I know that when celebrities appear on talk shows there?s usually a discussion before taping where the guest and host loosely work out the story theyre going to tell. I?m starting to wonder, though, if Irish talk show host Graham Norton specifically asks his guests if they have a good animal story to share. Just last December Jamie Dornan appeared on The Graham Norton Show and talked about kissing a horse despite knowing he was madly allergic. My world has not been the same ever since. Now we have an entry from Jodie Foster. Appearing on the show to promote Nyad and True Detective, Jodie pulled her anecdote from the 1970s vaults, when she was nine years old and filming Napoleon and Samantha. After ?cut? was called on a take, her scene partner, a lion, picked little Jodie up in his mouth and toted her around for a bit until a trainer intervened. The crew meanwhile, had run for the hills with equipment in tow. Holy crap.
During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the actress, 61, revealed to the titular host and his other celebrity guests, which included Olivia Colman, that she experienced the terrifying moment while on the set of the 1972 film Napoleon and Samantha.
In the film, Foster was 9 years old when she starred alongside a young Michael Douglas and Johnny Whitaker. She and Whitaker played kids who go on a journey with their pet lion rather than saying goodbye to it.
Foster recalled three lions being on set: the main lion, a stunt lion and a stand-in lion, the latter of which was the one she had the incident with.
?We finished a take and I was going up the hill and all I remember is I remember seeing his mane come around and then he picked me up sideways, shook me in his mouth and turned me around,? Foster said.
The True Detective: Night Country star continued: ?Every single person on the crew was running in the opposite direction and I?m like sideways watching everybody ? and they took their equipment, too.?
The Silence of the Lambs star retold the event with amusement in her voice, but other guests on stage ? Colman, comedian Wanda Sykes, and Scottish host Lorraine Kelly ? looked on in shock.
?I?m watching everybody leave going, ?What?s happening,?? Foster said, adding that she remembers thinking it was an earthquake because she was shaking.
?The trainer said, ?Drop it? and because the lion was so well-trained, he opened his mouth and dropped me down and I went running,? she said.
But the lion ?came after? Foster, she said, noting he ?put one paw on me and then just waited like ?I go her,?? she said with a laugh.

I know it?s not really the point of this story, but I love that there are two child actors involved, but it?s Michael Douglas who?s described as ?young.? Funny! As for the working lions, if you watch the video clip Jodie actually explains the different functions each one played. The ?main? lion was their regular scene partner, because he was very old and no longer in possession of his teeth. The ?stunt? lion was used for roaring and growling shots, presumably close ups that were filmed away from the children. Then the ?stand-in? lion was employed when the ?main? lion could not be persuaded to move. At all. Which is how Mr. Stand-In got called in for this shot. And boy did he milk his moment! Talk about scene stealing, he tried to run off with the star! I hope it was more Jodie?s clothing that the lion grabbed with his mouth rather than her body, and I also hope there really wasn?t that much of a delay until the trainer told him to ?drop it!? Thank goodness Jodie was OK and is now here to tell this story. But that last bit where the lion lays his paw on Jodie and boasts, ?don?t worry, I?ve got her!? ? no offense to the feline, but that move was total canine good-boy energy.

Jodie Foster is 61 years old and she?s spent more than fifty years in the industry. She?s won two Oscars and she?s raised two sons. She?s currently promoting True Detective: Night Country, where she plays an Alaska cop. People who have gotten early screeners of this True Detective season say that it?s brilliant and Jodie is great in it. She?s also promoting Nyad a little bit that?s the Netflix movie where she plays the coach of Diana Nyad. I?ve always liked Jodie and it feels like she?s more relaxed these days, less guarded and chattier in general. She recently spoke to the Guardian about True Detective, motherhood, working with so many young artists and her informal mentorship of young actors. Some highlights:
What it was like to work with so many younger people on ?True Detective?: ?Well, I?m pretty fun. I mean ? I don?t take anything seriously. I make jokes all the time. And, you know, I?m not an expert? I just know me, I don?t really know anybody else, and even as a director ? I?m not really an actor?s director, interestingly.?
Working with ?True Detective? director Issa Lopez: ?She has directed four movies, and I?ve been in so many films, and I think that part is sometimes daunting. But we bonded immediately and laughed through everything. I like it when directors tell me what they want and say things like faster, slower. I?m not interested in directors who are like? ? she puts on a whispery, luvvie-ish voice ? ??Here, let me shake you!? She might have to do that with other people, because they?re young or they?ve never acted before. And I would watch her do that with them and ? You?d better not do that with me.?
Her advice to younger people in the industry: ?They need to learn how to relax, how to not think about it so much, how to come up with something that?s theirs. I can help them find that, which is so much more fun than being, with all the pressure behind it, the protagonist of the story.?
She?s trying to mentor Bella Ramsey & other young actors: ?I do a lot of reaching out to young actresses. I?m compelled. Because it was hard growing up.? When she looks at Ramsey, who told British Vogue earlier this year that ?I?m not 100% straight?, does she feel a pang of sympathy for her younger self? ?Yes.? It was so bleak. ?But I had my mom, you know.?
She admires the way Bella Ramsey exists in the world: ?We weren?t free. Because we didn?t have freedom. And hopefully that?s what the vector of authenticity that?s happening offers ? the possibility of real freedom. We had other things that were good. And I would say: I did the best I could for my generation. I was very busy understanding where I fitted in and where I wanted to be in terms of feminism. But my lens wasn?t wide enough. I lived in an incredibly segregated world.?
For all her cheerleading of Gen Z, Foster isn?t above being irritated by them. ?They?re really annoying, especially in the workplace. They?re like, ?Nah, I?m not feeling it today, I?m gonna come in at 10.30am.? Or, like, in emails, I?ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? And they?re like, ?Why would I do that, isn?t that kind of limiting???
Her two sons, who were raised by three women: ?My two don?t like sports. They like to watch movies and sit at home, and they?re really into their female friends. They?re super feminist. And there was a moment with my older one when he was in high school, when, because he was raised by two women ? three women ? it was like he was trying to figure out what it was to be a boy. And he watched television and came to the conclusion, oh, I just need to be an ahole. I understand! I need to be sh-tty to women, and act like I?m a fker. And I was like, no! That?s not what it is to be a man! That?s what our culture has been selling you for all this time.? The phase went on for six months, she says. Did she let it play out? ?Yes, and no. I was like, you won?t be talking to me like that.?

I like this answer: ?I did the best I could for my generation.? I think that?s very true there was a time when the LGBTQ community wanted Jodie to be more public, more vocal about her sexuality and her life and she just refused. It was a generational thing but it was also just about Jodie needing to keep things a certain way to feel safe, which is partly generational and partly about her own experiences. As for what she says about Gen Z? lmao. That?s going to upset some people. She?s not wrong though, just my opinion!

Jodie Foster directed one of my favorite movies of all time, Home for the Holidays. I think Foster is a great director, and her strength is absolutely with human stories, family dramas and performance-driven realism. Foster is not out there, directing Marvel movies or DC Comic movies, although I think if she chose to do those kinds of movies, she would be good at it. But clearly, Jodie Foster is not interested. She told the Radio Times that she actually thinks superhero movies are ruining the film industry.
The superhero genre is dominating the box office, but one Oscar winner thinks they’re having a negative effect on movie audiences across the world. While speaking with Radio Times about directing an episode on the latest season of Black Mirror, Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster addressed the dominance of superhero movies and the studios who push them, likening the trend to “fracking.”
“Going to the movies has become like a theme park,” said Foster. “Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking ? you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. It?s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don?t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes.”
But that doesn’t mean Foster would ever turn a superhero project down herself, as she said she would consider making a film if it had “really complex psychology.”

I kind of agree with her?? I wouldn?t compare it to fracking, and I wouldn?t frame it as ?wreck the earth? though – clearly, there?s still an appetite for smaller films and historical films and that kind of thing with filmgoers. La La Land, Get Out, Moonlight, those are some examples of smaller, ?quirky? films which did well at the box office and proved that there is an appetite for something other than bloated superhero nonsense. Dunkirk had the ?spectacle? of these enormous set pieces, but because it was historical and narrative-driven, it?s not painted with the same brush as Marvel films. So, while I agree with Foster that the business model of superhero films cannot and should not be maintained, I don?t believe that superhero films are completely destroying the industry – it’s more like the studios need to realize that filmgoers still have an appetite for other films too.

Proudly displaying her marriage bling, Jodie Foster stepped out for the first time since her big day.
Finishing up her Thursday (April 24) with an errand-run, the ?Silence of the Lambs? actress sported a wedding band and toted a few groceries down the street in Santa Monica, CA.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Jodie tied the knot with her girlfriend Alexandra Hedison after a one-year courtship.
Before dating Foster, Hedison was linked to Ellen DeGeneres in the early 2000s.

Even though there are probably only a dozen well-known lesbian celebrities, I still get confused sometimes. Jodie Foster had a long-term partner for the better part of two decades. Then they split up, and it was all very hush-hush because Jodie hadn?t even confirmed anything about her sexuality. Until last year?s Golden Globes, which was the weirdest ?coming out? speech I think I?ve ever heard. Anyway, Jodie Foster has a new partner, Alexandra Hedison. Alexandra was also with Ellen DeGeneres before Ellen got with Portia de Rossi. Alexandra and Jodie have apparently been together for less than a year (???) and now they?ve tied the knot!
Congrats to Jodie Foster and her new wife Alexandra Hedison. I can exclusively reveal that the Oscar winner and her photographer girlfriend of almost a year got married this past weekend. A rep for Foster confirms the happy news.
As E! News first reported, the two started dating sometime last summer.
“It’s pretty serious,” a source told us in September. “They’re totally in love.”
Internet chatter about the two began in the summer when the two were photographed together at a technology seminar at Fox Studios in Los Angeles and out to dinner with friends a few days later. Both were at the opening of Alan Cumming’s Macbeth in NYC back about a year ago, but they weren’t photographed together.
Hedison, who dated Ellen DeGeneres for about three years before things ended in 2004, has had her photography shown in New York and Los Angeles. She also has several acting credits, including playing Dylan Moreland on Showtime’s hit lesbian drama series, The L Word, for three seasons.
In accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes last year, Foster thanked her ex Cydney Bernard, spoke of her need for privacy and also declared that she did her “coming out a thousands years ago, in the Stone Age.”
Foster and Bernard, who are coparents to sons Charles and Kit, called it quits after 20 years in 2008.

You?ve got to wonder: Jodie was with Cydney for 20 years and there was no ring? And then Alexandra swoops in and she?s got the ring in less than a year? I ain?t saying she a golddigger. But I am saying she?s like THE trophy wife/girlfriend to the most powerful lesbians in Hollywood. Anyway, congrats to Alexandra and Jodie. I hope their wedding was lovely and I hope they will be very, very happy together.

Jodie Foster accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for LifetimeAchievementat the Golden Globes last night and came out to everyone during her acceptance speech. Jodie Foster is gay? Shocking, just, shocking. Though that wasn’t the biggest news of the night. It was that everyone thought she was retiring from acting which she isn’t.“I could never stop acting. You’d have to drag me behind, like, a team of horses,” the Silence of the Lambs star insisted. “No, I’m not retiring from acting. And, you know, I’d like to be directing tomorrow . . . I’m actually more into it than I have ever been.” Foster, who has been acting since she was a toddler, explained that the point of her speech was “that people change. Change is important. And, you know, hopefully I’ll be doing different things than I did when I was three years old and six years old and ten years old and 20 years old . . . My work is evolving.”Us WeeklyAnyway, the point of Jodie’s speech was less a coming out and more of a rally for privacy for celebrities. Granted, that’s not going to happen. You can’t expect to make millions and not have people curious as to why they and everyone else are giving you these millions.

Jodie Foster looked absolutely spectacular at the Golden Globes last night while in attendance to accept the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award. Can I say that she looked “divine” without sounding too try-hard? Because Jodie was divine last night. I know her career has been on the downswing lately, but she’s enjoyed such a long period (several decades, in fact) of enduring success, and her confidence last night really shone through on the red carpet. Oh, and Jodie may be 50 years old but looks at least a decade younger, don’t you think? And it’s so obvious that she hasn’t become a plastic surgery victim to get there. Of course, Jodie has done the requisite nose job (when she was much younger) and probably touched up with a little bit of Botox in the forehead area for last night’s event, but she looks very real, which is a major accomplishment in Hollywood.
Jodie wore a beautiful blue Giorgio Armani gown that bucked today’s fleeting trends in favor of old-school glamour. She chose a dress with just the right amount of shimmer and cling, and the straps gave the gown a very age-appropriate air. With her trademarked cute little bob and understated makeup, Jodie knew she was in charge of her look last night. I might have gone a little bit more adventurous with the lipstick, but I can’t really complain too much here.
Jodie’s speech was a whole lot of things rolled into one — candid, emotional, and a little bit awkward too. After she started to talk about her “big announcement,” Jodie seemed to backtrack on her original script a bit. I think we all expected her to make a “loud and proud” announcement about her orientation (?), but then she made a joke out of the moment by simply stating, “I am single.” Then she went on to make a point about privacy and how “I am not Honey Boo Boo Child.” I see what she’s saying here, and Jodie has spoken before on the topic of privacy in terms of the Kristen Stewart scandal. Jodie is perfectly entitled to say whatever she wants in her Cecil B. DeMille speech. God knows she’s earned it. Jodie also went on to utter some amazing, emotional lines about her mother, and then she made an allusion to a new chapter, which I suspect means life behind the camera. Here’s a clip.
Jodie’s speech was offbeat and kind of amazing in a stream-of-consciousness sort of way. I suspect that she scripted it that way on purpose. If only she hadn’t mucked up the occasion with all of that Mel Gibson talk. I know Jodie prides herself on being one of Mel’s only (or even possibly his lone) supporter, but this friendship and working relationship only taints her otherwise illustrious career. In response, Mel let out a wolf whistle. Ugh.
Now back to THAT SMILE.

These are new photos of Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly at the NY Film Festival premiere of Carnage. I suspect that Jodie is wearing Armani, just because she almost always wears Armani for red carpet situations. I don?t love the dress, or the shoes, but I really like her haircut. She?s still a very beautiful woman, and I buy that she?s un-tweaked too.
Enough of the superficial stuff! For whatever reason, Jodie Foster has just gone completely and totally crazy this year with her career choices. Earlier this year, she was out and about, promoting the hell out of The Beaver, that dumb film she did with Mel Gibson. She not only agreed to work with her spiritual soulmate Mel, actor-to-actor, she DIRECTED the p.o.s. too. And then for her follow-up to Bad Career Choices 101, she worked with Roman Polanski, who directed Carnage, the film adaptation of the play, God of Carnage. To be fair to Jodie, other actors made the bad decision to work with Polanski - John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, and of course, Kate Winslet (who looks like the over-wrought, bad-accented weak link in the trailer).
So why does Jodie get so much grief? I think it?s because she?s so vocal in her support of Mel AND Polanski. Where many prominent actors work with Roman Polanski, they rarely try to publicly defend him, and perhaps it can be easily explained as a one-time mistake in judgment, or an actor just having blinders on regarding Polanski?s considerable talent as a director versus how sucky and terrible he is as a person. You can?t explain it away with Jodie, because she just seems to have consistently horrible taste in men. Plus, the fact that The Beaver and Carnage have come out within months of each other probably doesn?t help her either.
Sigh? at least her hair is cute.

Continuing to promote his new film, Mel Gibson was spotted at the Australians in Film screening of ?The Beaver? in Los Angeles last night (June 1).
The ?Lethal Weapon? actor was joined by his pal (and the film?s director) Jodie Foster as he posed for the paparazzi outside the Harmony Gold Theater.
In real estate news, Mel has dropped the price of his Lavender Hill Farm by a cool million dollars.
Gibson originally priced the property at $12.75 million but has now reduced it to $11.75 million in hopes of someone taking it off his hands.

They?ve been hamming it up all over Cannes for their new film ?The Beaver? and this morning (May 18) Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster attended a photo call together.
The ?Lethal Weapon? star and the ?Silence of the Lambs? babe showed up at the Palais des Festivals to greet fans and press as part of the 64th Cannes International Film Festival festivities.
Earlier in the week, Jodie informed a press conference that Gibson, who has been plagued with personal problems, would indeed show up for the premiere.
She noted, ?He will be here. He won?t be talking, but he will be here.? When asked about Gibson?s violent outbursts from last year, she commented, "I can't excuse Mel's behavior. Only he can explain that, but I do know the friend that I know, who's been a friend for many, many years. As a friend, he is kind and loyal and thoughtful."
