I?m the kind of person who sometimes tears up during cooking shows. It?s because my mind wanders and I start thinking about the immigrant history (and current immigrant experience) of America and how all of these different people from all over the world brought their food to America and how food unites us as a people. Basically, I think a lot about food constantly, which is a very Indian thing, and Padma Lakshmi is the same. She?s got a new Hulu show called Taste of the Nation where she travels around the country and explores all of these immigrant-cuisines which were brought to America. She chatted with Parade about food and the show and more. Some highlights:
She was just a child when her family immigrated to America: ?When I first came to this country, we were limited in where we could go out to eat because I needed rice. I come from a rice culture in South India, so we?d have to go to a Chinese restaurant or a Mexican restaurant. And even though I was a young child, I was demanding Tabasco in my little Indian accent because I couldn?t taste anything.?
On hot dogs: When her mom introduced her to a New York City institution?hot dog carts?the then-vegetarian Lakshmi ordered hers with everything on it. Minus the hot dog.
She didn?t get peanut butter: ?I?d go to friends? houses and they?d make me a PB&J sandwich and I?d go, ?Oh, my God, I can?t?it?s stuck to the roof of my mouth. Now I love peanut butter, but unless you?ve grown up with it, it?s a very odd ingredient.?
Her packed lunches: Like many immigrant kids, she longed to fit in, and the school lunches of dinnertime leftovers packed by her busy single working mom didn?t make it easy. ?I was terrified to open my lunch box,? Lakshmi recalls. The fragrant Indian fare in her lunch was a stark contrast to her classmates? humdrum baloney sandwiches. ?When you opened my Tupperware, you?d get all this curry smell coming out. Indian food is delicious, but it?s not very visually appealing. I?d cringe, and kids were really mean: ?What is that? It stinks!? One of the reasons I think I was so skinny when I was a kid was because I didn?t want to open the box up.?
There is no ?all-American? food: ?We like to say that something is ?as American as apple pie. But there?s nothing American about an apple pie. Not one ingredient is from North America, not even the apples, not the cinnamon, not the lard or rendered fat or butter, not the milled flour?none of it.? Even hot dogs are German contributions, as she explores in the show?s Milwaukee episode. ?Until 100 years ago, nobody thought hot dogs were quintessentially American,? she says.
She spends an episode highlighting New York?s Indian American community, and it features her daughter Krishna: Krishna is biracial, Lakshmi says, and her culinary experience reflects that. ?She goes to her father?s house, which is [more traditionally American] when it comes to food. And then she goes to her mom?s house, where we eat with our hands if we?re having Indian food.? (Growing up on the Top Chef set also helped foster her daughter?s adventurous palate, she says.) But those kinds of ?layers of culture make us who we are. I think that?s what makes America special. We might speak different languages, we may have different spices on our chicken, but at the end of the day the deeper issues are very much the same.?

I?m fine with some Indian food, but there?s one dish which makes me so sick, even if I just smell it, I feel like throwing up (even when my dad used to make it from scratch, I would have to leave the room/house). While I like a little spice, I?m also from the old-school (?) of ?I want to taste what I?m actually eating.? I feel that way about spicy Indian food and I feel that way about barbecue too why are you lathering good meat in all of these ridiculous sauces and rubs? I want to taste the actual meat, not get a mouthful of vinegar, curry powder and tomato sauce. Anyway, yeah this sounds like a cool series.

Over Easter weekend, Padma Lakshmi posted a video where she was making a glorious looking chicken tagine (a classic Moroccan dish). I enjoy all of these cooking-show experts showing off their home-cooking skills in quarantine, and you can definitely see who is enjoying the challenge and who is not. Padma seemed a bit frazzled as she made the tagine and as you can see the screencap and video, she was just wearing a lowkey stretchy cotton dress. And no bra.
Which brings up an issue that?s been going around for weeks: are we, as women, just going braless in lockdown? Many women say yes, that they haven?t worn bras in weeks and their girls are going free. Some people like yours truly have been going braless more often, but are still generally trying to keep some semblance of bra-wearing normalcy. It helps that I?ve worked from home for years and I find that ?putting on a bra? signals, to me, that I?m in ?work mode.? Am I the only one keeping up that small marker of professional responsibility? Or is everyone simply letting it all hang out?
That being said, if my girls looked as perky as Padma?s, I would be going braless every single day, no matter what. And obviously, Padma is cooking IN HER OWN HOME. She was just bumming around her own kitchen, trying to teach people how to cook tagine. But that didn?t stop people from making nasty comments on her Instagram about her perky ?immoral? breasts. So Padma made another cooking video and this time she wore TWO bras (one of them a sports bra) and she wrote this:
(I got some comments last time that it was immoral for me to not wear a bra in my own kitchen during the quarantine. So those people should be happy to note that I?m wearing two today ?) But seriously, let?s not police women?s bodies in 2020 ok?

Well, she dealt with that as well as can be expected. Honestly, her boobs are slightly distracting in the tagine video? but of course she has every right to wear (or not wear) whatever she wants, whenever she wants. It?s not a question of morality, for the love of God. Also: I think her boobs hypnotized me into wanting to make chicken tagine.

Endometriosis is a condition that affects one in ten women in which the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. It can be very painful, especially during your period, and can affect fertility and your sex life. Among the women who have discussed their battle with endometriosis are Julianne Hough, Halsey, Tia Mowry-Hardict, Daisy Ridley and Padma Lakshmi. Padma cofounded the Endometriosis Foundation of America and used to be bedridden from endometriosis before she had surgery. In a new interview with People, she talks about how embarrassed she was by it, both as a teen and an adult when she used to make up excuses and cover stories for not being able to work. Padma has been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Development Programme.
?I was so embarrassed about it,? Lakshmi said of the endometriosis diagnosis. ?I would lie to my agent and say, ?Oh I have a migraine? and then the next month I?d say ?I have the stomach flu.? ?
?A lot of people are speaking about it and that?s good.?
?As we celebrate International Women?s Day, let?s remember that women and girls face some of the worst discrimination and hardships in the world,? Lakshmi said at a press conference held at UNDP headquarters in New York.
?My main mission as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador will be to shine a spotlight on the fact that inequality can affect people in rich and poor countries alike.?
As a mother, Lakshmi feels that the lessons told to little boys and little girls needs to be changed, saying, ?Women are told to be nice, we are told to get along, to be adjusting, go with the flow, work really hard, be perfect, be polite, be pretty, be alluring but not too alluring because then it is your fault. Whereas, boys are raised to be strong and brave and go after what they want and take life by the horns.?
?We are telling little girls something different than what we are telling little boys,? she continued. ?We are sending them out to the same ocean to swim together. I used to think intelligence is the greatest quality to have, but now I honestly believe it is empathy. I think that is really important to be teaching our little boys and girls. Empathy.?

Weve heard so many horror stories about how debilitating periods can be, both physically and psychologically. The documentary short which won the Oscar this year, Period. End of Sentence, highlights how menstruation can keep women from completing school in rural India. Padma is right that women get different messages about how were supposed to act and who were supposed to be, and that our physiology is used to further that divide.
Im getting an endometrial ablation later today, Wednesday. While I dont believe I have endometriosis, Ive felt awful and have had symptoms lasting longer than my period for months. Im in premenopause and its as if I have my period 2 to 3 weeks out of the month. All of my friends who have ablations say they worked for them so Im really hoping it works for me too.

The more I learn about endometriosis, the more I wish I had become informed sooner. As I mention when I cover these stories, I used to have periods that were so painful that I had to work from bed. (They?ve recently returned but I?m 45, they?re not going to stick around for long.) While I haven?t been diagnosed with endometriosis, my symptoms fit. Celebrities are speaking out about their experiences with the condition as part of endometriosis awareness month. We just heard from musician Halsey, who said that her periods have affected her career to the point where she had to tell the men around her, who couldn?t deal with her needing to take time off, to ?suck it up.? Other celebrities who have the condition include Lena Dunham, Julianne Hough, Daisy Ridley and Jamie King. Padma Lakshmi, who has been open about suffering from endo, recently spoke to People Magazine. I didn?t know that she co-founded The Endometriosis Foundation of America nine years ago. Padma said that she had a host of problems that she wasn?t aware were due to endometriosis until she was diagnosed 36. She emphasized that if you?re in bed for more than two days when you have your period that it?s important to get a professional opinion.
?Once a week, every month, I was bedridden,? the Top Chef host, 47, tells PEOPLE Now. ?I got my period when I was 13 and didn?t get diagnosed until I was 36. That?s 23 years, 12 months a year, 12 weeks from, you know, that I was missing at volleyball practice, the school dance, midterm exams, helping my mom cook the family meal. All these things that?s part and parcel of being a teenage kid.?
Since March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, Lakshmi is hoping to bring attention to what she calls ?a very isolating disease.?
?No one wants to talk about their period. It?s not my nature to go on TV and talk about my vagina, but it was such a good cause and I saw how much better my life was after I had surgery and got the proper treatment. I was like, ?Oh! This is what normal people feel like,’? she says.
Lakshmi, who co-founded of the Endometriosis Foundation of America in 2009, also shared her experience and the common warning signs.
She explains that if, during your period, you have heavy bleeding, ?such bad cramps that over the counter medication is not taking care of it, if your bra size goes up a cup during that time? they could be signs of endometriosis.
?I had headaches, I had numbness in one leg, I had lower back pain, I had all kinds of digestive problems, and a lot of time they just tell you that you have to grin and bare it,? she says. ?This is our lot in life because we?re girls and we have babies. Pain is your bodies way of telling you something is wrong.?
Lakshmi also urges women to ?listen to [their] body.?
?If you are down for more than two days, if you can?t go about your business for more than two days, to work, to the gym, be with your family, cook, see your friends, you should seek professional help,? she says. ?And don?t just go to your gynecologist ? look up a specialist. Someone who specializes in PCOS, fibroids and endometriosis because those are all ailments that have to do with the female reproductive system.?

Let?s take a moment to celebrate what complete bosses we are, because an advocate just reminded us that if we?re in bed for more than two days a month we need to seek help. Can you imagine if there was a condition that put men in bed just one day a month? If women made up in the majority in power, would we be trying to limit access to the medication for that condition?

I?m half-Indian and I have similar coloring with Padma Lakshmi and Mindy Kaling, and considering they were on the red carpet within minutes of each other, it made me stop and think: would I ever, EVER wear these colors? And that?s a no. It?s not just because I don?t really like bile/chartreuse colors, nor do I care for yellows, mustards, goldenrods, etc. I simply don?t believe that these are the best colors for typically “Indian coloring.”
Padma Lakshmi wore this Romona Keveza in bile/chartreuse. While I can?t stand the color, I have to admit? she?s so beautiful that she sort of pulls it off. I would have loved this same dress in a richer green, a blue, a red, even a pink. Hell, it would have been great in black or white too. I think the construction is great and if you?re going to go for a silk/satin dress, this is probably the way to do it. I just can?t get past the color though.
Mindy Kaling wore this mustard-y Salvador Perez gown. Sigh? I can?t. First of all, the dress looks so different in photos than it did when she was being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest. On TV, the detailing looked richer, more interesting. In photos, it looks cheap. Again, when you can coloring like Mindy and Padma, you can pull off so many colors. You can pull off most jewel tones AND pastels. You can pull off a clean white or a simple black. You just cannot pull off yellows and yellow-greens. Those colors are difficult for nearly every woman.

It looks like they?ll both be going stag to Halloween parties this year as Padma Lakshmi and Richard Gere have called off their romance.
The ?Pretty Woman? hunk began dating the ?Top Chef? cutie back in April, though they were able to avoid getting too public with their relationship for the most part.
An insider told Page Six that Richard and Padma ?decided they would be better as friends,? and Lakshmi herself told both Ellen DeGeneres and ?Today? that she?s currently single.
In the past, Padma was married to author Salman Rushdie from 2004 to 2007 and has a three-year-old daughter with ex-boyfriend Adam Dell.

She can certainly cook up a storm in the kitchen, and it turns out Padma Lakshmi can also steam up the cover of Boston Common magazine.
The ?Top Chef? host looks gorgeous in her photo spread, and in her interview she opens up about her personal struggle with endometriosis.
Lakshmi explains, ?I went through five surgeries and a very painful divorce, and I was alone. And in the process of all these tests, I was told that I probably wouldn?t be able to have children. I just got so mad??
?I was angry because I did have access to great healthcare. I was fortunate; I wasn?t living in a remote area of the world?[I was in] New York, LA, London. And like many women of my generation, you don?t investigate your fertility, then you don?t know until it?s too late. I thought, ?How could I have gone through my life and not known about it?? I thought other women should know about it.?
Padma also discussed her role in helping establish the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research back in 2009. ?It?s insane we didn?t have [a gynepathology research center in the US]. Gynepathology affects half the population?as in, half the residents of the world are women. And yet we don?t have a research center in one of the leading medical countries of the world. But? we? do? no-ow.?
As for the decision-making process on ?Top Chef,? she shared, ?It?s not about what I prefer. It?s how well you did what that dish is supposed to be like. There?s an empirical way to cook chicken and not cook chicken. I always try to be honest, but I try to give them good feedback, too. I will say, ?I can see what you?re going for, and I really do appreciate that you wanted to do a pesto, but you didn?t want to use basil so you used cilantro and mint. The problem is that cilantro and mint oxidize at a different rate than basil does, so you need to work on this. But it?s a good idea and you should file this away.??

Padma Lakshmi was in Miami over the weekend, the only place in the country where it’s currently 80 degrees. Anyway, she looked stunning in a red bikini and this really needs to be mentioned. She’s 43. I know people who don’t look that good and they’re 20-something. Jesus christ, how many placentas did she have to eat to look like this.
