Emily Ratajkowski has grown on me so much over the past year. While many people still take issue with Emily, her sexuality and her feminism, she?s one of the few young celebrities who have made me stop and think about how I write about feminism and celebrities. Some high points of just the past few months: Emily gave a full-throated defense of Kim Kardashian, and they even seemed to befriend each other. Emily gave a series of interesting interviews about the male gaze, sexuality, feminism and how society treats women who don?t fall into a certain ?good girl? box. Emily covers the new issue of Glamour ? in addition to a short interview, she also wrote an essay about the way society treats women who want to have a voice in any way:
She was criticized online for being political & public: ?After posting a picture of myself at the rally and a video of my speech about Bernie Sanders?s positions on equal pay, maternity leave, and economic inequality, I was trolled heavily. Commenters said I had ?an excess of beauty and lack of brain? and told me to ?shut up and show us your t-ts.? But I was also criticized in a very specific way? for seeking attention. They wrote me off as ?a desperate attention whore,? saying I was taking part in the conversation only because everybody else was too. I realized then that I?ve been called an attention whore so often that I had almost gotten used to it. And as women we are accused of seeking attention more than men are, whether for speaking out politically, as I did, for dressing a certain way, or for even posting a selfie. Our culture has a double standard that runs so deep, many women have actually built up an automatic defense?attempting to be a step ahead of potential critics by making sure we have ?real? reasons for anything we say or do.?
Sexy & opinionated: ?Often it?s men propelling these acts of sexism, but women discount one another too: Think about how many times you?ve heard a woman say about another woman, ?Oh, she?s just doing that for attention.? We?ve internalized this trope. Our society tells women we can?t be, say, sexy and confident and opinionated about politics. This would allow us too much power. Instead our society asks us to declare and defend our motivations, which makes us second-guess them, all while men do what they please without question? The truth is that both groups want to be noticed. Yet we view a man?s desire for attention as a natural instinct; with a woman, we label her a narcissist.?
Genderless motives: ?It?s absurd to think that desire for attention doesn?t drive both women and men. Why are women scrutinized for it more, then? And if a woman dresses up because she does want attention, male or otherwise, does that make her guilty of something? Or less ?serious?? Our society doesn?t question men?s motivations for taking their shirt off, or shaving, or talking about politics?nor should it. Wanting attention is genderless. It?s human.
Attention & victim-blaming: ?In August a young woman, Karina Vetrano, was raped and murdered while on a jog in Queens, New York. The New York Daily News published an article about ?the brainy and beautiful victim,? including a selfie of Vetrano from her Instagram. One commenter said, ?Poor girl yes. But she put herself out there like a Kardashian carbon copy.? Later he added, ?If you?re going to be out there, be prepared for the attention, good and bad.? This is how far the attention accusation can go: It validates the idea that this woman?s actions?wearing makeup, posting selfies?might have contributed to her senseless murder. Would you have seen the same type of comment had the victim been male? Doubtful. Women should be allowed to be themselves and live the way they want to, just as Vetrano did.
Women are the only ones whose motives are questioned: ?The ideal feminist world shouldn?t be one where women suppress their human instincts for attention and desire. We shouldn?t be weighed down with the responsibility of explaining our every move. We shouldn?t have to apologize for wanting attention either. We don?t owe anyone an explanation. It?s not our responsibility to change the way we are seen?it?s society?s responsibility to change the way it sees us.

And once again, another great piece from Emily. This reminded me a lot of her conversation with Naomi Wolff a few months ago, where they discussed reclaiming the gaze, and basically everything Emily discusses here. That it?s completely natural and normal to want attention, for men and women. That it?s natural to be sexual, to be sexy, to have opinions, to be political, to want to be heard, to reach out, to be a part of a dialogue. And yet only women are slammed for those things. If I have one criticism of Emily at this point, it?s that she sometimes veers a little bit into the ?woe is the plight of the attractive woman? thing. Her points are completely valid and she?s having a larger dialogue, of course. But the whole reason she?s been given this platform to discuss these issues is because, oh right, she?s a beautiful, sexy woman and she?s exactly the kind of woman who is given priority in our society too. Glamour isn?t asking overweight Marge the Bouncer to talk about these issues (although I would love to know what Marge thinks).

She certainly looks amazing in a bathing suit, and Emily Ratajkowski just rolled out her very first swimwear campaign for Amore & Sorvete?s 2016-2017 collection.
The Perth, Australia-based brand (which means Love and Ice Cream in Portugese) snatched up the ?Blurred Lines? stunner given her prolific social media presence and impressive resume of bathing suit sightings.
Emily told InStyle, ?I first became aware of the brand when I was shooting for Sports Illustrated. I get a lot of different bathing suits and I?ve shot in a lot of different bathing suits, and there was just something about the fit [of Amore & Sorvete] that was extra special. There?s something really special about the way that this line fits. It really is made for girls--for women. It?s thought out and beautiful. It felt like something that I could go to the beach in and be with my friends and go swimming in, but also still look really cute.?

Emily Ratajkowski has fashioned a second/third career for herself as a feminist who speaks out on issues of nude equality. It?s a weird thing to write, but it?s actually true. Emily is a model, an actress, and she talks about feminism and nudity. Those are her jobs now. Emily did an editorial for the new issue of Harper?s Bazaar ? the August issue, on stands on July 19th ? and an interview with feminist writer/thinking Naomi Wolff. I?m not going to post the photos because Emily is completely naked, but you can see the NSFW pics here at HB. The interview is what I wanted to discuss! Emily is once again talking about the double standards (and double standards within double standards) of female nudity, how we as a society react to women?s bodies, body-shaming and much more. She even talks about that Kim Kardashian stuff from a few months ago. Some highlights:
When she became a model: ?Fourteen, but I looked exactly the same as I do now. They didn’t know what to do?I looked like a woman. I genuinely hit puberty before everyone. So I really was more sexual than my classmates. My teachers, my boyfriends, my parents’ friends didn’t understand how complex it all was. Because of third-wave feminism, I understood that there are all these f–ked-up ideals of beauty put on young women; that there was something to be scared about in the entertainment world. But yet the people I knew in my everyday life, they [didn't realize] their faux pas, their missteps, and since they knew me it was that much harder because the comments felt personal.
The ideal world: ?I loved in your book The Beauty Myth when you talk about this ideal world where women could dress sexually casually and it wouldn’t even be something that anyone would notice. For me, that’s something I’ve lived by. I don’t wear a bra all the time, and I don’t think about it.?
Her defense of Kim Kardashian: ?A selfie is a sort of interesting way to reclaim the gaze, right? You’re looking at yourself and taking a photo while looking at everyone. But also who cares? Kim’s allowed to do what she wants. So I issued a series of tweets; she sent me flowers, thanking me, which was very sweet? Also, Kim is someone who could be criticized for a lot of different things about what she represents, but to me it was an important moment to say, ?Even this person who you could criticize for all these different things doesn’t deserve this response, right???
On society?s contempt when women take ownership of their sexuality & bodies: ?Kim said that to me. You know, when Lena Dunham takes her clothes off, she gets flack, but it’s also considered brave; when Justin Bieber takes his shirt off, he’s a grown-up. But when a woman who is sexual takes off her top, it plays into something. But there is a distinction in the reaction between, for example, Kim taking off her shirt and Lena. It’s not fair to either of them.
On the ideal body: ??The world should not be exclusive of the ideal body. It has to include all ideals, all bodies. The whole idea is that when Kim takes a nude selfie, she’s just seeking attention. That’s not the issue. A woman can be seeking attention and also make a statement. They don’t need to be mutually exclusive.
Sex is normal: ?That’s something we really forget in this world, especially in my industry and being in the public eye as a female. There’s this idea that if a man enjoys a photograph of a nude woman or if he likes your short skirt, he’s taking something away from you. It’s not right. Sex is normal. Desire is normal. Attention is normal, and that’s okay. That’s really what slut shaming is, right? You talk about this in your book Promiscuities. A woman talks about having sex, and it’s like, well, a guy got to have sex with you, so you’re stupid. You’ve given something up.?

I?ll say it: I don?t hate anything she says here. In fact, she articulated several points better than I would have been able to, perhaps because Naomi Wolff was there. Emily really brought her A-game. At one point, Wolff and Ratajkowski also talked about how some celebrity women are shamed for being thirsty, for wanting attention, and Wolff basically says that it?s a way of shaming women for being ambitious, for thinking that they are someone special, that they are actually noteworthy. That was a great point, as was the part about how it?s perceived that men are ?taking away? something from women by finding them desirable, that a sexually desirable woman is giving up something by being sexual or desirable. God help me, I?m becoming an Emily Ratajkowski fan.
