Dakota Johnson has an interesting interview with Bustle, and my first thought was ?wow, quick turnaround from Madame Web bombing at the box office.? While she does get into the Madame Web catastrophe, the point of this interview is Dakota promoting her production company and her new book club, TeaTime Book Club. It?s yet another side-gig for Dakota, and it feels like she?s trying to go for the Reese Witherspoon route of starting a production company and book club to find properties to buy and produce. Dakota is not online and she would rather be sitting in her beach house reading a good book or spending time with artists and her family. Some highlights from this Bustle piece:
She?s a beach person: ?I live way out by the beach, out in Malibu. I need to be in nature. I can be out at my house and not see or speak to another human for days on end, and I feel wonderful.?
Her book club is different: ?There are a lot of people who do things like I do and they have book clubs, and I was always like, Oh, the way that I read books, it?s so different. I want to fall down the rabbit hole every time I read? to invest in the book, invest in the language, invest in the references. Like, Oh, what is that piece of art she?s talking about? Who?s that musician?? I?ve found in book clubs that you?re just kind of on your own. You watch someone like me have a conversation with the author, but I don?t feel invested in that.?
Press tours are ridiculous: ?Publicly? all that stuff is ridiculous. It?s hard for me to fake it. It?s hard for me sometimes to go along with the silliness of doing a press tour. I had the LA premiere for Madame Web and then went to Mexico City. I had pneumonia and was on steroids and the nebulizer and doing all these little things, and I was really, really sick and felt horrible. I looked horrible. I was like, Ugh. And then the movie came out and it was? Like, I can?t take any of it seriously at all. I dunno.
The critical reaction to Madame Web: ?Unfortunately, I?m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has. It?s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made ? and it?s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what?s really freaking me out ? decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it?s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they?re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t. Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren?t going to f*cking want to see those.
Her thoughts now that ?Madame Web? is over: ?It was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don?t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it?s one thing and then as you?re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you?re like, Wait, what? But it was a real learning experience, and of course it?s not nice to be a part of something that?s ripped to shreds, but I can?t say that I don?t understand.
On the Puriteens questioning the need for sex scenes in movies: ?I feel like people get up in arms about things just to be up in arms about things. This culture of hating ? it?s so boring. Because you know those people who are like, ?Why is there a sex scene in it?,? are going to go home and watch p0rn. If there?s a sex scene that feels gratuitous and out of context, then yeah, say that. But if it?s part of the story and it makes sense, what are you going to say? It?s also like, can everyone just f*cking relax and stop judging each other so hard? Everyone?s doing their best. I mean some people are not. Some people are really doing their absolute worst and we see you.
Being in love with a musician: ?I love me a musician. I think it?s talent. I think it?s the way that they see the world. But I think it really depends on the musician. I?ve known some sh-tty ones. I love watching [Chris Martin on stage]. I could watch him every day. I don?t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don?t know I?m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing. When people are really good at things, it is [sexy.] Except being a dictator.
She refers to Chris?s kids as her stepkids: ?I think as long as you?re not hurting anyone physically, emotionally, psychologically, do you. I like that people are exploring existence and how to relate to other people. My stepson had a friend who was saying that at her school, some kids are identifying as cats. And I was like, OK, good for you.
Being a stepmom: ?I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.?
She loves to lie in interviews: ?The most fun. The most fun. Sometimes when you?re in a ridiculous situation, you just have to be ridiculous.

I was prepared to hate on her Madame Web answers, but she handled that really well. She telegraphed all of that during the publicity tour as well, that the thing she signed up for was not the thing which was made. Too many cooks in the kitchen, too many executives putting their two cents in, etc. Some of MW?s failure will fall on Dakota?s shoulders, but she won?t own it solely. A lot of people made a lot of bad decisions.
As for the rest of it? it?s interesting that she refers to Chris?s kids as her stepkids! We?ve known for a while that Dakota and Gwyneth are fine with each other, and Dakota and Apple Martin have been photographed together too. I can?t imagine what it?s like to navigate all of that. I also wonder if Chris will be mad that Dakota talked about him in an interview. She usually avoids all of that.

Here are some photos from the LA premiere of Madame Web. I?ve been waiting to see if they would do any big American premieres, and I guess this is all we?re getting, especially since the film comes out tomorrow. Don?t ask me to explain the structure or backstory of these characters, all I know is that Dakota Johnson plays Madame Web, a paramedic-turned-psychic crime fighter. Sydney Sweeney, Celeste OConnor and Isabela Merced play her friends/helpers and I think they have some special skills too. Sydney took this role just before she really blew up, and I kind of wonder if she regrets not holding out for something bigger from Marvel.
Fashion-wise, these ladies are MESSY. Dakota is repping her Gucci contract and this is not a serve. I get that she wanted something ?webbed? but I think she should have insisted that Gucci fully line the dress and not just give her a thonged bodysuit. Sydney?s Oscar de la Renta gown is much more suitable and spider-webby. Celeste O?Connor wore Gert-Johan Coetzee and Isabela Merced wore Versace. Bonus photo of Emma Roberts with very bad hair.

I missed posting these photos from last weekend?s Brazilian premiere of Madame Web. Dakota Johnson apparently flew down solo to do a premiere event in Rio. She wore a custom ?spider web? dress from Annie?s Ibiza, and the craftsmanship of the dress is very pretty. That being said, I mean? Zendaya did it better when she was promoting Spider-Man, all of those years ago.
Anyway, Dakota is obviously all over the news and gossip for her Madame Web promotion. She?s talking about how people shouldn?t call her a nepo baby! She?s talking about how she doesn?t understand the one meme from the film, the ?he was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died? line. She?s also talking about one of her rare TV roles, when she appeared in The Office?s finale.
Dakota Johnson hilariously reminisced with Seth Meyers on ?Late Night? about their appearances on the ?The Office? series finale, which aired on NBC in May 2013. Johnson, who was still years out at the time from her breakthrough in the ?Fifty Shades? franchise, appeared as a new accountant named Dakota. Meyers, meanwhile, was seen on a television doing a fictional version of ?Weekend Update? from ?Saturday Night Live.? Johnson was a big fan of ?The Office,? so she jumped at the chance to be a guest star on the last episode.
?That was honestly the worst time of my life,? Johnson quipped. ?They were like, ?Do you want to be in the series finale?? And I was like, ?Of course,? thinking that I?d show up for like half a day. I was there for two weeks. And I?m barely in the fking show.?
Asked by Meyers if it was sad being on the set for the last episode, Johnson answered: ?There were weird dynamics that had been going on for the last 10 years. Some people didn?t speak to each other. And I?m coming in like ?So excited to be here!? No one wanted to talk to me. No one gave a fk?I was like in the background of all of these scenes, faxing things.?

I mean, Mindy Kaling has said/indicated as much, that after so long on the air, there were a lot of internal politics in The Office and some beefs and such. Plus, it was the finale! You can?t expect to come in as a new person for the finale and expect them to roll out the red carpet. Anyway, I didn?t expect Dakota to go that hard about her experience but it is what it is. I?m sure The Office fans will be mad at her.

Dakota Johnson is currently promoting Madame Web. There?s been at least one photocall and premiere, although I expect that we?ll get some bigger premieres in the coming days. Dakota recently hosted Saturday Night Live and one of her most successful bits was appearing in a Please Don?t Destroy video where she roasted the three comedians.
The ?nepo truce? thing caught on because, oh right, Dakota is absolutely a nepo baby. She?s a second-generation nepo baby! Her grandmother is Tippi Hendron, her mom is Melanie Griffith and her dad is Don Johnson. Her stepfather, for years, was Antonio Banderas too. Dakota is super-close to her mom, dad, grandmother and even her former stepfather. Which sort of gives her some blind spots to her own nepotism. Dakota appeared on the Today Show this week and she was asked about the Please Don?t Destroy video and nepo babies in general. Dakota shared her own story? of being cut off financially when she decided to become an actress.
Dakota Johnson is not a fan of the nepo baby conversation. Johnson, 34, said that she finds conversations surrounding celebrities whose parents are also celebrities or otherwise influential in the entertainment industry incredibly annoying and boring during an appearance on the Today show Wednesday.
Like, if you?re a journalist, write about something else, she told host Hoda Kotb, who asked Johnson ? whose parents are actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson ? about poking fun at her own celebrity status.
That?s just like, lame. So the opportunity to make fun of it, I jumped at, she added.
Johnson and her father Don, 74, have been open about his decision to cut her off financially when she decided to pursue acting rather than attend college after she graduated high school. He said, ?If you go to college, you?ll still get an allowance, she recalled on the Today show Wednesday. And I was like, ?Well, I?m going to be an actress.? So he was like, ?Alright, well you?re on your own.
Johnson secured her first acting role as an adult in 2010s The Social Network and has seen significant success since, most notably for her starring role in 2015s Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels.
I did some little modeling jobs that helped me pay my rent. And then I started auditioning and got some jobs, she told Kotb of how she survived after her father took her off the payroll, as she says he refers to the familys finances. I definitely had moments where I couldn?t afford groceries and had to ask my mom to help me. She was the nice one.

I?m sure in Dakota?s mind, she is mostly self-made, because she was ?cut off? and she paid her own bills at an early age. But again, nepotism is about more than ?my famous parents made me pay my rent when I was 20!? It?s about more than money. While Don and Melanie didn?t support her financially, they supported her in a million other ways, and as we?ve seen endlessly, Hollywood loves first-gen, second-gen and third-gen nepo babies. Dakota was able to walk into auditions as the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. That gave her an enormous leg up. Its okay to acknowledge it and your own nepo privilege.

Sometimes I still think about Heather Graham claiming that she stayed so youthful because she tries to sleep eleven to twelve hours every night. Recently, I?ve been obsessed with 20-year-old tennis player Holger Rune talking about how he tries to get nine to thirteen hours of sleep every night. These people are bonkers! My body physically would not ?let? me sleep that long every single night, plus I have no desire to spend half the day in bed, asleep. WTF? Well, I?m adding Dakota Johnson to the list of people who regularly sleep for a crazy amount of time.
Dakota Johnson loves her beauty sleep. The Fifty Shades of Grey alum told the Wall Street Journal that if she gets less than 10 hours of sleep a night she cant function properly. She added that she can easily sleep for 14 hours straight.
Sleep is my number one priority in life, the actress, 34, said.
Johnson also explained that she doesnt have a scheduled wake-up time every day. Instead, she plans her sleep routine on a day-by-day basis. If I?m not working, if I have a day off on a Monday, then I will sleep as long as I can, she said.
In addition to getting enough sleep, Johnson said she works out five days a week ? a mix of hot yoga, pilates and body weight training. She also meditates twice every day.
I do transcendental meditation, she continued. I?ve been really into breathwork recently and that?s been helping me a lot with anxiety.

Do these people really not wake up at 3 am and check the clock? Do they not wake up at 5 am and start thinking about all of the sh-t they have to do that day? That?s what I don?t understand if I?m tired, I?ll sleep hard but I?ll still wake up a couple of times and look at the clock and at some point (usually after seven or eight hours of sleep), my body just refuses to go back to sleep. There?s probably a caffeine issue too as in, these are people who are not hopelessly addicted to caffeine to the point that they?ll wake up just to get coffee. The last time I got more than eight hours of sleep a night was probably about a year ago, and I still remember it I got like ten hours of sleep and my whole day was thrown off.
