After cruising to an easy third round US Open victory, Maria Sharapova made a surprise post-match comment regarding her personal life that immediately overshadowed the on-court action.
The 25-year-old Russian ace - who beat Mallory Burdette 6-1, 6-1 - revealed that she and now ex-fiance Sasha Vujacic have called off their engagement and put an end to their relationship.
Miss Sharapova continued to tell that she and her former Los Angeles Lakers guard beau of three years went their separate ways back in late spring.
Surprised at how long it took before being asked about her romantic situation, Maria said, "It's been since the end of spring. I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question."
As for having kept the breakup news out of the headlines for the entire summer, Sharapova explained, "I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well."
Lastly, Sharapova noted that lack of time together due to work demands was the main reason behind the parting, telling, "It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling and especially his career move to Turkey. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. I still would love to call him as a friend. We spent really great years together."

The 24-year-old tennis ace, who took to Los Angeles' Nokia Theater in a picturesque cut-out black and gold dress with sparkling gold heels, joined NBA pro Amar'e Stoudemire and actress Rachel Nichols to present the evening's "Best Upset" award.
Meanwhile, word that the Maria will not be returning to New Zealand's ASB Classic this January has made waves around the tennis community.
Instead, Sharapova will prepare for the Australian Open by heading to the Brisbane International - this move upgrades her winnings as the tournament has been deemed premier status by the WTA.

The 24-year-old Russian babe went up against China?s Li Na (29) this morning (June 2) at Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.
And despite her best efforts, Ms. Sharapova seemed to be thrown off by the winds, which affected her high ball toss on the serve.
In the end, Li Na emerged victorious, while Maria had to say goodbye to her shot at winning the career grand slam.

The blonde tennis hottie looked to be in good spirits as she made her exit from the terminal, sporting a black cardigan with a brown scarf.
Ms. Sharapova is in town to take part in the ASB Classic where she?ll compete against a field of fifteen players from around the world.

Making the most of the final day before his NBA season gets underway, Sasha Vujacic and his fiance Maria Sharapova enjoyed a lovers stroll in Newport Beach on Monday morning (October 25).
The Lakers basketball player and his tennis star lady were hand-in-hand as they popped into Peets Coffee for a morning java boost before continuing along with a leisurely day alongside one another.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Miss Sharapova received her wedding proposal from Mr Vujacic on Tuesday at his Manhattan Beach, California house.
Reports tell that Maria and Sasha have been great for each other, both in the personal realm as well as in their athletic careers, as Vujacic told press, "As two pro athletes -- in different sports -- we both understand what the other is doing and going through, and what it takes to do well in what we do. She's working hard. I'm working hard. It's good together.''
