Here is Selena Gomez showing up and won the night at the 2016 American Music Awards in Los Angeles.
Pulling her brunette locks back into a poker-straight ponytail to give her look some edge, Selena looked happy to be back on the red carpet and certainly wasn’t a shrinking violet in the commanding gown.
Selena was definitely feeling back to her old self as she posed for selfies with fans, braving the drizzle and plummeting temperatures in Los Angeles before heading into the Microsoft Theater.

Among the standout moments at Sunday?s AMAs was Selena Gomez?s acceptance speech after she won favorite pop/rock artist. The AMAs marked her return to the public eye after checking into a treatment facility last August to focus on her mental health. Selena, who also suffers from Lupus, took the opportunity to tell fans how important it was to focus on themselves. During her speech, her voice cracked, which spoke to the rawness of the words she was delivering. It was so heartfelt, part of me wonders if she intended to be this open before she went up or if she just surrendered to the moment:
Selena opened by saying that in 2014, it was on the AMA stage that she was first, ?authentically 100 percent honest with all of you.? She was referring to her performance of The Heart Wants What it Wants which you can watch here. The speech was so short and yet she said so much in it. Like how she pointedly talked about having no control over how much the the world knows about her life. The line that resonated to me the loudest was when she said, “I had to stop. ‘Cuz I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside.” She said it was such conviction. It made it even more powerful when she backed it up by saying no longer needs someone else’s validation and can’t control if others respect her. She knew all the eyes were going to be on her and that likely there were those who expected to see her stumble. Instead of trying to over-polish her performance, she laid bare her fight so to reach others who are fighting. Every person who does this, every person who reaches out to those struggling reaches at least one more person, I’m sure of it.
I am not alone in my admiration. Many were moved and inspired by Selena’s speech. Lady Gaga posted this to her Instagram:

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has reportedly checked back into rehab in a facility in Tennessee to deal with her anxiety and depression. This is Selena?s second stay in rehab, having gone once before in 2104. At that time, numerous stories speculated of drug addiction. A year later, Selena corrected those rumors by divulging that she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus. Last month, Selena cancelled the remaining dates of her Revival tour to deal with her health. After a few cryptic tweets, concern for Selena grew. Multiple sources have confirmed that Selena is, in fact, back in rehab for her mental health and that she is improving little by little.
Selena Gomez is on the mend.
Multiple sources confirm in the new issue of Us Weekly that the pop star, 24, has been recovering at a Tennessee treatment facility since announcing August 30 that she was taking a break to manage ?anxiety, panic attacks and depression.? The ?Kill Em With Kindness? singer canceled 34 remaining dates on her Revival world tour as a result.
?Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,? a source close to the pop star tells Us. ?She can go to a very dark place.? The insider describes the facility, just outside of Nashville, as a ?private and quiet place,? but ?super intense.?
The Disney Channel alum ? who went to rehab in 2014, one year after being diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease ? also stopped working on new music. ?She was supposed to be recording, but she hasn’t told anyone when she?ll be back in studio,? a music industry source explains.

I don?t know why but I hold a real soft spot for Selena. I fell a little in love with her on Wizards of Waverly Place and it just never left me. Although, she doesn?t get any free passes from me, like when she convolutes shade thrown on Taylor Swift with BLM. However, I really feel for her. I feel bad that she is suffering, that her mental health is compounded by her physical health and that she has to broadcast every step of her process to avoid rumors of drug abuse.
I?m glad to hear this positive update because that phrase ?she can go to a very dark place? is well-known to anyone who has or knows someone with mental health issues. Fans were so relieved to hear of her recent sightings around town, they started a #SelenaIsBackParty on Twitter. She received more good news on Monday in the form of five AMA nominations, including Artist of the Year. And Gossip Cop says she is in no way involved in the Brangelina divorce so she won?t have to face that pitchfork-wielding mob when she checks out. I wish Selena well and hope she is fully back up on her feet soon.

Selena Gomez has been touring since May to support her new album. Just looking at the Wikipedia page for her Revival tour is making me tired. She performed 16 dates in May, 20 in June, 12 in July and she did seven this month (I guess that’s a “break”). So she’s been going nonstop for some time, and her tour was set to continue with a very grueling schedule through the end of the year. As we heard almost a year ago, Selena has lupus, an autoimmune disorder which can be exacerbated by stress and physical exertion. What?s going on with Selena Gomez? On her 24th birthday Saturday, she sent out two tweets, one which revealed she asked her friends to make a donation to lupus for her birthday and the other which was a clip of her singing an updated version of her song Kill Em With Kindness. She sang the lyrics, ?The world can be a nasty place/?You know it, I know it, yeah/?We don?t have to fall from grace?/Put down the weapons you fight with.? The following day, she performed her first show of the international leg of her Rival tour in Jakarta. Although she seemed in good spirits prior and during most of the show, Selena gave an emotional talk to her audience, wiping tears away, before she closed out her set. Following the concert, she posted this to her Instagram:

North Carolina?s controversial Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (HB2) requires people to use the designated bathroom of the sex assigned on their birth certificate. Several artists and companies have boycotted North Carolina in a show of support for the LGBTQ community that this bill alienates. Selena Gomez, who kicked off her Revival tour last month, is scheduled to play at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte tonight. After weighing her options, she decided to move forward with the concert but is still sending a message of support to the LGBTQ community. Not only did she confirm that the arena has gender neutral facilities, Selena will donate a portion of the concert?s proceeds to Equality North Carolina to assist in defeating HB2.
Selena Gomez isn?t canceling her upcoming Tuesday, June 7, show in North Carolina, but she?s taking a stand against the ?bathroom bill? in a different way.
?I am fortunate to have grown up in a home where I learned from an early age that everyone should be treated equally,? the 23-year-old pop star said in a statement to Billboard. ?I went back and forth on whether I should cancel my concert in North Carolina and ultimately I think what is right for me is to move forward with my show and donate a portion of the proceeds to Equality North Carolina and their effort to defeat this act of discrimination.?
Gomez added that she and her team have done everything they can to ensure that they are promoting the anti-HB2 sentiments that so many of her fellow musicians have already espoused.
?I?ve been reassured the venue I will be performing in has gender neutral bathrooms as I want everyone coming to my show to be welcomed,? she continued. ?I feel like my generation is the most progressive one yet and believe there will be a day soon when laws like HB2 won?t even be a consideration.?

Joel McHale also donated proceeds from his scheduled performance to Durham’s LGBTQ Center as opposed to canceling his show. I believe Selena considered her decision carefully and took the action she felt would send a message. I appreciate that her public statement included the fact that she ensured the venue had gender-neutral bathrooms.
I want to acknowledge the commenters from North Carolina who have assured us that the archaic views behind HB2 and the governor that passed it do not represent everyone in the state; I believe you and feel your pain. However, I do want to see this bill struck down and support all forms of opposition to it; be it boycotts like Brice Springsteen’s or statements like Selena and Joel’s. Pressure grows from corporations as companies like PayPal and Hyatt and celebrities make good on their promise to pull out of NC. Financial institutions continue to fight the bill on their end. If the Human Rights Campaign can get the FAA to cut airport grants, this discriminatory bill might finally die on the vine, as it should.
