Freida Pinto covers the 6th anniversary issue of Vogue India with a pictorial called ?Black Magic?. It never fails to please and amuse me that Vogue India does their coverlines in English and that their online site is extremely accessible to English-readers. As for Freida? I?m not a huge fan of styling her to look like The Indian Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but then again, she?s totally done worse photoshoots, and she pulls off the ?edgy? look better than I was expecting. Some highlights from Vogue India?s cover story:
When she first became famous in 2008/09: She was a shiny debutante overwhelmed by the paparazzi stalking her every move; awed by things like “getting handbags from Tod’s, Bulgari and Dior — all in one day.”
Dancing to ‘Jai ho’ on TV repeatedly: “After one year of doing [it] on every live television show, you go ‘Screw you! I’m not doing it one more time’.?
India and food: “There’s a lavish banquet laid out for me at home every time I come to Mumbai? and it always involves jackfruit, fish curry and rice.”
On Danny Boyle & Slumdog: “He gave me the beginning of what I have now. You’ve got to feel so proud of being part of a film that altered the Goodness Gracious Me concept of India that people had. People don’t like me saying this, but Slumdog did open a lot of doors.”
On her style, and why she doesn?t wear saris on the red carpet: “I am Indian; I don’t need to wear a sari to promote Indianness. A sari is not more Indian than my soul. I have no patience for people who are narrowminded? just be a global citizen and be proud of where you come from.”

I?ll admit it, I wanted to write about this because of that quote about saris. As a half-Indian girl, I?ve worn saris before, and I grew up with my dad telling me that saris were the most elegant article of clothing that a woman could ever wear. I disagreed then as I disagree now, although I do think that many Indian and non-Indian women look beautiful in saris. I don?t think anyone feels like Freida should ONLY wear saris or traditional Indian clothing while she?s out in the world, but I do think some people (me included) were slightly surprised by her insistence on wearing European and American designers almost exclusively. She?s very East-meets-West, and she could totally use her position (as a Fashion Girl) to shine a light on Indian designers who are doing more than saris. But it almost seems like she?s sort of resentful of the idea that she could or should wear Indian designers or embrace something so identifiable to India like the sari. Huh.

Excited for an evening of music for a good cause, Freida Pinto arrived at The Sound of Change Live concert at Twickenham Stadium in the United Kingdom on Saturday (June 1).
Founded by Gucci, the campaign will broadcast the concert to a wide-reaching audience, hitting six continents and over 150 countries.
With performers that include Beyonce Knowles, Ellie Goulding, Florence + The Machine, Rita Ora, and Jennifer Lopez, the Sound of Change concert promises to be a cornucopia of musical greatness.
Per the organization?s website, ?Chime for Change is a new global campaign to raise funds and awareness for girls? and women?s empowerment. Chime for Change serves to convene, unite, and strengthen the voices speaking out for girls and women around the world. We focus on three key areas: Education, Health, and Justice.?

Stepping out for a fun-filled evening, Freida Pinto and Dev Patel stopped by the W Magazine and Dom Perignon's Pre-Golden Globes Party on Friday evening (January 11) in West Hollywood, CA.
The adorable couple and "Slumdog Millionarie" co-stars stuck close as they headed inside the famed Chateau Marmont, with Frieda looking lovely in a blue dress with silky embroidery.
The 28-year-old leading lady is currently filming the bio-drama "Desert Dancer."
The true story of Iranian dancer Afshin Ghaffarian, who risked his life for his dream to become a dancer despite a nationwide dancing ban, is slated to hit theaters later this year.

Taking care of some promotional duties, Freida Pinto showed up at a photocall for her new film ?Desert Dancer? in London, England today (October 9).
Joined by choreographer Akram Khan, the ?Slumdog Millionaire? starlet was all smiles as she posed for photographers outside Sadler?s Well Theatre.
Starring Pinto along with Tom Cullen, Marama Corlett, Reece Ritchie, and Neet Mohan, ?Desert Dancer? is slated for a release date sometime in 2013.
Per the synopsis, ?Set in Iran, where dance is illegal, Desert Dancer tells the story of Afshin Ghaffarian (Reece Ritchie) who risked his life to fight for his dream to become a dancer. This film plays against the backdrop of the 2009 election protests, where the passion and defiance of a young generation lit the flame of revolution still sweeping the Middle East and Africa.?

As a half-Indian girl, I can?t even tell you what these photos of Clive Owen and my Indian-girl-avatar Freida Pinto are doing to me. THEY ARE AWESOME. Freida is even looking at Clive like, ?Damn. Okay, I get it. Act cool, girl. Just brush up against him a little bit.? The Clive Dong?s magic is hypnotizing poor Freida. And if I?m not mistaken, Clive looks like he might be preparing to write Freida a dirty letter. ?From the Desk of Clive Owen: Would you like to bang me, darling Freida?? I know, I know ? Clive is happily married, etc. But just give me this, okay? He might be into Indian girls. Please?
Anyway, these photos are from last night?s Jaeger LeCoultre Event at the Venice Film Festival. I think Clive reps the brand, and Freida was probably paid to be there too. Can you even imagine being PAID to stand next to Clive Owen with his arm draped around you? *dies*
As for Freida?s dress ? it?s Alexander McQueen. I don?t know if it?s old McQueen (like, it was actually designed by McQueen?) or if it?s Sarah Burton for McQueen. My guess is that it?s Burton for McQueen ? I?m guessing that because I really dislike the gown, and it doesn?t look like McQueen?s vision. It would have been more interesting if it was just a straight-forward gown with no cutouts, I think. The cutouts make it ?unique? but they look rather dclass in general.

Here are some photos from a few nights ago of the always-gorgeous Freida Pinto at a special screening of her film Trishna in LA. Trishna is the film by Michael Winterbottom which is a very Indian-centric adaptation of Thomas Hardy?s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. At the screening, Frieda wore a mod little Raoul shift that is a bit too orange, I think, for her coloring. Freida is kind of hit-or-miss with her style, but I have to say? rarely does her face look bad, you know? Sometimes it doesn?t even matter what she?s wearing because she just so pretty.
Anyway, considering they?re still doing ?screenings? for Trishna, I guess it?s still in some theaters, maybe? It got a limited release last year, and I think the DVD is about to be released in America too. Here?s the trailer for Trishna ? um, it actually looks really good? I?m sure it?s banned in India, though ? they don?t like sexy stuff like this in films.
Freida is also still giving interviews to promote the film. She?s got a new one in the UK Metro, and here are some highlights:
Describing Trishna: ?It?s based on Thomas Hardy?s Tess Of The D?Urbervilles and explores the relationship between two people separated by a cultural divide. It also explores modern India, which is similar to Hardy?s 19th-century England? There?s an economic boom in India, similar to what happened with the industrial revolution in England. In our film, the family?s livelihood depends on their truck and, when that?s not there, Trishna has to work even harder than she does already to make up for it. It?s about those who do well from change and those who fall through the cracks.?
Working with director Michael Winterbottom: ?I prefer directors to be hard on me. There was a pressure to perform but it was quite subtle. He?d just say ?be in this mood? and let you get on with delivering the scene. I liked that approach. We didn?t have a solid script. It was good to be able to make little mistakes but the camera kept rolling. It was liberating.?
She almost quit acting before Slumdog Millionaire: ?Yes, it was frustrating. I wanted my first project to be something I?d never regret, so I?m grateful I held out for as long as I did. That film changed everyone?s life who was involved. I was going to give acting a go until I was 25 and, if I hadn?t made it work by that age, I?d do something else. I had moments of ?I?ve had enough? but I?m glad I had people around me who told me to hold on to my dream.?
She misses India: ?My family ? I?ve missed the last two Christmases with them, which is a shame ? and Mumbai. It?s a crazy city. I go back and get my dose of craziness and then leave again. It?s an extremely stimulating place. You either love it or hate it ? and because I was born and brought up there, I love it. Some parts of it make me angry though. When I see people littering ? actually that?s anywhere ? not just Mumbai. Have some civic pride. You need to respect the place you live.?
Global cinema: ?It?s only a matter of time before cinema looks more global. I walk around New York and see every different race of people living together? we?re slowly moving to where ethnicity isn?t always a key factor in casting. If you want to sell your film to the world, you have to make it appealing to different cultures and ethnicities. In the Woody Allen film I had an Indian name but I said: ?Thanks for not making her an Indian caricature.? Woody said: ?Why would I do that? The character just has to like music and be able to entice the next-door neighbour.? I wish more people thought like that.?
Rumors in the Indian media that she?s a diva: ?Not the Indian media, just one publication because I didn?t promote Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes there as I was promoting it in the US. I couldn?t be in two places at once.?
Her actual demands: ?No, the only thing I ask is to be punctual. Everyone values their time but it?s never been an issue.?

She sounds nice. Maybe a little anal retentive about punctuality (but I?m like that too). One part that made me roll my eyes was the bit about Mumbai and littering? er? obviously, littering is an issue, of course. But THAT is the issue you?re going to complain about? Weird.

Getting in a few minutes of relaxation before starting her busy workday, Freida Pinto was spotted immersing herself in a yoga session on the Los Angeles set of her latest film ?Knight of Cups? on Wednesday (June 27).
The beautiful brunette looked calm and focused as she was seen posing in the window of a Los Angeles home in a flowing blue dress before meeting up with co-star Christian Bale to begin shooting.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, the pair, along with their crew, spent the previous day down at the Santa Monica pier shooting a romantic scene on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
The Terrence Malick directed drama is a story focused on a man who is in search of love and truth. Also starring Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett, the motion picture is lined up to hit theaters in 2013.

Making her arrival in France, Freida Pinto was spotted at the Roissy Airport in Paris yesterday afternoon (June 10).
The ?Immortals? actress hid behind a pair of oversized sunglasses and chatted on her mobile phone while she waited for her luggage to be unloaded.
And rather than prancing around with a stack of Louis Vuitton suitcases like many celebs, Freida ended up with just one black bag that she carried herself.
Unfortunately, Pinto?s main man Dev Patel was not traveling with her. He was also absent when Freida attended a Lana Del Rey gig in Los Angeles last week.

Closing out the work week with a red carpet appearance, Freida Pinto took over the spotlight at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on Friday (April 27).
Bringing a dose of color to the BMCC Tribeca PAC, the 27-year-old actress was decked out in a red Gucci pantsuit while toting a Fendi clutch baguette as she readied for the premiere of her movie "Trishna".
As for the Michael Winterbottom directed work, "Trishna" tells "the story of the tragic relationship between the son of a property developer and the daughter of an auto rickshaw owner."
Co-starring Riz Ahmed, Roshan Seth and Kalki Koechlin, Miss Pinto's new drama has a limited U.S. release date set for July 13th.
