Most things have come naturally for me. Most of the careers I have had such as being a makeup artist, surgical technologist, yoga instructor or photographer, I sort of stumbled into without much effort. That is not to say that I dont work hard perfecting those skills or at times worry over how to capture the perfect moment in words, movement or film, but my initial foray into things seem easy and natural. This isnt the case for Kat Graham. Most people dont know that Kat is a multi-hyphenate. She is a dancer, singer AND actor. However, in her newest profile in Design Scene, Kat talks about how she has to work hard to be decent and overwork herself to be great because nothing comes naturally to her. Kat also throws a bit of shade at some of her unnamed coworkers for basically being divas on set. Below are a few excerpts from the interview in Design Scene:
DS: Take us back to your beginnings in showbiz. You started out very young. Did acting come naturally to you? Was it something you always wanted to do? What was your journey like to
become an actress?
KG: Nothing I do comes naturally to me. I really want to make sure that people know that because I actually have to work very hard to be decent, and have to overwork to be great. I am fortunate that I have great coaches and that I take my work very seriously. Acting was definitely something I?ve always wanted to do. I?ve suffered as much if not more than I?ve celebrated, but it?s been worth it. I don?t think there?s a journey to becoming an actress, maybe a professional one. I?ve always been an actress, and at four years old that was the decision I had made right up until I booked my breakout role. I started off doing plays, then commercials, then Disney, then network shows, while simultaneously being a backup dancer, and also doing extra work, guest star roles, music videos, whatever I could get my hands on. In 2007 I was touring and making beats working with Will.I.Am, focusing on my music. When I got back from tour, I was totally broke quickly after, and went back into the auditioning scene and that?s when I booked Vampire Diaries.
Then while simultaneously filming Vampire Diaries, I was releasing music on Interscope Records, and touring as much as I could, while doing movies during hiatus like Honey. The show wrapped three years ago and I?ve done about 12 projects since.
DS: Is life in showbiz what you expected it to be?
KG: Definitely not. When I started, I had no idea how hard I would have to work. And even when I got to a mile stone, there were five other hurdles in front of me. I?ve had to do so much soul searching. The people that you start the journey with are not always the people that you end it with, and for me, that?s been particularly heartbreaking. The sacrifices I?ve had to make, not going to high school, not going to college, giving up time with my friends, relationships falling apart, just to do my art. It?s definitely not what I expected. As they say no one said it was going to be easy, they said it would be worth it
DS: Do your on-screen experiences ever get under your skin?
KG: I would say my off screen experiences have definitely gotten under my skin. I get frustrated if I ever have to deal with actors who don?t want to do the work, or are always on their phone on set, not committed, rude to crew etc. Recently I haven?t really had to deal with any of those issues. On screen the only thing that gets under my skin is my character.

I really like Kat Graham. She definitely has endeared herself to me over the years. Especially when Kat got emotional when talking about how she fell in love with her Afro hair. Kat Grahams father was the godfather of two of Quincy Joness children and I always thought that Kat lived a relatively upper middle class life. Learning how she and her mother struggled when she was growing up and how she experienced nights going hungry really hurts my soul. Kat also talks about how abusive her father was on her Modern Nirvana Youtube channel where she destroys the last of the photos she had of him. The video is quite cathartic.
I am still wondering about which of Kats co-stars were showing up late for work and being rude to the workers. That would be a bit of gossip to discuss. But alas, Kat is a professional so of course she wont spill the beans. I really enjoyed watching Kat play Bonnie Bennet on Vampire Diaries over the years, but Kats recent holiday movies, The Holiday Calendar and Operation Christmas Drop, on Netflix have been a joy to watch. I feel Kat has a way of being vulnerable on screen that I dont see often in younger actors. Maybe Kats talents dont come naturally to her, but youd never know that because everything she does seem so effortless.

I tend to be a night owl who stays up to about 1-2:00 a.m. While I have found several new shows to watch, during my late nights I like to watch Youtube videos, especially the skin and hair care routines of celebrities from Vogue. Half of the time I want to try everything if I haven?t already. It is also a way I keep up with beauty and makeup trends since I no longer do makeup professionally.
So I was excited when I saw the newest Vogue video featured Kat Graham, whom I have loved since she played Bonnie Bennet on Vampire Diaries. She starts the video off talking about part of her hair care journey then shares her skin care regimen which consists of Anastasia BH brow gel, L?Oreal?s Unbelieva-Brow (which I?d like to try), but I currently use L?Oreal?s Makeup Brow Definer Stylist. She also uses Aveeno Makeup Remover Wipes (love these) and Dior?s Capture Youth Serum (which I?d really like to try but at $95 it?s a bit out of my price range) instead I use Peptide Complex Serum by Eva Naturals. Below is the order she uses the products and why as well as the complete video.
?When I first wake up, the first thing I want to do is my eyebrows,? Graham says with a smile. She starts off by shaping them with Anastasia brow gel, followed by L?Oral?s Unbelieva-Brow (which keeps them in place even through her daily workout). Now, for cleansing time: Aveeno?s makeup removing wipes ensure any excess dirt gets removed, while Dior?s Oil Cleanser goes the extra mile to deep clean. She follows up with Dior?s Capture Youth serum for moisture.

What got me emotional was around the 2:44 5:15 part of this video. She starts talking about her hair and how wearing it in a big afro was like therapy for her. For those who do not know, Graham is biracial with a white Jewish mother. She says her mom did not know how to do her hair so she would drop her off at the hair salon every week after she turned nine. But because of social distancing protocols she had to learn how to do her own hair. She also talks about her favorite products that she?s been discovering for her hair and around 5:00 she tears up when talking about how her hair stylist Rachel Lee sent her Cantu?s Avocado Leave-In Conditioner at the beginning of the shut down.
Graham?s quarantine hair journey was partly inspired by her hairstylist, Rachel Lee. Before quarantine officially began, Lee gave her Cantu?s Avocado Leave-In Conditioner. ?It?s almost like she knew I was going to be on my own. And I?ve never had to be on my own with my hair before,? Graham says with tear-filled eyes. ?This was the product that really helped me figure out that my hair will work with me, if I don?t give up on it.? She then slicks her curls back into a bun with Briogeo Curl Cream, the second holy grail product that has transformed her relationship with her hair. Otherwise, it?s all about oils: Manuka, Argan, and Black Rice are her favorites, along with her own concoction of Mustard Seed oil and Jamaican Black Castor. ?You only need a little bit over spots that have given you trouble,? she notes.
I love Cantu products but right now I personally use Suave Leave-In Conditioner with Shea Butter and Coconut Oil which defines my coils making them soft and a bit bouncy and I combine Black Cumin Seed Oil and Chebe Powder mixed with Jamaican Black Castor Oil or Bronner Bros Super Gro Thickener with Sage and Sulfur (I have dermatitis on my scalp).
I like how she keeps her makeup simple, but love how she learned how to do her makeup from Drag Queens in West Hollywood when she used to do music. She said she would also hire them to do her makeup earlier in her career but learned to tone it down over time. I, too, was trained by the Wonder Woman of Drag, Kelly Kline in Austin, TX, who was instrumental in getting me hired at Mac Cosmetics back in 2004. Queens know how to snatch the face for real. But when you live in a humid place, lighter is definitely better. For my foundation I use the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer with Fenty Beauty?s concealer. But enough about me, below are what Kat says she uses daily on her face.
Now, on to makeup: Graham does hers so that it lasts all day?and takes a layered foundation approach to ensure it does. ?We women have hormones. Our skin changes. Sometimes we have dark spots and light spots.? Dior?s Skin Correct foundation, L?Oral?s lightweight foundation, and Fenty?s Match Stix do the trick to shade match the nuances of her skin tone. After concealing, she contours her nose with a technique she learned from her days performing music in West Hollywood drag clubs. Her liquid blush from Benefit gives her a rosy glow while still allowing her freckles to shine through. Next, it?s her favorite part: Doing her mascara. ?To the point where I ask to do it myself when I?m on set,? she says. A flick of shadow from her favorite Dior palette, a swipe of lipgloss, and a swoop of the baby hairs helps to tie everything together. ?Hopefully you guys have enjoyed my self-care routine and have learned a little bit more about my journey,? Graham says, glowing. ?I love you guys.?

Watching this video has made me stan Kat more and it warms my heart to see her fall in love with her African hair. Trust when I tell you, black hair is an emotional thing and learning how to deal with it can be at times frustrating and enlightening. I?ll definitely try some of her recommendations in the future, when I get my coin together. I am looking at you Dior Capture Youth.
Heres Kats video!

| Kat Graham says she collapsed from food poisoning, not a pot brownie | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Kat Graham is being dragged through the press for photos of her being sick. Kat played Bonnie on Vampire Diaries, whose series finale aired only a few weeks ago. She is also a singer, producer and polyglot. She is not, according to her rep, a drug user. And yet, that is exactly what she is being accused of. Kat was visiting the Two Bunches Palms Resort & Spa in Palm Springs last month. She was spotted eating at a local restaurant when she suddenly got up, went outside, vomited and collapsed. EMTs were called to the scene and eventually took her to the hospital. The reason we are talking about this now is that TMZ was able to secure some photos of a collapsed Kat and printed them with a source claiming that Kat had eaten a pot brownie earlier and was having a bad reaction to it. Kat?s reps got on the horn as soon as they heard and told everyone this is a load of BS, Kat had suffered food poisoning.
Kat Graham’s rep confirmstheVampire Diariesstarwas hospitalized last month, but says it was for food poisoning, not abad reaction to a pot brownie.
TMZhad on Sunday posted photos of the 27-year-old actress appearing unresponsive on grass while being treated by paramedics, saying the pics were taken outside a hotel’s restaurant in Palm Springs, California.
The outlet reportedshe ran out, saying she felt unwell and needed to go to the hospital, then started throwing up, passed out, woke up and was transferred to an ambulance. TMZ quoted sources at the resort as saying the actress had eaten a cannabis brownie earlier in the day.
A rep for Graham toldE! Newsthe story is”100percent not true,” adding that the actress “was eating at a restaurant outside the resort and had a violent reaction to food poisoning.”
“Kat is not a drug user, and has never been a drug user,” the rep added.

I don?t know Kat so I have nothing to go on here. But I was once falsely accused of a term paper ?reeking of pot? when a professor opened it. My roommate and I were both cigarette smokers but neither of us smoked pot and I never had. I ardently argued my innocence but she didn?t buy it and gave me a C for ?the writing being all over the place.? (Ironically the paper was for Psych 101.) So, because I obviously still hold a grudge having never been vindicated, I’m supporting Kat. So much of this story bugs, too. For starters, the pariahs taking and selling the pictures of a person collapsed on the ground. And this dubious ?source? claiming Kat had eaten a cannabis brownie is suspect. The resort has refused to comment on this so this is either a snitch from the staff or some passer-by in which case, how the hell does he/she know what was in the brownie? Baked goods are my number one vice on vacation, maybe she was just getting her confection on? Unless the ?source? shared the brownie with Kat, in which case Kat needs to cull her friend group.
The fact is that the reactions to ingesting cannabis and food poisoning can have the same symptoms, although Kat symptoms coincide more with food poisoning than ingesting too much cannabis. Commonly, food poisoning manifests itself one to two days after ingestion however, it can start within an hour. Like I said, I have no idea what happened but if Kat insists she?s not a drug user, I will too for now. I?m just glad she was treated for whatever it was and feels well enough to start promoting her role as Jada Pinkett in the Tupac film, All Eyez on Me coming out this June.
