Busy Philipps spoke at her alma mater, Loyola Marymount University, last Friday at their Alliance of Women Philanthropists (AWP) Speaker Series. Even with early success with her role on Freaks and Geeks, Busy said things weren?t easy. Hollywood execs told her to lose weight, which she thought would change her identity. Instead of acquiescing, she stood up for herself and carved her own niche. The overall theme of the AWP event was disruption, something Busy thinks she was born to do.
Philipps began working as an actor in the late 90s, during her sophomore year at LMU. She auditioned for over 90 television pilots, crying late at night to her then-boyfriend Colin Hanks (who also attended LMU) that she ?need[ed] to be an actress.?
She said, ?I started working when I was young ? I was an actor-for-hire.? Her first job was on the beloved sitcom ?Freaks and Geeks.?
Her hardship as a woman in Hollywood began after ?Freaks, Philipps recalled.
?I faced a lot of pressure about my own body as a young woman. I was told to change things that would?ve made me less me,? she said. Philipps said she would often get calls from her agents telling her to lose weight, sometimes bluntly and sometimes in coded messages about wanting her to feel her best.
Through all of this, Philipps said her ideals never faltered. ?I thought I was destined to rule the world,? she said. ?I really believe my mission in life is to dismantle the patriarchy.?
During a period where she struggled to find work due to her reluctance to travel in order to take care of her child, she discovered a new area where she could dismantle the patriarchy. ?There was a deficit in the late-night space for women,? she said.
She walked through the doors of Tina Fey?s production company, where she had done work in the past, and demanded a late night show according to Philipps. She told a story about ?bro-y? men at the company passively telling her that they would see what they could do, only for her to firmly restate that she would have a show.
?When I created my own show, I worked to make sure there was diversity,? she said. ?Creatively, I believe we are 99 percent female. This was important to me ? these decisions were made strategically.?
?Part of what motivates me is that I want to disrupt. I am doing things like talking about women?s health in casual ways,? she said. ?I?m trying to normalize being a woman.? On her show, Phillips discusses her period, abortion and other women?s health topics. ?Being a woman is political,? she said.

I always felt I was doing my part to destroy the patriarchy by living on my terms. Once I had kids, I realized I needed to become a more active voice. (I know it should not have taken children for me to realize this, but now I?m making up for lost time.) Busy Philipps spent her Thanksgiving break on a Disney Cruise that ended up at Disney World. She posted pics to her Instagram about the wonderful time they were having (jealous much?) but unfortunately, things turned sour after Busy spotted Sarah Huckabee Sanders strolling through the park. So Busy took the gloves off and really let Sanders have it? with a glare and furrowed brow, both of which she posted to her Instagram Stories.
For Busy Tonight host Busy Philipps, 39, a normal vacation to Disney World had an interesting plot twist when she ran into White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
Describing herself as ?truly shook,? Philipps announced on her Instagram Stories that she spotted Sanders after exiting the Rock ?n? Roller Coaster, an enclosed thrill ride located in Disney?s Hollywood Studios.
?Guys we just went on the rock and roll roller coaster,? said Philipps, wearing bright red lipstick and oversized blue sunglasses. ?Scarier than that, when i got off, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was there. And she had a security guard so we didn?t see anything, but i did do this.? Philipps gave a dirty look to the camera, furrowing her brow and scrunching her forehead.
?Honestly I didn?t want to say anything because I didn?t want to get kicked out of the park, and we were not with our kids because they were waiting with someone else. I gave her such a mean look,? said Philipps, with a drop of humor. ?She saw it. She saw it.?

Sanders walking around Disney World brings to mind the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Since the only thing that gives Sanders joy is whispering hexes on qualified journalists, I?m not sure what she hoped to take away from visiting a Disney park, save for possibly Mickey, whom she intended to feed to her cat. But according to Busy?s follow-up tweet, Sanders was enjoying the day with her family, something Busy didn?t think was fair considering Sanders is part of an administration that is taking other people?s children from their families.
Just gave Sarah Huckabee Sanders a very dirty look at DisneyWorld. Just doesn?t seem fair that she gets to enjoy it with her family while families are suffering because of the lies she spreads.

When Busy Philipps first announced she?d written a memoir, I was skeptical that should would have much to say in it. I was wrong. Unfortunately, much of what has come out of This Will Only Hurt a Little so far has been gutting to read. Busy shared the story of her sexual assault at the age of 14 and being knocked to the ground by James Franco when she was 20. In the latest except, Busy discusses getting an abortion when she was 15 despite being harangued by her boyfriend?s mother not to. But Busy also said she found some peace when she asked Pope John Paul II for forgiveness and he gave it to her.
In ?This Will Only Hurt a Little,? Philipps writes that after becoming pregnant with her first serious boyfriend?s child, his mother got involved, telling her, ?You?re being selfish .?.?. You?re going to murder a baby.?
Philipps says her parents found out from her diary and her mother stood up for her.
?My mother is who you want in your corner,? she writes, saying she ?just supported and loved me.?
After the procedure, Philipps recalls, she went on a trip with her school to the Vatican, when Pope John Paul II spoke to her in Italian and made the sign of the cross.
?I never told this story publicly .?.?. I haven?t even told people I?m very close with,? she says. ?It doesn?t work for me without getting the absolution I needed. And from the only person in the world who could give it to me: the Pope in Rome.?
The date, she writes, ?was my due date.?

This is such a deeply personal experience. I assume from this story that Busy is Catholic and that is why she felt the Pope was the only person who could absolve her. If that?s the case, I?m happy she had that resolution as it must have brought her some peace. I don?t think an abortion is an easy decision at any age, but I can?t imagine what it must have been like trying to decide what to do at 15 with your boyfriend?s mother accusing you of murder. Thank goodness her mother was in her corner as was, I guess, the Pope. That fact that she was granted absolution on her due date pings my heart the most.
I am a fan of Busy?s but like many others, I got a bit oversaturated with her last year. Learning how much she?s survived and at such a young age, though, I think her ?live out loud? personality may be a coping mechanism. I?m happy she is finally able to talk about these things that she?s kept bottled up. This Will Only Hurt a Little will be released next Tuesday and her talk show, Busy Tonight, will air on E! on the 28th.

Busy Philipps was on Ellen yesterday to promote her new memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little, which comes out in about two weeks. Last Friday, the day after Dr. Fords powerful testimony, Busy, 39, revealed that she was raped at the age of 14. She had only told this to her family and close friends a few of months ago. Ellen asked Busy if she wanted to talk about that and she did, explaining that she was so moved by Dr. Fords bravery that she decided to tell her story. Ellen then revealed that something happened to her at 15. The interview was tough to watch as I could relate to both of them. You can see the video below and heres some of what they said:
On why she revealed her rape
Busy: I was so moved by [Dr. Ford?s] bravery. It wasn?t something that I felt like I was ever going to blast out on social media. But when I saw her standing there, speaking her truth after 30 years, I was like, ?It?s been 25 for me. I can do this. We can all do this.? Politically whatever you believe I feel like it?s a real moment of reckoning for women, that we have sort of collectively carried this burden for so long. And it?s time to share it.
Ellen: to be 14 years old, to be that girl and for that to happen to her, its horrible
Busy: Yeah and its sadly the most unoriginal horror isnt it?
Ellen opened up too
Ellen: I was 15 and I had something happen to me. When I watched Dr. Ford, anyone whos had something happen to them, you just get so angry when someone doesnt believe you or say why did you wait so long? Its because were girls and were taught not to say anything and to go along with it. So you at 14, me at 15.
Busy: Ive struggled with it for so long. Even when I wrote the chapter in my head, I had in my head an escape plan if I panic and dont want to put it out into the world. I just feel like were at that moment in time.
Busy on not telling her mom
I told my parents and my older sister five months ago, when the book was finished and I had come to peace that I was going to speak my truth. I said, ?But Mom, I just want you to know? ? because she felt like she had failed me and didn?t protect me. And I understand that, being a mother, but I was like, ?Mom, you are really the hero of my book.? She really is. She was there for me. Without her, I wouldn?t be sitting here with you.

Busy really moved me here as did Ellen. None of us are obligated to reveal our pain or to open our wounds to prove our bravery. We are all courageous and we all stand together against abuse. We alone can tell our stories when and if we are ready. Dr. Fords testimony came at a great personal cost to her. She helped start a conversation will hopefully make changes for the next generation. As Ellen said, Dont ever be ashamed and think that its your problem and your fault. It is never your fault, youre a child.

Busy Philipps and Michelle Williams have been best friends since their Dawson’s Creek days. Busy often attends events with Michelle to events and they are often photographed together. I’m sure many people in Hollywood have strong friendships but we don’t generally see them, especially after they start families. It’s great that these two are so close. Good friends are a treasure. And it’s nice to know someone always has your back:

Busy Phillips (Kim Kelly 4-eva) rocked a strapless, beaded black gown by Jeffrey Dodd at the In Style post-Golden Globes party on Sunday night. She accessorized with a Adriana Papell clutch. Although Busy’s BFF Michelle Williams brought activist Rosa Alicia Clemente as her date, the two managed to get together for an awards night selfie, which Busy captioned, “Of course we want you to come sit with us.” I would love to sit with these two, they seem like they’d be so much fun.

The story on People about Busy Philipp’s trip to the ER has a title that makes it sound like Busy partied too much with her BFF Michelle Williams and had some kind of accident. It read “Busy Philipps Lands in Hospital After Celebrating Michelle Williams?s Birthday in Boston.” I mean Busy gets into some precarious situations when she’s drunk (we know because she posts it on social media) so it sounds likely. In reality Busy flipped her ovary over, it’s called ovarian torsion and it was so painful it sent her to the hospital. It sounds absolutely awful. I knew you could have ovarian cysts rupture but I had no idea your entire ovary could twist and have the blood supply cut. I’m sure there are all sorts of other injuries and ailments I’m not aware of and will now need to resist researching. The good news is that the hospital figured out the cause and that Busy was treated and released. She posted this to Instagram about her ordeal.
Last night ended super weird. But if you listen to my podcast, you know our advice is always, don't be a hero, go to the doctor. Anyway, I had a crazy excruciating pain in my lower right side and after a long time at Mass Gen, it was determined my ovary had flipped over- it's called torsion. Mine flipped back by itself and I'm ok but sometimes if it doesn't you have to get surgery or you can lose your ovary(which actually happened to a really good friend of mine) Anyway, my point of posting this was I felt like an idiot for going to the hospital but ultimately, going was the right move! It always is! Even if they say you're fine and send you on your way! And a huge thank you to the amazing doctors and nurses who took care of me! ??????
