In June Kesha and Dr. Luke announced that they had reached a settlement after nearly 10 years of suits and countersuits. Kesha originally sued Dr. Luke to get out of her contract with him and his Kemosabe Records, on the grounds that he had raped, drugged, and verbally and physically abused her. Dr. Luke then countersued Kesha for defamation, and refused to let her out of her contract. The timing of the settlement news was a bit curious as it came just after courts had started ruling in Kesha?s favor. In their carefully worded joint statement, Kesha said she was ?looking forward to closing the door on this chapter of my life and beginning a new one.? For his part, Dr. Luke?s comments made it clear he was still a passive aggressive POS. As this year draws to a close, it seems Kesha really is wrapping up this chapter of her life: she is finally contractually free from Dr. Luke and Kemosabe Records, and she?s also parting ways with her management of 16 years.
Kesha has parted ways with both her label and management, a source close to the situation tells Variety. The news comes six months after the singer settled multiple lawsuits with her former producer and label owner Dr. Luke, which stretched over nearly 10 years but were settled out of court in June.
The singer?s deal with Luke?s label, Kemosabe, which is distributed by RCA Records, officially ended last week, the source says, seven months after the release of her last contractual album with the label, ?Gag Order,? which was released in May. In a statement to Variety, a rep for her longtime manager confirmed on Tuesday that the singer has also parted ways with the company: ?Jack Rovner confirms, after 16 years, Kesha and Vector Management have agreed amicably to part ways, with much love and respect.?
Kesha followed with a statement of her own shortly after: ?My manager has been an unwavering supporter of helping me get through the lengthy legal battle I have been embroiled in for almost a decade. We have achieved many great successes and have shared a magnificent part of my life with me. I am so grateful to them and always will be. In need of a fresh start in my life, we have parted ways but I will remain forever grateful for the run we had.? The singer is said to be in discussions with potential new managers; reps for Kemosabe and RCA either declined or did not immediately respond to Variety?s requests for comment.

This has been a long, harrowing fight for Kesha. It took a lot of strength for her to keep going with the lawsuits and to continue growing as a person and an artist ? all while knowing her music was still making money for Dr. Luke. While the settlement in June was a big victory (although I?m sure we?ll never know what was paid out), being rid of the contract was always the end goal. It may not have happened as early as she wanted, but there?s still something satisfying about this coming together at the end of the year. She has a purely fresh start for 2024. And she knows it too, judging by the fantastic Instagram post she put up this week: a tasteful pic of her from behind, naked and wading in water, with the caption ?Coming back home to me .? Welcome home, Kesha.

Being a woman in the public eye while the legal system says ?No, this person didn?t abuse you, and you really need to fulfill your contract with him,? must be completely soul-crushing. We?ve watched Kesha work to come back into her own, and it?s been in turns heartfelt and kooky. Well, all I can say is her work has paid off. On the heels of releasing her fifth studio album, Gag Order, Kesha sat down with Zane Lowe from Apple Music, and in their nearly-one-hour conversation Kesha laid bare how leaning in more to her psychedelic breaks was her way forward:
Anxiety can often feel like one?s brain is playing a trick on them, and Kesha?s opening up about feeling that to the utmost degree.
In a new interview with Apple Music?s Zane Lowe, the singer-songwriter revealed she once had such intense anxiety that she mistook it for a ?psychotic break,? noting that she?s since turned to ?spirituality? in order to heal.
?I went through this crazy psychedelic spiritual experience in the midst of the anxiety? it was pure anxiety,? said Kesha, 36. ?My brain felt like? I thought maybe it was the process of having a psychotic break or something. But then once I just started leaning into it, I was like, ?Well, it?s happening, so what am I going to do about it?? ?
She explained that a song from her new album Gag Order was inspired by the experience: ?I had this full psychedelic kind of trip sober, and that?s what ?Eat the Acid? is written about.?
Released last week, Gag Order finds the ?Tik Tok? performer in an especially introspective space, as she sings about mental health and past romantic relationships. Throughout the record, she also seems to allude to her ongoing legal battle with ex-collaborator Lukasz ?Dr. Luke? Gottwald.
?I have people that I trust implicitly so much in my life, so I?m very lucky for that. But I have a harder time in romantic relationships fully trusting,? explained Kesha. ?I?m going to be honest with you. And yeah, it?s something I work on. That?s why I?m constantly working on myself is because [] selfishly, I?d like to be happy.?
She then detailed another Gag Order track, an emotional ballad titled ?Happy,? that discusses her search for peace in its lyrics: ?It?s about just that I want to be happy, I want to let go. I want to be free. I want to trust the process, trust the universe, all of those things.?
?And I do feel like I cannot just remain in my childlike self. So there?s an element of having to grow up,? added the Grammy nominee. ?And I feel like this album completely documents the time where I was like, ?OK, I have to deal with some s? and I just need to walk through it, and it?s going to be really uncomfortable. And I feel like it?s really helped me grow into a woman, and you know, you hear it all on the album.?

?Selfishly, I?d like to be happy,? is one of the most emotionally honest things I?ve ever heard. And it?s not a bad thing to want! I highly recommend watching the full interview with Zane Lowe. For one thing, I have never seen her look so good. She?s clear-eyed and fresh-faced. I mean, she also seems like at any moment she could start crying, but she wears it as more of a strength than a weakness, and their conversation touches on how overwhelming it can be to take in the world when you?re a sensitive person. It can so easily feel like too much?that?s written all over her face. But she?s still showing up, and she?s investigating anything (spirituality, horoscopes, traditional therapy) that might make it easier. It sounds like making Gag Order (is that a freakin? brilliant title for her or what?) was cathartic.

Kesha has a makeup line called Kesha Rose, which Im just hearing about now. You can see the products here. Shes got a colorful eye makeup palette, lipstick and gloss and liquid eyeliner. It looks like the lipstick only comes in one shade, which is weird to me, but thats cool that she has a line out. The prices are mid-level and somewhat competitive with other celebrity lines. I consider them high end at $36 for an eyeshadow palette, but many of you have schooled me that this is mid-priced. To promote it, Kesha did an interview with Refinery 29 (thanks Socialite Life for featuring this) which they wrote as a first-person essay, all about how shes doing self care in lockdown. I liked how open she was about her mental health. Some of her self-care activities are common things we do, like face masks and baths, but I still enjoyed reading this. Heres some of what she said:
I am trying to think of the silver lining. When you are forced to stay home, how can you make it as positive as possible? I am very, very lucky I am healthy, and I just try to come back to gratitude ? even when I feel like Im going crazy. I am trying to stay motivated to create, but there are some days where making it through the day is accomplishment enough.
I am normally too exhausted after my day to do a full skin-care routine, but now a bubble bath with a Lush bath bomb and a collagen sheet mask is one of my favorite activities. I got this ice roller I love, as well as a micro-needling roller; I use that and then apply moisturizer on top.
I was at CVS Pharmacy recently getting essentials and I saw mens beard dye and I thought, Ill put it on my eyebrows. It makes them really dark and wild-looking. Its something that I discovered in quarantine, and its the first time Ive done it on myself.
There are also these butt masks called Bawdy that I have been using, too. It helps having someone put it on your butt, so thats another perk of being quarantined with my boyfriend. Its one of those things that, at the end of the night, brings me happiness.
Some days I just stay in sweatpants, and other days I wake up and think, I?m going to do my eyebrows and put on a little makeup and just feel really cute. I?ve realized that doing my makeup can be transformative for my mood. Its not about looking beautiful; its more about feeling confident to face the day.

My mom taught me the trick of using Just For Men beard dye on my eyebrows and she still does this. Once, once day before going on a first date, I left the beard dye on my eyebrows for too long and I looked like Groucho Marx! (Im blonde though and bought light brown. Kesha has dark hair now.) I called my colorist in a panic and he gave me this powder to take the dye out and told me he could just dye my eyebrows at the same time as my hair next time. Now that I dye my hair at home I put the hair dye on my eyebrows for the same amount of time. I know some of you are going to tell me I shouldnt do this, but its been working for me. Pulling out all my gray eyebrow hairs is not an option!
Ive never heard of butt masks! Sephora has the actual butt sheet masks she mentions, but couldnt you just put a detoxifying/anti-oil type mask on your butt too? I never cared enough about that area to consider this. Some people deal with butt acne though so I can see how its a thing.

Last year, Kesha suffered a series of legal setbacks while trying to escape from her contract with Sony under producer Dr. Luke. Kesha alleged that Dr. Luke mentally and physically abused her, drugged her and sexually assaulted her. Under the terms of her ongoing contract, Kesha was being made to continue working for Sony and her abuser, Dr. Luke. She’s continuing her court case in New York and has issued an appeal, although she has dropped a civil case in California against Dr. Luke. In new court papers, Kesha’s lawyer includes emails from Dr. Luke to Kesha’s manager in which Dr. Luke claims Kesha’s weight is a liability for her career, tries to complain about her breaking a juice fast, and is extremely petty about some lyric changes she suggests. Kesha has continued her career, but she’s had to make major changes to her music to avoid violating her contract with Sony.
A year after a Manhattan judge ruled that Kesha couldn?t walk away from her exclusive recording contract with Sony and Dr. Luke despite claims that he?d raped her and called her a ?fat f?king refrigerator,? she?s asking the jurist to reconsider.
Kesha wants to ?be free from her abuser and rebuild her physical, emotional, and mental health,? her attorney writes in court papers filed this week.
Dr. Luke has denied the claims.
But newly released emails between Dr. Luke and Kesha?s manager Monica Cornia give credence to the performer?s claims that the producer was heartless about her eating disorder.
?Nobody was calling anybody out,? Dr. Luke writes to Cornia at 2:11 a.m. on June 28, 2012, according to a copy of the email.
?We were having a discussion on how she can be more disciplined with her diet. there have been many times we have all witnessed her breaking her diet plan. this perticular [sic] time ? it happened to be diet coke and turkey while on an all juice fast,? the producer gripes.
Cornia asks him to be more supportive because she?s ?a human and not a machine,? then adds, ?if she were a machine that would be way cool and we could do whatever we want.?
Dr. Luke also reveals in an earlier message that ?A list songwriters and producers are reluctant to give Kesha their songs because of her weight.?
In a May 2012 email exchange between Cornia, Kesha and other managers, Cornia discusses a fight between the singer and her producer over lyrics for what would become her hot single ?Crazy Kids.?
In one email, Cornia says Dr. Luke wanted the phrase, ?You see us in the club sip sippin bub,? while Kesha preferred, ?You see us in the streets we da we da freaks,? because she doesn?t go to clubs.
?I don?t give a s?t what you want. If you were smart you would go in and sing it,? Dr. Luke allegedly told Kesha, according to Cornia.
Cornia adds that Kesha tried to settle the spat with Dr. Luke, but ?didn?t feel comfortable talking to him? in the studio.
?He refused to come downstairs (?she wears the pants in MY house??) so we left,? Cornia writes, again quoting Dr. Luke.

So Dr. Luke is so controlling that he’s complaining to Kesha’s manager that she dared eat a little turkey and drink some diet Coke while she was on a juice fast. He’s so controlling that he considers it emasculating to let her change one single line in a song. He’s so controlling that he claims that Kesha isn’t getting work because of her weight. (Which is doubtful, he’s likely using that as an excuse.) Keep in mind that this isn’t just sh-t talk in the studio (which would be bad enough) he’s actually writing these things to Kesha’s manager. Last year it came out that the judge assigned to Kesha’s case, who threw out Kesha’s suit against Sony, is married to a lawyer for Sony. I hope that this appeal is successful for her and/or that another judge is put on the case. She’s gone through so much.
Update: Dr. Luke’s team has responded to these emails, and they claim that they’re taken out of context, are misleading and that Kesha was the one concerned about her weight. This is exactly how I would expect an abuser to respond.
Kesha and her attorneys continue to mislead by refusing to disclose the larger record of evidence showing the bad faith of Kesha Sebert and her representatives which is greatly damaging to them. It also shows the tremendous support that Dr. Luke provided Kesha regarding artistic and personal issues, including Kesha?s own concerns over her weight.
Rather than agree to a thorough disclosure, Kesha and her representatives improperly publicized, without Court permission, three out-of-context emails which do not present the full picture regarding the events they concern. For example, these emails do not show that the lyrics of ?Crazy Kids? were, in fact, rewritten at Kesha?s request. Any claim by Kesha to the contrary is deceiving the public ? just like her other meritless claims of wrongdoing by Dr. Luke.
Dr. Luke looks forward to full vindication in Court.

oh my love, ??the Springwater?? this is the same bar I have been sneaking into since I was a kid, where I first saw my favorite band Partycannon ( Steeeeeeeephen was in it ), where I played my first show with my brother (we were called Dynamite Cop btw ) where I have had endless disgusting fun nights full of bad boys, and my favorite bathrooms on the planet ( SO gross ) – I also first saw someone smoking crack outside this venue when I was 17 ( scary, don't do drugs ) AND where I shot and DIRECTED my first video- the music video to my favorite song off of Warrior, Dirty Love ( a song I wrote and recorded with my favorite artist, the genius, Mr. Iggy Pop, the father of punk and all things awesome. thank you for being a haven for debauchery and housing some of my most special nights and favorite laugh out loud memories. ?????????????????????

In January of this year, Kesha checked into a rehab/mental health facility because she was abusing substances and she was in the throes of an eating disorder. It sounded like she was genuinely in a really bad place, and to her credit, she sought treatment of her own accord, because she realized she needed help (as opposed to those people who hit rock bottom by hurting other people). Kesha stayed undercover for a while, getting help, and she came out a few months later. She seemed a lot healthier and happier. In the midst of her treatment, though, many in Kesha?s team (including her mom) thought Kesha?s producer Dr. Luke was mainly to blame for her situation. Dr. Luke allegedly fat-shamed her, criticized her incessantly and triggered her eating disorder. Now Kesha has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke and OMG, the whole situation was really, really bad.
Kesha was sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused for 10 years by her producer, Dr. Luke, to the point where she nearly died. According to a new lawsuit — obtained by TMZ — Kesha claims Dr. Luke was abusive towards her almost from the get-go — when she signed on with him at 18 — and made repeated sexual advances toward her. She claims he would force her to use drugs and alcohol to remove her defenses.
In one instance, Kesha claims he forced her to snort something before getting on a plane ? and during the trip he forced himself on her while she was drugged. On another occasion, Kesha claims after forcing her to drink with him, Dr. Luke gave her what he called “sober pills.” Kesha claims she woke up the following afternoon, naked in Dr. Luke’s bed, sore, sick ? and with no memory of how she got there.
Kesha says the alleged abuse led to her eating disorder — a story TMZ broke earlier this year. She claims Dr. Luke said, among other things, “You are not that pretty, you are not that talented, you are just lucky to have me.” As we reported, she claims he called her “a fat f***ing refrigerator.”
Kesha also says there was physical abuse … once she says he attacked her at his Malibu house where he was “violently thrashing his arms at her.” She says she escaped and ran barefoot down PCH and hid in the mountains.
Kesha is asking a judge to let her out of her contract with Luke. Kesha’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, tells TMZ … “This lawsuit is a wholehearted effort by Kesha to regain control of her music career and her personal freedom after suffering for ten years as a victim of mental manipulation, emotional abuse and an instance of sexual assault at the hands of Dr. Luke.”
Geragos adds, “The facts presented in our lawsuit paint a picture of a man who is controlling and willing to commit horrible acts of abuse in an attempt to intimidate an impressionable, talented, young female artist into submission for his personal gain. Kesha is focused on moving her life and her career beyond this terrible time.”
We called Dr. Luke’s rep. So far, no word back.

HOLY CRAP. I don?t understand how ?triggering an eating disorder? got the headline when it sounds like Dr. Luke was a predator (allegedly) who emotionally and sexually abused Kesha. This is just so awful. Poor Kesha. And yes, obviously, she should be let out of her contract with him. The lawsuit is a civil/business action, but surely there?s enough in here for a criminal complaint as well? And if Dr. Luke is passing out roofies, maybe there?s a drug case in here too. This guy sounds like scum. Shortly after Kesha filed her suit, Dr. Luke countersued, claiming Kesha made the whole thing up:
Kesha is a liar who is making up stories just so she can get out of her legally binding contract with Dr. Luke … and she tried extorting him to boot … this according to a new lawsuit. Luke filed suit hours after Kesha filed her own lawsuit … accusing him of sexual and physical assault over a period of years.
But in Luke’s lawsuit … he says the pack of lies is being engineered by Kesha’s mother, Pebe and Kesha’s new management firm. Luke claims Kesha tried to extort him by threatening to spread lies about him to a blogger who started a “Free Kesha” website unless he released her from her recording contract. And Luke says in his lawsuit he’s had a copy of a draft of Kesha’s new abuse lawsuit for months, and she was threatening to file it if he didn’t release her. In other words, he’s alleging more extortion.
Luke’s lawyer, Christine Lepera, tells TMZ, Kesha’s lawsuit about abuse is part of “a campaign of publishing outrageous and untrue statements,” calling the allegations scurrilous. Lepera says Kesha and her mom have already admitted the statements are false.

Er… here’s what I don’t get: if Kesha is so difficult and such an extortionist, why not just let her out of her contract? Why fight to hang on to her? Plus, I don’t even consider this “extortion.” If Kesha’s claims are even partially true, she has every right to go public and to sue him. And if she waited to file the suit, what does that prove? Nothing, really. It’s also possible that the crux of both lawsuits are true: Kesha could be the victim of Dr. Luke’s abuse AND she could be trying to extort him.
