Having bounced back after checking into a wellness center for Bipolar II Disorder treatment earlier this year, Catherine Zeta Jones looked fabulous as she partook in the 2011 Tony Awards in New York City on Sunday night (June 12).
The Welsh actress was the picture of elegance as she arrived at the Beacon Theatre venue clad in a breathtaking red frock to tend to her duties as a guest presenter.
After mingling with fellow stars including U2's Bono and Best Actress in a Leading Role winner Frances McDormand in the backstage area, Catherine patiently waited her turn before taking the stage near show's end to hand out the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical trophy to Norbert Leo Butz for his work in "Catch Me If You Can".
Miss Zeta Jones made the return trip to NYC for the Tony Awards, as she's been situated in Miami, Florida as of late to film her latest role in the Adam Shankman directed picture "Rock of Ages".

Having remained mostly out of the public eye ever since her hospital check-in to battle depression, Catherine Zeta Jones was in high spirits as she exited her New York City apartment on Tuesday (May 31).
The Welsh actress was decked out in a colorful ensemble as staffers helped her load a mound of luggage into an awaiting vehicle before setting off for their airport destination.
Miss Zeta Jones' travels come as she's gearing up to take the stage at the upcoming Tony Awards ceremony.
Joining Daniel Radcliffe, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock and Alec Baldwin as a presenter, Catherine can be seen when the annual Broadway tribute is aired on June 12 at 8PM on CBS.

Getting down to business on her new film ?Playing the Field,? Catherine Zeta-Jones was spotted hard at work in Shreveport, Louisiana today (April 20).
The ?Entrapment? actress looked to be in good spirits as she filmed scenes, especially given her recent skirmish with bipolar II disorder.
?Playing the Field? is about a former professional athlete with a weak past who tries to redeem himself by coaching his son?s soccer team, only to find himself unable to resist when in scoring position with his players? restless and gorgeous moms.
And it sounds like Catherine has quite the cast surrounding her - Gerard Butler, Dennis Quaid, Jessica Biel, and Uma Thurman all star as well.
On a sidenote, the sighting comes amidst reports telling that Zeta-Jones is in final negotiations to join the cast of Adam Shankman?s musical "Rock of Ages".
Of the news, director Shankman said, ?It?s like the musical gods just blessed us!?

Catherine Zeta-Jones and her bipolar disorder have taken the cover of this week?s People Magazine. I would imagine that this will likely be one of People?s best-selling issues, not just because big stars “in crisis” always sell, but because Catherine seems to be giving her story exclusively to People, and this cover story includes Catherine?s first interview since the announcement about her disorder. Here?s an excerpt:
When Catherine Zeta-Jones received a recent diagnosis of bipolar II disorder, a mental illness marked by prolonged periods of depression alternating with episodes of mild mania, she didn’t hesitate to step forward with the news.
“This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them,” the actress, 41, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement in this week’s cover story. “If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.”
In early April, the Oscar-winning wife of actor Michael Douglas, 66, and mom to son Dylan, 10, and daughter Carys, 8, checked in to Silver Hill Hospital, a mental-health facility in New Canaan, Conn.
Shaken by Douglas’s battle with throat cancer, Zeta-Jones was privately struggling, a friend says. As Douglas recovered, Zeta-Jones didn’t ? and with her new movie, the romantic comedy Playing the Field, slated to start shooting in Louisiana, the actress realized she needed help in the face of mounting depression.
“The simple things would just seem overwhelming, like going out to dinner,” says the close friend. “There was just a little piece of her chipped away. It was hard to watch because I knew how hard she was trying.”
[From People]
I agree with everything being said here - there are millions of people with bipolar disorders, it?s nothing to be ashamed of, and people should actively seek treatment. What does interest me, on a celebrity-gossip level, is the how, why and ?why now?? of this. Catherine checked herself into a mental health facility a few weeks ago and stayed for less than a week, I believe. I also believe that Catherine wouldn?t have come out and aired her (admittedly private) business if it not for an exclusive scoop that the National Enquirer got last week - only the Enquirer?s story was about Catherine?s problems with drugs and alcohol, which admittedly could have been bipolar-related. While I do think that whatever she?s going through is private, and that she?s taking steps to handle it and be a responsible adult about the situation, I also think that there?s more to the story than what Catherine is handing to People Magazine.

Enjoying a quiet evening together, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas were spotted out for pizza last night (April 14).
The famous couple was spotted dining together at the Pizza Post in Greenwich, Connecticut where the locals were happy to see them.
According to an eyewitness, ?They seemed great. They looked very happy together,? which is fabulous to hear considering the year they?ve had.
Earlier this week, Catherine was said to be receiving treatment for her Bipolar II Disorder, and Michael recently won his battle with throat cancer.

As a rule, beautiful women are almost always bat-shit fucking crazy. Case in point: Catherine Zeta-Jones, who just voluntarily institutionalized herself in a psych ward for treatment for a “mental health issue.” People Magazine says:
“After dealing with the stress of [husband Michael Douglas' cancer diagnosis] this past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder. She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”
Zeta-Jones, 41, spent about five days in the unidentified facility.
Sorry, she’s not bi-polar; she’s bi-winning. It says so right there on Charlie Sheen’s t-shirt. Unlike beautiful women, T-shirts never lie!

Yesterday, many of us were stunned at the news that Catherine Zeta Jones is bipolar, and that she was being treated for the disorder at a mental health clinic. I said yesterday that I hadn?t heard a whiff of anything regarding Zeta, but some of you reminded me that I had, in fact, heard a few stories. Nothing too bad, and nothing that I didn?t explain away at the time as simple ?Oh, she?s on vacation? or ?She must be tired.? But yes, over the past year, we?ve had lots of photos of Catherine chain-smoking and looking pretty drunk and out-of-it, and yes, looking back on some of the stories of her being ?tired? and ?out of it? were probably bipolar-related. Anyway, People Magazine - who broke the story - has another article up about Zeta and Michael:
Walking the red carpet at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art this week, Michael Douglas was feeling grateful for all the well wishes he’d received from friends and fans as he battled cancer.
“I feel great!” the actor, 66, told PEOPLE at Tuesday night’s event to celebrate Carnegie Hall?s 120th anniversary. “I feel a tremendous amount of support from so many people.”
Absent from the event was his biggest supporter: wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. Hours later, it was revealed that she has quietly sought healing of her own. Her rep says the actress recently checked into a facility for a few days to treat her bipolar II disorder.
The revelation was surprising to many, not least because the Oscar-winning actress and mom-of-two stayed steadfastly positive in public while sticking by Douglas’s side through a grueling six-month battle with cancer.
But behind the scenes, those close to the actress say she felt the strain. Her rep acknowledged the timing of Zeta-Jones, 41, seeking treatment was in part connected to “the stress of the past year.”
Adds a friend, “Catherine has had to deal with Michael’s illness, and that’s been hard.”
A Famous Example
In sharing her experience, the actress put a very public face on a mental illness experienced by millions. The key indicator of bipolar II, experts say, is a cycle of high and low moods, often with episodes of depression.
Zeta-Jones herself has described her bouts with melancholy, telling The Sunday Times in the U.K. that “I’m lucky. ? But that’s not to say I don’t get down on myself. I try and stay positive, being negative isn’t good for my personality. I don’t just bring myself down, I bring everyone around me down. It’s like a dark cloud, ‘Uh oh, here we go’, and I have to snap out of it.”
Dr. David Miklowitz, professor of psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine, says stress “definitely can play a role” in triggering depression or what doctors call hypomania, short periods of mild manias.
?Certain life events, changes, particularly those that affect the sleep cycle, can trigger symptoms,” says Miklowitz. “An event like a loss experience or family conflict can be a cause or a trigger of bipolar episodes.”
Carrie Fisher
Another celebrity knows the feeling. Carrie Fisher, who has laid bare own battles with weight, drugs and alcohol, and also revealed that several years ago she was diagnosed with bipolar II, has described the challenges of the mood swings that come with it.
“A manic phase is not predictable,” Fisher has said, according to USA Today. “The last time, I hacked off my hair, got a tattoo, and wanted to convert to Judaism.”
Perhaps most important, though, is that sufferers can ? and many do ? manage the disorder effectively, many times with various medications. Now that she’s checked out of treatment, Zeta-Jones can get back to her everyday life ? being an actress. She has two new movies coming up, including Playing the Field, currently in production in Louisiana with Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel, and Lay the Favorite.
Adds the friend, Zeta-Jones’s decision to seek treatment was a positive step that will allow her to perform at the best of her ability.
“She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and to make sure she’s in top form,” says the friend, “which she is.”
[From People]
Um? Catherine Zeta-Jones is in Playing the Field? With Gerard Butler?!? I?m calling it: Gerard Butler instigated this current breakdown, probably after he and Zeta had some kind of torrid one night stand. My theory is solid. (Except I don’t think they’ve worked together yet, but nevermind!)
A note about the photos on this post and yesterday?s: I swear to God, I?m not trying to be mean, I?m just using some of the most recent photos we have of Catherine. Her eyes take on a different meaning in retrospect.

Shocking news: Catherine Zeta Jones is bipolar. Did anyone else know that? I didn?t. Zeta?s rep just confirmed to People Magazine that CZJ has checked herself into a ?mental health facility? to treat her ?bipolar II disorder?. Apparently, the stress of the past year - with Michael Douglas?s cancer fight and all - triggered something in Catherine:
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has been by husband Michael Douglas’s side during his cancer fight, has sought mental health treatment for herself, her rep says.
“After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder,” the rep says in a statement. “She?s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”
Zeta-Jones, 41, spent about five days in the unidentified facility, a friend tells PEOPLE.
“There’s no question it’s been a stressful year,” the friend says. “Catherine has had deal with Michael’s illness and that’s been hard. She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and wanted to make sure she’s in top form, which she is.”
Douglas, 66, announced in January he was declared free of cancer after what he called a “wild six-month ride” of chemotherapy and radiation for a tumor on his tongue.
[From People]
From a PR standpoint, this is very well executed. The news is stunning because I?m not aware of even a whiff of this kind of thing around Catherine, and it?s not like she?s had any kind of public meltdown or scandals lately or ever. It seems like a situation where Catherine wasn?t doing very well in private, and she and her family simply took time out to acknowledge the problem and help her get treatment. In other words, everyone is behaving in everybody?s best interests and Catherine is going to get the best help money can buy, and all will be well. Good for them!

These are newish photos of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas from Friday night. They were headed out for a black-tie affair for The Welsh Society of New York. Because Zeta is Welsh, remember? I forget sometimes, because she just seems to have taken to this image of old-money New York so well. Seriously, though, Michael looks great, and he?s healthy and they?re back to going to events together. Also - do my eyes deceive me, or has Zeta put on some weight, especially in the hip-area? It looks good on her.
Michael Douglas looked amazingly strong and healthy as he and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones stepped out in New York Friday night. Zeta-Jones was the guest of honor at a party held by The Welsh Society Of New York at the Yale Club.
The 41-year-old star was awarded the Hopkins bronze medal for lifetime achievement in film at the St. David’s day event just one week after receiving a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) at Buckingham Palace from Prince Charles.
Catherine flaunted her curves in a glamorous black gown with silver detailing which she paired with a white fur coat.
Proudly supporting her was Michael, 66, who revealed in January he’is in remission for stage four throat cancer after months of intensive treatment. The romantic pair held hands as they left the lavish event.
[From Radar]
41! Hahaha. Sure. She?s 41. God bless. Anyway, Zeta?s award was for her ?worldwide stature in the film and theatre industries, her unstinting pride in Wales, her generosity in support of Welsh causes and her role as an ambassador for Wales in the United States of America.? In her acceptance speech, Catherine said: ?It means a lot to come home with my family and to be honoured in this way - very emotional, rather nervous I must say, and it was worth (it) to have Michael in good health to be able to enjoy it (with me).?
On, and her coat is real fur. Because Zeta will cut you if you say anything about her fur.
