ABC musical, Galavant, in which he plays the lead. They’ve been together since last fall and did the very British thing of announcing their engagement in The Daily Telegraph. (Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter also broke their engagement news in The Telegraph.)
Wonderwall has some more background on this. They allegedly got engaged in January, and Kylie was rocking a giant engagement ring at the NME awards last week:
According to the U.K.’s The Sun, Joshua has been called Kylie his “fiance” and was doing so at the NME Awards.
“Kylie may have been keeping tight-lipped, but Josh isn’t as keen to keep it a secret,” a source said. “He was proudly calling her his fiance to several guests and even joked that being with her meant he wouldn’t have any trouble getting into parties.”
The Sun believes that Joshua proposed while on a Swiss skiing trip in January.
Kylie, in the past, has gushed about her man, once saying, “I have a love of my life which is just a beautiful thing. I am kind of on cloud nine most of the time because of Mr Joshua Sasse, my beau.”
Last year, she told You magazine that the 19-year age gap wasn’t a concern to her.
“I can’t actually put into words how happy I am,” she said. “We just completely fit together. He gets me, I get him.”
[From Wonderwall]
I’m younger than Kylie and it’s very hard for me to imagine dating a guy under 30. He’s not incredibly young though, and he seems established in his career. (Plus he’s so hot!) Maybe they just hit it off.
Here’s Kylie’s engagement ring. It looks like a precious stone (is that aquamarine?) surrounded by two lines of diamonds. I’ve never seen a ring like that before and it’s gorgeous. It’s a little big for my tastes but damn it’s pretty. I can’t say the same for that doily dress with those silver platform shoes.
Oh and Kylie Instagrammed this photo thanking fans.

While it seemed as though they were in it for the long run, Kylie Minogue and her beau Andres Velencoso have officially called it quits.
According to US Weekly, the Australian songstress and Spanish model ended their five year courtship.
A mutual friend of the couple explained to the publication that the pair didn't drift and that it was mainly more about jammed-pack schedules than anything else.
"It was more of a time thing - they didn't get much of it together," the source stated. "There was no fall out, they're still friends, just not lovers anymore."
When asked about Miss Minogue's feelings about the situation, the source simply said, "She's doing alright - she throws herself into her work during times like this and she's got so much work going on at the moment."

For being 45, Kylie Minogue still looks pretty good. Here she is leaving a taping ofWatch What Happens Live. I’ve seen some 30-year-olds who don’t even look this good. It’s like they’re not even trying anymore. Granted, it doesn’t help when I go up and shake them while shouting, “Why you so ugly?!”
