Sarah Silverman is up for an Emmy for her (now canceled) series I Love You, America. I?ve never watched it because A) I don?t like Silverman and B) I find the premise to be? cloying, I guess. The premise of the show was that Silverman travels around and talks to people who are generally terrible, and she tries to understand where they?re coming from. She also interviewed people who were not terrible too. The idea is to embrace the diversity of opinions and beliefs and intolerance in all of America. Even though the show was canceled, Sarah still spoke to the LA Times about her Emmy nomination and what?s happening in comedy these days. Her comments are already being widely panned. On connecting with people she disagrees with: ?I just think this is a time to connect with people. I feel so cocky talking about it, it?s just a stupid show, but the whole point of this administration is to divide us. I also think it?s interesting what?s happened on the left. It?s almost like there?s a mutated McCarthy era, where any comic better watch anything they say. If you have a special and someone doesn?t agree with every single thing you say on that special you know, [Dave] Chappelle says it at the beginning of his special [?Sticks and Stones,? on Netflix], and he still gets so much ? for it. I loved it. There were things in it that I did not like. But has there been a special you love and agree with across the board? That?s comedy: You overstep. You say things you might not even believe by the time it comes out. You?re always changing. It?s art. It?s not politics.
On cancel culture: ?I?ve said it before, there?s this kind of ?righteousness p0rn? going on with canceling people over their past, a thing they said or a moment they had, with no earnest hope that they may be changed. We see Megan Phelps-Roper, who grew up in the [anti-gay] Westboro Baptist Church, and we love her because she?s changed. But if we met her seven years ago, would she just have to be someone we had no hope for? She changed because people on social media talked to her warmly. Christian Picciolini was on the show, who was a neo-Nazi skinhead and was changed because someone gave him compassion even though he didn?t deserve it, in his words. So I always [ask myself], ?Is this a ?before? Christian Picciolini?? It?s not very Jesus-like to just cancel people.?
On wanting to be right: ?I have to ask myself sometimes too, ?Would I want this person to be changed or do I secretly want them to stay wrong so I can point to them as wrong and myself as right?? And that?s dark. And I see it. I see it in people I love or agree with on lots of things. So many hard lines ? things need to be black and white and you need to know the answer. It can?t be ambiguous. And I think that?s a mistake. And that?s why, when you see transcripts of, like, a comic?s joke, or two different people who said the same thing ? in one case it could be OK and in one case it could be up. Why? Because the intent matters, and what the person?s soul is.?

I?m going to be generous for a moment and say that I don?t have an issue with people trying to connect and understand each other on a personal level. But that presupposes that both people are honest brokers and are willing to meet halfway to have an honest conversation, and both are open to learning and listening. And my concern if I was in Silverman?s position, trying to do this as entertainment is that instead of a promotion of learning, listening and understanding, you?re instead giving a platform for hate speech, and you?re promoting the worst ?bad actors? in society. At some point, I don?t really give a sh-t if I neo-Nazi is just some dude in pain. He?s still a fking neo-Nazi, you know?
As for what she says about ?righteousness p0rn? and cancel culture? whenever people complain about how comedians can?t get a fair shake or so-and-so didn?t deserve to be ?canceled,? I just think about all of the people who were genuinely hurt, or how stupid it is to be an aggreived white man who thinks ?comedy? is punching down and/or abusing women. Some people deserve to be fking canceled.

Louis CK had a little vacation. That was his ?punishment? for sexually harassing multiple women over the course of his career. He took a little break and some of his projects got canceled, all because he liked to whip it out and masturbate in front of often-horrified women, often female comics who had much less power and access than him. Whenever one of them tried to speak out, Louis and his bros made sure to run her out of the comedy world or our of Hollywood. Louis CK is already back in comedy clubs, making everyone uncomfortable and generally being gross.
But I have no doubt that Louis CK will have a thorough ?comeback.? Even in the first weeks of his ?exile/vacation,? all of his friends were already falling all over themselves to justify and excuse his behavior. Well, Sarah Silverman is still friends with Louis CK. And she wants everyone to know that? he whipped it out and jerked off in front of her too. But she liked it. Silverman appeared on Monday?s Howard Stern Show (on SiriusXM) and here?s some of what she said:
When they were younger, he did it all the time: I know Im going to regret saying this. Ive known Louis forever. Im not making excuses for him, so please dont take this that way. We are peers. We are equals. Sometimes Id go, ?Fk yeah, I want to see that! ? We were only just friends. Sometimes, yeah, I wanted to see it. It was amazing. Sometimes I would say, ?Fking no, gross, and we got pizza. Sarah made sure to explain that her encounters are not analogous to the other women that are talking about what he did to them. She insisted that they were simply letting our freak flags fly.
She thinks Louis just failed to realize he couldn?t do that when he became more powerful: ?Once he became powerful, even within just his [comedy] community, he felt like he was the same person, but the dynamic was different and it was not OK.?
Louis has remorse: ?I?m not saying everyone should embrace Louis again. I believe he has remorse. I just want him to talk about it on stage. He?s going to have to find his way or not find his way.?
On Louis returning to comedy clubs: I get it. Im not in the business of telling people how to feel. Hes my brother and I love him. I can understand, I can try to understand him I think Im too close to really see the big picture.

Can I get away with just writing ?hard pass? and leaving it at that? I swear it?s not a ?hard? pun, ugh. I just don?t understand the purpose of this kind of interview surely all of the celebrities and comedians who love Louis CK also see how his actions hurt their industry? When will someone like Sarah Silverman stand up and say ?yeah, he?s my friend, but I can?t justify what he did and my thoughts are with the women who felt violated by his actions and the women whose careers were altered by his actions.? You know who said something like that? Amy Schumer, when she talked about Aziz Ansari there?s a way to balance ?he?s a friend? and ?but what he did was awful.? I left feeling like ?who is this interview for?? Who is Silverman trying to win over? Men?s Rights Activists?

I always had a mixture of emotions about Michael Sheen and Sarah Silverman?s relationship. He went from Rachel McAdams to Sarah Silverman pretty quickly, and it made me feel bad for Rachel. Plus, I just didn?t ?get? Silverman and Sheen together – she’s quirky and funny, and he’s brooding and Welsh. As time went on, I understood it a bit more. He?s funny too, and she has a serious and dark side, so they sort of complemented each other.
Anyway, back in December 2016 – shortly after Baby Fisted Caligula ?won? the election – Sheen announced that he was planning on moving back to England/Wales full time after spending much of the previous decade living and working in America. I remember thinking at the time that it sounded like bad news for his relationship with Silverman. And guess what? I was right.
The great @michaelsheen & I consciously uncoupled over Christmas. I mean, not ?over Christmas? – like that wasn?t the fight that ended it. No fight. We just live in different countries & it got hard. Felt we should just tell y?all so u stop askin, ?How?s Michael/How?s Sarah??

Sarah Silverman has a new talk show on Hulu called, I Love You, America. It?s produced by Funny or Die and airs on Thursday evenings. Has anyone seen it? I was going to give it a try the other day but got sidetracked and never got around to it. I?d like to hear any thoughts on it. I want to check it out because I like some of Sarah?s comedy and want to support women-driven shows. Also, because I can?t quite grasp the concept ? it?s a 30-minute talk show where Sarah is trying to connect with people who are ideologically opposed to her. According to the few reviews I?ve read, she?s seems to be legitimately trying to understand ?the other side? so for that, I commend her. Feelings are mixed about whether the show is working but most are willing to wait and see, especially because apparently Sarah said up front that everything is subject to change based on if it?s working.
Sarah spoke to The New York Daily News’s Confidential about politics and mindfulness, which is the bent of her show. According to Sarah, our worship of the Almighty Dollar is detracting from our mindfulness.
Is Sarah Silverman going soft? The actress and comedian, who has bluntly and even shockingly addressed sexism, religion and racism, wants to do something different on her new Hulu talk show ?I Love You, America,? which she describes as ?social politics wrapped in a big, doughy bready sandwich of aggressively dumb and silly, which is my favorite.?
?I?m trying to be mindful, especially with this show,? the 46-year-old told Confidential. ?It?s trying to remember humanity, lean into vulnerability, just try and be human.?
?You know this theme of division is not something that?s coincidental,? Silverman told Confidential. ?I think it behooves certain people, oligarchs, certain corporations, people within the far right, wealth addicts, keeping a country divided makes it easier to control. I find that wildly blatant these days and I find myself susceptible to it too.?
Silverman, who grew up in a political family ? her mother was a photographer on the George McGovern presidential campaign ? says part of the problem today is teaching children bad values.
?It?s really bizarre,? she said. ?It?s ?Real Housewives,? and Kardashians and Trump. This is just worshipping money no matter how that money is made, no matter whose blood is on it. If young kids were interested in Ruth Bader Ginsberg, then things would be different, but they?re not. I wish they were.?

I can?t really find fault in what she says, people do worship money without caring how it?s made. But I can?t absolve myself from that so it?s hard to comment on it. I don?t want to be a Real Housewife or a Kardashian but I have found myself envious of some part of those people?s lives, whether it?s the extensive traveling or the lavish parties or massive wardrobes. I?d like to think I?d turn down money if it had blood on it but I still want a beach house so what am I worshiping? I would prefer Ruth Bader Ginsburg came to dinner at my house but I?d rather have Carrie Bradshaw?s shoe collection than Judge Ginsburg?s. I understand her concerns about kids, mine talk about money all the time. But that is largely due to my saying no to them, usually because ?we don?t have the money for that.? As they get older, they understand that we aren?t broke, be we must 1) live by a budget and 2) decide which is the best use of any extra money we do have. I see that as my responsibility, though, not the Kardashians. Like I said, I don?t find fault in what Sarah is saying, I?m simply unclear as to whom she?s blaming.

I don?t think this story will surprise anyone. Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel dated on and off for seven years before breaking up for good in 2009. They’ve both moved on but remain friendly in the press since. So as Sarah was promoting her new show, I Love You, America at Hulu?s upfronts Wednesday, she was asked about Jimmy?s emotional monologue regarding his newborn son?s open-heart surgery. Sarah, of course, was moved liked the rest of us, although she?d already been in contact with him. She also applauded his taking the opportunity to reiterate the importance of making healthcare available to those who need it.
I like the way Sarah handled this. She maintained the family?s privacy, she didn?t sensationalize it or make it about her and kept her emotions in check. It?s very easy to write off a new father crying over his fragile newborn because it’s an emotional time. But Sarah bringing it back to the importance of Jimmy, ?just also taking the time for a plea, a very bipartisan plea, to not be cutting spending and healthcare for people.”Anyone would have excused a new dad to be completely insular in his mindset after what Jimmy went through but he wasn?t. Since he had the money to pay for his son?s care and will for a long time to come, he put himself in the shoes of those who couldn?t and made a plea for them.
Unfortunately, not everyone saw it that way. Like former congressman and radio host Joe Walsh, who took time out of his busy schedule of chewing on puppies to tweet this:

Anyway, as much as I think Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen are one of the oddest celebrity-couples out there, I have to admit that they do complement each other pretty well. He?s allegedly pretty anti-marriage, and while he?s a devoted father to Lily (Lily?s mom is Kate Beckinsale), my guess is that he?s probably not interested in having any more kids. I think that?s probably one of big reasons why he didn?t work out with Rachel McAdams – she probably wanted to get married and have a kid and he didn?t. So now he?s with Sarah Silverman, who doesn?t really want kids either. She tweeted this late Monday, seemingly apropos of nothing:
?As a comic always working & on the road I have had to decide between motherhood & living my fullest life & I chose the latter. Men don’t have to do that. I’d so love to be a fun dad, coming home from the road & being my best fun dad self. So this is just a lil f–k all y’all bc u can’t be a woman w/out sacrifice & that’s the fact jack. True story: did you know Silverman is 46 years old? While it?s not outside the realm of possibilities that a 46-year-old woman can become a first-time mother, I also think that choosing to be child-free is something Silverman decided a long time ago. I wasn?t even aware that Silverman still does consistent stand-up, or that she?s always on the road. Is she? I?ll take her word for it. As for her choice? that?s what it is, a personal choice. Some women and men don?t want kids. Some women and men prioritize their careers. Some women and men don?t believe you have to have children to be apart of a family. She?s also right that it IS different for women and that most men don?t have to make these kinds of choices.

Sarah Silverman was one of the surprise nominations for a SAG, for her work in the film I Smile Back as a mom suffering from depression and addiction. Lead Actress in a Drama went to Brie Larson, for Room. Sarah seemed pleased to be nominated and also to present. During her red carpet interview with Giuliana Rancic, Sarah reference the fact that she was caught with a pot vaporizer at the SAGs last year when Giuliana rifled through her purse. She joked last night that she didn’t bring a purse because “Last time I showed you my purse… everyone noticed I had weed. I won that Emmy that year…and I was totally overshadowed.”

Silverman put a mustache on while she was presenting, which I didn’t get at all, but People explains that she did it in 2009 at the Emmys too.
In terms of her gown, it’s got that precarious bustline that Westwood is known for and it fits her like a glove but I would have liked to see this dress in a darker color. That light tan color does nothing for her.
Speaking of doing nothing for her, here’s Amanda Peet in a white Narciso Rodriguez gown that just looks like a slip. Amanda was there supporting her husband, Game of Thrones producer David Benioff. She’s wearing less makeup than I wear to take my kid to school. Glam it up, it’s an awards ceremony!
Giuliana Rancic was in a Gauri and Nainika black ballgown with black leaf applique accented by green and white. Do you know the expression “the dress is wearing her?”

I Smile Back follows the story Laney Brooks (Silverman) who does bad things. Married with kids, she takes the drugs she wants, sleeps with the men she wants, disappears when she wants. Now, with the destruction of her family looming, and temptation everywhere, Laney makes one last desperate attempt at redemption.
