Lainey at LaineyGossip has been saying this whole time that Brett Ratner is the one we should be keeping our eyes on in the unfolding sexual harassment/abuse scandal rocking Hollywood. Harvey Weinstein was important, of course, but his power was already waning before the NY Times and New Yorker broke their stories. Brett Ratner was and is an incredibly powerful person still, and he has connections to a lot of the current power players operating in Hollywood today. Ratner?s RatPac-Dune helped produce Wonder Woman for Warner Bros, as well as the Batfleck movies and Justice League. Ratner and Warner Bros already ?severed ties? with each other two weeks ago. And now Gal Gadot is using whatever power she has to say that she will not take part in another Wonder Woman movie if Ratner is in any way involved:
?Wonder Woman? star Gal Gadot is continuing to battle accused Hollywood sexual harasser Brett Ratner by refusing to sign for a superhero sequel unless the movie-maker is completely killed from the franchise. A Hollywood source tells Page Six that Gadot ? who last month backed out of a dinner honoring Ratner, where she was due to present him with an award ? is taking a strong stance on sexual harassment in Hollywood and doesn?t want her hit ?Wonder Woman? franchise to benefit a man accused of sexual misconduct.
Ratner?s production company RatPac-Dune Entertainment helped produce ?Wonder Woman? as part of its co-financing deal with Warner Bros. The movie has grossed more than $400 million internationally, and Ratner?s company will take a healthy share of the profits. A Warner Bros. insider explained, ?Brett made a lot of money from the success of ?Wonder Woman,? thanks to his company having helped finance the first movie. Now Gadot is saying she won?t sign for the sequel unless Warner Bros. buys Brett out [of his financing deal] and gets rid of him.?
The source added of Israeli-born Gadot, ?She?s tough and stands by her principles. She also knows the best way to hit people like Brett Ratner is in the wallet. She also knows that Warner Bros. has to side with her on this issue as it develops. They can?t have a movie rooted in women?s empowerment being part-financed by a man accused of sexual misconduct against women.?
Earlier this month, Gadot posted on Instagram: ?Bullying and sexual harassment is unacceptable! I stand by all the courageous women confronting their fears and speaking out. Together we stand. We are all united in this time of change.?
Reps for Gadot and Ratner did not comment. A rep for Warner Bros said only, ?False.?

It honestly sounded like Warner Bros and Ratner were already working out their divorce, and Ratner was probably unlikely to have anything to do with the Wonder Woman franchise from here on out, but good on Gadot for insisting on it and throwing her weight around. They honestly couldn?t do a WW sequel without her – like, what are they going to do, recast the role after the enormous success of the first film? Of course not. I kind of wonder if Gadot has a personal story about Ratner too.

Gal Gadot is having a peak summer. Her film, Wonder Woman, is breaking records, she’s become a symbol of both inspiration and power to a new generation of children, she has a new three-month-old daughter, Maya, and she gets to be friends with Chris Pine. If that wasn?t enough, her partner of 10 years is broadcasting to the world just how amazing she is. Gal is married to Dutch real estate developer Jaron Versano. | ?Wonder Woman' made history with a $100.5 million box office opening weekend | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

A month ago, box office analysts were being cautiously optimistic about Wonder Woman?s box office. They were saying WW would be a hit, but they thought maybe the North American box office opening would be about $65-70 million. When the review embargo was lifted and Rotten Tomatoes? fresh rating came in, all of a sudden Warner Bros realized that they actually had made a good movie that people actually wanted to see. So the analysis was that WW would make about $90 million. Well, good news. Wonder Woman broke the $100 million mark domestically, and she?s raking it in worldwide too.
In a defining moment for Hollywood’s gender problem, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman grossed a winning $100.5 million in its domestic box office debut, the biggest opening of all time for a female director. Hollywood studios are notoriously loath to hire female directors, not to mention for a big-budget tentpole featuring a marquee superhero. Wonder Woman’s performance could put even more pressure on film companies to make women filmmakers more job offers.
The $150 milllion Warner Bros. movie, starring Gal Gadot, also launches the first film franchise featuring a female superhero after both Catwoman and Elecktra flopped in the mid-2000?s. Wonder Woman skewed female (52 percent), almost unheard for a superhero tentpole, which usually draws an audience that is 60 percent male. Wonder Woman becomes the 16th superhero film to cross $100 million in its domestic box-office launch, a list that is topped by the likes of Marvel’s The Avengers ($207 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), Captain America: Civil War ($179.1 million), Iron Man 3 ($174 million) and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).

This is what many of us have been saying all along: there?s a real hunger for female-led action/fantasy/comic-book adaptations. There?s a real hunger for films that appeal to young girls AND their moms? around the whole world. And there?s a real hunger for studios – COUGH MARVEL COUGH – to step away from their sausage-party vibes. There is absolutely no reason why Marvel couldn?t have carved out some space for a stand-alone Black Widow movie. This proves that there would have been an audience for that story. Then again, I?m really glad that it was Wonder Woman who broke through – she?s way more iconic than Black Widow.
As for the talk of a sequel – of course there will be a sequel. Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are already under contract for at least one sequel, although WB hasn?t technically greenlighted it yet (but they will). Jenkins and Gadot recently said that the sequel would likely be set in modern times, and that they would skip out on doing another historical setting. Like, Wonder Woman isn?t going to solve the Cuban Missile Crisis. Or hang out with Don Draper.

Time Magazine has an excellent article about one of the most anticipated films of 2017, Wonder Woman ? you can read the full piece here. It works as a primer on the history of WW in the comics, as well as a primer on Wonder Woman?s history of controversy. WW always got sh-t for being pro-feminism, for being a superheroine for little girls, for looking like a sexy pin-up, and for daring to be glamorous AND strong. The most recent controversy for Wonder Woman saw her getting fired from her United Nations special ambassador position because she was deemed too sexy to stand up for exploited girls and women. In this Time piece, Gal Gadot speaks directly about the UN debacle and more. Some highlights:
Gadot on the UN firing Wonder Woman: ?There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you?re protesting, seriously? When people argue that Wonder Woman should ?cover up,? I don?t quite get it. They say, ?If she?s smart and strong, she can?t also be sexy.? That?s not fair. Why can?t she be all of the above??
Filming with a bunch of ladies in Italy: ?It was like a kibbutz, all of us living in little bungalows, beautiful and green with no cars. We had all these women in armor fighting on the beach, and meanwhile all the men?husbands and boyfriends?are walking around with strollers and taking care of the kids.?
Gadot didn?t want Wonder Woman to be bossy: ?We knew it was tricky. We wanted to find the balance between portraying her as confident and strong and feminine and warm. I didn?t want her to be a ball buster. I didn?t want her to be bossy. You can be powerful and also loving.?
Even though she served in the Israeli military, she?s a pacifist: ?I know it sounds cheesy, but I wish we didn?t have to have an army at all.?
Wonder Woman and feminism: ?I think people take it the wrong way when I say I?m a feminist. Feminism is not about burning bras and hating men. It?s about gender equality. Whoever is not a feminist is a chauvinist? We need to educate boys, show boys strong women in powerful positions. It?s all about expanding the possibilities of what women can be. I know I couldn?t do this without my husband.?
The body criticism she received: ?Did you see the feedback I got from the fans after they cast me for this role? It was all about my breasts and bottom literally being too small.?
[From Time Magazine]
I agree with her about Wonder Woman being strong, powerful, smart AND sexy, and that it?s absolutely ridiculous for WW to be fired from the UN just because she looks like a pin-up. Here?s what bugs me about what Gal says though: ?I didn?t want her to be a ball buster. I didn?t want her to be bossy.? This is a trap. This is the trap that Hollywood falls into time after time. Only women are called ?bossy.? Only women are called ?ballbusters.? Men who are strong and take-charge just get called superheroes and bosses. Only women and only female characters have to pass some kind of unwritten likeability/warmth/femininity test. What if Wonder Woman was ?bossy?? What if she didn?t give a sh-t about busting everyone?s balls? Why would that be a problem?
