Keri Russell is promoting The Diplomat Season 2, which comes out just days before the presidential election. Keri covers the latest issue of Variety, and she talks about the election and the real-world politics of The Diplomat, as in? what does the international political and diplomatic world look like post-Trump? It?s barely acknowledged here in America, that four years of Trumpism severely strained our alliances with many countries. Keri plays a career diplomat unexpectedly tasked with becoming America?s ambassador to the UK. Shenanigans ensue. Some highlights from Variety:
Keri on whether she?ll endorse Kamala Harris: ?If I had my wish, I would be invisible ? that?s who I am. I would give all the money in the world, but I would be invisible. Someone like George Clooney, he?s at an age, he should swing and swing hard.? And Taylor Swift? ?Oh, fking swing and swing big. She should absolutely be doing everything she?s doing. But nobody cares about me. I just want to be hidden in my little cave. But I will give, I mean, yes. And I?ve listened to every Ezra Klein podcast about her ? you know what I mean? I don?t think I?m gonna sway it one way or the other; I have no social media. But the heavy hitters should stand their ground. Listen, if someone asks me directly, I?m not gonna lie. I do think that Kamala will win.?
She doesn?t like playing girly, pretty characters: ?A gift about that show, and a little bit ?The Diplomat? too, is I got to wear these big baggy sweaters, and I hardly wore any makeup. I would watch the girls who were, like, the guest stars ? the beautiful girls who would come on and have to wear girl clothes? ? and I see how nervous that makes them. It?s hard to be beautiful; it?s much easier just to be in a big baggy sweatshirt and sneakers. Don?t get me wrong, I love the beauty of women, too, and I like dressing up, and I like, you know, wearing makeup when I need to. But there?s so much more to being a girl than that. And I think some girls get stuck in that, you know? It was such a gift to just get to wear big baggy sweaters and just get to be funny or smart. So I was less nervous.?
Divorcing her first husband Shane Deary & falling for Matthew Rhys: She has a son, River, now 17, and a daughter, Willa, 12 ? with her then-husband, Brooklyn contractor Shane Deary. They separated in 2013, and Russell and Rhys fell in love that same year while shooting the show?s first season ? she gave birth to their son, Sam, now 8, between its fourth and fifth seasons.
?I was in love with Matthew. We were, like, hot and heavy in love, shooting the spy stuff at night in disguises and wigs. I mean, it was such a fun, sexy time. So fun, oh my gosh.?
Deciding to do ?The Diplomat? & forcing Matthew to step up as a hands-on father: ?I have done the birthday cupcakes,? she told him. ?I have done the doctor?s appointments and the scary nights and the washing laundry. And I have been there. I?ve done the back rubs, but I want three months ? or a fking year! ? where I don?t. It?s someone else?s turn ? pick up the slack.? And he did. And it was hard. You know, Matthew was shooting at the time, too, and I?m sure that was hard, because he was trying to fly back and forth. And I was like, ?Yeah, it?s hard ? it?s called being a mom.??

Keri really is so private and low-key that she never had to face down the would-be scandal of her first marriage ending because she had fallen in love with her costar. Like, it wasn?t even a blip in the gossip media. The thing about Keri telling Matthew to step up is really good too, because yes, he should be doing more and she wanted to do this amazing series. Men need to step up and be supportive partners, but it?s like pulling teeth most of the time.

Last night The Americans won Best TV Drama Series! For such an incredible show it sure took long enough, its sixth and final season, for it to be recognized. It wasnt even nominated in the category until last year, which is a crime, and it lost at The Emmys to Game of Thrones. So Im happy The Americans is getting acknowledgement. Its a slow burn for sure and it took me a while to get into it, but its so worth it.
As for fashion, star Keri Russell was in this silver sequin Monique Lhuillier with a plunging v-neck and a floor length skirt. The top of this dress makes it look like shes slouching. I would slouch in that gown as I wouldnt trust it. Theres something off about the shoulders too. I like a good retro shoulder pad but the bodice is all wrong. Shes lovely though and Im so happy for her and her partner, Matthew Rhys. Plus all the talented cast and crew on this show. Especially the costume designers!
Heres a cute photo of Keri carrying her Louboutins while getting out of limo to go to the WME Golden Globe Party. Now I dont even care if I ever own a pair of those bloody shoes. I guess those high end designer shoes are typically uncomfortable.
Presenter Kaley Cuoco had on a very cute white and navy Monique Lhuillier gown featuring a velvet strapless top and white structured full skirt with pockets. The black bow at the waist fit perfectly and gave the dress a holiday vibe. She kept sticking her hands in the pockets and it was cute. She looked so good! I really liked her hair, it looked so sleek like that. Her arms are goals.
Linda Cardellini was also in Monique Lhuillier. More women wore that designer than any other, which is rare as Christian Siriano usually takes that honor. Her black chiffon and sequin dress is just ok. Weve seen that same silhouette, the asymmetric side draped top with the keyhole neckline, on so many gowns. Linda starred in Green Book, the white savior movie which won Best Comedy or Musical for some reason. I really hope thats the only award it gets this season apart from some technical ones.
Last night there was a weird bit where doctors in white lab coats came out giving flu shots. There was no real reason for it and the flu shots must have been fake, but Linda was game. A lot of celebrities said no, which would be my default response to random people doing that, and I usually get a flu shot. What if you already had one that season? Heres that

It took me years to get into The Americans, but once I did I couldnt stop. That show will pull you in, it will make you mad and its a commitment. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are absolutely amazing. The series and both of its leads have been snubbed in all but the secondary acting categories up until this year. For this, its final and sixth season, The Americans took home Writing for a Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Drama, for Matthew Rhys. Rhyss partner on screen and off, Keri Russell, did not get Lead Actress, that went to Claire Foy. (Sidenote: Vera Farmiga absolutely should have been nominated for Bates Motel.) During his speech Rhys joked that Keri told him he better not propose, then the camera panned to her and her reaction was priceless.

I’m going to talk about this season of The Americans in this paragraph and there may be mild spoilers. I’ll try to stay vague but you may find this spoilery, so if you’re waiting to see this season’s finale (or this season in general) you may want to skip over this paragraph. Many people found this season too slow, just judging by the comments I saw on social media. I liked it a lot and found it just as interesting as every other season but I disliked the focus on Pastor Tim (why does anyone care about him? He’s awful) and annoying Paige and was hoping to see more of Martha in Russia and especially Burov. The season finale needed more Burov. I was really hoping Martha and Burov would at least meet, although I know that would be a stretch unless the Center arranged it. (Remember when they were both in the same grocery store? Why can’t she speak in his general vicinity and he hears her accent and helps her?) Also, can we please see more of that hot scientist in Kansas (Brett Tucker!) that Elizabeth was seeing?
If anything The Americans is unpredictable and cinematic and absolutely deserving of all the Emmys. So far it’s received only two, both for Margo Martindale for guest actress. So The Americans had an Emmy “for your consideration” party, I know because our friends at GoFugYourself covered it, and I agree with them that in no way should The Americans have to ask for Emmy consideration after its been consistently amazing for five seasons. At least it’s finally nominated in the outstanding drama category this year, and also for outstanding leads. Fingers crossed that the show is finally recognized.
Star Keri Russel was at a charity event, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, where she talked about how she gets weepy doing charity work. She attributes that to being a mom but I’m not so sure about that. She has two sons from her first husband, son River, 10, and daughter Willa, 6, and she also has a one year-old baby son, Sam, with her current partner, costar Matthew Rhys. Here is Keri Russell stepping out for the 70th Annual Tony Awards ceremony held at New York City’s Beacon Theatre shortly after giving birth.
The Americans star opted for a dark red gown with a plunging neckline and silver accents. She completed her look with a matching clutch, heels and Jacob & Co. triple drop earrings.
That’s the most amount of cleavage I’ve ever seen on her. Was always a fan of her ass, though.

Keri Russell was at the Tony Awards last night to present Waitress, a musical based on the film of the same name, in which she starred in 2007. Keri just had a baby, with her Americans costar Matthew Rhys, a couple of weeks ago. She was in a red low-cut Monique Lhuillier gown with cutouts along the back, buttons down the front, gathered sleeves and some kind of silver leaf-like pattern along the top. To be fair to Keri, this dress may have been a last minute choice in honor of the victims in Orlando, for which people were wearing silver ribbons. So she picked a dress with silver applique. It’s not her best look.
Busy Philipps was also in Monique Lhuillier, she went as her bestie Michelle Williams’s plus one. Busy was in a strapless Pink gown with a mod floral pattern. She was carrying a Jane Eyre clutch by Olympia Le-Tan, which she already owned. This dress isn’t bad, it’s a good choice for the event.
Karolina Kurkova was in a black formfitting Coach dress with a gold and black jacket over it. I looked through their ready-to-wear jackets and there’s nothing quite like this one, not that I would want to own it or anything. It’s very Grease. Coach does have a military insignia jacket, but nothing with this diamond pattern. I think it was custom made with the silver ribbon motif.
Tavi Gevinson was also in Coach, in this somewhat shocking mix of patterns. Tavi is in The Crucible. This look is very similar to the Coach Christina Ricci wore to the CFDA Awards, however Christina had this same blouse and a-line skirt in all black with some gold piping. This looks like the 70s and 90s got drunk and had a fight.

Well, congrats to them. While I never got into The Americans, CB has recently started binge-watching it and she really enjoys it. I hear good things about the show all the time and maybe I?ll give it another chance at some point. I?ve always thought Rhys was really attractive in a low-key way, and Keri has that girl-next-door vibe that a lot of men love. And now they?ll have a baby! A half-Welsh, half-American baby. I wonder if they?ll put her pregnancy into the show?
