For my money, Gabrielle Union was one of the best-dressed women on Oscar night, and she didn?t even attend the Oscars. Gabrielle just did the parties. She wore this absolutely stunning Valentino gown in a reddish pumpkin shade which 100% works because of her skin, body and hair. Gabrielle recently chopped her hair off and OMG does this choppy cut look cute. Hands down, one of my favorite looks.
I stan Liberty Ross. She dumped a cheating husband and landed a billionaire. She and Jimmy Iovine attend the VF party every year. Love her.
Tiffany Haddish in Rami Kadi. This is a glorious mess and she comes close to making it work.
Selma Blair in Ralph & Russo, walking her first big red carpet since her MS diagnosis. She walked with a cane and she got quite emotional on the carpet. Great dress!
Lupita Nyongo in Oscar De La Renta -weirdly, I don?t think she actually attended the Oscars, she just did the afterparties? Which is fine, I guess. Her dress was cute!

| Gabrielle Union to mommy shamers: It's okay to unfollow, I don't answer to anyone | Added 5 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Gabrielle Union just welcomed her daughter, Kaavia James, in November, after suffering several miscarriages. Shes been posting adorable photos of Kaavia to Instagram. Like most famous moms, Gabrielle has of course had her share of mommy shamers, many of whom shes responded to. Where does she draw the strength to take these folks on? It?s easy, Gabrielle loves herself.
Gabrielle Union is learning how to live her best life without apology.
The actress ? who welcomed her now 3-month-old daughter Kaavia James with husband Dwyane Wade, 37, via surrogate on Nov. 7 ? is often candid (and hilarious) when it comes to parenthood, but being so open has a downside.
Ever since her daughter?s birth, Union has taken flak on social media for everything from not wearing what some consider ?age-appropriate? clothing to kissing her baby on the mouth.
?I had to hit the mommy shamers day one,? Union, 46, tells PEOPLE in this week?s issue, on newsstands Friday. ?I?m going to do it my way. I?m sure I?m going to make all kinds of mistakes and when I ask for help, which I will, I would love to hear all y?all?s advice. Everybody has been on my journey of pain and anguish and trauma, and I owe it to myself to enjoy every second of my joy.?
?If you?ve been rocking with me, in my misery and my pain and my failures, I want you to enjoy my joys,? she says. ?If you can?t just sit back and enjoy the miracles without offering every piece of advice Nana ever gave you, it?s okay to unfollow. It?s okay to just enjoy the ride.?
By standing up for herself online, Union wants to show people that they can live their best lives on their own terms and have agency over their body and choices.
?I want to be able to make whatever choice I want to make and not have to answer to anybody but me,? she says. ?As long as I feel good, as long as I feel confident, screw you. Look in the mirror and fix your own life. [I want to] give people that example of somebody who refuses to let anyone dictate what the hell I do or don?t do or say or don?t say.?
She adds, ?It?s okay to rock with yourself. I?m my favorite person on the planet. I enjoy my own company. I find that people who don?t enjoy their own company tend to comment the most on other people?s lives ? take your life back. The world doesn?t end when you do what the hell you want.?
[From People]
I wouldnt say I am my favorite person, but I do enjoy my own company. Especially when I?m complaining because I almost always agree with myself. I also dont let others determine what I do. I do try and listen to advice and have made positive parenting changes. However, the people offering me advice are very different than the trolls and commenters Gabrielle is referring to. Shes listening, though. When she was hit with all the criticism about kissing her baby on the mouth, she responded, ?Hey guys I appreciate all the concern about kisses on the mouth and labored breathing, I am blessed enough to have a nurse here with us while at work.? This is how I?ve come to handle it too. I also get a second opinion. Sometimes people who give advice are well-intended. And sometimes they?re right. And if they aren?t right? Then I sit alone in a room and bitch about them while agreeing with myself.

A few days ago, a local Florida news affiliate decided to post a story about some local Florida celebrities: Dwyane Wade and his wife, popular film and television actress, women?s rights advocate, author, businesswoman and all-around amazing human being Gabrielle Union. Only they just referred to her as ?wife.? FFS:

Gabrielle Union spent much of this year promoting her memoir, We?re Going To Need More Wine. She?s been on a book tour for months, and her book tour largely coincided with the unfolding stories of Sex Predatorgate 2017. In her book, Gabrielle wrote about her own rape – which happened when she was a teenager – as well as her fertility issues and the racism and sexism she encounters every day as a black woman in Hollywood. Union did an excellent interview with the New York Times this week, which you can read here:

| Gabrielle Union tried to cure a yeast infection by putting yogurt up there | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

People Magazine has a new story with alternative medical advice from a celebrity, complete with advice from a gynecologist, that genuinely surprised me. It didn’t faze me that a celebrity was giving homegrown medical advice, that happens all the time. What I found interesting is the fact that the advice was at worst benign and at best could be helpful. I’ve heard before that you can treat a vaginal yeast infection with natural (not flavored!) yogurt, applied internally. I thought that this was one of those home remedies that you shouldn’t try and that could ultimately hurt you. Gabrielle Union said that she did this, she didn’t say whether it worked, and an actual Yale medical school gynecologist whom People consulted confirmed that it’s not a bad treatment but may be ineffective, especially compared to antifungal over the counter treatments. Well damn.
?I ended up in a situation where I had a yeast infection, and I didn?t want to go to CVS to buy Monistat,? Union told Unstyled, Refinery 29?s fashion podcast. ?I called my girlfriend, who always has an answer for everything, and she was like, ?Go get yogurt and then you?re gonna just put the yogurt up your vagina.? ?
Union said she picked up some vanilla-flavored yogurt, then got to work applying it?with little success. ?It?s not going in, it?s just slapped on the outside, which is providing a bit of relief, but I need to get it in there,? she recalled. So she called back her friend, who recommended using a straw from a local fast-food joint as a makeshift applicator.
Union didn?t say whether the yogurt worked. So we decided to ask a gynecologist if yogurt really can cure a yeast infection, or at least ease symptoms, such as itching and burning.
While an over-the-counter antifungal cream or prescription oral med are the preferred methods of treatment for a yeast infection, yogurt does seem to offer at least temporary relief, says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, clinical professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale Medical School. ?A yeast infection is an overgrowth of yeast, and the good-guy bacteria in yogurt, the lactobacilli, maintain an acidic environment, which makes it hostile for yeast to grow.?
However, she cautions, the strain of bacteria that?s native to the vagina may be different from the strain in your favorite yogurt. If that?s the case, the yogurt may not help much after all. Since there?s no way to tell which brand is best suited to your body, at least make sure you?re buying a yogurt with live cultures, or you won?t get any yeast-fighting benefits, says Dr. Minkin. Opt for an unflavored variety too.
Flavored yogurts, especially fruity ones with jellies or jams, can be packed with sugar, and sugar can fuel the growth of vaginal yeast, she adds.
To keep the mess minimal, apply the yogurt internally rather than externally on the vulva. To do so, a makeshift applicator like Union?s straw isn?t a terrible idea, Dr. Minkin says, ?although it might scratch you, whereas other applicators are smoother.? You can actually purchase vaginal suppository applicators online (like this 15-pack for $12 at Amazon) or at a pharmacy, she says, and simply fill the applicator with yogurt.
If an applicator isn?t available, coating your finger with yogurt before inserting it into your vagina works just fine too. You can also dab a little yogurt on a tampon and insert it that way, as Health?s medical editor Roshini Raj, MD, has previously recommended.
Your most mess-free option for yeast infection relief might be to regularly eat yogurt. Delivering those lactobacilli to your gut can help ward off future infections, Dr. Minkin says?and you?ll get some protein and calcium while you?re at it…
?If it works, great! If not, at least you haven?t hurt yourself,? Dr. Minkin says.
[From People]
Kudos to People for doing the leg work on this one and getting a gynecologist’s advice. Honestly I eat too much sugar, I’m pretty addicted to the stuff because Jelly Bellies are amazing, and that leads to yeast infections. (This is why I blog anonymously you guys, I like to talk about my embarrassing health and relationship problems and dish about my friends.) It’s never occurred to me to try the age-old method of applying yogurt to my lady parts, but I’m slightly more likely to try it now that I’ve read this story. (Like ever so slightly, it’s still doubtful that I’ll give it a chance.) When you can go to the drugstore and pay $9 for a three day treatment that will surely cure it, why mess around with yogurt? However when you have the stuff in your fridge, don’t feel like driving to CVS and there’s a spare Wendy’s straw still in the wrapper in the back of your silverware drawer, why not? It’s not going to hurt you at least, which is more than you can say for using Jade instead of kegel weights.

| Gabrielle Union discusses fertility: 'I have had eight or nine miscarriages' | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Gabrielle Union has been with Dwyane Wade for years now. Gabrielle was accused of being ?the other woman? when Wade?s first marriage to Siohvaughn Funches broke down, and when I say that, I mean that Siohvaughn openly accused Gabrielle of being a shady homewrecker. Wade and Funches had two sons together, Zaire and Zion, plus Wade is raising his nephew Dahveon. Plus, Wade got another woman pregnant when he was with Gabrielle, so there?s another boy, Xavier, in the mix too. Basically, when Gabrielle married Wade in 2014, she became a stepmother to four growing boys (two of whom are teenagers now). I always wondered why Gabrielle and Dwyane didn?t have a child together, but Gabrielle always talked about how she didn?t really want kids of her own in interviews. Now, in her new book, Gabrielle reveals that she actually did want or does want kids, but she?s had big problems carrying a pregnancy. Her book is called We?re Going to Need More Wine. This is a sad story:
Gabrielle Union has revealed she has suffered multiple miscarriages in attempted to have a much-longed for baby with NBA star husband Dwyane Wade. In her new book We?re Going to Need More Wine ? excerpted exclusively in the new issue of PEOPLE ? the star of BET?s Being Mary Jane opens up about her struggles with infertility and failed IVF treatments.
?I have had eight or nine miscarriages,? Union, 44, writes in the book. ?For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant ? I?ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.?
While Union has spoken about IVF previously, she did not reveal the heartbreaking struggle she has faced. But even after enduring three years of failed IVF cycles and being constantly bloated from the hormones, Union writes that she and Wade ?remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we?ve both dreamed of.?
The pair tied the knot in August 2014 and at first, the star didn?t see children as part of her future. But, after realizing how much joy she felt raising three boys with Wade, 35 ? his nephew Dahveon Morris, 16, and sons from a previous marriage Zaire, 15, and Zion, 10 (Wade?s third son Xavier, 3, conceived with another woman while Wade and Union were broken up, lives with his mother) ? Union first discovered that having a baby was something she wanted.
?I never wanted kids,? she tells PEOPLE. ?Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I?d rather be than with them.?
Dealing with infertility while being in the public eye hasn?t been easy for Union, who constantly is reminded of her struggle each time she?s asked by both family and strangers alike when she?s having kids.
?For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ?Do you want kids?’? she says. ?A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ?no? because that?s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.?
?Once a month I look like I?m in my second trimester because I?m bloated,? she says. ?It leads to the questions and it leads to the rumors and anytime I go into a doctor?s office I feel like I?m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don?t want people to speculate.?
[From People]
As I said, I?ve always idly wondered why Gabrielle and Dwyane didn?t try to have a child together. But she?s absolutely right – those kinds of questions and speculations are frustrating to women who are going through fertility issues. Not to mention, those conversations are none of my business. Still, people are going to gossip. Everyone gossips, and it?s not always done with an evil or shady motivation. Sometimes, people are just curious and mean no harm. And now they?ll know – Gabrielle?s fighting a war with her own body. Nine miscarriages? my God. Poor Gabrielle.

| Gabrielle Union in Zuhair Murad at the Emmys: goth-romantic or too heavy? | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Gabrielle Union was an interesting addition to the Emmys last night – she came out as a presenter, and Union noted on her Twitter: ?I’ve been doing TV since 1995. This will be my 1st time going to the Emmys & I’m presenting an award! 22 yrs later. #OvernightSucces.? That sucks that this was the first time she?s ever gone to the Emmys or been invited to present. Jesus. So for her big Emmy coming-out, Gabrielle wore this Zuhair Murad which reads to me as sort of goth and dark-romance. I like it, even though it feels a tad too ?heavy? for a September awards show. If I could change one thing, I would have made her take off the necklace – that adds too much ?weight? to the look. Her date was her husband, Dwayne Wade.
Anna Faris wore Marc Jacobs and didn?t walk the Emmys red carpet. I think she was there mostly because the Emmys aired on CBS, and her show is on CBS, so promotion or whatever. Allison Janney seemed very protective of her and I just got the vibe that Anna didn?t want to be there, post-separation from Chris Pratt. The dress sort of reflects that – a boring dress that she?s not connected to at all. It?s probably something her stylist picked out.

In a world full of boring black dresses, I?m glad that Gabrielle Union came out to the CFDA Awards looking like Foxy Brown, if Foxy Brown was the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Gabrielle brought her husband Dwayne Wade to the CFDAs, and while they posed together for some photos, she also made him wait by the side so she could be photographed solo in this Rodarte ensemble. I love the pants and the sequined coat. I dislike – but accept – the blouse. And her hair is amazing. She?s elevating this look because you can really tell that she loves it too.
Nicole Kidman in Oscar de la Renta. This is bad, right? I?m not just imagining that? Like, everything is wrong. Wrong hair. Wrong jewelry. Bad dress.
Priyanka Chopra in Michael Kors. This is a decent dress, albeit rather boring. Now I know how my mom feels when she sees me dressed in black – with Priyanka?s coloring, she really should wear more bright and light colors. Damn it, my mom has been right this whole time!
Joan Smalls also wore Michael Kors. Why did Kors put all of the women of color in black?? What are you trying to say?!? Anyway, this is an okay dress. Eh.

The controversy and general discomfort about and around Nate Parker has cooled off in the past few weeks. He managed to get through TIFF with few incidents, and last night?s LA premiere of The Birth of a Nation was pretty straight-forward too. According to Deadline, there were no protesters and attendees generally wanted to see the film, regardless of Parker?s controversies.
It doesn?t seem like Parker was doing many red carpet interviews, but he did walk the carpet. I?m also including photos of Gabrielle Union, Armie Hammer and his wife, and Chadwick Boseman (who is not in the film, but came out to support the film). In lieu of any interviews with Parker, I did want to repost the link to this fantastic new Gabrielle Union interview, which I included in the links yesterday. Gabrielle spoke to xoNeCole in what turned out to be a far-ranging interview about white privilege, being a rape survivor, race and more ? go here to read the full piece. There?s one part getting a lot of attention, and it?s a pretty great part. Union is discussing privilege and how she would like to challenge her white colleagues to recognize their privilege, and how they are able to operate within the industry in a completely different way from black artists. Union named names.
The reason why most people aren?t willing to go the extra mile to really have equality is because it won?t benefit them. Most people are self-serving, which is human nature so you have to fight back against that. In order to begin to see change start to occur, we have to be willing to have conversations with people who have different opinions than us. I?ve already talked to Lena Dunham; I would love to talk to Kate Upton and Amy Schumer. Maybe I can help to explain the oppressive systems that have benefited and allowed them to say these careless, insensitive and offensive things. Those conversations are awkward as f–k and they get heated. Similar to watching people have conversations about consent.
[From xoNeCole]
LOL. I would have loved to have heard the conversation between Lena Dunham and Gabrielle Union. If Lena was smart (??) she would have just listened and not spoken. But yes, I am here for Gabrielle Union calling Amy Schumer and Kate Upton ?careless, insensitive and offensive.? Gabby has said no lies.

| Gabrielle Union wrote an op-ed about Nate Parker, rape, consent & education | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
Over the course of a month, the Nate Parker story blew up. Literally nothing he said could make the situation more palatable. Parker was charged and put on trial for rape in 1999. The details of the case were always public record, but following the Sundance premiere of Parker?s film, The Birth of a Nation, the studio hoped to put Parker front and center of an Oscar campaign. And that meant putting Parker front and center for press availability ahead of official release of the film. Every interview Parker has given in the past month has made the situation worse. In fact, I would argue that with each interview, Parker has gotten progressively worse. The last interview was the one he did with Ebony more than a week ago. It was profoundly disturbing.
Throughout the past month, some wondered if the cast of The Birth of a Nation would say anything about Parker publicly. Some even name-checked Gabrielle Union, who plays a small but significant role in the film – her character?s rape is used as a the catalyst for Nat Turner?s Rebellion, even though many historians take issue with that idea entirely. Union has spoken publicly before about how she was raped when she was a teenager, and it made me uncomfortable to think that people were like ?Gabby needs to speak about this.? She might not have even known, and even if she did, let?s keep our eye on the ball: Parker is the bad guy here, not the actors in the cast. We shouldn’t re-victimize a rape survivor just because of her proximity to an accused rapist.
In any case, Union has finally spoken out. She wrote an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, which you can read in its entirety here. She writes about her own rape, how ?rape is a wound that throbs long after it heals.? How she has been ?in a state of stomach-churning confusion? since she learned more about Parker?s past. How black women in particular are voiceless in discussions about sexual assault, consent and more. Then she counters with what is basically an argument for what she is doing personally, and how she will approach the conversations around this film:
As important and ground-breaking as this film is, I cannot take these allegations lightly. On that night, 17-odd years ago, did Nate have his date?s consent? It?s very possible he thought he did. Yet by his own admission he did not have verbal affirmation; and even if she never said ?no,? silence certainly does not equal ?yes.? Although it?s often difficult to read and understand body language, the fact that some individuals interpret the absence of a ?no? as a ?yes? is problematic at least, criminal at worst. That?s why education on this issue is so vital.
As a black woman raising brilliant, handsome, talented young black men, I am cognizant of my responsibility to them and their future. My husband and I stress the importance of their having to walk an even straighter line than their white counterparts. A lesson that is heartbreaking and infuriating, but mandatory in the world we live in. We have spent countless hours focused on manners, education, the perils of drugs. We teach them about stranger-danger and making good choices. But recently I?ve become aware that we must speak to our children about boundaries between the sexes. And what it means to not be a danger to someone else. To that end, we are making an effort to teach our sons about affirmative consent. We explain that the onus is on them to explicitly ask if their partner consents. And we tell them that a shrug or a smile or a sigh won?t suffice. They have to hear ?yes.?
Regardless of what I think may have happened that night 17 years ago, after reading all 700 pages of the trial transcript, I still don?t actually know. Nor does anyone who was not in that room. But I believe that the film is an opportunity to inform and educate so that these situations cease to occur on college campuses, in dorm rooms, in fraternities, in apartments or anywhere else young people get together to socialize.
I took this part in this film to talk about sexual violence. To talk about this stain that lives on in our psyches. I know these conversations are uncomfortable and difficult and painful. But they are necessary. Addressing misogyny, toxic masculinity, and rape culture is necessary. Addressing what should and should not be deemed consent is necessary. Think of all the victims who, like my character, are silent. The girls sitting in their dorm rooms, scared to speak up. The wife who is abused by her husband. The woman attacked in an alley. The child molested. Countless souls broken from trans-violence attacks. It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real. Sexual violence happens more often than anyone can imagine. And if the stories around this film do not prove and emphasize this, then I don?t know what does.
It is my hope that we can use this as an opportunity to look within. To open up the conversation. To reach out to organizations which are working hard to prevent these kinds of crimes. And to support its victims. To donate time or money. To play an active role in creating a ripple that will change the ingrained misogyny that permeates our culture. And to eventually wipe the stain clean.
[From LAT]
I think Union is walking a fine line here, mostly because she?s proud of her work in the film and she genuinely wants to be part of a larger dialogue about sexual violence and rape. She?s very clearly giving Parker the benefit of the doubt, regardless of his own admissions and problematic statements. Would it be satisfying to see Union break professional ties with Parker publicly? Sure. But were people really expecting her to? She?s not acting as an apologist for him or for rapists in general, she?s just using this moment to draw attention to the larger conversation. The problem is that it won?t work. Because as soon as Parker opens his mouth again, that will be the story.
