I feel like I know a celebrity whenever I hear them interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air. That’s how I feel about Katey Sagal, who told host David Bianculli in 2013 about growing up in LA with a dad who was a director for TV shows and later working as a backup singer for Bette Midler and Bob Dylan. Katey has a new memoir out today called Grace Notes: My Recollections. According to advance details, she had a drug and alcohol dependence she developed in her teens which she struggled with for fifteen years. She also reveals that she had an affair years ago with Gene Simmons, the news of which came out last month. She met him while she was working as a singing waitress as a restaurant, and it all sounds so cinematic. I guess she didn’t reveal much on Fresh Air at all and it sounds like she’s had a very eventful life.
Sagal blames growing up in Los Angeles for an attitude toward drugs that led to a 15-year addiction to diet pills, cocaine and alcohol. ?When I was 12, we lived on the same block as Judy Garland. Her daughter Lorna Luft and I became neighborhood buddies. Lorna?s mom had a lot of pills on her bedside table and slept past noon just like my mom. We hung tight. And, of course, I thought everyone?s mom took a lot of pills.?
Before becoming an actress, Sagal was a singing waitress. ?I could get your order wrong, spill blue cheese dressing on your lap, whisper what an a-hole you were, and then pick up my guitar or go to the piano and sing you an awesome rendition of ?Brown Eyed Girl.??
After being a backup singer for Bette Midler and Etta James, she was approached to audition for ?The Mary Tyler Moore Show.? Her reaction was, ?Are you kidding? I?m not even looking for a job as an actor. I?m a musician!? Sagal recalled. ?Apparently that approach is gold for me.?

How sad to see your mom and your friends’ moms be addicted to pills and basically absent from your life. At least she was able to beat her demons in her late 20s, if my math is correct, and achieve sobriety. Katey has been working steadily in film and on TV since Sons of Anarchy wrapped in 2014. She currently stars on a comedy on CBS called Superior Donuts. She also has a part in the Dirty Dancing TV remake, which is out this May. She plays Vivian Pressman, the older lady who tried to seduce the male staff. That’s a great part for her. She’s such a kickass actress I’m surprised she wasn’t interested in acting at first.

Katey Sagal of Sons of Anarchy got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. On hand to help her accept the award were her former Married… With Children co-stars, Christina Applegate, Ed O’Neill and David Faustino. I don’t have a lot of nostalgia for that show because it was so dirty I wasn’t supposed to watch it. I still did, of course, especially as I got older. Wiki says that it aired from 1987 to 1997, which was a whopping 11 seasons. I didn’t remember how long it ran, that’s crazy.
US Magazine has details of the introduction speeches that Katey’s Married co-stars gave on her behalf. You can see the video of that on the website for The Walk of Fame. Ed O’Neil comes in at around 11:30 and Christina Applegate begins at 12:40. She makes a self deprecating joke about how Katey is in better shape than she is and then she says that Katey was like a mom to her on set. David Faustino also called her his “second mamma” and “an inspiration.” Here’s more:
The Bundys are back together! Katey Sagal was awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and was celebrated by familiar faces — her Married With Children costars!
Seventeen years after the final episode of the sitcom aired, Sagal, 60, posed for a photo with former costars Christina Applegate, Ed O’Neill and David Faustino. O’Neill played her on-screen husband Al, while Applegate and Faustino played their kids Kelly and Bud.
In a video posted on the Walk of Fame website, Applegate joked, “I met Katey when I was 15-years-old, so it’s been about 10 years since we met?I’ll never forget the day that I met her. I walked into the rehearsal hall for Married with Children and she was sitting there wearing a white T-shirt and jeans and I’ve never seen anyone look that good in a white T-shirt and jeans in my entire life.”
“The fact that your body is better now than it was then makes me sick,” the Anchorman actress went on to joke. “Because I’m wearing a Fitbit trying to get rid of all my baby weight!”
Sagal, who was nominated for an Emmy four times for her portrayal of whiny housewife Peg Bundy, was also celebrated by current Sons of Anarchy costar and hunk Charlie Hunnam.

I had the pleasure of hearing Katey’s Fresh Air interview last year. She’s a very interesting, introspective lady and she’s had an amazing life so far. Her dad was a writer and director for television and she worked as a backup singer for Bob Dylan when she was just 19. I had no idea she could sing! It was fascinating to get to know her a little because she so convincingly plays characters that it’s hard to see beyond that. She’s incredible as Gemma on SOA and it’s a shame she’s only won a Golden Globe for that role, she hasn’t even been nominated for an Emmy. I hope that changes this year.
I haven’t seen the season premiere of Sons of Anarchy yet and hope to watch it when I’m done working today, so no spoilers please! I’m most interested in seeing how Gemma handles the mess she’s gotten herself into.

This is part of the reason I don’t tweet much. I’ve gotten into trouble in the past bitching about people who have done me wrong. (And we’re talking once, but that was back when you could still search on deleted tweets so the person found it anyway.) Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter took to Twitter to complain that his show was snubbed by the Emmy nominating committee. He called them old and joked that they screwed him out of a threesome with his wife, the show’s star Katey Sagal, who had “promised me a threesome if we won.” Then he went on to mock Glee and sort-of try to take it back. Classy.
After the Emmy noms were announced this morning, Kurt Sutter went to Twitter and fired off the following:
“The worse part of not getting an emmy nod. katey [his wife] promised me a threesome if she won. now i have to settle for me, her and the shaved bunny.”
“Best part of not getting an emmy nod. now i don’t have to pretend i give a s**t about the profiteering douchebag academy … because you know if we were nominated i’d be all humble and blowing smoke up their asses. now i can stay true to myself and just be a d**k.”
He continues with a joke — “These two academy member walk into a bar. one orders a beer. then they both die because they’re so f**king old.”
And … “If my mom and dad were alive this emmy snub would kill them. that’s not true, they were too old to understand my show. just like the academy.”
Sutter also took aim at “Glee” … writing, “f**k glee. hate those annoying, ‘please accept me for who i am’, singing brats. there, i said it. are you happy?”
He went on to explain, “I love ryan murphy ['Glee' creator]. he’s always very cool with me. love glee too. just tired of all the j**z piling up at its feet.”

Later he tweeted “you do know that i’m really okay with no noms right? if i was really upset, i wouldn’t be ranting. i’d be plotting. i’m all about the love” and followed up with “those who got the joke, laughed. those who didn’t, published a story. so sad that greedy media whores must turn good fun into nasty business.” It’s all our fault for paying attention to what he wrote, an argument so many celebrities have used before ad nauseum. Way to write about the same people who help promote your show.
I tried to get into Sons of Anarchy. I didn’t start from the beginning though, I started from season three, watched about four episodes and just found it too hard to keep up with. It was complicated and hard to follow. Compare that to Boardwalk Empire, which I also didn’t start watching until mid-season. There’s a lot of mobster stuff going on with that show and I’ll be honest some minor plot details were lost to me, but I could still watch it and find it entertaining. Sons of Anarchy frustrated me, but I did enjoy what I saw, just not enough to care what happened next or keep watching. Maybe it’s just not everyone’s cup of tea, it doesn’t have to do with people being too “old” to enjoy it. You wouldn’t expect a whiny bitch like Sutter to get that though. He has much more in common with Ryan Murphy than he thinks.
