Many people grow more conservative as they get older. They start making more money, they pay more in taxes, they worry about the messages being sent to the youths. Perhaps they grow bitter and disillusioned and perhaps one day, they find themselves watching Fox News and agreeing with that kind of propaganda. I see that all the time. But can I just say? If anything, I?m getting more liberal/socialist/progressive with each year that passes. My views on all kinds of social issues, reproductive issues and women?s issues have all gotten MORE liberal. So it is with my views on abortion when I was in college, most pro-choice candidates went with ?legal, safe and rare? and I agreed with that. But as the restrictions on abortion access grow with each hellish year, I?m like 100% that person saying we need an abortion-providing Planned Parenthood on every corner. Every single woman needs access to abortion services, birth control services and free gynocological care at every fking level. That?s where I am now: safe, legal abortions on demand for anyone who wants them. Make ?em free. Make birth control free too.
I also appreciate that women are still telling their abortion stories publicly. Celebrity women have been increasingly vocal about reproductive rights, support for Planned Parenthood and their own personal abortion stories. On her podcast, Alyssa Milano is the latest she spoke about getting two abortions in 1993.
Alyssa Milano has candidly detailed how she had two abortions just months apart while in her twenties after her birth control failed. The actress, 46, revealed that when she fell pregnant twice in 1993 she decided it was the right choice to have the procedures, as she didnt feel ready to become a parent and her career was just taking off.
Speaking on her podcast Sorry not Sorry, she explained: In 1993, I had two abortions. I was in love for the first time, in the breathless way you can only be in love when you are young. It was huge ? It filled every part of living. It was a joyful and exciting and powerful time in my life.
Another part of her decision was due to the fact she was taking medicine Accutane, which can cause birth defects in pregnancies. She said: I still got pregnant [despite using birth control]. It was devastating. I was raised Catholic and was suddenly put in conflict with my faith. ? I had a career and a future and potential. And also, I suffered from sometimes crippling anxiety. I wasnt equipped to be a mother. I chose to have an abortion. I chose. It was my choice. And it was absolutely the right choice for me. It was not an easy choice. It was not something I wanted but it was something I needed ? like most health care is.
She said: A few months later I found out I was pregnant again. And once again I made the right decision to end the pregnancy. Alyssa, who didnt divulge who her partner was at the time, said she has no regrets and her life would have been very different if she hadnt of had the abortions. She said: I would not have my children ? my beautiful, perfect, loving, kind and inquisitive children who have a mother who was so very, very ready for them. I would not have my career. I would not have the ability or platform I use to fight against oppression with all my heart ? I would never have been free to be myself ? and thats what this fight is all about: freedom.
[From The Daily Mail]
Her story is her story and her choice is her choice. It sounds like she was sad about it and she had some mixed feelings and Catholic guilt, but she knew then that she was not ready for motherhood. And that?s fine there are all kinds of emotions for some women, and utter certainty for other women and that?s exactly why it?s every individual woman?s choice.

| Alyssa Milano: A #sexstrike targets 'straight, cis men [with] physical consequences' | Added 5 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Alyssa Milano got a lot of well-deserved flack over the weekend for calling for a sex strike in response to the anti-choice laws sweeping the US. So many people thoughtfully pointed out how this plays into the worst stereotypes about women merely tolerating sex, how it ignores the circumstances of women in coercive relationships, and how it stinks of LGBTQ erasure. Alyssa has written an oped defending her position. She opens with the dire circumstances women are facing due to these laws restricting our reproductive rights and healthcare options. Then she describes her idea for a sex strike and how she thinks it will effect change. Theres more at the source at CNN and heres the gist:
Calling for a sex strike as a way to protest restrictions on abortion has sparked a powerful response.
Sure, its been a mixed reaction, but it got the country talking about the GOPs undeniable war on women. And lets face it, with so much going on every day in the news, sometimes we need an extreme response to get national attention
All of these bills have the same, singular purpose: to make it up to the Supreme Court. The sponsor of Alabamas pending abortion bill, Representative Terri Collins, openly said that the bills goal was to spark litigation that would force the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Anti-choice legislators speak with alarming candor and their intentions are very clear. They want to take away all control pregnant people have over their own bodies
We must collectively reject these restrictions on our basic human rights and dignity in every way that we can. This flood of anti-abortion legislation is completely outrageous and an equally bold response is required. And, so, we call on all people whose rights are in danger to participate in a #SexStrike.
Laws restricting abortion rights and access are a targeted attempt to erase decades of hard-fought gains for womens autonomy. A #SexStrike is another way for people who have the potential to get pregnant to call attention to this systematic onslaught and assert the power to change our own destinies.
Lysistratic protest is a longstanding, effective and empowering method to fight for change. In the 1600s, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) women refused to engage in sex as a way to stop unregulated warfare, and their demands were met. In 2009, activists in Kenya organized a sex strike to force an end the deteriorating relationship between the President and Prime Minister. The strike lasted seven days, and ended when the leaders finally agreed to talks. In 2011, Colombia women used a sex strike to get a dangerous 35-mile road repaired.
When utilized as part of a broader strategy of coordinated action, sex strikes can raise awareness and achieve a wide range of political objectives. This is just one tool available in the fight for reproductive justice and abortion access we must also support the organizations and individuals working courageously on the front lines by supporting them.
A #SexStrike is a way to target straight, cisgender men so they may feel the physical consequences of our reproductive rights being systematically eliminated. This form of protest has the potential to raise the issue far beyond the usual groups engaged in debates about reproductive health. Its a way to ignite conversation and help everyone understand the gravity of the situation and the immediate need for swift action.
Our vision is a world where people can all thrive. We want everyone to live healthy lives and have control over their sexual and reproductive choices. Join us by not having sex until we achieve full bodily autonomy for all.
[From CNN]
Of course this got attention for the cause because its polarizing and tone deaf. So were supposed to stop having sex with our liberal boyfriends and husbands to get them to join the cause? How long should this last exactly? This makes so many bad presumptions about our relationships, our roles as women and about mens roles. The women who sleep with the a-holes who vote for and pass these laws are not going on a sex strike. It would have been nice to have read a sentence or two in Milanos essay acknowledging our LGBTQ sisters and brothers or at least admitting that this type of action plays into the most damaging tropes about women not enjoying sex and using it as a bargaining tool. Maybe she could have talked about the reality of rape and how so many women dont have the luxury of doing this. Instead she doubled down. Its for an incredibly important cause, but this says so much about Alyssas brand of activism and feminism, how it lacks inclusivity and how shes not open to change at all.
Also, she got help with this from another activist and yet she still didnt acknowledge the criticism.
Op-ed on the #SexStrike for your reading pleasure.

Alyssa Milano tries, she really does. She tries to be an activist and an ally. We need more celebrities like her who are willing to stick their necks out to do whats right. She showed up at the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, she sat there glaring and whispering spells and she usually does the right thing. She also champions for stricter gun legislation. Sometimes she gets it wrong though, like her latest move calling for a sex strike to protest the draconian anti-choice laws that are criminalizing abortion. In Georgia the governor just passed a law banning abortion after six weeks, before most women know theyre pregnant. It doesnt go into effect until 2020 and will hopefully be shot down in court. An even worse bill has been proposed in Alabama. Of course the end game for these horrible people is to get the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. So over the weekend Alyssa proposed a sex strike where women, who are the gatekeepers of sex apparently, will deny it to their CIS male partners in protest. This is of course an idea not originated by Alyssa which dates back to the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata.
Please stop feeding the narrative that women are providers and men are consumers of sex. Bribing men for equal rights with access to our bodies is not how feminism works.

| Alyssa Milano sues former business manager for bilking her for millions | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I don’t read the industry outlets as much as I should, so I missed this story on Variety until E! picked it up. Alyssa Milano is suing her former business manager, accountant Kenneth Hellie, for alleged mismanagement of funds. Her lawsuit claims that Hellie and his firm used her money to make risky investments she did not approve of in ventures in which he had a financial stake, that they failed to pay her bills and taxes, and that they ultimately left her and her husband with bad credit and millions in debt. Hellie’s explanation is that it’s like Johnny Depp’s financial problems, which means that Milano couldn’t stop spending I guess. Milano’s side says that’s not the case at all and that she and her family live within their means. What’s more is that Milano says she turned down another season of Mistresses (she had a newborn at home at the time) because Hellie assured her she had plenty of money.
Alyssa Milano has filed a $10 million lawsuit accusing her former business manager of severe misconduct that caused her to spiral into a financial disaster.
The suit accuses accountant Kenneth Hellie and his firm, Hellie, Hoffer & Co., of forging her signature on checks, failing to pay overdue bills and taxes, and inducing her to make bad investments in businesses in which he was also an investor, without disclosing the conflict.
Hellie?s actions, according to the suit, left Milano and her husband, talent agent David Bugliari, ?with millions of dollars in debt and their credit in ruins.?
The suit was filed Friday in L.A. Superior Court in Van Nuys. Reached by phone on Saturday, Hellie declined to discuss the specifics.
?I?d like to say something,? he said. ?Obviously a lot of it?s like the Johnny Depp situation. I can?t say anything just yet.?
?We anticipated this defense,? said Milano?s attorney, Ellyn Garofalo, a partner at Liner LLP. ?Nothing could be further from reality. Alyssa and David live a relatively modest lifestyle centered on their family. It is unfortunate that Mr. Hellie finds it appropriate to blame the clients who trusted him rather than take responsibility for his own negligence and misconduct.?
She also alleges that Hellie used Milano?s funds to prop up his own investments. On four occasions, she says, Hellie transferred money out of her account without obtaining her signature. Instead, she says he scotch-taped her signature onto the wire authorization. She alleges that without her authorization, Hellie invested $351,000 of her money into a parking lot venture that has yet to generate any income. She says Hellie did not disclose that he was also an investor in the property.
Throughout, Milano says she continued to receive assurances that her finances were healthy. In 2014, she turned down appearing in the third season of the ABC show ?Mistresses.? The season would have paid her $1.3 million, and she says she may have negotiated an even more lucrative deal for the fourth season. Had she known how dire her finances truly were, the suit states she ?would never have turned down? the job.
[From Variety]
According to the lawsuit Hellie also failed to pay her mortgage, her taxes and cut and pasted her signature on checks she didn’t approve. This sounds like such a nightmare. It’s like the Alanis Morissette case in that you trust someone with all your assets and they skim and steal until it’s too late to fix and you feel betrayed but worse than that, you’re broke and in debt and had no idea. It’s possible that Milano and her husband are living large, but if half of what this lawsuit alleges is true I’m team Milano. I guess I always am though. The thing that surprises me is that she this kind of money squirreled away. To me that suggests she was frugal, but again it’s easy to try and keep up with the Joneses and lose it all in Hollywood.

Alyssa Milano has a new interview with US Magazine, I think to promote her partnership with the NFL’s fashion line for women. She recently taught a spin class as a promotional event, which sounds fun sign me up! US asked her about her relationship with her husband of seven years, CAA agent David Bugliari. Alyssa said that her parents come to stay with them every weekend to help watch their two children, Milo, 5, and Elizabella, 2, so that they can have alone time. That’s really nice and they must be a close family. Alyssa also still works with Atkins, although she recently got some competition representing the brand when Kim Kardashian signed on. Here’s what Alyssa told US:
My parents come stay with us so we have help with the babies. They understand the importance of actually spending time with your spouse. It?s what?s kept their 50-year marriage. You have to be able to still connect on a human level and not just a parental level,? Milano, 43, said. ?I?ve watched a lot of my friends struggle with their marriage and I think it?s because they?ve lost that adult connection. You gotta make time for that.?
And it doesn?t have to involve a romantic dinner. ?David and I can honestly make a date out of going to Target to do back-to-school shopping,? Milano told Us. ?We love to be together and we have fun no matter what we do.?
Just as important: spending one-on-one time with each child. ?Elizabella has a mommy-and-me ballet class that we go to,? says the actress. ?With Milo, I?m the bench coach for his baseball team. He loves it. I was his bench coach last year, and I said, ?Do you want me to do this again?? and he said, ?Yeah, mom, you have to!??
[From US Magazine]
Considering that so many couples stress and fight over issues on how to raise their kids, this sounds wise. I also love to hear about families who live close to extendedrelativesy help each other out. My mom and dad help with my son quite a bit and it’s beneficial for all of us. (I hope! I watch their dog when they’re away but I know it’s not the same thing.) However I have an older friend on facebook who recently posted that she will absolutely not babysit her grandkids now that she’s living alone. If it’s your own grandkids, how is that babysitting? I’m not very close to her, she’s just an acquaintance, but I would be interested to know if she’s close to her adult children and how far away they live from her. I guess as long as everyone is on board with watching the grandkids every weekend and no one in the family feels like it’s a burden then it can work out for everyone, as Alyssa explains.

| Alyssa Milano: mom guilt is 'prewired in a woman's being back to caveman days' | Added 9 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
Alyssa Milano’s hit the news several times over the past few days. I can’t figure out what she’s promoting, as the Project Runway: All Stars season finale already aired. I think Alyssa simply enjoys talking about parenting issues. She’s a breastfeeding advocate and recently battled on Twitter with Heathrow airport when they confiscated her breast milk. Alyssa recently visited The Talk where she revealed that she actually loves her stretch marks from pregnancy. She says they’re not “imperfections” but “beauty marks” from having a baby. Alyssa says she has stretch marks “on my boobs, on my a**, on my belly,” and she’s proud of them. She’s a soccer mom too (to 3-year-old Milo, who’s just starting the sport), so she did a quickie parking lot interview with Yahoo! parenting:
On being a working mother: “It’s hard to juggle everything. Every day is a process and a balancing act, but I try to take everyday as it comes. My schedule is sporadic, which is good because it allows me some real quality time with my kids. When I have business to attend to, I?m always aware that I need to get home as soon as possible or I feel guilty.”
Why Alyssa believes moms feel guilty: “I have learned, through a lot of therapy, that a lot of guilt is pre-wired in a woman’s being. I think if you go back to the caveman days, we are wired to not want to be away from our young because they didn’t have caretakers then. They didn?t have nannies. We needed to keep our offspring safe, and I don?t think we’ve evolved out of that. We still have the biological urge to be with our kids, and to know that the guilt is coming from some place biological, it helps. You realize, ‘oh, this instinct makes total sense.’ I think the same goes for dads. I hear friends complain that their husbands work even more now than before they had kids, and it’s because they?re hard-wired to want to provide.”
[From Yahoo! Parenting]
I can appreciate Alyssa’s enthusiasm for the realm of parenting. She enjoys being a mother, and it shows. The wide-sweeping statements about the pre-wiring of maternal urges is a bit judgy. Alyssa says she received that knowledge from therapy, but there are so many schools of therapy, and not every therapist believes we’re still wired like cavepeople. Alyssa believes it’s the truth, which is fine for her. But not all women and men feel the same way about the issue.
Alyssa’s still more relatable than a lot of celebrity moms. Yesterday, she tweeted “This last 10-15 pounds of baby weight is a BITCH.”
