I honestly don?t know how people can concentrate on regular work and politics when this year?s US Open is pretty exciting. Everyone has their faves, and I understand if Roger Federer?s fans have already left the building (he lost in the fourth round). But it?s still really exciting. Yesterday, Juan Martin del Potro beat John Isner in the day-session quarterfinal. Defending US Open champion Sloane Stephens melted in the heat and humidity and lost in straight sets in her QF. Then the night sessions happened Serena Williams v. Karolina Pliskova, and then Rafael Nadal v. Dominic Thiem. Pliskova beat Serena in the semifinal here at the US Open in 2016. Serena started slow last night, but she ended up beating the pants off Pliskova. It was awesome. And then Nadal v. Thiem was a nearly five-hour, five-set epic that saw Nadal, the defending champion, prevail by a narrow margin.
It?s been interesting to see which celebrities come out. Obviously, Serena is a crowd-favorite in New York (and literally everywhere else) and that?s why she gets the more prestigious night time slots. Spike Lee was there, and he was interviewed on camera mid-match (he compared Serena to Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali). It seems like Joe Jonas was there with his fiancee Sophie Turner, and then Nick Jonas was there with his fiancee Priyanka Chopra. Double-date! The Hadid sisters were in one of the boxes too the Hadids are actually quite close to Serena, which is a friendship that always surprises me a little bit. Ben Stiller, who is some kind of mega-Rafa fan, was in Rafa?s box with his family until 2 am to watch Rada prevail. TENNIS!!

This post is devoted to some of my least favorite gowns at the 2017 Emmys. Shockingly, there weren?t that many dresses where I was like ?OH HONEY NO.? I actually think the Emmys needed more of those WTF-moments, like someone turning up in a ballerina costume or a swan costume. Why not? Those moments are fun. Instead, we get the normal, everyday fugness of high-end designers trying to be avant-garde and failing miserably. Do you know how difficult it is to make Priyanka Chopra look bad? She?s a beautiful woman with a great figure. So of course Balmain made her look like she was wearing a reworked quilt. This fabric is ACTUALLY QUILTED. And then beaded on top of that. NO. Stop it. This is Bad Fashion. Priyanka also had bad, too-harsh makeup too. And don?t even speak to me about the feathers.
Ellie Kemper wore Jenny Packham, a British designer I usually enjoy. It?s not that I think Ellie?s dress is SO bad, it?s just that? of all the Packham dresses she could have chosen, she picked this one? Why? And why is the effect so boring? I also think the navy ?lining? should have gone all the way down.
Allison Janney in Tony Ward. Bridal mess! The thing is, I don?t hate the lace on the skirt, I just think the top half of the gown sucks so hard, it throws the whole look off.
I don?t think Felicity Huffman ever gets it right – I like her, I admire her work, I think she?s incredibly talented, but she never really pulls it off with her fashion. This is Tony Ward too and it looks like a dip-dyed wedding dress (and a cheap one at that).

Priyanka Chopra was one of the more meme-worthy looks from the 2017 Met Gala. Priyanka wore Ralph Lauren and she was the ?big name? in RL (sorry Rose Byrne). I mean? she went big. She went bold. She went for a dress that will be a big conversation. And if the theme was Burberry, I would be all for it. But this is just? not on-theme and not even bold enough. I did enjoy all of the Inspector Gadget jokes though. PS? Nick Jonas wore Ralph Lauren too, that?s why Priyanka and Nick posed together on the red carpet.
Rose Byrne wore Ralph Lauren, only this does not look like any RL gown that I?ve ever seen. It?s SO unflattering. Do you know how difficult it is to make an unflattering gown for Rose Byrne?? She?s pretty, she?s got a great figure, she can pull off almost anything. But this sucks. I think she was trying to go big and do an interpretation on the theme, but it just doesn?t work.

Michael B. Jordan was another dude in Ralph Lauren. I love this. I love that MBJ comes to these fashion events. I love that he cares about his style and that he cares enough to go to the Met Gala and network and all of that. He?s amazing.

Priyanka Chopra was one of the many women in white last night but she went with a modern silhouette, which was rare. She was in a Ralph & Russo gown that featured an extremely pointy neckline and looked like it was missing sides which were filled in with that nude ice skater pantyhose fabric. The quilting on this dress looked cool from far away, but up close it’s too much, like it should be limited to one area instead of all over the dress. Something nice: it fits her beautifully and her hair and makeup are pretty. Those bracelets are killer but they look like cuffs or shackles. Not a fan of this look.
Presenter Hailee Steinfeld was also in light-colored Ralph & Russo and I can’t decide which dress I dislike more. Maybe Hailee’s because it’s not risky at all and has so many bad elements. There’s that dippy floral pattern, the scalloped edges and a flourished ribbed back at the neckline, which resembles an angry lizard. This so wants to be feminine and pretty but just throws too much together and the colors are off.
Also, look at her waist area in this side view. The bodice ripped a little!
Everyone was raving about Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho, just 16(!), who performed a flawless version of “How Far I’ll Go.” She even got a flag to the face (she wasn’t “hit in the head” like Huffpo claims, it was just a little fabric brushing her) during her performance and was totally unfazed. I’m super sad that Moana didn’t win anything, I loved that movie and so did my 12 year-old son who typically doesn’t like animated movies anymore, but at least we got to celebrate it. Cravalho was in stapless white Rubin Singer with thin gold lines and I so appreciate the thought and care that went into this gown. There’s a very cool art-deco type patter over it and yet it’s not too busy and works. I love the tulle underlay.
